linkThe Browns have signed kicker Brandon Bogotay, and released linebacker Chris Gocong and defensive back Usama Young. The Cleveland Browns today released linebacker Chris Gocong and safety Usama Young, the team announced. In addition, the club signed kicker Brandon Bogotay (pronounced: BO-guh-tay) as a free agent. A three-year letterman as a kicker at the University of Georgia (2009-11), Bogotay appeared in 14 contests, while kicking behind current Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh, who as a rookie in 2012 was voted to the NFC Pro Bowl squad. During his collegiate career, Bogotay handled kickoff duties as eight of his 29 career kickoffs went for touchbacks. He also converted all seven career PATs. As a senior, he made one of two field goal attempts, as his only miss came from 52 yards. Before attending the University of Georgia, Bogotay spent one season at Grossmont College in El Cajon, California, where he was named a First-Team All-Southern Conference selection after converting 15-of-23 field goals with a long of 52 yards. Born May 8, 1989, the 6-3, 207-pound Bogotay attended Patrick Henry High School in his hometown of San Diego, California. Gocong was acquired in a 2010 trade with Philadelphia. Since that time he started 32 games and totaled 141 tackles with 5.5 sacks, six passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. He spent all of last season on injured reserve with a ruptured right Achilles sustained in training camp. Young was signed as an unrestricted free agent in 2011. In his two seasons with the team he played in 29 games with 19 starts and posted 118 tackles, four interceptions, 1.5 sacks, eight passes defensed and a fumble recovery.

Not surprised these two were released. What is surprising, to me at least, is the timing. We are thin at both positions, especially FS, and would have thought this would have happened later on this year once we addressed possible replacements.
The Gocong release should free up a couple million. Best of luck to both guys.

No surprised here. Neither, Gocong (big man, can't run) nor Young (little man, can't hit) fit the new defense (big men that can run, little men that can hit).
I am sure many a tear will be shed over Usama Young being cut. He was a favorite of many posters.

i'm not worried about replacing Usama (FS) and Gocong (ILB). however, I am curious to see who we replace them with.
who are our projected starters at those slots?
JMJ at ILB w/ DQ? Gipson at FS?

I'm a little surprised they cut Gocong. Surprised they took so long to cut Usama. Think I'll wait a while to buy my Bogotay jersey.

Young is crap. We know he is crap. No use in letting him take up a roster space.

That's who I think they'd be... unless they prefer Fort to JMJ. We have three safeties on the roster, Hagg and Ward being the other two. That is, unless, they consider Bademosi a free safety. I'm posting projected pre-draft depth charts with needs for all NFL teams on my site tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I have the time.

Not sure this surprises anyone. Timing perhaps on Gocong seems a bit soon,, But otherwise,, ehh..
Don't know a thing about Bogotay.. anyone got the scoop on him or is this fodder.

I know Usama Young did a lot in the community, so I applaud him for that.
On the field, a different story. I'll never forget him "attempting" to "tackle" Jared Cook from the Titans.

Whyy! First Maiava, Now Gocong? Hmm. Good luck!
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Gocong's nearly $5 million contract was the factor here, IMO. I think I read a report saying the Browns were going to ask him to take a pay cut. But I think they knew they were gonna let him go no matter what. But again, surprised it happened now instead of later on once the replacement was determined. Not sure any of the current players could have done as good a job as him at ILB. But then again, Dawson wasn't signed simply for $$ purposes and age. It could be the same here as well.
That and an overhaul/rebuild/whatever you want to call it is happening in Berea. The FO and coaching staff are releasing people they can while dead money is not that big a factor or a factor at all. I liked Gocong but the Browns' process is fine by me. All new regimes do it. They wanna bring in their guys...and over time they will...over this season and next.

Gocong was slow before the achilles injury. He might be at Bartonesque speeds after the injury. He is also not the pass rushing threat we would like at the outside linebacker position.
In other words, he brings nothing to the table that we want. Other than that, he's great.

Thank god Usama Young is gone. Worst tackler I've seen on this team since Ralph Brown.
Gocong is a bit of a shame though. I felt he performed decently although he never really lived up to his draft hype. Guessing the Achilles recovery perhaps is not going as smoothly as it could. I hope he gets another shot somewhere- maybe as a 4-3 DE and get him back to his college roots.

Usama is garbage that should have been tossed seasons ago. Gocong would have been serviceable in the 3-4, but oh well I def won't lose sleep over it. I loved his goal line stand against the Steelers where he popped that RB, and hard too.

a 4/3 linebacker that wasn't very good. a FS that sucked. no big deal. there will be a lot more garbage cut before the season starts.

Lots can happen in the draft but maybe they'll give shots to the people you just mentioned. The same could be the case at CB with Bademosi. Or maybe they like Bademosi at FS.

What's funny is how so many keep denying the term "rebuild" while we "rebuild"!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Well, we all saw it coming...but the timing is odd. They released Colt after they signed a QB...since we weren't exactly against the cap, does this mean we will or are about to sign a FS or ILB? I hope so....or at least announce a re-signing of our own core guys like Ward or Mack.
After getting rid of Colt's, Gocong's and Usama's contracts, we now have about 35mil in cap space again

I could go back and give you dozens of such posts when Banner, Lombardi, Horton etc were announced and I was pilloried for saying we're going to be going through an overhaul.
But maybe I didn't clarify not restricting myself to the contents of this thread.

Very Curious on the timing of this all???
Young...not a long term answer but what surprises me is we did not invest in FA...does this mean we are ready to sign an older investment such as Woodson. or CB Noumasanwhatever his name is
But would have thought we could have waited till after the draft...or before FA market very curious.
Gocong...we just opened up our Volunteer Conditioning program...I wonder how much this release is about how he looked physically???
I won't get into some big debate over somebody no longer a Brown - But I liked Gocong I thought he blitzed well n I was curious how he was going to do with the Attack D. Although the acquiition of Kruger sort of was the first nail cause initially Gocong was penciled in at SOLB. Thought he was moving Inside again. The timing was a little weird on this but again I'm wondering if it was a coincidence that we started our conditioning program yesterday n he was released today?
Did Young come in out of shape???
Bogotay just another tryout that we will hope for some sort of cream rising.
So now I assume we have the most available Cap Space.
LB w/Achilles Tendon rupture I guess have a difficult time. Usama not a force of any kind but thought we'd get a replacement before letting him go.

I think we're essentially headed for a rebuild too, but it's not like the people released so far fully encapsulate that just yet....
- Cribbs and Dawson were expected by many to be gone no matter the regime. - Rucker was the odd man out simply for the scheme change but still people wanted a RDE w/ #6 if we stayed in the 4-3. - Sheldon Brown and Fujita fall in line with the first point...
We have made some signings, both starters and depth, but I think the real sign of the "rebuild" will happen if someone is traded or released not many saw coming. It still could happen.
But when the smoke clears, I do believe the new FO likes much of the young players here. Perhaps it's a shorter rebuild if the young players can make the defensive scheme shift. I don't think much will happen on the offensive side, except for Weeden perhaps, if he can't run the offense.

Nothing to think of in terms of the timing except that the FO realizes that we can replace what we would get from those two with just about any street FA we might want to sign. It isn't a significant loss by any means.

So could I. You try to tell people that with a new FO they will put their face on things. That new systems across the board will mean a huge overhaul in players.
They buy into everything thrown their way and don't seem to see it coming. This is still only the beginning of it. I don't see these players as huge losses, but as much need as we'll be having at LBer and S, it would be nice to have more answers before we had even more questions.

On offense we will have Thomas, Mack, Schwartz, Gordon, Little, and Richardson all returning for sure. Pinkston, Lauvao, Greco, Weeden, Cameron, and Benjamin are all pretty good bets to play regularly.
On defense we will have Rubin, Taylor, Jackson, Sheard, Haden, and Ward all returning for sure. Winn, Johnson, Skrine, and Hughes will also get significant playing time as well.
We will have many returning players from last season. That is not a total rebuild.
We just cut an older player who missed an entire season due to a torn achilles and a guy who was terrible. There is no reason to panic.
