You might as well bring in a vet kicker nearing the end for a year because no matter what the guy is going to fail in the eyes of the fans.
Why draft a good young kicker to ruin him? Let Grahm take the heat this year, then find your kicker of the future.

I don't think the plan was to bring in Graham. He just happened to be there. If the move away from Dawson was a reason of ours, then it would be money, not so much age. We had to franchise him the last two years. I can't remember what he was paid, but I am sure he wouldn't take less than that to stay here. It was a three headed monster that lead to Dawson leaving. His desire to play for a winner, what he made and the fact he doesn't have that many more years left.
Bingo...NEXT!!!

Dawson wants to end career with Browns
6/5/12
BEREA, Ohio -- Phil Dawson spent his entire offseason away from the Cleveland Browns after being given the franchise tag for a second straight year.
So, it came as a surprise when the kicker said he wants to end his career with the Browns.
"You know what, I’d like to. I really would," Dawson said after the first day of mandatory minicamp. "I’m not thinking about my career being over at this point, but it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to go play somewhere else. So, we’ll see what happens. I’ve told you guys before I’m not very good at predicting the future, but I’m just going to go to work like I always do and hope that things get worked out.”
Dawson, 37, had previously expressed a desire to play closer to his family in Texas. But he seems committed to finishing up with the Browns.
When asked about if he thought about Lou Groza's all-time franchise points record, Dawson blurted out it would take two and a half years before the reporter was done asking the question. Dawson is 194 points behind Groza.
“That was a goal I set in 1999 when Danny Kight and Chris Boniol were out here competing against me in training camp," Dawson said. "If I would had admitted back then that, that was one of my goals you guys would have laughed me out of town and I wouldn’t have blamed you. So a lot of work, a lot of years and a lot of effort has taken place since then. To even be remotely on the horizon close to that is a pretty neat thing.”
web page
Hopefully we can put this claim that Dawson didn't want to be in Cleveland...to rest.
It sure seems like Phil wanted to stay in Cleveland...he said so prior to 2012 season and he was getting close to Groza's record...Phil Dawson responded with his best season ever and was named to the Pro Bowl.
I still contend that Banner was utilizing his standard of not signing 30 something free agents, even if they are your own players, even if they are performing among the best in the NFL.
It was going to cost the Browns a little "cash" to resign Dawson and Banner was more interested in pinching pennies than giving the Browns the best chance to win by resigning Dawson.
Keep in mind, Banner does not view players from the perspective of a football player or coach or a CEO with a background on the football side of a franchise....
...Banner views players from a business perspective because that is how he was educated and it was his expertise in Philly. Banner was one of the best "bean counters" in the NFL....
I fully expect the Browns to use one of their draft picks to draft a kicker and keep Graham around as an insurance policy, should the rookie not pan out.

32...I could certainly understand the pinching pennies if the Browns were up against the cap...
...but the Browns are not up against the cap and by next season, the Browns must spend 89% of the cap. I'm not sure exactly what percentage of the cap the Browns have spent at this time, but without a doubt, signing Dawson to a contract such as he signed in San Fran was not about to put the Browns in cap hell.
It is simply an example of the "#1 priority" of the Browns new management team and a byproduct of the Browns being run by a "bean counter" whose priority is not signing the best players to help the team win...but making sure the franchise fills the kicking position with the cheapest option (under 30) available...JMHO

I read your article the first time you posted it. Did you forget you had already posted?
As I said to someone else....I don't care what some article from last June says. Of course he says he wanted to stay, but he wasn't willing to sign a contract with the Browns and forced Holmgren to franchise him.
The reality is Phil was ready for greener pastures 2 years ago.

Its very rare to hear a player trashing their team demanding trades and saying they want out in preseason camp. That article is exactly what a PC player would say.

Since Graham is such a long term veteran, I wonder what the minimum cost was to sign him?
I doubt it was dirt cheap actually......

J/C....Did Banner ever acknowledge or even hint that he offered Dawson a contract?
The media was pretty insistent that Banner didn't want to keep him. All of the reports I saw painted it that way, and this was not a popular move with the fans. If Banner had made a serious offer or attempt, I think he would have shot down those reports and gone out of his way to let the fans know he tried.
He had a lot of time and plenty of conferences to drop a hint. Even if that's not his style, he could have used a "source" to "leak" word to the fans that he was trying or that he tried. Mary Kay or Schefter would have gladly eaten it up and it would have made the FO look a lot better in the fans eyes without making Dawson look bad at all.

I don't think the FO is the least bit concerned with looking good in the fans eyes. Instead, I think the FO is concerned with winning. Now, letting Dawson go seems to all of us as a step in the wrong direction, but if that's the FO's decision on him or other players they're certainly not going to run it by us first.
Most of us will buy into the way the FO operates if we are winning. They can do every stupid thing in the book, but if we're winning it's all good.

I think there has to be some concern for the fans' opinion. They don't have to run anything by us, or take into account our opinion. But Dawson is a rare one for this franchise. If they gave Phil the offer that the fans wanted, it would be wise for them to clue us in on that. Even if it was just a leak to Grossi or Mary Kay.
To your point, agreed, winning is the bottom line. That is how they will be judged. On that note, if we should lose a few games on the leg of the kicker? Those losses will fall even harder on them, as the popular perception stands that they didn't want Dawson.

Not that I know of. The fact is we probably didn't. I have covered that. We were paying him at the franchise rate the last two years. We weren't going to insult Phil by offering him less and decided we didn't want to pay more.
Why make Phil a offer and put him in a position to turn us down?
The time had come. Why is it so hard for people to understand there is a really, really good chance Phil wanted a shot at a ring. Most players do. Why would he be any different?

Please don't take this as an insult...as opposed to just what articles of proof that he wanted to leave. We just have mind readers.
I say this cause I too at first believed Dawson wished to leave - ASSumptions from facts out there. Then I found out the FACTS - not from an article but from somebody I trust - not a rumor but one of knowledge. Then with the same facts understood what was going on with Dawson.
Franchised 2011 n 2012...Dawson wanted to spend the rest of his career here n was looking for a 5 n then 4 year long term contract which was refused to be given to him. 2013 it was impossible to Franchise him pretty much n Dawson was not looking for that 3 year contract...since 2011 his plan was to play his career with the Browns with him looking to retire after the 2015 season n move full time with his family as his eldest gets into his school playing days. Dawson would be 41/42???
It was not us giving him Long Term Contracts n he would refuse. It was the opposite.
Again I'm a Heckert Fan but I blame him a little more than Banner for not having Dawson here.
I got no proof...Believe what you want. I trust the info that I got. I understand if you all do not. But I am not doing some Agenda thing - I actually had a similar ASSumption as most do but changed it not to appease Mac but changed it when somebody in the know Advised me of what went on.

let's suppose the above is true (i have heard similar, so I wouldn't be surprised)
if true, then how much of those contracts did he want guaranteed? signing a 5yr or a 4yr deal w/ guarantees to a late-30's kicker is a risky proposition. he ended up having 2 of his best years, kudos to him, but kickers tend to lose distance as they get older (and once they lose their leg, it goes downhill quickly).
i simply cannot blame a FO for not signing an older kicker to that long of a deal as much as I like Dawson.

Of course it was about contract length. We had that chance 3 years ago.
At this point I wouldn't have signed him to anything over a year at a time, so this bashing of Banner, Lombardi, and Haslam is rubbish.

If you're afraid of guaranteeing a guy's salary, franchising him twice isn't exactly the way to go...
I would find it very difficult to believe that he was seeking a contract with multiple guaranteed years. Partially because I think he would recognize that he's in his mid to late 30s and its unreasonable for a player of his age to expect that sort of deal, and partially because, being a vested veteran, his salary is guaranteed anyway for any season in which he's on the roster for game one.
Anyway, this thread is about Shayne Graham, not Phil Dawson. I'm going to be very concerned if we go into the season with Graham as our kicker, because he was unable to find a stable gig after leaving Cincy until last season. Last season he had one of the league's worst field goal percentages, missed 55% of his tries from 50+, and had the benefit of playing most of the season in nice weather and/or domes (all seven of his misses were in domed stadiums (five at home, one in Indy, one in Detroit).

Because winning games should trump fear of rejection. I have no idea what actually happened, but Banner wasn't worried about getting turned down by Phil Dawson's agent. And Dawson would have preferred to have seen some offer from us, even if it didn't have a Harbaugh attached.
And its not hard to understand that Phil might want to leave for a contender. I understand that. Everyone understands that. But its also easy to understand that Phil might have wanted more money and years than San Fran offered. As you say, Most players do. Why would he be any different?
I'll save the know-it-alls a post..."He's gone, Its time to drop it." Good luck Shayne, I hope you have a better year than Phil did!

yes, actually it is. it's a 1 year guaranteed salary. if you know he's your kicker for next year, but don't want to commit to an older player any longer, then it's the perfect thing to do.

I give the odds that Dawson was looking for some five-year fully guaranteed deal a 0% chance.

you only look 1 season ahead. if you knew for sure he was going to still be good and healthy the next offseason, then, yes, you'd be willing to sign 2 years of guarantees.

I wholeheartedly believe that it was Heckert's intention from the get-go to tag Dawson in back-to-back years. If he wanted to sign Dawson to a long-term deal he would've taken care of it before his prior to the expiration of his deal at the end of the 2010 season. That Dawson sold his house following the season indicates, to me at least, that the team made little to no good-faith effort to work out an extension and that he expected to be gone. Likewise with failing to reach a multi-year deal during the period allowable for negotiating with franchise players during the 2011 season, Dawson's first tagged year.
I believe that Heckert figured that he could force him to stick around with a pair of one-year guaranteed deals, and that while Dawson wouldn't be totally happy at not having a multi-year deal, he'd be making a significant amount more than he had been and that would placate him somewhat. I think he expected a 36-37-year-old Dawson's production to fall off over that two-year period so that the decision would be made for him and he wouldn't look like the bad guy when he didn't bring Dawson back for 2013.
What I don't think he counted on was Dawson being the NFL's best kicker and having a personal best season, nor did he count on being relieved of his duties. And I'm concerned that his approach has now left us without a kicker who knows how to kick successfully in Cleveland Browns Stadium, err, First Energy, and it may be a while before we find one that can solve that puzzle the way that Dawson was able to.

I'm not a trusting soul of this FO but I do think people need to look at the facts here. The previous FO only signed Dawson for 1 year at a time as well. The only way they could even get away with it was with the franchise tag.
I wanted Dawson here. But in all honestly, this FO didn't have the option of another one year franchise tag and neither FO would sign him to the long term deal.
So while I would like to see him still here, the previous FO is just as much to blame on this deal as this one. So if anyone truly wishes to cast stones, they need to divide them evenly between both regimes IMO.

My feeling is we didn't want to put Phil in to a position to turn us down, out of respect for him.
What if we made the best offer and he turned us down?
Phil is a pretty senseable guy and not all that much in to the bling as far as I can tell. He didn't make mega-bucks like some other positions, but I'd bet he has homes paid for, a nice retirement account and doesn't have to worry about money the rest of his life unless events not worthy of this forum make his money worthless.
So, I take it back....he wants some bling, as in a big fat Super Bowl Ring.
It wasn't going to happen for him in Cleveland with the time remaining in his career.

Hey bro I have no problem with the Browns making the choice to move on no matter how much I love Phil and his family. HOWEVER I really do believe Graham will be the most hated person on the team this year and the Browns did it on purpose, figuring he would take the heat off his replacement. From Phil's point-of-view? I think he would appreciate that.
I've quit jobs and had them beg me not to leave. Offered me more money, asked me what they could do and told me I was welcome back at any time. I had to turn them down, but I really appreciated the gesture and it made me feel better about all of the work I had put in. .
On the other hand, I quit a job after 6 years and my manager didn't blink an eye. My boss was too proud to act like she cared. "Everyone's replaceable." Screw that.

I believe Browns fans, as well as the sports media in Cleveland will be able to figure out "who was responsible" for kicking Phil Dawson out of Cleveland...it wasn't Shayne Graham.
Like I said earlier, I believe the Browns will draft a kicker with a late round pick...the cheapest option.
Haslam might need the money to lawyer fees...

All of Banner's subordinates are under contracts that regularly expire. Not the typical turnover/tenure setup. Every subordinate is in this situation every 1-5 years.
If one of your best employees' contract was expiring, and you wanted to keep him, I don't think it shows respect to him (or morale for the rest of the workforce) to let him leave without making him some type of offer. I think its the opposite. An offer shows respect, and a commitment to the other guys...whose contracts will also be up soon.
And Phil's agent would be very glad to go to the 49ers with an offer from The Browns. The more offers the better for their side of negotiation, especially when the 49ers offer a pay cut. Agents want to drive up demand for their player, not the opposite. Phil doesn't want widespread speculation that his team of 10+ years with $40 million in cap room doesn't want to retain him. Even if Phil had no interest in staying, his agent wouldn't reveal that to Banner. They would play it for all they could. Losers or not, his time here and our cap space make us top competition for the 49ers in the bidding war. Phil would welcome the opportunity to turn us down, not feel insulted by it.
I have no idea what really happened. I don't claim to. But if Banner wants to keep a guy, he's gotta make an offer. That's his job, and it is not disrespectful.

Like I said earlier, I believe the Browns will draft a kicker with a late round pick...the cheapest option.
it's amazing how we can come to the same answer and yet completely different conclusions on it.
I agree that the Browns want to draft a kicker (or put high priority on an UDFA). However, that is a smart, intelligent decision. Phil (and I love him and wanted him to go after Groza's record) is an older player. It is smart to grab a new kicker whom we can have for the next 10-15 years.
Shayne Graham is the backup plan IMO.
