According to Dan Hanzus, NFL.com this morning, it seems the Dolphins have the "edge"...

Brent Grimes reportedly could soon land with Dolphins14By Dan Hanzus
Around the League Writer
Looking for the best potential bargain left on the free-agent pile?

We still say it's running back Ahmad Bradshaw. But we can just as easily get talked into Brent Grimes, the cornerback currently recovering from surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon.

NFL free agency is underway. Follow all of the latest player rumors and signings in our free-agent tracker. More... Grimes was ready to cash in big as a free agent before disaster struck in the Atlanta Falcons' season opener last September. Several teams have expressed interest, but Grimes has remained unattached.

That could be about to change. According to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora, the Miami Dolphins are "very much in" on Grimes, "who could land there soon."

Grimes has been linked to the Dolphins since he visited Miami in the first week of free agency. He reportedly has a multiyear deal on the table from the Cleveland Browns and had been positioned as a Darrelle Revis-related Plan B for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though he's reportedly no longer in the mix there.

Grimes, 30, would be a solid replacement in Miami for Sean Smith, who left for the Kansas City Chiefs via free agency. The question is how much general manager Jeff Ireland is willing to commit to a player who's far from 100 percent.

Thanks, Mill'. For whatever reason, I'm not able to link articles (or I'm doing something wrong, which is entirely possible!)...

Jeff Ireland is "all-in", he knows he has to deliver a winner in 2013 or he's out of a job, so he won't care about "possible" future cap rammifications.

Grimes' agent or Grimes himself is playing this nicely...a little info there, a little here...hoping for a bidding war to emerge between two (or 3 with the Bucs) teams who have more than enough cap left to spend...

I like Grimes, but with his injury "history" (dude has played 13 games the past 2 season, he missed 4 games in 2011 too and all but 1 last season) and age (30), I would be cautious and structure the contract according to this, with many health incentives/opening roster bonus etc and as little signing bonus as possible

We should have been more aggressive on guys like Lewis or Houston: durable, proven and in their prime starting CBs....now we're left with a bidding war over a 30yo former great CB on crutches

I like what we have done so far in FA, but the decisions and "plan" at CB (and FS for that matter) are at least "questionable"

Yeah, this is not good news. The last thing we want to do is get in a huge bidding war. I completely understand that we have to pay guys more to come to Cleveland, but we can't get ridiculous about it. That part about Miami's GM having to win and not worrying about the cap is especially troubling.

Miami is also trying to get funding for stadium renovations. A referendum for that will be voted on by the people in Miami.

So while Miami is paying a ton for players, they're also trying to pay for votes. Signing some high profile and recognizable names may help their cause with voters.

The Mike Wallace contract is a good example.

There are some fights you should pick and want to have. IF Grimes is vital to us for this season, fight it out.
To say we are not pursuing because of an imagined tag is wrong. An economical loser isn't what I want. But I don't want to "invest" in stupid money either. Stay in the mix; IF it gets too rich, bail then. But let's not talk ourselves out of players without making a move at least.

Grimes is a good catch, but is he really worth spending extra money to get? After all it will take at least a year for Grimes to return to pre-injury form.

This years draft has a plethora of quality DB's. Browns have a couple of promising speedsters playing their second year. Dick Jauron is very good coaching up DB's. They are also seeking a #2 corner not a #1. In theory, Browns helped the secondary beefing up the DL and LB's. If I was Lombardi, ideally I like to see Cleveland get Cortland Finnegan type corner to fill the #2. Tyrann Mathieu maybe?

As long as its not that Adam guy from ESPN...his tweet is usually the final nail in the coffin.

One thing I'd like to say...Browns vs. NFL competitive FA don't want to go. Maybe...Money talks, Yes! Well in that regard we are at a Major disadvantage.

Look - Florida n Texas has NO STATE INCOME TAX - What is it in Ohio...I know there is a strong Democrat base I think so that its up there. I'm not being political...just the way it is. More liberal state more taxes. More conservative the state less taxes.

So if we put out the best contract on paper. But very similar signing bonus or guarantee stuff. Lets say 20 mil guarantee...Ohio means 2-3 million LESS then those two states. Add in no Property Tax...when you know the houses these guys will buy will be Mega upscale House...Just saying for those who will get UPSET or Mad at this FO n say stuff like We offered more n they turned us down our FO messed up. Nah...write a letter to the Governor

State tax is a big factor. No city/local tax in Florida either. No property tax? that's definitely not Florida. Property taxes are high and insuring a mansion.,.oh boy!

Banner Can't change the weather, Ohio won't get enough tourism money to eliminate a state tax. He'll Have to fight real hard for whatever talent is willing to visit Berea. Getting some talent here and more wins is the best thing he can do going forward.

And we've got these things working against us when our guys become unrestricted. Haden is a Florida Boy...

Fighting with Mortgage Co. now to release the funds. Unbelievable they think they own that money cause their name is on it as well as myself n wife. Got their inspector to come n give them an all clear 100% of the work is done...still they are sending me the check back to endorse it n give me partial payment as they see fit...got to fill out these papers n that papers - What if my guys did it for less than what was on the Ins. claim n check...they keep it? LOL Unbelievable...I hung up on them today as I told them the work done is costing $40 grand more than the check...since they are self acclaimed partners (although they have not contributed one dime to the 25+ years I've paid for flood Insurance) will they take off 20grand of my Mortgage...that is when they started to get nasty n I hung up! Sorry for the rant...timing is every thing...lol just got off the phone about an hour ago...rage subsiding, anger going,

this just confirmed what i figured would;d happen anyways. Factor in the weather and no state income tax and it pretty much is a no brainer as to where he will end up. We are lucky Miami didnt want kruger or bryant because they would be there to

I'm not a big Grimes fan. I don't like his torn achillies coupled with the fact that he's going to be 30 this season. With that said, this team should still sign him IMO.

Regardless of whether this is a deep class for CBs or not, rookie CBs drafted outside the top 10 pretty much always suck in their first years. CB is probably the hardest position for a young player to start at besides QB.

Signing Grimes would prevent the need to draft a CB so high (in other words, the Browns won't be handcuffed to drafting Milliner), and instead allow them to draft a developmental guy to replace Grimes in a year or two. And the Browns have a ton of cap space left (I'm pretty sure they're required to spend a lot more than they're already spent, per the new CBA agreement) so paying Grimes won't be a problem.

And Mathieu's only going to be a good nickel IMO. He's too slow and small to play outside. However since this team probably needs a nickel, I wouldn't be opposed to drafting him the third round.

Trust me, I have a home there. There is a property tax.....but no income......nothing says he has to buy down there. Plenty of nice rental places down there.

Thanks for the article, but I saw absolutely nothing in the article that indicated he wanted to go to Miami all along. Nothing. There was not one comment from either Grimes or his agent. There wasn't one comment from anyone who works for the Dolphins or Browns. Heck, I don't think that even the reporter mentioned that. I think he said something like:--there is a report that says Grimes could land somewhere else.

I still think there are some decent corners left:

I have always liked Winfield. He is older, so I don't think he fits our mold, but he is a good player.

Hall isn't that bad. He's aggressive. He is a risk taker, but I am very surprised he hasn't drawn more interest.

Jammer might be okay in zone coverage. I don't think he has the speed and the hips to play guys man-on-man all over the field.

I still think we should consider bringing Brown back. I don't think he is nearly as bad as most make him out to be [at least on the other board---they thought he stunk.]

All I know is that we better do something. I would love to think that we would draft Miliner. He is number one on my wish list for this upcoming draft. He is a sure thing. He'll play corner for years and then become a star FS in the league, much like both Woodsons and Lott. The risk is that he will be gone before we pick.

Then I was one of the exceptions, for I always liked Brown. Yes, he was getting older and perhaps had lost a step (on occasion!), but he was smart and his coverage was usually tight. He would provide good insurance...

I personally am not a fan of fall down Brown. I had really hoped with all of the CB's out there we could land a decent one. It's pretty much written in stone if Grimes signs with Miami that we are going CB in the first round and hopefully no one else moves up or picks one in front of us

yeah i think millner will go to Dteroit for sure. if that happens we are in a very bad spot. We have to hope then we can trade back a few spots and pick up the next best corner.
