Ok, seriously, anyone here born with any extra digits? My son has an extra pinky toe on his right foot. The doctors tell us it is fairly common and usually hereditary, but we cannot find any relatives who have had the same thing.

Anyway, we were told we had to wait until he was at least 2 years old to remove it if we decided to do so (since he would have to be put under general anesthesia). He is almost 2-1/2 now. We have an appointment for the end of next month for the procedure.

We would have preferred to keep the toe, but we already seem to be encountering issues with shoes causing him discomfort. The idea of him having six toes doesn't bother us, but we don't want it causing him discomfort. Social issues etc. do not bother us.

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone here had encountered anything like this and how the dealt with it.

They may not bother you, but you won't be the one in the boys lockerroom on a daily basis.. he will. And I know we think we've cleansed all of the mean bullying out of kids but .... shhhh... we haven't. So I think you are doing the right thing by having it removed.

And when doctors say "fairly common" that can mean 1 in 10,000.......

As for it being hereditary, ask you mailman to remove his shoes...

Well as long as he doesn't kill any swordmakers using a sword that he made for him, with his son watching ... he shouldn't have any problems.

There's a really bad joke here ..... but probably not appropriate for the boards. lol

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Don't be. What you are doing for you child is very good. Like someone said, there are still kids out there that bully others because of a difference. (physical or perceived difference) It is sad to say that but it's a strange fact of the way we are. (jmo)

Ya know, I know somebody that has extra toes, but I can't remember who it was. I mean think it was my brother-in-law, but Im not sure. It was really so insignificant, that I didn't really think much of it. I remember who ever it was, you would never know, unless they told ya, or you really looked for it. You sure couldn't tell by the way they walked.
Probably a good idea too get it done, especially if wearing shoes are a problem.

I will tell you, kids will be rude. Having a completely natural body, I took some rude remarks in the lockeroom, when I was a youngster. It did bother me, and probably effected my confidence with that part of my body, but everybody goes through something or other, while growing up. It's life, and thats just the way it is sometimes. I think you and your wifes attitude is very mature, and appropriate, IMO, for what its worth.

A little side note regarding toes with a girl I dated...

Her index finger toe and middle toe on both feet are connected up to the tip with skin. It runs in her family. She was always very self-conscious about it.

I am actually more interested in people's experiences with the surgery, etc. The social thing doesn't bother us much because first, I think it is all in how you deal with it (I knew a kid in grade school who was born a finger short on each hand - think Bart Simpson - and he had a great attitude about it, it made him unique and he never was teased about it), and second, it really is something you would never notice unless you were looking for it (people at the daycare who have put shoes and socks on him don't notice until you mention it - the extra kind of hides below the other pinky). The doctor who is in our plan who does these surgeries is really cold and has no bedside manner. We have looked into switching docs, but we can't do it without leaving our network, which would cost substantially. We are most worried abiout the recovery and how bad that will be for him.

I'm sorry, but that was some funny [censored]!

I think you're referring to "webbed toes"....they're actually kinda cool looking.

I know that sounds weird, but this IS a weird question discussion.

I can't help you with the real question you ask.....but I would have it removed and wouldn't worry much about recovery.

Better to do it now while your little man is growing then wait until he is a teen and he wants it removed because he can't run.

AHHHHH now webbed toes are awsome. I have some of those myself. The only problem with them is you can't wear toe socks if those suckers ever come back into style

I went to elementary school with a girl who had an extra little finger on each hand. The kids weren't nice to her....of course, fingers are more "out there" for everyone to see.

I believe I would have the toe removed simply for the fact of shoe fitting issues. Good luck with your little guy...hope it goes well for him.

I agree. I think it is being somewhat naive to think it wouldn't cause issues at some point in the kids life.

I'd suggest not doing anything. Let it be. Well, unless its going to cause shoe fitting problems and make him deal with pain. Other than that, there's no reason to have a doctor slice you open if you don't have to.

Its a "deformity" but on the foot. Nobody will ever see or care. And the bullys in the lockerroom will pick on anyone for any reason.....even without a reason.
