Rau awarded to Browns from waivers

The Browns were awarded linebacker Ryan Rau, after he was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Linebacker Ryan Rau has been awarded to the Cleveland Browns via waivers, after the first-year professional was released by the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Rau made three tackles in four games last season.

The Eagles signed Rau as an undrafted free agent from Portland State in 2012, and the Folsom, Calif., native spent the first 13 weeks of the season on their practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster on Dec. 8, 2012.

During his college career, Rau played in a school-record 43 games, and led Portland State in tackles in each of his final three seasons. He tallied 287 career tackles, and as a season in 2011, Rau registered a career-best 89 stops, as well as three sacks, and also forced a fumble. As a junior in 2010, Rau made 83 total tackles.

Might be the elusive missing piece that kicks our D into "Elite" status.

Also might not be.

Okay ... won't be.

Sure sounds like a downgrade from, EVERYBODY! ( I was gonna say Maiava, but clearly everybody)

Its funny how some of you all thinks that "every" signing is suppose to be a impact player. Guys are signed all over the league from ST players to depth all the way to warm practice bodies. YES you do wish they panned into something special but there contracts always tell the story.

a upgrade over Emmanuel Acho. can only fix so many things that the last FO left on the team in one half a offseason.

He was only in the games on special teams coverage.

3 tackles in 4 games isn't that bad when you're relegated to that role. If you project that to a 16-game season, you'll get numbers that are above the league average for special teams tackles.

We trade them one, we take one of their throwaways. We already have Robinson at 6'1 229 and now we have another very small linebacker. Won't knock the player because I can't recall seeing him play. Probably end up strictly on special teams like Robinson. If they make the team at all....

People here are knocking guys like this but each one of them can say "I had an NFL career." and I'm rather certain that there isn't a single person here that can make that claim.

Replaces Acho on our depth chart. Just a kid who can play football not a great physical presence - I'll tell you one thing. Defense so much is predicated on HEART...who knows what this kids heart is. Possibly he can step up to be on of those amazing Special Team Players??? 6'1" 230 - who cares. Right now the best "LB" not talking pass rushers in 3-4 but best LB in the pure sense of what we grew up w/LB. Is Keuchely of the Panthers n he's 235. More than any other position it is so much heart n instincts to play the game of football. So who knows where this kid is heading to. He'll probably start around 8-10 on the depth chart. I hope the kid catches on as a ST extraordinaire. Still important to the team.

JMHO

Not to be argumentative, but some of the people on our roster (I won't go so far as to call them players, per se), should not be saying they had NFL careers either. We have had us some awful.

How is being honest about the kids physical size "knocking" him?

And EO, I agree that size isn't as important as some make out. If it were up to me we would have two OLB's 240-250 with speed....and would often play off the ball. As line BACKERS... If that's what's happening here I would welcome breaking out of the modern definition of the 3-4. I was simply pointing out that we now have two sub 240 linebackers on the roster while switching to a 3-4. In a 4-3 they don't stick out as much. I DO think they will have real problems playing inside.... but we shall see. Until we see this team play I'm not carping too loudly about any of these moves. I may scratch my head about this or that however......

Eddie "the assassin" Johnson was considered small for an ILB but I loved that guy.... so yeah it's more about heart, but in todays' NFL it is unusual. Peace

I wasn't specifically responding to you, but used your post as the impetus for mine.

Rau's detractors saying that he's only had 3 tackles in 4 games.

That's all I was saying. It sounded rich coming from posters who can only get into the stadium by buying a ticket.

To be fair, I guess the same could be said of me and my take on players like Weeden and Cribbs.

Fodder that might end up being a gem.... won't know until the dust settles and the season is about to start. Many players are found this way. Does NOT COST US ANYTHING to try this guy out. If we can improve with little moves so be it. Having camp competition wont hurt. Perhaps Lau comes in and is an 8th linebacker (for example) and we keep 7. The guys that are 6 and 7 may try harder knowing that Lau could have made the roster ahead of them so they want to keep their spot. I don;t seem harm in trying it out

Lofa Tatupu was similar size as this guy and he was solid. Sam Mills too. Not saying Lau is either one of these guys (tho Mills wasn't drafted either). Who knows.

I suggest we all calm down about these little moves, don't get worked up. There is enough chances to raise our blood pressures come the draft and even during the season.

I remember when Lofa became a free agent. I really wanted him. Another undersized body, oversized heart ordeals and a solid player.

We'll see. The more people in camp, the more options we have to find a good fit.

Maybe this guy could be an indication as to what we can expect 'size wise" from our ILBers?

Spirit I'm more real than most give me credit for...yes I am a self proclaimed Homer. Still I stated that this addition is probably starting out 8-10 on our depth charts n if he works hard can make it to the 53 roster via Special Teams. We need that Constanza guy...who would only play if there was injuries but was a Mad Man on ST.

3-4...I see the inside being DQ n JMJ at the start. Do we draft an Ansah or Jordan??? Can Sheard slide Inside???

Many options available to us at LB - we won't use #6 for an ILB whoever (LB/DE) type we get will be to man the ROLB position. If we don't trade Sheard for a 1st round pick at that point...Then I think he would transition ILB.

230LB...They can slowly gain weight without losing speed or quickness cause their body can hold it naturally. Or they can go the opposite direction. Lose 5-10 pounds gain a little speed n become a SS???

But a kid of this magnitude. We don't make moves like this EXPECTING him to step up n become a starter. I mean if it happens - GREAT! but we bring guys like this in to PUSH the competition work hard n the expectation is if he makes the 53 man roster it is to Bolster up our Special Teams...53 n Coaches wish it was more. But 22 are starters for O n D...maybe 20 for Rotational or specialists situational players which still leaves 8 guys who have to become INSANE MAD MEN For Special Teams! 53 for a team!

JMHO - we'll see if this kid can make it from the 80 camp guys to the final 53 that is what he is striving for!
