Colt is gone. No one is going to pay a 3rd string QB 2.4 mil especially when he has a weak arm and now playing in a version of the Coryell offense.

Now as for Campbell and Weeden. I think both can be successful in this offense. Both have better accuracy than Cam and DA (before I hear the whining about Weeden's accuracy picture DA and Cam in a small ball offense) . Both failed to be a west coast QB but neither ever had the skillset for that offense. This is the system that both were born to play.

Now you also have a year's experience for this young offense, a healthy Richardson and Hardesty, one of the best offensive lines in football and Gordon in a vertical offense.

Sorry for you because you obviously like Colt and that's fine. However, the writing is on the wall.

He's gone.

How exactly is the writing on the wall? Because Mary Kay regurgitates the same pigeon mindeded chicken feed over and over regarding Colt's arm? She never mentions how Colt is more accurate on his deep throws than Weeden is or how he manages the game or protects the football better or any of those things, she's overly impressed by big guns and even though that should not come as any surprise, she's clearly just trying to pay for her next manicure... There's no story here. The Browns bring in needed depth at a position that has Thaddius Lewis as the backup's backup and suddenly Colts not in the plans? That is counter intuitive to everything else that been done this offseason... strengthening the positions on the field. Just because we brought in Des Bryant doesn't mean that we're cutting Rubin or trading taylor, it just doesn't make sense. If Colt is as good as many think he is then paying him 2 mil as a starter is a heck of a value at the QB position. He met the escalators in his contract and now everyone is crying foul, give me a break and cut the guy some slack, he may very well beat out both of these geezers for the Start IMO.

Not calling you out, Mourg......but, I just don't get how anyone says that Weeden has good accuracy. He is wildly inaccurate on many throws. He throws the skinny post well. He throws the 12-16 yard out well. But, this guy misses a ton of throws. A ton.

And I don't care how strong your arm is, if you are late w/your throws and can't anticipate windows, you will never succeed in the NFL

I actually wish we would trade Weeden. I doubt if anyone would give us much for him, but it would be nice if someone did. If only Heckert or Holmgren had gotten a job somewhere.

The only thing I like about this move is that Campbell is just barely good enough to push for the starting job so that if it is true that Weeden is lazy and doesn't study he can get passed.

If this lights a fire under Weeden then it was a good move.

If Jason Campbell is starting games for us then it bad. Very bad and welcome to the top of the draft 2014.

OO i would never say that WEeden has good accuracy. I said that he had better accuracy than both Cam and DA and that I believe strongly in. All are throw to the spot passers. Weeden can at least occasionally hit a guy in stride on a crossing pattern. Also our receivers to be fair, did not run the best routes lol.

I don't know that they will be successful but lets face it this is the only system that Campbell and Weeden has a chance to be successful in. The setup for success is there. If they fail, they just never had what it took.

Well for know, you are right. Mary Kay is changing her tune already about the timeline of a deal, however the AP is reporting the trade/cut info.

But personally, it's just a matter of time. He won't be on the roster IMO.

What if this signing was meant to light a fire for Colt and not Weeden? As clearly Colt probably knows that with a competent FO and coaching staff, he's going to get the nod. That's how I see it anyways.

I would trade completely out of the first round this year if it meant having an extra first next year with Clowney and the QBs.

Colt and Jason are both mobile, and both have decent turnover ratios. Lewis is out.

We start the season with three QBs who have multiple game experience.

I would not be shocked to see us trade down to aquire more 2014 picks---for a QB possibility, if Weeden does not improve---alot.

But what do I know?

Lewis played respectably against the Steelers, with almost no prep time. He showed that he can be the 3rd QB, able to play well with almost no practice time. He is also far cheaper than McCoy.

If we don't draft a QB this year, it would not surprise me in the slightest to see us keep Lewis over McCoy. Despite recent talk that McCoy could be a competitor for the starting job, every time anyone with the Browns speaks about the starting job, and the competition for the job, the name Colt McCoy is strangely missing from almost every conversation.

He's toast. He'll probably get a backup job somewhere ..... I mean, even Brady Quinn and Charlie Frye found jobs for a while, until every team realized just how bad they really were. DA has managed to find a job longer than both of them, but he has that amazing arm, and also seems to have taken on the role of veteran mentor. I don't see McCoy taking on that kind of role.

Well so much for bringing in someone that will "compete" with Weeden and push him. IMO Campbell isn't much of an upgrade, if any "upgrade" at all.

Nothing to get me thrilled about this signing.

Not just to you, but I would pose this question to anyone: What QB out there in free agency would have made people happy?

Obviously the Alex Smith name is going to pop out. Out of some slim pickings, he'd be at the top of the list. I'd rather have inked up Hasselbeck than Campbell, and I don't even like Matt either lol...

Alex Smith wasn't a free agent. The cost to acquire smith was the 34th pick in the draft and a future mid-rounder.

I wanted Smith as well, but I wouldn't have paid that price.

So what free agent QB's would have made people happy.

wouldn't have made people happy but... should have brought da back. good enough to push weeden. not good enough to take his job unless he realy is that bad. worked for chud for 4 years. I guess banner thought he was too much a lightning rod. lol

We will draft Tyler Bray as our developmental guy. Haslam/Vols/Bray plus Lombardi keeps chasing Mallet and they are pretty damn similar QBs. I would go jones but i think we go Bray.

I suspect that we'll look at a strong armed guy in the 5th round or so. I really don't see us spending too much more than that on a guy who will have to sit and learn for several years.

There's more to QB than having a strong arm. How about a QB with awareness, presence, leadership, accuracy, an O-line providing protection, WRs that catch the ball when thrown to and play-calling by a coach that knows which side the x's and o's go on...

Just sayin we are set for a shootout and John Wayne didn't carry a bazooka yo.

Given the choices available, this was probably the least of all evils. Both he and Weeden, along with Thad to a lesser extent, fit the system well.

For a few dollars more, you just traded out McCoy for Campbell who does actually fill the skill set needed to run a vertical O.

No real complaints here.....

I'm failing to comprehend the rationale for keeping McCoy, and what signs you've seen which would indicate the FO has any intention of giving him a chance to stay on the roster, let alone compete for the starting job.

How many teams are paying the #3 emergency QB $2.3 million bucks?

What team brings in a starting veteran to compete with not one but two QB's for the starting job?

I see you dig McCoy, but you gotta make a better case than just "HE DUN TOOK AR JOB!"

1- Jason Campbell was not a starting QB last year, he was a BACKUP as well.
2- What makes you think Colt will be the #3 QB on the roster, he might win the competition outright, lord knows he did last year.
3- The FO has given NO indication that he will NOT have a legit chance to win it.

Late in the draft, you are going to find deeply flawed candidates for QB.

You can train and teach a QB a number of things ..... from awareness in the pocket, to improving his mechanics and footwork.

The one thing you cannot "fix" is arm strength. If a guy has an elite arm, then he has something to work with. The odds of a 5th round QB making it are pretty slim anyway, so you might as well start with a guy with at least a couple of elite qualities, and size and strength are qualities that are not teachable.

The FO stated they wanted a QB competition. They sign a veteran to what was reported as pretty good money.

Colt, as nice of a guy as he is, does not have the velocity in his passes to play in a vertical O which this FO has stated they plan to run here.

If colt was who they intended as competition for weeden, there would have been zero need to sign Campbell in the first place.

But good luck with that....

Meant to imply a starting veteran in terms of experience.

The FO states they wanted to have someone to "push" Weeden. That means either make him better or take his job.

The FO goes out and signs Jason Campbell. If they believed McCoy was the guy to "push" Weeden there wouldn't have been need to sign Campbell.

See above.

You have to be in a competition to win it.

Browns put heat on Weeden with Campbell

"This is a good fit for the Browns because offensive coordinator Norv Turner wants to stretch the field and Campbell has a big arm, the best in a weak free-agent class. Campbell, who was considered one of the top three quarterbacks available when free agency began, is a legitimate threat to Weeden because of his experience and ability to read defenses. Unlike last season, when no one really bought into Colt McCoy overtaking Weeden, the battle between Weeden and Campbell isn't for show. The new regime of chief executive officer Joe Banner and coach Rob Chudzinski didn't draft Weeden, so it should be a more level playing field. Even if Campbell doesn't win the job, he'll push Weeden to play better. The signing of Campbell likely ends McCoy's Browns career."

I doubt that anyone looking at things rationally knows that McCoy's time in Cleveland is almost over. Chud can talk about tailoring the offense to a guy like McCoy, but is you have 2 strong armed QBs, what are the chances that the 3rd guy is going to be one who requires a completely different offense in order to compete?

From Pluto:

Cleveland Browns don't say it, but starting QB job is Brandon Weeden's to lose: Terry Pluto | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2013/03/cleveland_browns_starting_qb_j.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The signing of Jason Campbell doesn't signal the end of Brandon Weeden with the Browns.

But it could lead to the departure of backup quarterback Colt McCoy.

Campbell signed a two-year deal with the Browns. The 31-year-old veteran has started 71 games in the NFL. But at this point in his career, he's probably best as an experienced backup who can start when needed.

But the Browns will probably say that Campbell is here to compete with Weeden for the starting job.

Weeden knows he's a superior quarterback to McCoy. While some fans may disagree, the previous coaching staff believed that was the case. So does the new coaching staff and front office.

The new front office has serious concerns about McCoy's durability. He's ended each of his three pro seasons injured. Remember that Thad Lewis started the final game in Pittsburgh because McCoy had a shoulder injury.

Some fans will claim McCoy didn't receive a fair chance to beat out Weeden, who was handed the job by former coach Pat Shurmur.

But the current staff of head coach Rob Chudzinski and offensive coordinator Norv Turner wants a quarterback who can throw the ball deep. Weeden has that physical talent. Long passes are not the strength of McCoy.

McCoy's contract is for $2.35 million this season. Don't be surprised if the Browns decide try to trade him. If they can't find a deal, they may cut him as McCoy's contract is not guaranteed.

One NFL general manager described Campbell to me this way: "He is a good leader, hard worker, with an excellent clubhouse presence. He is viewed as a veteran influence to help show others how to work, prepare and be a pro. He still has some game left."

There has been some debate about Weeden's work habits.

I've heard some people say he wasn't a quarterback who lived in the film room. Others said he did his homework, preparation was not an issue.

I don't know the truth.

I do know that having Campbell in Berea will push Weeden. The current coaching staff would be comfortable with playing Campbell at least as a short-term answer until the big-picture quarterback question can be addressed.

In 2010-11, Campbell started 18 games for Oakland with an 11-7 record. He doesn't rack up eye-popping stats -- 19 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions in those 18 games. He also completed 60 percent of his passes for an 84.3 rating.

He's solid, something the Browns want.

He's also a viable alternative to Weeden. But I sense the Browns want to see if Weeden can make a significant jump from his rocky rookie season of 2012.

The Browns also believe Weeden can be more effective in the new offense designed by Chudzinski/Turner, which will allow him to throw more often from the shotgun. Last season, there were 39 quarterbacks who threw at least 100 passes. Weeden ranked No. 38 in passes thrown from the shotgun -- 42 percent. The NFL average is nearly 67 percent, and Chudzinski used the shotgun on 74 percent of the passes thrown by Cam Newton in Carolina.

At Oklahoma State, Weeden threw nearly every pass from the shotgun, so this change should help him.

Campbell's signing is another indication CEO Joe Banner shot straight when he said there wasn't a quarterback worth drafting at No. 6. They are free to pick a quarterback lower in the draft or wait until next year.

But for now, they have the position covered with Weeden and Campbell, and the addition of Campbell also makes the quarterback situation better.

Colt McCoy won't be cut by Cleveland Browns, for now
Updated: March 27, 2013 at 03:52 p.m.

The arrival of Brandon Weeden last April was supposed to mean the end for Colt McCoy on the Cleveland Browns. McCoy stuck around.

The arrival of new coach Rob Chudzinski in January surely was going to be it for McCoy. He remained on the roster.
Harrison: The All-Underrated Team
Some players just don't get the attention they deserve. Elliot Harrison forms a team of the most slept-on studs in the NFL. More ...

After the signing of veteran quarterback Jason Campbell on Tuesday, McCoy's time with the Browns might be up. A Browns source told NFL.com's Albert Breer and NFL.com's Ian Rapoport on Wednesday that the team has no immediate plans to release McCoy for now, but a trade is possible. The key words there: "For now."

The Browns source responded to a report from The Plain Dealer that said McCoy is expected to be released or traded for a late-round pick shortly. It sounds like the Browns will exhaust all opportunities to get something in return for McCoy before letting him go.

It would be surprising if the Browns found a suitor for McCoy. Capable-enough potential backups like Kevin Kolb are available on the open market. There's little reason to give up a pick for a player who could be a No. 3 quarterback.

Perhaps McCoy will remain on the Browns' roster through the draft, but we'd be very surprised if he was on the team come minicamp season. He's the latest Browns "quarterback of the future" to fail to stick since the franchise re-boot in 1999, following Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.

The impending move is disappointing for so many in the Browns community, with Around The League's very own Marc Sessler ranking high on the sad scale. Sessler named his second son "Colton."

League sources confirm Sessler's first son was not named "Bernie." Colton is not available in a trade.

Browns still hoping they can trade Colt McCoy, not cut him
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 27, 2013, 3:38 PM EDT
Colt+Mccoy+St+Louis+Rams+v+Cleveland+Browns+_7qk2LSmXBcl Getty Images

Shortly after today’s report that Colt McCoy would soon be on the way out of Cleveland, the Browns tried to get out the word that McCoy can only be acquired via a trade.

NFL Network reported, citing Browns sources, said the team has no immediate plans to cut McCoy, but that the Browns are open to trading him.

Obviously, if you’re an NFL general manager who’s hoping to trade a player, you don’t want your potential trade partners to think that player will soon be available for nothing, so it’s easy to understand why the Browns want to put out the word that the way to acquire McCoy is via a trade.

But it’s harder to see why any team would trade for McCoy. He simply hasn’t been good enough in his three NFL seasons for it to make sense for a team to give up a player or a draft pick to acquire him.

So the Browns will probably cut McCoy. Even if they’re going to take their time about it. -PFT

Colt might be released - absolutely no NFL Team will trade for him once they know he will be released. Not at the 2.3 mil price - They can sign him as a FA cheaper.

Campbell vs Weeden - I will tell you all this before everyone goes nuts. This guys is better than that guy.

If we do have an OUTRIGHT COMPETITION where these guys don't know who their Starting QB is??? That can mean only ONE THING...We don't have a Starting QB!

This isn't Joe Montana competing with Steve Young here. If the coaches really don't know and they will have a competition...no matter who wins THEY WILL NOT BE OUR FRANCHISE QB.

I disagree ... to a point.

If Weeden wins, then he might be capable of being our franchise guy.

If Campbell wins, then we really don't have a franchise guy.

I disagree ... to a point.

If Weeden wins, then he might be capable of being our franchise guy.

If Campbell wins, then we really don't have a franchise guy.

...and? You're forgetting someone... What if McCoy wins?

Which universe are we in, now?
This isn't like the Seinfeld Bizzarro World episode, is it?

I thought implied but possibly not...sometimes I think people can read my mind.

If the competition Lingers on...it can mean only one thing...WE GOT NO QB!

Campbell. I don't with to prod Toad....but I always thought he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I thought he had some talent.

So If we got ONE OF THEM...coming out on top as the quick n obvious BETTER QB without waivering...They could become our Franchise QB being in the right place, right time. But either one regardless of how good they are. I see us making a serious investment in QB within the next 5 years. This is due to the Age of both of them.

At what?

Bingo?

Yahtzee?

Doubles Tennis?

He might stand a chance at winning those. Winning a starting job in the NFL? I just don't see it. He's not an NFL QB. He lacks in almost every area of ability an NFL QB must possess. He has decent mobility, and some leadership ability ..... but beyond that, there is nothing at all that is average, let alone special about him. Nothing. He is a guy a team would feel good about having as their backup .... until he had to play.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
