As the resident Damontre Moore supporter I thought I'd establish a thread in his honor.
So what do we know about him?
Positives
1. Production - Found playing time as a true freshman and recorded 6.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks as a part time 34OLB pass rusher. Sophomore season became a starter in their 34 and had 72 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. Junior season switched to 43DE and had 85 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks. Was unquestionably one of the top players in the SEC.
2. Age - Just a puppy. Pretty amazing but Moore is only 20 years old and won't be 21 until September 11th. For comparison's sake Jarvis Jones is 23.
3. Genetics - Has prototypical size. 6'5 / 250lbs / 34.68 arms / 10.25 hands. For comparison's sake Jarvis Jones is 6'2 / 245lbs / 33 arms / 9.25 hands.
4. High-Motor - From the tape I've seen he's always going and in many highlights he's providing backside help crashing the LOS.
5. Initial Explosion - It's actually fairly good. 35.5 vertical was 7th best of all LB and DL combined. 3 cone at pro-day would have tied-11th at 7.03 for all LB and DL combined. Short Shuttle at pro-day would have tied-10th for all LB and DL combined. I also remember his 10 yard split in the 40 was decent.
6. Has two years of experience playing OLB in the 34.
7. Can pull off a goat-tee whereas I cannot.
Negatives
1. Lack of Elite Athleticism - Biggest peeve when I'm watching him on tape is the lack of elite bend or speed or quickness. Doesn't have plays like Clowney for example where you say whoa! He beats people but doesn't slide under or spin or bull rush. I've watched some Barkevious Mingo and Dion Jordan and he's simply less athletic than those two.
2. Strength / Speed at Combine - Failed. Miserably. A 4.94 40 time just does not cut it. And 12 reps on the bench??? I worried that he'd never seen the inside of a weight room. He did 19 reps at his pro-day. Ok that still is not acceptable to me.

So where does this get me?
For me I'm pretty impressed that the guy accomplished all that he did when he was most likely one of the youngest guys on the field. What would this guy be like 1, 2, 3 years from now playing in the SEC? He'd be a terror. Think about that when you're evaluating Jarvis Jones.
At the end of the day he looks really good on tape. And he doesn't take plays off. If drafted at 6 we'd need to introduce him to the strength and conditioning coach immediately. If he embraced that maybe this guy would stud out in the pros.
He's not amazing though....that'd be my biggest drawback. At 6 I kind of want a freaky guy like Jevon Kearse if I'm taking a pass rusher.
We shall see. But I think Moore is going to be a very good pro. Maybe not a first team All-Pro guy but a really solid contributor you'd feel comfortable building around.
i loved watching him at A&M. his physical attributes make him seem like he will be one of those guys that goes late 1st / early 2nd and becomes really good in a couple seasons.
(sort of like Kruger ---- keep D.Moore away from Baltimore)
I'm in what would amount to a very strong level of agreement. I didn't view Moore as explosive as the rest of his piers and felt that he wasn't worthy of the 6th overall pick. Conversely, if he's fallen out of the 1st round alltogether, I think he becomes a solid bet for a team in the 2nd. He does have a high motor, he does have functional strength against the run (better than any of the guys in tight quarters except for Ansah) and he does have short-space burst.
I would like to know about his mental makeup, though. He should have spent way more time in the weight-room getting ready for the combine. Why he didn't I have no idea, and that's a symptom of a head that isn't quite right. Maturity? Maybe, but all these rumblings about him being a little bit off is worrisome.

When our season was over n I started thinking about draft I saw some reports n Size weight stuff n got excited about Moore. Then I went n watched some of the last couple of games he was playing.
I came away pretty disappointed in what I saw...nothing remotely what I would expect from a Top 10 talent. If this wasn't a weak first round draft I think he would not make it in the top 30. I just don't see Dominant in him.
JMHO - oh n that was before the combine...he didn't impress there either.

Gonna pose a question to keep Hel's thread going...
As the college year was closing and I started watching Moore's games on replay, I formed the opinion that he really wasn't an OLB, but more of a DE. I feel the same way about Ansah, but that's for another thread.
So how many folks feel that Moore is an OLB, and how many think he's a DE?
Here's what none of us know about our defense...how much of it will be a true 3-4? If we're going to function out of a predominantly old-school 3-4 set as the base, Moore wouldn't make much sense for us. However, if we're going to truly run a hybrid system, then Moore becomes very attractive in the late 1st or 2nd round.
I've made the case that teams want to pay their 3-4 OLB's to rush the QB. To that end Moore compares favorably to Suggs, in that both are players with good size but questionable straight-line speed. Suggs' kids won't work a day in their lives thanks to all the sacks Suggs has made in his career in spite of that less-than-ideal speed. If we bounce back-and-forth between a 4-3 and 3-4 schemes, Moore can do some good things for a team.
The thing I'm most curious about is where his head is at. He clearly has a reputation of being a strange guy, and the fact he wasn't at all ready for the combine is a HUGE red-flag. He'd need to answer that question for me more than any other if I was interviewing him.

Well, he was an OLB in 2011 and 2010. Certainly, his production was much better in 2012 as a DE. When I was first interested in him as a first rounder this year, it was when I was assuming we were staying in a 4-3 and needed a RE. Unlike most of the guys, however, he actually has experience at 3-4 OLB. He's far less a projection in that role than most of the other prospects... Carradine, Okafor, Jordan, Ansah, Werner, etc.
Toad...how ya been. Already been taking hits for you about Campbell lol
Love Ansah...but that's for another thread - It is a tough transition.
But as for our defensive look I think we are going to be in the 3-4 a lot more than thought of...just the LBs are going to move around like we have never seen before. Rarely will we be in a straight 4 DL look possibly in some Prevent stuff?
But I envision us just overloading certain areas of weakness that we see in the OL chain...try to breech that area...also don't forget the Zone Blitz stuff n we could see a DL dropping back as we blitz Ward. Yeah we might see a lot of 2-5 more than 4-3. I just see us doing whatever we can to disrupt n penetrate.
Moore I got to recheck...just I remember looking at him closely in those end of year games (more than one) n came away with Huh??? what's all the fuss.

I like Moore as a player. He produces and has a nonstop motor. Put him in an NFL locker room and give him some steroids so that he bulks up and gets some roid rage like the Steelers did with James Harrison and I think you will have one heck of a player. And he is only 20 yo so he still has some physical development over the next few years
But like you, I worry about his head. If the background checks are okay then I would have no problem. Regaless of whether or not we take him I certainly hope that the steelers do not.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

Good, Eo. I welcomed you back in a thread to Versie, but you were too busy beoch-slapping some of the folks who came over from that other board to see it.
The ribbing for Campbell is all in fun. I gotta take the lumps for all the years I've been trying to persuade folks to sign him in case our starters fail, and yet here we are again. Sadly, for all the bashing he's received, Campbell has been better in his career than every single QB who has come through here since '99. Ugh.
But enough about Campbell. There's a thread for that.
Back to Moore...You've been gone a while so I'll get ya up to speed. Dj and I used to trade PM's, but we've had a fun rivalry over the last year. The latest chapter was that he was anti-Jones and pro-Moore, at least until scouts had to time his 40-yard dash with a Sundial. So in the history you can find me taking shots at him. Having said that, my evaluations were based on taking a guy at #6. Moore has clearly dropped down the draft, but to me it's increased his value. I think Moore is going to be a productive NFL player, though I never thought he'd be a star. While I believe he's better suited to play DE in a 4-3, if we're running a hybrid...I mean a TRUE hybrid where we run all kinds of fronts...I think he'd be worth a 2nd round move, though with one caveat: I'd have to know where his head is at.

FWIW, Jared Allen did 13 reps at the combine.
