Last year we went through all 7. After the first 3, it goes pretty fast cuz a lot of people drop out and it's a consensus pick.

We're trading future draft picks now? We've never done that.

I think Top just called dibs on NYJ for the 2014 draft. He just wants to be able to select first overall.

I actually did that last year. I was New England, ironically.

Yeah, it means nothing for our mocks, but when we vote on everyone's draft, we can just add a little "Jets also received a 2014 first round pick" on there

I didn't see any future year picks, or remember any players from a current roster last year. I don't expect anyone will remember what 2014 picks were traded in this years draft, when 12 months from now comes around.

So here are the thoughts on the trade as the New England GM.

The Patriots offense relies heavily on between the numbers combo routes and everyone playing them knows it. It's been getting more crowded in there over the past few years and they've been sorely lacking that outside deep threat since Randy Moss lost his speed / left.

With Tavon Austin and his 4.34 40 they'll keep safeties on notice. They'll also be able to run Austin in those combo routes a la Welker when they want to let Amendola run outside or if Amendola ever gets hurt.

I think the window is in sight now with Brady. The next few years are going to be key...kind of like the Lakers and Kobe. It's time to win now. Today.

And the Patriots just found the most dynamic offensive threat in the draft.

I just went back and looked. I tried to do it last year, but it failed.

Like I said, we should just make a note on the draft grades poll (New England forfeits 2014 first round pick) and (New York Jets receiver NE 2014 first round pick)

Pretty simple, I'd think.

I agree. I think that's a feather in the cap to go with the players taken at 29 and 91.

You're right. You can't grade a draft until 3 years, anyway!

The Browns are just two more picks away in this draft, and there are still at least 3 fine players I'd be happy to see them add after a trade down to this point.

The Browns are only one pick away and anyone who is interested in trading up PM me!!

I'm also open to suggestions on who to select with my pick. I have someone in my mind, but I figured since I represent the Browns maybe it would be nice to get others' opinions!

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I think we have Mangini running this pick....

The rationale of Cooper over Warmack is that Cooper is way more athletic and would fit the zone blocking scheme better than a mauler.

****TRADE****

The Steelers and The Raiders have agreed to a trade

Steelers receive LB Rolando McClain (he MOCK restructures taking most of his 2013 money as a 2014 roster bonus......if he works out the Steelers restructure and tear up his current deal and sign him long term before 2014 season starts)

Raiders receive a conditional 2014 pick. 7th rounder if McClain makes the opening day roster that can be a 5th if he starts 8 games next year.

Let me get this right.

1. A player who really has no value in this 2013 draft.
2. For a conditional pick for a 2014 draft which has nothing to do with this draft...

Wait...I'm looking to trade my 2014 pick for somebodies 2015 pick n 2016 pick...

lol

On a serious note, why are we trading futures.. No one will probably be picking the same teams next year but a few of us. who will remember these trade/ picks next year. we should just settle on the original notion that future picks are not allowed, they have no relevance to today.

That being said I am still looking to trade my pick and trade down

McClain had value to me in 2013 because now I don't have to take an ILB early if I don't want to.

I can go with Timmons, Foote, and McClain...see how things unfold.

We discussed a late 2013 pick...but honestly...Everyone knows McClain will be cut....because of his salary and the Raiders simply don't want him.....I made the trade to guarantee he is on my roster vs a potential FA bidding war....and the Raiders actually receive something...for which in the real world they will get nothing,

I see it as more for GRADING the 2013.....Like...wow...so and so has these drafted players..and extra picks in 2014....Does no good to hold a person to the 2014 draft picks...when he won't even have the players he traded to draft.

This.

I'm not planning on actually using that pick. But when we discuss who had good drafts, we can consider that I made a move to pick up a future 1st

Clevesteve got all tampon-like on me and didn't include my reasoning behind the Lane Johnson pick at LT #5 overall.

Per my PM:
Quote:

Explanation: Just wanted to make sure- even though I'm out at 3:00pm tomorrow, I had a prospect ranking of who to take at #5 overall. If all three of the OT's are gone, I probably try to trade out. I don't watch too much film on these guys, so I hate the idea of maybe over-reacting and reaching on Lane Johnson, but I think he's the last guy capable of plugging and playing at LT in this draft. I don't buy Reiff as a possibility on the left side with his arm-length and there's even been talk of him moving to guard (Which I am speculating as smoke given they already struggle- like the Browns- with a lack of push in the run game along the interior. A converted TE to tackle is not going to blow DTs off the ball). I say they have him put on 10 lbs. if he can and man the right side at tackle.

1.) Eric Fisher- OT Central Michigan
2.) Luke Joeckyl- OT Texas A&M
3.) Lane Johnson- OT Oklahoma
4.) Ziggy Ansah- DE BYU
5.) Dee Milliner- DB Alabama

I'm not 100% sure myself, is Lane Johnson at #5 a reach? I mean I like Ansah's upside better for the value of the pick, but how could Detroit trot out any 2nd/beyond rounder at LT after Backus retired, Reiff gets his feet wet (no more Cherilus) at RT (a big leap I'm making but I don't see how a team struggling with push in the interior run game starts a former TE inside)?

I don't really think it's a reach (Johnson isn't far behind Kalil last year), although it's not what I would have done.

I'm in the minority who thinks that Reiff can play LT, and that offensive tackles drafted as high as him should be given a shot at LT no matter what.

But still, Johnson isn't a bad pick based on talent level IMO.

It's about whether the teams might actually make a trade. If the trade can be worked out, the team receiving the player could adjust their draft strategy accordingly.

We could keep trades from occurring, but we know that isn't realistic.

You know this is a MOCK draft, right? The actual conditions of next years draft WILL be completely different than what we make of them in this year's draft.
