http://www.wkyc.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=290213CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Dawson played for the Browns since 1999 and holds their franchise record for most field goals made, passing Hall of Famer Lou Groza in 2010. He converted 29 of 31 field goal attempts this season and made the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. Dawson earlier tweeted: "Hey, Cleveland. Thank you for a tremendous ride. Your love, support & encouragement have blessed me deeply. Playing for you has been one of the great joys of my life, and I wish you all the best." Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. WKYC-TV

Good for him. Reunited with Seely and is playing for the SuperBowl runner up.
I would love to see him have the chance to make a kick in a game that meant something - i.e. playoff victory or superbowl victory.
he is a class act. best of luck to him.

Yeah, can't believe it was removed.

I Echo that. I saw Lou the Toe Groza play, and Phil was better, and thats not taking anything away from Lou, rather saying how good Phil really was.
Good luck Phil and i hope you win a Super Bowl! You deserve it!

That's probably why, then. Late, like you said. We can't post threads like that here without links or they are considered rumors.

My original instinct was to Blame our FO for letting this happen. However, from what I understand, Phil wanted to go and our FO obliged. Phil did a great job here. Kinda sad seeing the last guy from the '99 roster depart. Lets hope this year is a great one for us.

Good luck Phil! One of my favorite moments at an away game was after we won in NO. I was quite buzzed and likely very annoying but still he let me get a pic with him.

Sorry to hear it, though I think we all knew it was going to happen.
I am sure the Niners who are a playoff team with high hopes wanted a solid kicker and were willing to pay, and Phil has put his time in here, but he wants a shot at a championship. All players do.
He knows even if the new plan here works, it will be 3 years, and in 3 years he will be done.
If by some chance Phil makes the HOF, I am very confident he will elect to go in as a Cleveland Brown. If he doesn't, that will be the only decision he made that will disappoint me.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

It is sad and it is also a concern. Now, we need a kicker. Not always the easiest position to find.

Just had to get rid of the last guy from the '99 team!

I would say that kicker is one of the easiest positions to fill. There are league average kickers on the street every season. You can't say that about many other positions (Punter, long snapper).

I like the Super Bowl part, but man I can't think of a worse first post. He was a blessing.
After the shock of the inevitable happening, and thinking of all the good moments, the Dawson bar, the onsides to himself, northcut onsides, all those fiftys after they figured he could hit them and many others like the fake field goal he ran for the first, but could have gotten the td if "my belly wouldnt have carried me out of bounds". After those thoughts I realized I have never owned another jersey by ANYONE! Football basketball baseball. No other jersey. I really don't know what to do know. Besides wait for new jerseys next year.
Miss him already

Like I said on the other thread ..... I usually don't worry about it when a player leaves our team, but I will miss Phil. He is a class act, and always did his job. He was a Cleveland Brown through and through, and I wish him and his family nothing but the best.

Sorry to see Phil Go ... he was a fixture here for 14 seasons and I will miss him, I hope he does well in San francisco ... unless we play them in the Super Bowl ...

I have season tickets and go to about 3 games a year. Phil always amazed me because he was constantly preparing for his next kick on the sideline. The guy rarely stood around doing nothing. He was always kicking into the net or practicing his footwork. Very impressive.
I think it is a testimony to his greatness that so many people are lamenting the loss of a kicker. That has to be very, very rare.

I almost do feel like this is a good thing in a way though ...... because now maybe our best players will be something other than a kicker and a kick returner. (besides the LT)
I have heard some people joking, (and not just on the board) that maybe we'll turn the corner now that Dawson and Cribbs are gone,
In a way they could be right. No offense to either guy, but each guy has become a crutch to a large degree. So the offense stalled ...... Phil will kick a 58 yarder .........
So we keep stalling on offense and the defense finally held .... maybe Cribbs will break one ......
Each guy really has been a crutch .... so maybe the team will finally step up and progress now that the crutches are gone.

Will miss you Phil. Thanks for the outstanding, most consistant job. Good luck. Get that ring! Phil and my son Josh at training camp '06. He was always Josh's favorite player. He followed him all around the field that day with his camera. Phil obviously noticed that 'cause when we motioned him over showing him the camera he didn't hesitate. Dude is such a class act... And with GMDawg with whom Phil was amused ...

Thanks for those crazy kicks in '07 vs. Balt. and Buffalo, and thanks for everything else too!

why would it get ugly.?
Phil wanted to go and he went, go get that ring Phil.
I assume it was that reason, if so great for him.
If it was a money issue shame on us.
It certainly was not to get clsoer to home, SF is 400 miles further away .
Anyway he is gone and we need to find a kicker.. some say easy to find, yeah easy to find but not so easy to replace Phil - he was money

No it won't. At least not until we lose a game in First Energy because of a missed FG.
Good luck, Phil. If we end up in the SB against you guys, laces in.
