*Edit* Had to edit the title. I thought it said performance enhancing drugs the first time I skimmed the article.

Justin Blackmon suspended four games by NFL for substance abuse - CBSSports.com
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on...ur-games-by-nfl

Less than 72 hours after the Jaguars wrapped up an impressive 2013 NFL Draft, they received some bad news with their top 2012 NFL Draft pick Justin Blackmon who was suspended by the league for four games.

The NFL announced the suspension on Tuesday afternoon noting that Blackmon was "suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2013 NFL season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse."

"I've made a mistake and I have no excuse. I am truly sorry and disappointed in myself for putting the Jaguars in this situation," Blackmon said in a statement. "I look forward to putting this behind me and maturing and growing as a person."

Blackmon will be eligible to return on Sept. 30, according to the league. Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the news.

Losing Blackmon for a quarter of the season is obviously a pretty huge blow to Jacksonville and to quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

"Coach Bradley and I have spoken with Justin, and he is well aware of our disappointment," GM Dave Caldwell said in a statement. "I don't think there is any question that Justin is embarrassed and remorseful."

The good news for the Jaguars? They decided to add a pair of explosive playmakers in the draft in the form of Denard Robinson and Ace Sanders. They also have Cecil Shorts, a talented but still unproven wideout.

Blackmon's absence will be felt though.

The one good piece of news from a schedule viewpoint is that Blackmon will miss just one AFC South game. Jacksonville opens with the Chiefs, then plays the Raiders, then travels to Seattle to play the Seahawks before returning home to play the Colts.

The bad news is those games, with the exception of Seattle, are probably winnable. That becomes much less true without Jacksonville's No. 1 receiving option.

yeah although never a fan of early investments with WR...I actually wanted us to get him...lol I'll never pimp a WR again

Suspended...which means he cam into the league with Strike ONE or he had Strike ONE last season...4 game suspension is a strike two offense. One is also not publicized.

Why are these guys so stupid...heck if you want 15 years from now in your Rural mansion do all drugs you want. Of course 15 years from now very few will start then

I actually think that I prefer Gordon.

Blackmon had 1 massive game, 3 good games, 3 fair games, and 9 *Bleh* games.

They let you come into the league with a strike now. He had DUI before signing in the NFL.

That is true .... however Cecil Shorts had a better season than Blackmon, and did better in more individual games, even with Gabbert at QB.

Call me silly, but I think we would have probably won a few games if Haden hasn't been slammed with the four day ban. This will probably hurt them too...

Glad we didn't take him. I don't think you should ever take a WR high unless that is the only thing missing to make you an elite team.

Besides, those numbers in the Big 12 are so freaking inflated that it's hard to get a judge on guys. I keep reading about how accurate these Big 12 QBs are and then they get to the NFL and their accuracy sucks.

Whats the rush, we have our starter (I like Weeden), and how many 30+ QB's are there in the NFL, besides..if he fails next years crop of QB's are much better than this group ... JMHO .

I don't think the circumstances of the incident leading to the suspension has come out, has it? The DUI I mentioned was before he was in the NFL.

I'm NOT defending it. However, I will offer an explanation...

1. Try taking a 80 year old mans car keys. People love heir freedom, it's easy to say, "Just don't drive" but people are stubborn. Right or wrong, it's how people are.

2. He goes out, get drunk, which lets face it-- Almost anyone in their 20's, regardless of their profession probably do quite often -- and call a cab. You're a famous fooball player, cab drivers are going to be all over the fact that, "I gave Justin Blackmon a ride home when he was hammered!"

News like that gets out, then all of a sudden, he can't go out and have a good time without it being all over the internet that he was out partying the night before.

So why do these people do it? Two reasons -- Freedom and Privacy.

Quote:

It’s known that Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon will serve a four-game suspension to start the season for violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy. It’s not known what he specifically did to cause the suspension.

It’s safe to say that the suspension did not flow from Blackmon’s 2012 guilty plea to DUI. Even though Blackmon’s blood-alcohol concentration was measured at three times the legal limit of 0.08, that’s not the type of aggravating circumstance that will prompt the NFL to deviate from a fine under the substance-abuse policy in the amount of two game checks, not to exceed $50,000, for a first offense DUI.

Per a league source, the suspension came from something else, something not covered by the policy against performance-enhancing drugs, like Adderall. Under the substance-abuse policy, a suspension arises only after at least three violations of the policy against the use of recreational drugs or alcohol. In Blackmon’s case, it’s possible that he committed only two violations, since the DUI guilty plea likely put him in stage one of the substance-abuse program.

Either way, it’s clear that Blackmon’s rough year has continued well beyond the night on which he was driving a car with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.24 percent. And now the Jaguars have to decide whether to give him a second chance, again.

When your a multimillionate you dont take a taxi. You hire a professional driver who keeps his mouth shut and protects you from yourself when your out getting smashed.

The REAL good news: Jacksonville is still going to be a crappy football team this season, so Blackmon's absence won't really change much.

So Blackmon is trying to help the team in his own way. The "Tank for Clowney" or "Suck for Bridgewater" movements have already started.

The fact is, we drafted a guy in Gordon with a LOT more questions in the sobriety department that Blackmon. One helluva bigger gamble.

So far so good though.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

How was I acting all "high and mighty"?

I merely stated that a lot of people wanted us to drat him. Then I pointed out that Cecil Short had a better year than him, and that I would prefer Gordon to Blackmon.

That's acting "high and mighty"?

However, the simple fact is that he now has a strike against him. This is also his 2nd incident since being drafted. (He had a DUI in June of last year as well) Next one is more severe suspension.

Plus, this is what Blackmon has done to himself ....... he just lost all of his guarantees in his contract. He signed a fully guaranteed contract as a rookie ..... that voided the guarantees if he were to be suspended by the NFL. Bye bye guaranteed money. (except for his signing bonus, of course)

As far as Gordon, I have said that I thought it was idiotic for the kid to put his future at risk because he wanted to go get high. Hopefully he has matured to the point where he knows that he can't do that if he wants to continue to play in the NFL. It seems (knock on wood) as though he has.

The kid we drafted ..... I don't know all of his details. It does make me a little nervous that the kid would do something that damn stupid. Hopefully he too had learned.
