because the throws were there. take a look at the last drive vs. Baltimore for an example. the throw Gordon dropped vs. Indy, etc. there were plays that Colt just couldn't make.

Weeden didn't make them enough and there's a good chance we don't have the QB of the future on our roster, but, if he is, then there's a much, much better chance it's Weeden.

Okay, I suppose we just see it differently. However, I believe Weeden is weak in every single one of the areas I mentioned.

Now, I could be wrong. Maybe new coaching will make all of those negatives vanish into the night. I hope they do. We'll see.

So maybe Campbell off the market enhances chances of moving McCoy into a trade if another club wants a backup? Kind of a reach. Hope we get something for him rather than a straight release.

Throwing PoeticG a bone here as he is getting nipped by the pack.

One thing Colt did show me in 2010 was he had "IT" - down a touchdown late in the game going into spread he looked very natural. He led the huddle to get the play n to the line fast - comfortable in shotgun - nothing there he extended the play n even would pick up a first down with his legs - unfortunately similar to THE DRIVE w/Elway. But Colt did show me that. He was different at the end of 2010 when I think he came back too soon from the high ankle sprain. 2011 is where I soured on Colt...he became worse as the season went on to the point I presumed he just wasn't a starter. But there was some very very bad results on passes 20+ Cribbs was open especially the first 4 games or so. After those bad misses Shurmur stopped calling those plays we only saw shorter stuff.

So 2012 Weeden came around you can tell a difference on the deep outs n the long ball. Not 40 yard in the air lofted balls. Heck one of the weakest arm QBs we had was Holcomb n he was pretty good at that. Colt can hit that same pass n I would equate his arm similar to Holcomb possibly Colts a little stronger. Weeden had a similar arm to DA possibly Weedens a little weaker. I saw Digress instead of Progress so possibly Colt was not as bad as I thought. So if you just lets say take the deep out n lay on top of each other the pass similar to how NFL Network would show two Prospects running the 40 on top of each other spliced in so to say. Weeden's deep out would get there so much quicker - For what we have in mind if Colt started similar to Holcomb he would have to throw that deep route within 2 seconds to get it right. Weeden can hold onto that ball a little longer to get that last Safety Read??? n fire it.

But...one thing I didn't see from Weeden that I did from Colt (in that early 2010 season before the ankle sprain) The IT factor. Remember how our vets were almost Giddy in their explanation of Colt leading them down the field for a Victory. IT factor.

Look in retrospect - we have mega cap room to shoulder the 2.3 mil we will pay Colt.
#1 or #2 btw how much we paying Weeden this year? Campbell? Does it really matter if during "THE COMPETITION" one of them become #2 vs #3??? I do see us having two 30 year old QBs (Weeden will be 30 by the start of the season) Although a good OL here - we are talking about Vertical Stretch. Guess what that means more 5-7 step drops n the need for some double moves = over 3 seconds to develop. Who knows if we are competitive n the game is close the only way they might be able to stop us is to try n hit the QB hard n often. We suck n way behind we will see a lot softer defenses giving up underneath stuff. We just might need more than 1 QB that needs to be competitive maybe more than 2.

The big question is how they value Lewis. I'd like for us to Trade Lewis 6th or 7th to the Eagles (Shurmur seems to believe in him) n he is mobile. But if Chud/Norv like Lewis more than Colt...that is the difference maker.

Do I think Colt wins "The competition" No - Way sorry. Can he? Sure I guess but that means both Weeden n Campbell LOST THE JOB more than Colt Won it.

Would I have confidence if Injuries happen to #1 n #2 QBs n we need Colt to win games n even take the Browns into the Playoffs. YES I WOULD 16 game season not my choice - competent n can win games...100% Yes!

Banner says McCoy won’t be released, could be traded

Posted by Mike Florio on March 28, 2013, 9:28 AM EDT

In the aftermath of the Browns’ acquisition of quarterback Jason Campbell, it’s clear that someone eventually will have to go.

That someone eventually could be Colt McCoy.

Refuting a report that McCoy will soon be released or traded, CEO Joe Banner said in an interview with ESPN Radio Cleveland (the Browns’ new flagship partner) that McCoy won’t be cut — but that the Browns could be willing to trade McCoy.

The market for McCoy could depend on whether and to what extent teams find quarterbacks in the draft. While McCoy is unlikely to get a chance to compete to be a starter elsewhere, teams like the Bills, Bears, Saints, Buccaneers, and 49ers could still be looking backups.

As to the starter in Cleveland, Banner said Brandon Weeden will enter training camp at No. 1 on the depth chart, but that Campbell will compete with the 2012 first-round pick.

Of course, there’s still a chance that the Campbell acquisition primarily was aimed at providing the Browns cover for taking a quarterback in one of the first two or three rounds of the draft. With Weeden and Campbell under contract, no one will suspect the Browns of making a play for a another passer.

If, for example, the Browns eventually decide to take Geno Smith with the sixth overall pick, it’s important that the two teams immediately behind them (the Cardinals and Bills) don’t see it coming — or they may try to leapfrog Cleveland in the draft order.

Why would anyone trade for him if they think we will release him? (serious question, is there an advantage?)

To ensure that you get him as opposed to getting into a bidding war (!) if Colt is simply released...

Why Banner just came out n stated - "We will not cut Colt" . And I hope he keeps to his word so that when teams hear those words in the future they know he means it.

I don't think Colt will be in THE COMPETITION. Unless one or both of the battlers fall off the face of the Competition. Which would not be good news for us. But we will carry him for 2013 - Of course we would like to trade him before he hits the FA Market in 2014.

Run on QBs a team looking to add a backup with their 3rd, 4th or 5th round picks...got a choice of what is on the Board or a pretty young NFL Experienced Colt? He can most definitely be a draft day trade...even moving up 3rd round into mid-late 2nd round if there is a guy we are targeting n won't be there when we pick in the 3rd...you can see Colt being part of it???

The advantage is knowing you'll get him before he hits the market. If its a hot commodity, teams will trade picks to secure a player.

Contract is a factor, too. A cheap contract helps a trade, a big contract hurts it. Colt is due $2 million. hard to trade that contract when you know he would sign for less once released and unemployed.

Only if there were multiple suitors for him who liked his value. That way, if you trade for him, you don't have to compete with other teams for him in the open market.

Not sure how much demand there is for Colt.

You would think Jerry Jones would give us a 5th for Colt and his donuts. Texas alumni would love the deal and so would Colt.

Really we gotta face facts about McCoy and his $2.3 million dollar salary: Nobody was going to trade for him when better guys were still out there to be had for free. Better to take the bird-in-the-hand in Campbell instead of risking losing him all in the hopes we'll get a 6th round pick for McCoy.

The only place I see him fitting in is New Orleans. Just a guess on my part.

2mil is a lot for Colt as a 3rd QB, but it's not a lot for a backup QB....Campbell got 3.5mil last season from the Bears and I suspect he got anywhere from 2-4 from us "to compete"

I still don't see how anyone will throw a pick our way...maybe a desperate 7th we can draft our next franchise kicker with.

We could hold to him until TC, naybe even carry him through it in case of some injury, but that would be somewhat cruel to Colt...

The contract starts being guaranteed right after final cuts or just before the 1st game, right? or not since it's his rookie deal? only for vets? I get confused with that stuff...anyway, the most polite thing to do is to shop him now and if get nothing, then just cut him

It will probably be some type of conditional pick.
And I would suspect on draft day.

I wouldn't mind it one bit if we kept Colt and got rid of Weeden instead. Would that be a good idea? lol Probably not. (?)

...Not that i think Colt is better than Weeden, but they certainly are 2 different QB's, if you know what i'm sayin'. I think Colt has a better head on his shoulders for the game while obviously Weeden has the much stronger arm of the two.

It's just that i wouldn't mind it one bit if i didn't see Weeden play again for the Browns. I'm just not into Weeden, i guess. Not that i hate him, cuz i don't, but... well.... you know!

Chud and Turner would have to scrap their offense. McCoy would be better off with Shurmer's offense.

Yep.

I wrote this on another thread, but I guess that it fits here as well, since this is a Colt McCoy thread and all ......

I do think that Shurmur's offense made both QBs look bad ...... but McCoy was supposed to be well suited to this offense. This was supposed to be his bread and butter. Instead he looked worse, and worse as he "progressed". He did the same in his 1st year as well. His final 2 games under Mangini, (against Baltimore and Pittsburgh) when he completed only half of his passes with 1 TD and 6 INT, seemed to be the beginning of the end of him.

Further, when a guy lacks any elite abilities, he has to play better than he is. There isn't room for upside, and improvement based on his physical skills. If he plays poorly, and has no great abilities, then he is not going to get the 2nd chance that a guy with greater physical ability will. It's just the way things are. It's like a WR who is 6'5" and 220#, and runs a 4;3 ..... compared to a WR who is 5'9", and 175#, and who runs a 4.6. One guy is going to get every opportunity to succeed, and the other will not. It's the same at every position. The guy with superior talent and physical ability is going to get the extra shot, if anyone will.

That guy is not Colt McCoy.

Yes, i don't think if we are going to be throwing long Colt is the right guy. You can tell it takes a lot for him to throw deep. Noodle arm of sorts. Still, i don't think he was ever given the right opportunity to play here (no O line). Smart guy though.

Not to mention that outside of the accuracy, McCoy has some of the same characteristics that their current QB possess.

But those that hate McCoy won't agree with that.

Responding to others that say McCoy doesn't have Trade Value. I disagree. If the right circumstance came to light, I think he could have value. I'd expect no better than a 6th for him, but I'd take it.

I wish we had a QB with the arm of Weeden, the accuracy of Manning (payton) and the age and heart of McCoy.,. That would be about the perfect guy..

McCoy has value. I wish him well.

Happens all the time Jango.. Happens all the time. Will McCoy be the next one? I don't really believe so, but why debate it.. Not worth the time.

I do think he's gone no matter what Banner says. I don't think he's foolin anyone.

This Colt McCoy thing, and how everybody seems to dislike him and immediately dismiss him just blows my mind. Does nobody remember how solid he looked in the four or five games he played in back in 2010 with Eric Mangingi as head coach and Peyton Hillis at running back? Colt showed some real flashes of having some serious talent, and he did it with very limited talent around him.

Tom Brady or Peyton Manning could have been our Quarterback in 2011 and it would be made zero difference. How was McCoy suppose to go out and win with a bad offensive line? Absolutely zero running game, and virtually no receivers to throw to on a consistent basis? Not to mention god awful coaching and play calling by Pat Shurmer.

Colt was the problem you say? Oh really? Well Mr. Weeden went 5-11 in 2012, a whopping 1 game better than in 2011....

I'm not trying to downplay Brandon Weeden, and I'm also not trying to be a Colt McCoy homer but everybody needs to look at the real picture. We had really bad coaching, virtually no weapons on offense and a lackluster offensive line, and this was in 2011. Last year we upgraded and still didn't look a whole lot better in some games due to Weeden's poor judgement and our poor play calling.

It's my opinion that Colt McCoy should be given a fair shot in training camp and the preseason to show what he can do. It literally hurts nothing giving him a chance to compete with Weeden and Campbell.

By the way signing Campbell was a joke. He is older than Weeden, and slower than Weeden. He moves slow in the pocket, has a slow release and has become injury prone. Campbell reached his maximum potential years ago.

Colt looked decent in 2010 when nobody had game tape on him, and the team was running the ball like a well-oiled machine.

Teams gathered more info on him, the running game went to hell, and he was exposed for being a horrible QB which he is.

If you ask me though, I don't see a QB on this roster that can't be good without the help of a running game.

The great QB's now can flourish even when rushing numbers are non-existent.

I am hoping Norv's prior success with RB's will bode well for Weeden.

People who love Colt love to throw around numbers that make it seem like he's as good as Weeden, but those of us who watch the games know that's not true.

Weeden isn't ever going to be a top 10 QB, but he's better than McCoy. That's the reason why he is going to be on the team and Colt is as good as gone. Jimmy Haslam, Joe Banner, and Mike Lombardi didn't draft any of these guys. They owe nothing to anyone, so I don't want to hear about playing favorites.

Unfortunately Dallas can't afford him.
They've got to do some serious hoop jumping to get enough money to sign their draft picks. They aren't going to take on 2mil for a backup QB,when guys with Colt's abilities hit the draft every single year.

Well, the good news is that this all means that the weather should be turning for the better real soon, because it just isn't Spring or Summer in Cleveland without a QB competition between mediocre options.

That once they got tape on him stuff is way over rated - especially on Colt with us in 2010 as we were not a passing offense - Tape you mean on the formation that we had Joe T n St. Clair spread out wide making a Bunch look on either side with TE on the line by the sidelines the X n Z WRs in between the TEs n OTs a slot WR on the left side n only 3 interior OL w/Colt in shotgun...you mean that tape...lol

J/K... It wasn't like tape on Holcomb in 02 where he WAS the offense n they went zone on him... or in 07 on DA where again the air attack was THE OFFENSE n they took away the deep routes making DA beat them with short routes his nemesis.

Colt was beating teams...but he was losing games n he was finishing strong.

2011 none success with Colt had NADA to do with Defenses catching up to him.

Sophmore QBs traditionally take a step back and that is because Year 2 is when they entire playbook is now envoked as opposed to the dummy down version Rookies normally get.

Colt has the entire playbook...I always remembered the words...Colt knew the plays but he didn't know how to execute the plays yet. New O he should have been treated as a rookie. On Paper the WCO was to be best for Colt...but not Holmgrens WCO...I do question if that was Holmgren's offense or Shurmurs???

I would say the Packers WCO is best for Colt. Not the O we have seen the last two seasons. Hasselback maybe...?

Anyways I don't think Colt throws the Deep Outs, Seam n sideline Fly (9), Post Corner, etc routes well enough to be efficient in the O that Chud/Norv are looking to make here. Of course if push came to shove n we were down to Colt as our QB...I am sure out of the 300-400 page Offense that Norv has accumulated he could style it to fit Colt's strengths more. Just not off the bat their Starting QB.

JMHO - Back up QBs get a 2nd rounder sometimes - I'm sure we would accept less for Colt. He is a bonafide Back up...who could turn out to be a Garcia type of starter. Real outside chance of MEGA PROGRESS to become a Brees type of QB.

Browns CEO Joe Banner says QB Brandon Weeden will take first-team reps, Colt McCoy could be traded
By Nate Ulrich Published: March 28, 2013

During a radio interview this morning, Browns CEO Joe Banner said incumbent starting quarterback Brandon Weeden will take reps with the first-team offense this offseason, with recently signed Jason Campbell pushing him for the top spot on the depth chart.

Banner also said the Browns have no plans, for now, to release backup quarterback Colt McCoy, but they are open to trading him.

Campbell joined the Browns by signing a two-year contract Tuesday night. The deal is worth $3.75 million, National Football Post’s Joel Corry reported today. Campbell will address the local media during a conference call at 1:15 p.m. today.

The Browns formally announced their previously reported radio rights deal with WKNR (850-AM), WKRK (92.3-FM) and WNCX (98.5-FM) this morning, and the team’s brass participated in a media blitz as a result. Banner broke down the franchise’s quarterback situation during an interview with WKNR (850-AM).

Here are some highlights:

Will Campbell compete? Will it be an open competition in training camp with Weeden for the quarterback job?: “The word ‘open,’ I probably don’t want to go quite that far. But we’re going to play the best players when we get to the first game of the season. Obviously some players come in at various positions and they’re getting the reps with the ones, so to speak, and that will certainly be Brandon. But we’re going to go through minicamps and training camp and by the time we get to the first game, our goal is to play whoever the best players are. So he [Campbell] will certainly get a chance to compete.”

What is about Campbell that excited you the most?: “He’s played in a few different systems, including one that has some similarities to this. We think his strengths match up well with what we need. He brings some veteran experience, which sometimes can be overrated but also has some value. He was anxious to play here. He thought the situation fit him well. So I think in terms of creating some competition and somebody that whether they win the job or due to injury plays at some point we could still feel good about he fit the bill.”

What is your plan for McCoy?: “Our plan is to keep Colt. That is not etched in stone if somebody was interested in trading for him, if we got to a part in training camp where we had to make some tough decisions that could include whether we even keep two or three quarterbacks. He’ll compete with Jason just as Jason will compete with Weeden. That’s really what you want to have on a team is everybody feeling like they’re going to beat the guy ahead of them or next to them. We have certainly not decided he won’t be on the team or that he’ll be traded, but at the same time, I can’t honestly rule that out. He certainly won’t be released, again, until we get to a situation we may have to make some numbers decisions, then who knows what will happen?”

How do you assess your quarterback situation?: “I feel like we’re at a to-be-determined position. Frankly, that’s not really where you want to be. So we have Brandon, and I think anybody watching saw some things that were very encouraging last year and saw some things that they feel like that needs to get better if we have the guy. He’s going to be given every chance. In [coach Rob Chudzinski] and [offensive coordinator] Norv [Turner], he probably has two of the best, maybe even the two best people to be coached by in a system that should fit him very well. So I think he’s going to get every chance anybody in his position could possibly have to prove he has the ability to take us to the next level.”

Will you rule out drafting a quarterback with the addition of Campbell?: “No. Not that this was done by me individually, but if you look at what I’ve been part of [during my tenure as president of the Philadelphia Eagles], we had Donovan McNabb and picked Kevin Kolb. Whether it’s the right pick or not, I view quarterbacks as assets. If you happen to be lucky enough to end up with two, which is extremely rare, that can’t be a problem. You just have to figure out how to take advantage of it. So we will continue to pick quarterbacks, develop quarterbacks, with the full understanding that we’re never going to be what we want to be until we are really strong at that position.”

Campbell joined the Browns by signing a two-year contract Tuesday night. The deal is worth $3.75 million

How did we sign Jason Campbell for half what Chase Daniel is getting per year?

I'm sorry, I kinda love this FO.

I find it interesting that it was earlier reported that Banner said that the Browns won't be releasing Colt. Here is the actual quote:

Quote:

Basically he's covering all possiblities and not saying anything, but I guarantee you that if Colt eventually gets released, some people with an agenda against Banner are going to come on here and call him a liar.

I for one will hate to see Colt go, but he is going one way or another ... JMHO

Purple type = sarcasm here.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

To make sarcasm work, it is important to let the other person figure out if you are being sarcastic. Purple just takes the fun out of being an ass.

I kind of agree with that .... thus I never use purple.

I like the guy and the initiative he took. For example scheduling those workouts in the lockout year so he and his receivers could get some work in. More QBs and just athletes in general should do that. Russell Wilson is a great example of a guy who does stuff like that (and there are many more out there of course.)

That said the NFL has a cruel numbers and business side to it that can't be ignored and in many ways 'Not For Long' is an accurate descriptor of the league. Personally my loyalties are with the Cleveland Browns and it really takes a special player/person for me to really get attached to. I do wish Colt the best but his days in Cleveland appear to be numbered.

The shots Colt took because of the Saint Claire debacle at RT is probably why we are even having this discussion. I think Colt never fully recovered from the shot he took in the Bama game and then the right tackle position just finished him off. Good kid, I think everyone wanted him to succeed but his arm gets weaker after every throw and his accuracy follows.
