A Lions cut after 2 games last year? Hard to see where he could fit on the roster, but if our coaching staff wanted him, then they must be seeing something...

Quote: One year contract to a player with three career starts since 2009. He'll likely be on the bubble to make cuts come early August.
Very true. I wouldn't be surprised if he's on the league minimum. Not big loss if he doesn't make it.
People just expect every FA we sign to be winners, and experience levels out the wazoo. Not happening. The clear indications of a one-year contract. Perhaps we'll find a jewel, or perhaps these people will just an in-and-out ordeal.
Either or, I dig adding as much competition at every possible position.
Would still be interested in knowing why he was cut from Detroit after two games on a team that needed CB help. Man, I hope Grimes is still in the mix. I know reports say so but it would make me feel a ton better about this CB group.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.
Wade, Skrine, Barnes, Owens, Bademosi (am I forgetting anyone?) that will be battling for the opposite of Haden and another battle for the nickel spot.

Correct. We have Haden, and a lot of nickle CB's.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

yea and you just know these 1 year deals are going to play hard for a contract.
being a browns fan is like taking your dog to vet every week to be put down...
with hits like that is he a possible FS canidate? Often CB's who are not starters can become starters at the FS position.
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.
Tampa doesn’t look like the destination for Brent Grimes
According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, it doesn’t look like Grimes is going to be a Buccaneer. Stroud attributes that report to “someone with knowledge of the situation” and suggests that the Dolphins or the Browns are more likely landing spots for Grimes

You got that out of a thread titled.... Browns Sign CB Kevin Barnes ?
Well, Jacob Lacey ...... Kevin Barnes ....... anyone could make that mistake.

LOL on the last three posts. Kinda like that kid commercial where the kid picks the name Nicky Quick because the two names rhyme. LOL
I was hoping for Grimes. Disappointed in this. Depth, I guess.
Heck, I would rather bring Sheldon Brown back than start anyone else that we have. Seriously.
I even hate expressing stuff like that on here, because this board is so agenda based. You got guys like Dj, Pit, mac, Super, mac, etc who just hate on EVERY FREAKING move. We can't even have logical and rational discussions. It's all about sides. Very depressing.
This kid seems like he was a good slot corner for the Redskins back in 2011. If he can be that for us this year than that will be a help. Obviously the front office feels that we need depth in the secondary, and they are adding pieces. These guys aren't starters, but pieces who might be able to fill a specific role.
Hopefully anyway.

I see you're back to what you probably call "talking football", in pretty much every one of your posts today
...and you've actually managed to add "lying" into your repertoire, nicely done
Back to Barnes: anything over the minimum and anything guaranteed for this guy would be a waste of money
Kevin has excellent athletic talent to play his position. He has fluid hips, quick feet and plays very good in a zone defense. He also has the athletic potential to play in single coverage. Kevin is a smart CB and understands how to bait a QB into making big mistakes when he is in zone coverage. He has good hands to make the interception. Kevin could be a hell of a CB If he can correct one big problem.
NEEDS TO IMPROVE
That big problem is that Kevin is too skinny to take the pounding in the NFL as a starting CB. I don't believe he has the body type that will allow him to put more muscle on his frame or bulk up without it affecting his quickness. Also, he has problems tackling big WR's and his open field tackling leaves a lot to be desired. Other than those issues, he does have potential.
TALENT BOARD ROUND 4
If Kevin can add bulk without it affecting his quickness and can learn to tackle better, particularly in the open field, only then can he become a good zone coverage CB. That's quite a long list isn't it?! Then let's go in this direction. If Kevin can bulk up so that he can use some bump and run techniques and then get stronger so that the big WR's don't push him around when running their routes, AND at the same time, not lose quickness when he bulks up so that he can defend against the smaller quicker WR's, he MAY make it as a CB for the team that drafts him...I think! You get my drift? As a specialty nickel-dime CB, he better learn to tackle better. He could still be useful because he can intercept the ball and he is smart.

I always felt that even if you improve the 50th position on the roster you have imprved your team

Why are you disappointed Vers ? Isn't playing DB one of the more difficult positions to learn ? and now we get a younger body with 4 years exp... maybe there will be a good upside to this. Not sure, got to see what the Coaching staff likes in him.
Grimes scares me a bit with the injury, but who knows ...

Heh. I only knew it was a Lions guy. I had to go back to a website for a free agent CB list to see who it was I'd read about. That's when I remembered it was Lacey. Barnes wasn't even on the list . . .

Well as long as you are including Wade, you might as well include Hagg, I think they have the same skillset.
To another poster: 6'1 corner? Well you can't coach height. You can't coach speed and you can't coach height; size too.
If any player keeps going bye bye after a couple weeks somewhere, my brainstorm (wild guess based on nothing), maybe he doesn't know where to stand and gets confused on his assignments.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Horton wants little DB's who can hit. Here are his numbers 2011 Washington:
"The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Barnes had his best season in 2011, when he served as the Redskins’ nickel corner. He appeared in 15 games and tallied career highs in tackles (26) and interceptions (two). According to the Browns, he also had six quarterback hurries, which was the third-highest figure among all NFL cornerbacks."
Washington traded him to Detroit who waived after two games. Per reports, Detroit played him in the slot. He stated he is better on the outside. I can't find anything conclusive as to why he was waived. It is obvious he didn't fit. They waived Barnes to claim Saints defensive back Jerome Murphy off waivers. Murphy was 6'0 200 lbs it was not a size issue. I did read there were conditions in the trade with Washington, so I guess Detroit cut their losses. Nobody picked up Barnes after his waiver.
Looking at his 2011 numbers kid had potential. I wonder if his head got a little big and didn't come to camp in top shape.
He doesn't have to be our #2 corner for this signing to make sense. He just has to beat out the last guy on the depth chart. You need to build from the bottom as well.

Nope, it only makes sense if everyone you sign is a starter of all pro caliber...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I agree. You are bringing in competition.
I have no problem with that. Rosters aren't just built from the top down. If you see a potential value, be it the best guy on the team or the last guy on the team, you make the move.
So maybe this guy betas out skrine for a position.....we've upgraded. No?
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
Signing Owens and Barnes just means that they don't trust Skrine and Wade enough and I agree. Owens got 1mil, which sounds about right for a vet player that should make the team as the 3rd to 5th CB. I assume Barnes got even less and only got a "chance to compete" handshake, everything above that would be a waste.
We still have a big hole at outside CB, which will either be filled by Grimes or a draft pick.
The part that I don't like about the bunch of nickel-CB guys we now have is that none of them can play on the outside in case Haden or whoever is the no2 CB will miss games. That's why I wanted a guy like Munnerlyn, who btw signed for 1.1mil , who's at least decent on the outside and certainly better than Owens or Skrine. Our best outside CB backup might be Wade at this point
