So what free agent QB's would have made people happy.

I was already advocating for Matt Moore as a possibility when the season ended and before he decided to return to Miami.

I also suggested that Chase Daniel could have been brought in.

Either one would have been better than Jason Campbell.

there was no one worth signing this year, maybe one or two in the draft but next year looks better than this year.

It was basically alex Smith trade or pray a team cuts someone worth something or that Weeden somehow develops into an average QB.

Campbell is a great signing. Hopefully this means no QB will be drafted by us in rounds 1-4. Weeden starts and if he is awful Campbell can take over.

Something tells me Weeden going to suck in camp and Campbell is going to win the starting role... either way you want to slice the pie... Weeden or Campbell starting = scary.

Campbell starting isn't so scary. In 2011, he led a team with less talent than this one to a 4-2 record. And the Raiders scored 23, 35, 34, 19, 25, and 24 points in those games. Not bad at all.

I still think Weeden wins the job (he's going to get the benefit of the doubt IMO if his play is close to Campbell's — since Campbell's ceiling is pretty clearly defined), but this team could do much worse than Campbell starting at QB.

Huh? Look up what happened a couple months after the Browns signed Jay Hilgenburg.

This situation reminds me of that one.

I was a fan of Jason Campbell as a draft pick coming out of college. I think he was value and would be good. Even his first year in the league. I'd love his signing if Weeden wasn't on the team. Also if Thaddeus Lewis hadn't made me want to see more of Him with his one game to end last year.

A bunch of other things that I think, don't matter.
It's often hard to root for free agents in the beginning of their time in Cleveland, because they are standing in the wake of another teams uniform. In other words, until they do something of note for the Browns, we're still waiting to see what they will do for the Browns.

Recent events would evidence that
Apparently I'm one of the worst folks around. So there's that.

NRTU.

Certain posters can now go huff paint.

I'm not going to point out how many times in the very-recent past that we've blown it by reaching for QB's in the draft out of desperation to replace the previously failed QB whom we reached for too highly in the draft. What I will say is that if we don't draft anyone else and Weeden fails, this'll have been a great move. There isn't a star QB in this draft but if we were desperate to find someone to "push" Weeden we could have easily reached too highly in this one for the next Brady Quinn.

Campbell isn't the QB of the future but he can be a stopgap that bridges us to the next QB should Weeden flop. If Weeden succeeds Campbell can run the exact same offense without us having to dumb it down to make up for any lack of arm-strength, meaning McCoy, should Weeds go down with injury. If Weeden fails and has to be sent packing, Campbell gives us a guy who can start for a year while the new guy gets up to speed. Truth-be-told both QB's are very similar, both physically and mentally, though it can be argued that Campbell is more suited to a pro-style offense.

It still wouldn't surprise me to see the Browns take a mid-round pick on one of the half-dozen or more QB's in this draft and stash him as the 3rd QB with the idea that he could be the future starter in a few years.

As for McCoy...he never had any trade-value to begin with, and I'd imagine we're not losing money by changing him out for Campbell. Our QB situation just got better, not worse.

I am not really sure why there is so much unconcealed hate for Colt on this board. I don't think he is a very good qb, but it baffles me why so many of you despise him. I am not saying we are going to keep him. I agree that he is almost certainly out of here. What I am saying, is I don't see what he did to garner so much hate.

Furthermore, if I compare what Colt did in his rookie year w/what Weeden did in his rookie year and also factor in the talent that both played with......then I come to a conclusion that Weeden performed at a lower level than Colt. Then, you add in that Colt is a hard worker and Weeden is lazy. Colt is younger than Weeden by quite a bit. And most of you talking about arm strength were just so positive that BQ was going to be better than DA. That turned out well.

I do understand why you don't want Colt as our qb, but I don't get all the hostility and hate. And I certainly don't understand how you hate on Colt, yet you give Weeden a pass, when in fact, he played under much more favorable conditions than Colt ever did.

I don't like Weeden. I think he is football dumb!!! I think he is lazy. I think he is way softer than Colt. Throwing it out of bounds on fourth down, sliding down when he could pick up the two yards for the first, throwing his coaches under the bus, holding the ball forever and ever and ever, making inaccurate throws. Never accepting blame. Colt ha more guts in his little finger than Weeden does in his entire body.

Allow me to reiterate: I do NOT think Colt is our qb of the future. I do think he will be gone. However, I don't get all the hate y'all have for him and I certainly don't get why you are so easy on Weeden while being so hateful on Colt.

Pointing out a player's shortcomings isn't hate or despising him. I think just about everyone here recognizes him as a stand up human being.

I still consider it probably the biggest fairy tale that Colt was anywher close to "tough". This dude took his eyes from downfield after 1second and played backyard footbal on every 2nd play...how about throwing it at your C's butt on 4th down late in a 3p game? Or how about to the ground becaue "the OL needed rest"

I don't feel like debating Colt vs Weeden, as it's not even worth it....it's not even close imho and you've made up your mind that this "backup catcher who loves the game" is a better guy to root for that you don't see the forest for the trees

It's finally over, so let's discuss Weeden vs Campbell

Weeden is lazy

This is the second or third time I've read this on here over the past day or so. I seem to recall this coming up some months ago. Is there an article or something that exists out there that mentioned that Weeden was lazy. Can someone link it if there is?

I agree.

Again, I don't know about this one. And that is a huge accusation. You're not the only to make it either so again I ask if someone can provide some evidence of this I would be interested in reading it.

Don't know if he's softer than Colt, and quite honestly it doesn't matter. He's soft. Period. I've never seen so many deer in the headlights looks from a QB over the course of a season as I saw with Weeden.

At least he didn't throw it to Alex Mack's rear end.

This bothered me quite a bit.

So you pick out two plays out of the years he's been here compared to a lifetime of mistakes and inadequacy in one seasons time and it's not worth the time for you to debate it? Wow, talk about lazy- no wonder you like Weeden so much... birds of a feather I guess...

Anyways, it's far from over my friend- It's just getting started!

There is a guy who just got a job at Texas A&M. He was at both OK. State and West Virginia. He was comparing the work ethic of G. Smith and Weeden. I don't have the link, but it shouldn't be hard to find. Someone will probably post it now that I brought it up.

In addition to that, did you read Banner's comments about Weeden and Gordon? Did you read or hear about TRich's comments? Did you hear Rich Gannon's comments? Mike Martz's comments? Did you watch him play? I am not getting on your case, that is just how I talk. LOL

Once again, I am NOT really defending Colt because I don't think he is the guy, but I just don't get how Weeden is getting a free pass, when he clearly played worse w/more talent around him and was put in a better situation. I am not kidding you......the guy infuriates me when I watch him play. He killed us last year and meanwhile, everyone is slamming Colt and giving this guy the benefit of the doubt.

Sorry, I don't get it!

A lot of us think Weeden wasn't any good last year, either, but some of us think he should be more in his comfort zone in this system and hope he will improve since he will inevitably be given a shot.

Slow-minded is slow-minded.

I could be wrong and have been before, but I don't see this guy making it. He is slow-witted. He isn't gutty. He doesn't have "it." His anticipation skills are zero. He is a wreck in the pocket. He doesn't lead. He doesn't accept responsibility. His footwork is a mess when pressured. He is mostly inaccurate.

He was put in a much better position than Colt, yet Colt gets nothing but grief, and most posters give Weeds a free pass. And again, I am NOT backing McCoy. I just don't get the double standard.

Oh, and I am not getting on your case, Steve. It's just a blanket statement, so don't take it personal.

My best answer to it is that we've seen enough to know that Colt isn't the answer to anything except the question "Who is the next player out of Cleveland?".

Weeden, while disappointing thus far, was still a rookie. I think all rookies deserve more than a one season look.

I like this move. Campbell has NEVER had a decent team around him. In Oakland he was playing very well until he broke his collarbone. Then they signed Palmer to a big contract and had to let him go. He was Cutler's back up. Jay Cutler is a damn good QB, but he was beat to death behind that line, and Campbell had no chance either.

Those saying he sucks, only remember his 1 start last year. If they took time to see what he did throughout his career, they would see a decent QB, who never had a good line to play behind. IMO, if Oakland didn't trade for Palmer, Campbell would still be their starter.

If Weeden beats him out, I will be happy. But the one thing most are overlooking, is that Campbell can read defenses and has a good TD to INT ratio, and a decent career QBR. If he starts for this team this year, I will not be mad at all. To say he sucks, is showing how uninformed one is.

Many wanted Matt Flynn last year, even though he had one good game in his career. This guy has won quite a few, and more recently was 11-7 as a starter in Oakland. He is hardly a journeyman as one poster implied. He was a starter in Washington and Oakland. His trade to Chicago was do to a knee jerk signing of Palmer.

I like Campbell. No he's not the future. But he's no slouch. BTW, when guys like Portland complain because the guy might win 9 games I just want to laugh. What friggin team have you been watching for the last decade? I'll take nine wins in a minute. Thinking that will keep the team from progressing is assinine. Winning breeds winning, and it also attracts FAs.

The posters that thought we could draft a replacement for Weeden this year, are living in a fantasy world.

This was a good move by the FO. So far I think they are doing very well.

I don't think he was in a better position at all. he had a better oline than colt but that's about it. what colt had was better coaching in his rookie year. what I mean by that is a coaching staff that played to his what he was good at.

weeden did not get that chance yet.

Going 8and8 or 9and7 is 'fun' but until we draft a real, bonafide, young, franchise QB this team will not have sustained success. So yes, to me, having Cambell win 7 to 9 games for a couple years does nothing for me. What it does do is keep us from the top QB draft prospects. As far as attracting top FA talent, money talks. So does a young stud QB that'll be around for a decade or better. So do you want to be Buffalo forever 8 and 8. Or the Colts and be set again for the next 10-15 years. I'll take the Colts' route personally.

i don't know, Campbell has 76TDs in 71 starts. about the same rate of TDs/game as Weeden(14 in 15games) & McCoy(21 in 21).

his biggest yardage seasons were right on par with yards/game (226) of Weeden(225) & just above McCoy(210).

Campbell's YPA (6.7) is barely above, you guessed it, Weeden (6.5) and McCoy(6.3).

Campbell's sack%(6.6) is between Weeden (5.1) and McCoy(7.8).

Campbell limits INTs though, so he has that going for him, which is nice. But, he's a backup QB.

It's settled then. Start Thaddeus Lewis!

Just for information. I'm becoming convinced that this Campbell signing has settled it. The Browns are drafting A quarterback at #6.
So. 1. Geno/Landry/Matt/Tyler/?
2. Weeden
3. and I want to see more of. Thaddeus Lewis.

I don't agree with most of the posters that Weeden will be the starter here. First of all what has Weeden done that was so good that many of you think he is our #1 guy? He was not drafted by the current FO and they have no loyalties to him. Also why would they pay Campbell over 2 Mil+ for more than one season if he was not brought in to be the starter? Last year Weeden was drafted and given the starter job with no competition. With what they are paying Cambell don't be surprised if you hear in camp that he is starting. He is mobile, can run for a first down when the pocket collapses and he can read defenses. Plus he will benefit with a good OL the Browns provide. Weeden in my opinion should have had a better rookie season with the ample amount of time our OL gave him each game. Many QBs would kill to have that much throwing time. Sure Shumur ran a horrible offense but that still does not excuse the fact that our OL gave Weeden a lot of time to throw the ball. What would Luck , Wilson or RG III have done with that much time to throw? Unless someone can list Weeden's strengths I don't see him as our starter over a FA QB who is getting over 2 Mil+ for two years.

If it comes down to arm strenghth, its a tie, if comes down to looking off the reciever and not geting the pass batted down at the line (weeden21) Campbell will start.

"Banner took it a step further when he lumped Weeden in with second-year receiver Josh Gordon as two high picks that need to step it up.

"These are guys who have shown some potential," he said. "But if they flattened at the level they're at now or didn't have the determination to be the best they could be because of work ethic and things like that, then they probably won't be good enough to be on a team that will try to win a championship. "

"A clue to what Banner may have been alluding to was found in a recent story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who's regarded as the top quarterback in this draft. His quarterbacks coach, Jake Spavital, also coached Weeden at Oklahoma State, and indicated Smith's work ethic was superior. He also believed Smith should go No. 1 overall in this draft.

"(Smith) studies it," Spavital said. "With Brandon Weeden, I couldn't say that about him. I love the guy to death but he had some good guys around him. Brandon knew how to get the ball to those guys. There were times at West Virginia when (Smith) had to create things."

Richardson: Weeden had trouble reading defenses

Running back Trent Richardson told NFL Network's Steve Wyche during an off-camera chat between segments on "NFL AM" from the Scouting Combine that Browns QB Brandon Weeden had trouble reading defenses on occasion during his rookie season.

Wyche then relayed those comments about Weeden on the air to his co-host, Mark Kriegel.

He also told me a little bit more about Brandon Weeden,'' Wyche said via the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "He said as a rookie, [Weeden] really had trouble reading defenses from time to time and they had to skew their offense a little bit, sometimes somewhat predictable. [He] thinks things are going to open up a little bit, but he really does like Brandon Weeden.''

It will be interesting to see if Weeden "really does like" Richardson after those comments.

Vers don't worry. If Weeds doesn't improve A LOT this season he will be getting the same or worse treatment around here than Colt is right now.

I don't think he was in a better position at all. he had a better oline than colt but that's about it. what colt had was better coaching in his rookie year. what I mean by that is a coaching staff that played to his what he was good at.

weeden did not get that chance yet.

I thought everyone said Mangini and Daboll were stupid. I thought everyone was saying how much better the WCO would be. Hmmmm, must have been a dream.

I disagree w/you about who had better/worse circumstances:

Colt came into a new offense when he was a rookie. He was not supposed to play. Injuries forced the Browns to play Colt. I thought he showed flashes. Much more than I have seen from Weeden. The next year is a completely new offense...the WCO. It was a lockout year and Colt did not have the benefit of normal camps. On the other hand, Weeden did indeed come to a new offense, but he was here the entire time and he was given almost all the reps right away.

Additionally, the talent level was worse for Colt.

--We both agree on the OL.
--TRich or the back of the week when Colt was there?
--Gordon or whoever would start from week to week when Colt was there?

Yet, who has better stats? Who led more 4th quarter comebacks? People act like Colt has played so many more games than Weeden? Has he---really? Who's younger?

Once again, I really don't think Colt is the long-term solution for the Browns, but Weeden has been even worse while playing under more favorable circumstances.

And he certainly won't have his dad, I mean PoeticG, on his side, either like Colt does!

There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.
