http://www.ohio.com/blogs/cleveland-brow...-schum-1.385042 The Browns have signed punter Jake Schum, the team announced today. Schum spent two seasons at the University at Buffalo (2010-11), where he had 119 career punts for an average of 38.7 yards. Twenty-four of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. Schum, 24, did not play professionally last season. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Schum transferred to Buffalo after spending one season (2007) at Buffalo State College. Schum and fellow punter Spencer Lanning will compete this offseason. The Browns have not re-signed free-agent Reggie Hodges, who spent the past three seasons with the team.

Maybe he's a "camp leg" ... you know, so our regular punter's leg doesn't fall off. Like what they do with QBs.

Well .. we usually have 2 punters early in camp so we can run teams drills ...... as well as 2 place kickers.
No big deal. They'll take a look through the early camps and decide whether or not there's anything useful there.

This guy would be great for us if our offense keeps its reputation going of stalling out every drive at the 45.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

He's a punter. Contrary to what some say, the punt is not the most important play in football, and should be the last thing on the minds of a successful football team.
Who cares what punter we have?

I care.
A good punter increases the other teams offense by 50 to 100 yards per game to score the same amount of points.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

What punter does that?
Idk if I agree with 50 - 100 yards of impact. But definitely 30 - 50. I read somewhere that a team punts 5 times a game on average. If you have a punter that averages 45 yards per punt rather than 37, that equates to 40 yards of additional offense needed to score.

Kicker by committee. We'll try WRs and RBs first, if that doesn't work, we'll try the CBs. Heaven help us if Rubin ever has to trot out.
OR...we just go for it every time.

if we convert on 50% we end up breaking even. I'll take it plus it wipes out the whole other team's "special team" and we can just focus on 3 aspects of the game vs 5- offense, Defense, Kickoffs.
eliminate the waste of FG and Punting. we could free up at least 3-4 players that won't be needed for special teams.
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

And there you go we know for certain this guy sucks...lol
1. 2 years since he punted in Buffalo...guarantee you they have been trying out punters n kickers. Media just got a hold of Kickalicious kid. Here is somebody from NOWHERE. This makes me think the kid has a Bazooka for a leg than a wet noodle.
2. Yes, he could be just Camp fodder so that our Punter does not tire out his leg...of course we don't know WHO that punter is.
3. Buffalo...do you know how cold it is in Buffalo do you know how dead the ball gets in below freezing weather? Below Zero weather? Blizzards? ummm hear of the Snow Belt?
4. Univ. of Buffalo has TUNNELS to go from class to class cause of the FEET of snow.
38.7 is that NET? They will see what he does against a rush...when we sign a kid like this from NOWHERE for PUNTER...sorry I think of FIND not BUM. Then again I am a HOMER

Hoof Prints: Very good athlete who has a huge leg...improved his consistency in his first season after transferring from Buffalo State.
Sophomore (2010): Served as the team’s primary punter for the season, leading the team in every single punting category... totaled 58 punts for 2,231 yards - a 38.5 average... had 13 punts land inside the opponent’s 20 yard line, also best on the team... his longest punt of the season went for 62 yards.http://www.buffalobulls.com/sports/fball/2010-11/bios/schum_jacob_cs0lHe'll definitely have to do better than 38.5, hopefully he's improved since his college. Buffalo is cold, but colleges don't typically play any games after Thanksgiving. Cleveland in December/first week of January will be every bit as cold as what he saw in Buffalo in November.

Average distance per punt is a terrible stat to evaluate a punter on. I would say relatively few punts are made with the goal of kicking the ball as far as possible. 62 yards as a long tells me the kid can get it out there if need be. However, I'd want to see how good he is at placing the ball with his kicks when that is the goal. We'll only really know that by watching him in camp and/or during preseason games.

Yep. A punter needs quickness, (to get the punt away) distance, placement, and hang time as some major attributes. He can have a cannon leg, but if he routinely kicks away from his coverage ..... or punts line drive kicks that get to the returner and allow him to get going before the coverage gets into place, then he'll fail.

Looking at punter stats makes no sense to me as you have no idea about where the ball was placed. If he kicks 35 yds. but pins the opponent behind the 20. Good punt. You get my point.

Yep. That falls under placement in my eyes. (along with kicking to the proper area so the coverage is in position to make the tackle, and so on)

Indeed. However, in the long run kickers get a balance of kicks which usually lead to a higher average per kick.
I suppose he could have attempted all of his punts from the other teams 40 and pinned them on their own 5 every time. Years of watching the game tells me that probably isn't the case. Something tells me he can hit it well with nice yardage. Something also tells me he is inconsistent with a fair number of 15-20 yard shanks.
I think we see some ability and hope we can coach him well enough over the next few months and he takes the coaching well enough to eliminate most of those shanks and his average heads up in to the mid 40's +.

Isn't it also true that the net yards for a punt is based on the return as well? like he could punt it 60 yards but if the returner returns it for 30 yards, the net yards were 30?
i might be way off here
