Lee Owens on Charlie Frye

By STEVE DOERSCHUK
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON TWP. They were like bacon and eggs. Lee Owens recruited Charlie Frye to the University of Akron and coached him four years.

Three autumns have passed since they were together, but Owens remains as interested as any observer in whether Frye has lost his sizzle with the Cleveland Browns.

Now the head coach at Ashland University, Owens shared some of his insider's view Monday following a speech at the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club.

Owens has watched Frye at Cleveland Browns Stadium when he could. He has been in Frye's home, where they have watched game film.

"He's frustrated,'' Owens said. "... What I see happening is, he's gone through a couple different systems."

Frye's coordinator in Owens' final year at Akron was Tom Stacy. Frye played one more year at Akron, with Head Coach J.D. Brookhart overhauling the offense. Frye has worked under three coordinators in Cleveland: Mo Carthon, Jeff Davidson and now Rod Chudzinski.

"Now it's gonna be a new system again," Owens said. "I think Charlie's working really hard at picking up the new system, but it's kinda like starting over. The checks are different, the hots are different.

"The frustrating part is not having much continuity. This is a big change for him this time."

Before the 2005 draft, Owens thought Frye would do as well as any quarterback. No one would work harder or be tougher, he said then and now.

Owens laughs about a 2002 opener in which Akron was getting hammered at Iowa. Rushers were teeing off on Frye. Everyone could see at halftime he was physically unfit to continue. But Frye demanded to go back in.

"I had to take his helmet," Owens said.

In 2002, Frye threw for 2,824 yards and completed 65.8 percent of his passes. In 2003, Frye threw for 3,549 yards and completed 64.8 percent. In 2004 under Brookhart, Frye threw for 2,623 yards and completed 63.6 percent.

In 20 NFL games, Frye has thrown for 3,456 yards and completed 62.8 percent. His record as a starter is 6-12.

It's unclear whether Frye's run as a No. 1 QB is on the ropes. The team might trade for veteran Trent Green if the Chiefs will take less than a fourth-round pick. JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn are possible draft targets, although it seems likely Russell will be gone before the Browns pick.

A fan poll posted on nfl.com posed the question: Who among Green, Quinn, Frye, Derek Anderson and "other'' should be the Browns' starting quarterback in 2007?

With 83,525 votes, "other'' was ahead of Anderson, 5 to 4 percent. Green was the choice of 41 percent, followed by Quinn at 36 and Frye at 14 percent.

What are the odds Frye will get a chance to start with an improved supporting cast?

"He feels he's the quarterback, and the team's gonna rally around him, and he's gonna lead 'em to a championship,'' Owens said. "He feels that just as strongly as he did the way he was drafted.''

'Charlie is gonna go as far as that offensive line will take him. For him to get better, for the team to get better, they have to get better up front. Their staff knows it. Their fans know it.'

I have yet to see consistent proof of that outside this board. Seems many will say it, but when given a choice will draft a shiny "new car smell" QB and do nothing with the line.

The sad part is that many of the fans don't know it. Look at all the draft posts. Running backs, quarterbacks---one poster actually suggested trading UP for Russell, wide receivers, corners.......<<sigh>>

I'm wondering if Savage "knows it." The guy worries me. We'll see.

It really is rather sad isn't it.. so few actually get it,,, yet the insistence is that we make up the best and most knowledgable fans!

Be afraid,,, Be very afraid!

Your humble opinion would be so far off base it isn't even funny. As I've said many times, I am very close to Lee Owens. He was my coach in high school and is an outstanding coach. He doesn't sugarcoat anything and can look at a player objectively. He always has and always will. If he is saying these things, then it's because it's true, not because he's biased.

I think alot of Fans DO "get it". We may just disagree with how we go about addressing it. Both you and Vers know I am a Peterson pimp (but Thomas would not upset me at all), but even being a AD guy, I realize he needs help and would push hard for OL with the 2nd pick, 3rd at the very latest. Hell, even if we pass on AD and take Thomas (whom I am getting more sure that Detriot will take) I still hope we go OG again, by the 4th pick at the latest.

I think most of the other posters on here KNOW how important the OL is, we just don't necessarily agree that Thomas HAS to be the pick, that doesn't make us less knowledgable just because we don't agree with you..........or does it .

I hope Frye gets the starting spot this season... adding Steinbach will definitely help.. and i know the Browns will draft some talent for the o-line this year.. they have to draft atleast two o-linemen.. ATLEAST!!

Im hoping that Matua/Sowells also step it up...

Yeah I know NC,,, I said many don't get it, but in truth, many do!

As for AP in the draft, honestly, if we get any of the following in the first round, I'm gonna be a happy guy. Some of these I would think the 3rd pick might be a little high, but I put them in in case we trade down for more picks: (in no particular order)

Peterson
Thomas
Branch
Okoye
Johnson
Quinn
Russell
Adams

If our first pick is one of those, I'll be happy..

But I really want to see Thomas. Long term, if he turns out to be the real deal at LT, then our line will suddenly improve,,, But that's JMO! A really good case can be made for each of those guys I mentioned...

I'm a Thomas guy...with Sears in the 2nd round. That being said, let's not forget that PS went out and signed LeCharles last year to anchor the OL. Plus he added Shaffer and Hallen at the same time. And he drafted Sowells. No one could have predicted what would happen to LCB. The fact that Hallen was a flake probably never came up in his meetings with Phil prior to signing. Schaffer did his best with a supporting cast of Andruzzi, Coleman, the revolving door at center, and a disabled Tucker and his backups. Sowells is still a question mark.

This year, Phil went out and signed the top FA guard on the market. Nothing he's done indicates that he won't be targeting OL in the draft. Rest assured, Phil gets it!! We just need to have the guys he brings us stay healthy, hungry, and ready to gel.

What you're saying is... any of the top picks would make you happy...LOL. I don't want a QB, not because I support Frye or Anderson, but because I want to address other issues first.... I think we can win with either of our present QBs ( not including Dorsey in this...), with a better supporting cast....

I do not want a shiney, new car smell (this means ROOKIE) QB......

Any of the other players on your list are fine with me....

Good read. I am sure the system changes are affecting Frye, and hopefully he gets this year, with some additional weapons and better protection, to prove himself.

What I was wondering is if Charlie had an oline deterorate in College as well.

Dude if you're bringing up Charlies Oline which he had for 4 years and his completion percentage never went up but down..kinda tells me it's more than the oline..
It's not a slamming response but your response could have been taken that way.
If the Oline didn't regress why did his percentage never go up?

You start winning by putting a system in place and STICKING with that system. You have to draft guys that fit that system (and sign key free agents) then give the players time to learn the system. There are no quick fixes.

It takes a vet player time to learn a new system. A young guy forced to learn three new systems in three years has to leave not only his head spinning, but also everybody's elses.

Yeah,I see a trend. Throughout his entire career,he's always held season averages over 60%. Yet fans scream about his poor accuracy. Sounds like a pretty crappy trend too.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Give that man a Cigar!

SOMEONE was desperate for something to write, so they dipped into the BIASED-BIN and pulled out Owens.

Stevie, with the draft coming up in which the Browns pick THIRD, THIS is the best story you could come up with? In case you haven't noticed it, Savage is looking at QB's..................

I don't think there were any big changes in the system when we switched from Mo to Davidson. The play calling may have changes, but i don't think anything really changed.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

There are tons of players in the NFL that don't have the skill sets of great players, yet they out preform others who have better skill sets. Why??? because they have the right attitude, and the willingness to put in the hard work to improve any way they can. They also have heart. Other than Charlies arm strength I see nothing in him that can't be learned or improved upon.

Thats also relative..because he can improve on some things not related to arm strength and yet that improvement might not be enough.

He fumbles a lot..and thats in part due to having small hands..it's a fact that can't be dispelled like a LT's arm length..lol..
He has to learn to look off defenders..
he has to learn not to throw off the back foot..step into the throw..
He has to also sense the pressure and not roll into it.
My biggest gripe..on timing patterns his throws are a second off(or he throws it to the wrong shoulder)..which means they're behind the reciever..causing him to turn back for the ball..

Yea, I'm pretty sure that it was mentioned last year that the terminology and playbook would essentially remain the same.

My hope is that Chuds offense will be tailored to his players skill sets. Frye would be alot better if they use him the way Denver used to use Plummer...alot of PA and rollouts. Frye is alot better when he's rolling out of the pocket. JMHO

I just pray that Phil has enough sense to take Thomas...its way past due to fix the OL..we cant evaluate any skill players until we have a decent OL.

Think back to '02, our line wasnt great, but it was at least average...voila playoffs.

Yet the other improvements might be enough.

Look at his fumbles again. Carson Palmer and others fumbled more often than Frye. However he will always have to be more carefull about fumbles due to his hand size. Protect him with a good line, and get a running game going, and watch his fumbles get cut in half

Agreed 100 percent.

Quote:

Yes he does, and without time to throw and room to do so he has not been able to learn that yet. (If he ever does)

Quote:

The last two years he would have to roll backwards at full speed to avoid it.

Which can be learned.

He also has to learn to read a defense pre snap, and during the play.
