NFL Network has the 1987 AFC Championship Game on. For some reason I am watching .... and suffering .....

Don't do it man. It's not worth it. Step away from the ledge. You have friends. Don't jump.

I saw it as I was passing NFL Network and I kept going.

If we ever won a SB, I'd probably watch for a few laughs but not until that day.

I saw it too, but kept on flipping channels. It made me sick to my stomach when I watched it as an 8th grader then, and I'm certain it'd still have the same effect on me all these years later.

You know, I actually saw a replay of the Drive game a few years ago, and actually enjoyed watching it a bit. It was sort of great to see a "really good team" playing in Browns colors again. Sure, "The Drive" part sucks, but if you flip it off right before then, you can enjoy a really good game, and pretend the game ended on our last score.

I loved seeing all of those swing passes to Byner and Mack. They always seemed to get positive yardage, and helped open things up for others. Even if the run wasn't working at 100%, the swing passes were still effective.

In that game, Byner ran 15 times for 67 yards, but caught 7 passes for 120 yards. Mack also ran 12 times for 61 yards, and caught 4 passes for 28 yards. 11 of 26 Kosar completions went to the RB. Kosar was definitely a master of finding the open man, and putting the ball in position for that open man to actually do something with it. He had exceptional accuracy down the field as well, even though he lacked a big arm. (or really, even a medium arm)

He had to be a master at finding the open man. He couldn't run. Just a drop back was a struggle for him. His accuracy was uncanny considering his throwing motion. He didn't have a strong arm, but his anticipation was fantastic.

He could line up, read the d, and know where he was going with the ball, and throw it sooner than many other quarterbacks. Because he had to. Some qb's excel because of their strong arm, but the strong arm compensates for a "lack" of reading a d. Kosar was the other way. His d reads at the line compensated for all his other flaws.

Do you think he would be as good in today's NFL? Faster defense's that disguise themselves better..

I have no idea. That is above my pay grade.

However, faster defenses that disguise themselves better is a plus for the d. And, new rules for receivers MIGHT counter that. I just don't know. Also, O's are quicker/faster as well.

In short, who knows?

Funny I did the same thing. I like the suggestion to turn the game off after our last score

When I was flipipng past the station, I saw a highlight of the field goal.
I still believe that attempt was missed.

I'm 27 years old so I don't remember anything before the 92 or 93 season and I always catch myself watching those classic games. My dad always gets so angry at me when he sees it on TV, but it is so cool for me to see the Browns in an important game ... and with a good team!

Sadly, it's all I have to cling to ... I just have to turn those games off with a few minutes left.

Rich Karlis' kick was wide left....i'll go to my grave believing that, and that the refs were cold and just wanted to get inside.

Damn skippy it was. From where we were sitting, it was obvious. The refs took forever to raise their arms after looking at each other. I've not seen a replay from an angle that would make me think otherwise.

Ditto. I was sitting almost straight behind that damned goal post. (great seats) We started cheering because it went outside ...... and then the Refs looked at one another, and signaled it good. None of us could believe it.

I was actually on Parris Island at the time and had no idea until years later that there was such a thing as The Drive or The Fumble and was completely ignorant that we were that close to the Super Bowl two years in a row.

I actually remember the conversation with one of the Drill Instructors asking him who he liked in the Super Bowl and he didn't even know who was playing. I knew who was playing, it must have been an act of mercy that my family kept all that sadness from me.

The Drill Instructor did pick the Giants when I told him who was playing.

This is the first time that I've EVER HEARD that the go ahead kick was no good. Gonna try to find that on youtube.

Don't know why the video wouldn't embed onto the site, but go to about 50 seconds on the clip.

I dunno, hard to tell. Just glad I didn't have to go through the last few weeks of boot camp knowing we were that damn close.

I believe this too. What kills me is the technology today exists to really know the answer. At some point I swear I have seen a piece of footage of the kick from a sideline angle. It wouldn't take much effort at all to synch the endzone view to the sideline view (say at the moment the holder puts the ball down) and then run them together. When the ball meets the plane of the goalposts in the sideline view, all we need to see is where it is in the endzone view. We'll know if it was inside or outside the plane of that one post.

Good or no-good, I want closure on this.

I was in the end zone, right behind the goal post. These were pretty crappy seats to watch the game. The only thing that made it tolerable was the 2 girls I met when camping out for tickets for the game. They gave me their money so we could get tickets to sit together. (and I was already buying for a group of my friends) It was a really fun game right up to that kick.

That damn kick .... it was really high, and outside the goal post.

We jumped up in the end zone ready to cheer the miss ...... until the officials raised their hands, signalling the kick good. None of us could believe it. *Sigh* I was really looking forward to a great celebration with those 2 little cuties ...... but the end of the game just killed any amorous feelings for me.
