all reports that I have seen have said there were no ball bearings or anything they believe were embedded in the bomb. the flying debri seems to indicate that it was in a metal box (mailbox, etc.). here's one such report that also gives a more current update on the chase:

This is the biggest problem with "instant news" is that things get reported early that are false, and it just keeps getting perpetuated as fact. I read a website earlier that had a nice organized bullet point list of facts ... one of those mentioned was that Verizon and Sprint said that they were never asked to disable cell-phone service to the area. Yet I still hear people reporting that they turned off cell service so people couldn't set off any more bombs. Last night, they had confirmed that the JFK Library incident was merely a fire that wasn't related to the bombs ... yet people were calling that an explosion for quite awhile.

I see that it's also been confirmed by law enforcement that there were no other bombs found and "disarmed" ... despite lots of media reporting that there were several bombs being found around the area last night.

yes, I hate this era of "first to report" news. one of these agencies is going to figure out that if they are always "correct" that they'll garner quite a large segment of people to their website.
if everyone is "first," then people will still flock to the one that is "correct" always good to do things a bit different.

The rush to be the first to report has been around forever. I think with the internet and social media, we can get those reports faster, which means more errors. Maybe that's why it seems like it's worse now than before.
I always laugh at the news agencies or reporters flaunting the "you heard it here first". Like I care who tells me, nor do I remember. Nobody gets points for telling me 12 seconds or 12 minutes before someone else reports it. The report doesn't change the event.

A lot of the reports about other devices that didn't go off came from things people heard across scanners.
Watching the coverage last night, I heard someone who was involved with law enforcement say that the protocol for dealing with a situation involving bombs, is that you don't talk about it over radio. You go to the hard line. I have no idea about any of that, but it sounds logical.

I really wish we'd go back to the day when first to report ALSO meant Accurately
We need a whole bunch of Walter Cronkites, Huntley/Brinkleys and Edward R. Morrows to replace what is laughing called reporters today.

It sure is, but not with men and women of integrity in journalism.
They pretty much would rather get it right then get it first. Ideally, they want to be the first and be right.

Someone here may be able to offer you a better description, because I don't follow him.
Basically, he's a guy on twitter who had some association with a radio station in NY, I'm not sure if he was a caller or whatever, but he tries breaking news, and he does it at maybe a rate slightly higher than 50/50. Even if he's at 80%, that doesn't make him any good. A real reporter does not break news unless it's completely certain. Adam Schefter is a prime example. He will deal with rumors, but he won't confirm things until he knows they are 100%, he's not one of these guys first on he scene, but I usually don't take football news seriously until he confirms it.
He had Lebron in NYC a few days before he left for Miami. He had Chip Kelly to Cleveland. He had Grimes to Cleveland done. These are just Cleveland related instances.
I've also heard that he fixes his tweets so he can backtrack (saying something is 95% done)
I don't follow him, I don't consider him credible. I think he just follows every beat reporter for every team in sports, searches twitter and the internet, and just plays the odds.
He also searches his own name on twitter and retweets people. He did that to me. I was making fun of him for Chip Kelly when he reported it was done, I said, without linking his twitter account, that since he reported it, it's probalby not happening. He retweeted me, and then 2 days later we all found out Chip Kelly was going back to Oregon (only to end up in Philly a week later) He then removed the RT once that all went down.
He's small time.

Yes, we do wonder why Twitter isn't allowed on here.
And not because of clowns like that guy, but because of verified news outlets that use Twitter to spread news.
Twitter verifies accounts. Allowing VERIFIED accounts would allow only credible information.
It's not a difficult concept, really.

There is a lot of garbage on twitter, but there are also very credible resources. I think Twitter does a great job of verifying accounts too.
I don't mind reading stuff that turns out to not be true. It makes for fun talk. My life wasn't ruined because for a few hours I thought Chip Kelly was the coach of my football team.
Mort is also a good follow, Adam Caplan. Jay Glazer is a ridiculously good follow.
Basically people who's articles are allowed on here all have Twitter accounts that get you the stories directly.

Here's what it boils down to, IMO. The American people want honesty, but they don't really want honesty. They want sensationalism.
If the American people truly wanted honesty, they wouldn't stay glued to their computers and TVs and radios for the sensational stories that come out. They wouldn't buy into the lies and crap spewed from the "news" outlets.
The American people get just what they want.
It's like all the people who complain about awful shows like the Bachelor, etc. If everyone is so up in arms about the crappy quality of TV, then why are there so many shows like that? Because a lot of people watch them.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

And how do the mods on DT determine if it is a verified account ot not? Remember these people are volunteers doing this in thier spare time. They are busy enough, without having to verify if a twitter account reference is "credible".

It takes 2 seconds to click a link and see the little blue patch on the Twitter page.
I understand they are volunteers, but it's just like everything else on this board.
Do they click every link to a news article posted? Probably not.
It's as simple as, "It's a rule, most people will follow it" and the mods will know which posters are the ones likely to break those rules, those are the ones that'll be checked.

It would be easy for the rest of the posters to help police it as well. Someone see's a link that isn't verified then the post can be reported or a post can be made announcing it as an unverified source giving the poster a chance to edit or delete their post.

networks love shows like the Bachelor. they get a ton of ratings from all the women watching + another whole set of ratings from whatever the men are watching that night.
as if it's a coincidence that they lineup that show with MNF in the fall (Disney owns both ABC & ESPN).

Then you still have any quoted tweets still being there though. My guess is that until there is a way to automatically check for a verified account via the twitter API to see if the source is verified, it's going to be a non-starter. To my knowledge this is not possible at all, not to mention syncing it with the version of UBB that this board uses (it's a full version behind, and the update was a pretty major one if i'm not mistaken).
On top of that, faking the appearance of a verified twitter account would be easy, just add the badge to your header image in the correct place, and at first glance you would look verified.

The question I have is this, these verified accounts, If I post something from a verified account, would the refs on here be able to tell or would they have to go to twitter for each post and check the accounts to see if it's verified?

People want that and the News delivers. They really did not need to repeatedly show the blood and gore over and over again on CNN last night. Every single story does not need to have mentions of amputations and legs blown off. Every time they glorify the violence it just encourages other people to do it.

They could compile a list of credible NFL twitter accounts. Unless one of us was writing our own stuff and then making it look like Schefter did it, it would be fine. To be honest, I could write up a fake article and make it look like Tony Grossi did it, and link the real article, and if you didn't go and check yourself, you'd never know. Same deal.
I would even be willing to help, although I don't think they're interested. I'm sure they're tired of hearing about it, and it is their forum, but I just think they are missing out.

That's a pretty good argument.
I was anti twitter but not anymore, I definitely think it's time to loosen the reigns. This has to be the only message board left that outlaws it.

Ted Turner
There is no such thing as broadcast journalism as it was in the day.
I remember hearing that the amount of time devoted to let people or politicians or whoever talk went from something like a couple of minutes to 30 seconds or less.
"What do you think Jane?" "I don't know Bob it just seems like the world is a different place, What do you think Nancy?" "Well here on the streets the common person has no frickin' idea what we're talking about Jane!" "Sad. This is Jane and Bob with their make-up and hair saying, watch tomorrow for more of our lame-ass explanations of stuff we know nothing about. Goodnight Bob" "Hahaha! Goodnight Jane and goodnight to anybody willing to watch this drivel"
