I am actually more interested in people's experiences with the surgery, etc. The social thing doesn't bother us much because first, I think it is all in how you deal with it (I knew a kid in grade school who was born a finger short on each hand - think Bart Simpson - and he had a great attitude about it, it made him unique and he never was teased about it), and second, it really is something you would never notice unless you were looking for it (people at the daycare who have put shoes and socks on him don't notice until you mention it - the extra kind of hides below the other pinky). The doctor who is in our plan who does these surgeries is really cold and has no bedside manner. We have looked into switching docs, but we can't do it without leaving our network, which would cost substantially. We are most worried abiout the recovery and how bad that will be for him.
Jamey- our son had a surgery when he was 1. He had something called hypo-spadius, which in plain terms means his pee hole, was a slit instead of a circle. there are varying degrees of the problem, but his was barely a problem. The Urethra just splits open at the end instead of staying tubular. He couldnt be circumsized when born either. So we went to a specialist, who was alright, kinda strange if you ask me, but sometimes the ones with the worst bedside manner are really talented. What I was getting at is, Mason at 1 year old was put under, they had to open the length of his penis up to make sure the urethra was intact and re-form the end of it and circumsize him. I was terrified, as was his father. After the surgery it was AWFUL looking, and it bled and it made me want to pass out. I actually made my mom (nurse) stay at our house the first 2 nights because he had a catheter and everything for 2 weeks....... I mean, I can't tell you how awful it looked and how bad we felt for him.......... he was clueless. Its like he didnt even know anything was done to him. They gave him tylenol with Codeine and some antibiotics. Anyway, the kids usually do better than the parents! After he was all healed, he looks perfectly normal, you would never know he had a surgery like he did. Its funny you talk about insurance and network and so on........ the NFL is supposed to have great insurance and it really does, but none of the specialists that were referred to us took the insurance. So we had to go with the Dr we went with. Your son will be fine! Good luck!
