Like I said earlier, he's free to express his opinion, and I don't really see anything wrong with him doing so.

But it probably won't age well. For example, there were plenty of people who were free to express their opinions on segregation, and did so.

I bet many of them would take it back if they could.

We're now at a point where the writing is on the wall... might not have been the smartest thing to say, as it's not going to age well. He'll probably have to walk his comments back someday.

I understand the gist of your post here........but the other side of that is, if a person can't answer a question honestly, what CAN that person do?

He didn't say he was adamant about being against it. He didn't bring it up. The question was asked TO him. He didn't say he was anti-gay. He spoke his opinion. If it doesn't age well, so be it. Just because it happens to be the hot p.c. thing right now doesn't mean anything.

Right now, the next p.c. issue is guns - gun ownership. I'm for it. Does that make me a bigot? Stupid? Anti p.c.? Is my stance something that won't "age well"? I don't care. Doesn't mean I'm right, doesn't mean I'm wrong.

I would guess a minority of the people of this country are in FAVOR of gay marriage. That's a guess, by the way. Doesn't make them right, doesn't make them wrong......it just means that's how they feel. People are allowed to have feelings and beliefs. If they get backlash for it, that's the way it goes. Oh, that goes both ways, by the way.

Bottom line, I don't see how what he said is an issue, just as I don't see what Kluwe (spelling?) said is an issue. And the basketball player........okay, you're gay. Next story. You support gay marriage, you don't support gay marriage. What's the deal?

Oh, the deal is, if you don't support it, you're an evil person.

Yup, I get it. It's called "dump your beliefs at the door and follow along with the p.c. thing."

Completely agree. What point is there in asking the guy other than to possibly show him in a bad light?

So, he's not allowed to have an opinion?

Sure he does. As long as it agrees with those that support 'gay marriage'.

I say this with the utmost compassion towards those who don't believe in same-sex marriage because of religious beliefs...

What's so "p.c." about giving basic human rights to two adults who love each other? I don't see the "p.c." part about it.

This is an absurd comparison.

I respect your rights under the Second Amendment, but you don't need to bring up guns in every thread.

It's not a correct one.

Where did I say he was an evil person?

I said I have no problem with him expressing his opinion, but he might want to think about it, because it might look foolish down the line.

Look, if this board existed long ago, there would be some people saying some really silly or downright terrible things. At the time, it could be considered a side in a debate, but as time goes on, it doesn't seem so much like an opinion as being a moron. If it were the 80's, wed have people claiming that homosexuality is a mental illness. If it were the 60's, we'd have some posters arguing for segregation ... every single person would deny that they would to a T, but we certainly wouldn't have a board full of people saying something's wrong when the country was torn on it.

I'm just saying ... there were a lot of people who went on the record 'expressing their opinions', and years down the line, they wish they could've taken it back.

The trend of gay marriage approval is going to continue, it's eventually going to be law, and someday if Adrian Peterson has grandchildren he's going to have to explain to them why he said he was against gay marriage.

Somewhere in this thread there's been a switch from AP saying something some people would disagree with to, "Why is AP not ALLOWED to say what he wants?".

It will only look foolish compared to prevailing public opinion... In an absolute sense it will not look foolish like say... denying gravity or advocating for slavery... because for gay marriage, is there an absolute right or wrongness to it? His opinion will likely become more and more of a minority opinion, that doesn't make it foolish.

Adrian Peterson Says He’s ‘Not With’ Gay Marriage

May 27, 2013 12:08 PM

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — NFL MVP Adrian Peterson says he has family members who are gay whom he loves and respects. But on gay marriage, the Minnesota Vikings running back says “that’s not something I believe in.”

Peterson made his comments in a recent interview with Sirius/XM NFL radio. He was asked his thoughts on the Vikings cutting longtime punter Chris Kluwe, an outspoken advocate for gay rights and gay marriage.

Peterson says he considers Kluwe a good friend. He says: “I have relatives who are gay. I’m not biased towards them. I still treat them the same. I love ‘em. But again, I’m not with that. That’s not something I believe in. But to each his own.”

Gay marriage will become legal in Minnesota on Aug. 1

He has the same right to express his opinion as those who advocate gay marriage, the same ones who call Christians haters because of our beliefs ... JMHO

What he should have done, because I'm assuming the interview was supposed to be about football, is bring it back to that. Say something like "hey man, I thought we were here to talk football, not my personal/religious/moral/political beliefs." It's what I think ALL celebs (of any variety) should do when they are asked questions about hot button issues rather than whatever they're there to talk about. Stumping a movie? Great! Ask me about what shooting with XX star was like. And so on.

Personally, I don't really understand why this is even newsworthy. So he doesn't support gay marriage, big deal. Does it actually matter that much to people whether he supports it or not?

No, I think her point is that public figures should stick to talking about the things that made them public figures. If you are famous for acting, singing, sports, then your interviews should focus on acting, singing, and sports.

Unfortunately that's unrealistic because people want to feel a connection with celebrities and hear about their hobbies, their personal lives, etc... so we get questions to celebs in areas where they are not experts and they are just another person with an opinion... but because they are celebs, their opinions get broadcast and are open for comment.

Perhaps the other component that bugs people is that they can't respond to AP and tell him their own opinion or why they think he's right or wrong... See some of the people on here who are the first to respond, "Why should I care what AP thinks about gay marriage?" will debate somebody like me or ytown for days on what we think about it... so if they don't care what AP thinks, why do they care what I think?

Clever, but this is a two-way street my friend. If AP said in this interview that he was gay, you and YTown would respond "So?" and then hang around the thread for days debating the topic, which begs the question, if you really don't care, why invest so much time talking about it?

What did I debate in the other thread?

On the other thread, I said, "So".

I then responded to that I found it questionable judgement for an employer to put a man and a woman together in a single hotel room on a business trip.

I then posted a different point of view from a former player.

I then responded to a poster who brought up Colt McCoy, and I pointed out that he has spoken openly about his Faith.

Then, I answered your question about the "So?" comment.

I then was challenged about gay marriage and such. I responded that I had voted against the anti-gay marriage amendment, and had written in opposition to that amendment prior to the vote.

I responded to individual posts that I felt should be responded to .... as happens on a message board. Outside of the Larry Johnson article, I didn't even post anything that was really on the topic posted. I debated "So?" with you, and with PDR. I made a few jokes, and defended myself against what I considered to be untruths about a position I held, and long established, on this board. Oh, and I pointed out that Colt McCoy is a strong and outspoken Christian.

I hardly "hung around" debating the initial subject. Would you care to point out where I "hung around the thread for days debating the topic"?

Oh, and I gave you your perfunctory "So?" that you asked for earlier. I really don't care much what any celebrity cares about much of anything.

Because I don't care if a guy is gay, I do find it interesting the news it receives, the way it is reported, and the publics reaction to it. I spend far more time commenting on the people commenting on the issue than the issue itself because the issue itself, is sort of a non-issue for me.

Looks like you've done the investigative work for me with this long list of things you wrote in that thread. Perhaps you don't want to classify your comments as "debate," and that's fine by me, but certainly this list of comments you made constitutes an investment of time in a topic that you claimed to care nothing about. In any case, I wasn't making a serious criticism of you or DC. You guys provide thoughtful and reasonable responses, so I'm glad you do invest the time in topics for which you presumably have no interest.

Haha!

I'll just throw in my $.02

I specifically come to these threads (the "my son got suspended for pointing a banana at someone" and "AP hates gay people" threads) in order to see where the conversation goes. It's usually pretty quick that people get to the real subject at hand (ridiculous zero tolerance rules and their effect, sports stars roles/responsibilities outside of sports). I enjoy seeing people debate the real subjects.

If we were 5 pages in, and still talking about the nature of the LEGO gun, and a detailed analysis on the intricacies of the "ruckus on the bus", then that would be different.

Nope, what I was attempting to say is that an interview about football should probably stick to that. If he had signed up for an interview about social issues, by all means, speak your opinion. That's what that interview was designed to do.

He's absolutely entitled to his opinion and entitled to state it whenever he chooses. I just think perhaps an interview about football is a poorly timed choice In which to voice your opinion on social issues, even if the interviewer asks the questions. That's the interviewers job, to get that sound byte regardless of topic. The celeb shouldn't step into that trap, because that's all it is, a trap to get a controversial sound byte.

On the other hand ..........

Why should someone have to be quite about their beliefs? Personally I put no more value in the opinions of celebrities than I would in anyone else's opinions ... but they are entitled to express themselves as they see fit. (Just as anyone is)

Just like I said bro. Celbrities are still people. They all grew up just like us and they are no different than us except that they make more money. I was sure of this once I got to be friends with current players, and former players. My opinion was grounded in cement when I got to know actors and adtress'es who are no different than the rest of us

Never said he couldn't answer the question, just that he probably shouldn't in that case. Just because the question is asked, doesn't mean it has to be answered. I'm thinking in the context of the interview. How is his stance on gay marriage in anyway germain to a football discussion? It's not. But, if asked and answered, expect some type of backlash...this thread is mild backlash. Plus, I'd guess we're missing context, or possibly parts of his actual response, there's always creative editing with these things. Could be he requested to be asked about it and wanted his opinion out there. Don't know, honestly, don't care. Just stating how i think i.Would have responded in his (or any other celeb) shoes. AP has little to no affect on my life, or sports enjoyment.

*shrug*

Athletes tend to be role models for kids. Should athletes really encourage kids to say it's ok to deny rights to others? I thought we broke away from that when we gave women the right to vote, African Americans the basic rights they deserved, and other similar times in this country.

I get the religious connotations behind all this, really I do. I'm just not sure why religious dogma needs to play into the laws which govern this country. The pilgrims escaped Great Britain because of religion, the founding fathers were mainly deists who didn't believe in the modern day form of the Christian God, and we even signed a treaty in Tripoli which states we aren't a Christian nation. Never mind the whole separation of church and state deal, either.

Maybe he feels it's important for him to express his feelings, just as celebrities and athletes who are strongly in favor of gay marriage feel that they need to express themselves as well.

Brendon Ayanbadejo has been extremely outspoken in favor of gay marriage. I don't hear anyone saying that he should just stay within the football arena.

I don't care who says what .... and I don't have to pay attention to them if I choose not to. I can even say "So?" if I choose. (Or even "And?", "But?", or "Or?")

I really haven't heard it that much about Kluwe. I have read that he is active in promoting gay marriage, but I cannot really remember hearing too many people say that he should just shut up and play football.

In fact, I just ran a search, and while 2 posters opined that he is a loudmouth, one actually said that he hasn't been negative with his comments. The other asked if we need a distraction on the team.

That's about it.

I look at a Google search, and I don't find many negative comments and/or articles ... if any. I put his name into Google, and all I get are that he supports gay marriage, and that he signed with the Raiders.

I just don't see massive outpouring of criticism towards him.

If you watch any ESPN show it was hard to miss.

People believe he was cut because of his comments. His replacement didn't have THAT much better punt average in college. It's easy replacing a punter that could cause a distraction.
