3.5 games back of Detroit (all alone in 2nd place)

Well, we gave away game1 to KC, they gave away game2. At least we just took last nights game and ran away with it.

Looked pretty scary there for awhile, but Mendoza can only look like a good pitcher for a few innings. Once that lid came off, things were going well.

Our starting pitching has really done well recently. Amazing how up and down the team is, but Masterson, Kluber, McAllister(when he's back) all look to be sure bets for our rotation moving forward. The next few months will determine which of Ubaldo, Carrasco, Bauer, or maybe even Kazmir join them (I guess Tomlin, but TJ surgery recovery might push him to long relief).

Wow ... I'm surprised we're that close. We lost 8 in a row, and I thought that was curtains for us. I guess Detroit hasn't fared much better though. We certainly seem to be a streaky team though, that's for sure. We just need to get hot, and stay hot.

we turned ourselves into a high SO team (both bats & pitchers). it's not necessarily a bad thing (as long as we get power from the bats), but it tends to make things a bit streakier. shouldn't be quite as crazy as it's been, but I'll take our current position. we have a relatively easy schedule the rest of the season, so we should be able to compete if we get the pitching.

After losing 8 straight games there we have now taken our last three series (6-3). Our offense has seemed a big sluggish despite fairly decent pitching. The last three years we've started hot, and then had absolutely terrible slumps after the all-star break. Let's hope this is that slump and we come out on fire after the all-star break. The Tigers in my opinion are a bit overrated and we can certainly make a legit push for the division if our offense starts swinging the bat like we did during our 16-4 run we had in late April/Early May.

As long as we keep trotting Valverde out there, the Indians will control who wins the division. He's that bad, and I can't frickin' believe we resigned him, let alone not put a quick end to that experiment. He's blown 2 saves of 9th inning shutouts. Last night he had 4 ER in one inning. He's absolutely ruining excellent starting pitching.

Hey Water - JC

I don't know how to figure Kazmir. Last night, 7 IP, 7 K's, 0 BB, 1 ER, and the Win. And yet, his ERA is still well over 5. The radio announcers had him throwing 93-94 in the 7th. One "yeah-but": it was the Twins. Fingers crossed that we are watching the Comeback Player Of The Year - it would be a huge boost for this staff.

It's amazing how motivational talks of Carrasco's outing (despite the nodo) and the possibility of bringing Bauer up earlier than expected or being in the market to pick up a pitcher can be.

I think Kazmir is going to be is going to be the two faces of EVE this season , lol . If he makes through the year with a wining record and a HALF ASS decent ERA he should be all smiles and good to go next season and a few more !

hopefully as the long man out of the bullpen next year (or later this year)

Masterson
McAllister
Kluber
Bauer
Carrasco/Ubaldo?

Kazmir, Tomlin, and loser for SP5 can battle to be the injury replacement

If we can shore up the starting rotation, I think we need to find a good quality closer. Pestano gives up almost as many runs in 1-2 innings as our our starters in 5-6. Plus, Perez is a little flaky and may spend some time suspended if those drug charges stick.

What was supposed to be the strength of this team, the bullpen, is turning out to be its Achilles Heel. I'm officially worried about it. Drug charges aside, I think Perez is hurt. He got lit up for 3 HR's in a rehab outing at AA-Akron the other night. I also think Pestano is hurting - he's lost about 5 MPH off his fastball. Another guy I counted on was Nick Hagadone. World class stuff, but no command. That leaves Allen, Smith, Albers, and Shaw. Over on the Indians MB, there's some who think we should sign Valverde, who got DFA'd by the Tigers. Yikes.
At this point it appears that Francona might need to go closer-by-committee, because Pestano isn't the answer. He hasn't been right since that stupid World Baseball tournament in March.

Pretty ironic, don't you think? Our strength is our Achilles Heel and the starting rotation is starting to tighten up a bit. I really like what I've seen of Kluber, McAllister and Bauer. Masterson is pretty consistent and hopefully, Kazmir has turned the corner. I guess it helps that we got a chance to play the Twinkies this week.

Yeah, like we needed another lesson in irony in Cleveland sports. Like Travis Hafner coming back here as a Yankee and mashing like he did in 2006 - after 5+ years of struggles here. Or Brandon Phillips wearing us out every time we play the Reds - guy couldn't hit a beachball with a tennis racquet when he was an Indian. LeCharles Bentley. Wayne Garland. Jim Chones. Its annoying.

Hey! Sports Gods! That irony thing? WE GET IT!!

Okay, I'm done. We now return you to your normal Indians thread.

Pestano is not pitching like he has the last couple of years , Perez is shot right now ( not my favorite any who ) Smith has been good and bad , like the kid Allen and the rest are what they are .. If we made the play-offs ( wild card ) , we don't be going anywhere ..

A team's bullpen is a wildcard EVERY year, no matter how good they were in a prior season. Tons of turnover, zero consistency in pitching routines with consecutive days pitched on occasion, and injuries. A bullpen can go from bad to good as quickly as it can go in the opposite direction- all in a year's time.

Either way, it has been rough. I though Hagadone would have improved some and our other lefty Hill is nothing special. I also do not see a "go-to" guy. Scary for a team with playoff aspirations.

I guess technically every team has an "ace" if the term refers to your best starter-- Your #1. So yes, in the context of my writing, we do.

Masterson certainly qualifies if anyone does. He has started 16 games, and won 9 of those. (with 5 losses) He saves the bullpen in most games.

he does save the bullpen (averaging almost 7IP/start). to me, he's been a SP3, but, honestly, Kluber has been our best pitcher recently and McAllister was our most consistent pitcher until he got hurt.

it's a much nicer picture right now than the beginning of the year when the rotation was such a huge question mark (with Ubaldo actually doing decent and Kazmir doing well enough in his role along with the possibilities of Bauer and Carrasco), but I wouldn't want to mark anyone down as an ace because we haven't had that guy yet.

I see Memphis has a different definition than I do for ace, which is fine. I guess that makes the battle with Tillman a battle of aces too (fun to market I suppose).

I do agree McAllister has been one of the more consistent pitcher we've had...but he's injured. That plays a part. I love Kluber's future but he is nowhere near Masterson at this stage IMO. He may end up being a stud and let's hope so-- that only makes us better.

Not including Masterson's 7 run game against the Yankees, he's given up an average of 2 runs a start in his last five appearances. I haven't looked up Kluber, who has been pitching well admittedly, but I'd say that's rather worthy of being an ace. Add in the fact Masterson has come in and ended losing streaks.

He has the chance, based on tonight's game to be at the 10 game win mark in June. Not too shabby.

Just looked up Kluber's stats.

In the past five games, excluding his worst game (like I did with Masterson) he has a better ERA per start. So yes, recently, his ERA has been better than JM.

I still think Masterson is the better pitcher....we'll have to wait until the end of the season. Good stuff.

I find it a tough pill to swallow saying Kluber is our best pitcher RIGHT NOW....but he is someone I look forward to watching maturing.

Just when I was going to say that I thought Masterson was the Ace, he gave up 5 runs in an inning....... Wow, did that go downhill fast....

Trying to make a comeback against one of the better closers in the game.

1st 2 men in the 9th reached.

Let's go Tribe!

Or Lonnie could hit into a double play instead.

I'm sure that he had to be at least as frustrated as we are.

Luckily the Tigers got drilled tonight too.

The Hagadone in the 6th or 7th experiment needs to be over....Sorry he isnt there yet, not this year...too many times he's been unable to hold the lead or keep us close, it's over maybe next year....Time to find another middle relief guy...

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but the timing is weird in this. Hagadone has dropped his ERA by 1.5 runs since June 2, and has an ERA of 3.12 over that time. While I'm not saying that's something to get excited about, its much better than it was. That being said, we've got Perez coming back Friday and Myers returning shortly after that. House will be sent back on Friday for Bauer/Carrasco, so 3 of the 8 bullpen arms right now will be gone within two weeks or so. House will be one. Hagadone will be the second person gone. I'm not sure who the third will be. Asdrubal will be back tonight or tomorrow, and Johnny Mac will be gone. Lots of changes coming to this roster in short order.

Your right about the ERA thing, The kids just young, I do think he's gonna be a heck of a pitcher in a couple years, Whats tuff to watch is we all know inorder to get better you have to pitch, but at his age he's very inconsistant and gives up the gofer ball at bad times...but thats how you learn...I do like him, but this learning thing stinks when your chasing the Tigers....

carrasco experiment needs to end,, he just don't have big league stuff right now. He has no idea where his pitches are going.

carrasco had no business going 6 innings, i would have pulled him after 5. they were hitting the hell out of him...and what happens, he gives up a double with bases load...trash. Theres a reason why is era is what it is...he sucks..

Tribe was down 8-5 going to the 9th ....... and they have fought their way back to 8-7, and the tying run on 2nd with no one out.

Now the tying run on 3rd with 1 out, with Kipnis to the plate.

Let's go Tribe!

The good news: Indians sit 2 games out of 1st, and 2-1/2 games out in the wild card at the half-way point of the season. The bats appear to have awakened. Injured guys returning (Cabrera, Swisher, Perez) and the easier half of the schedule ahead give hope that the Indians could win 88-90 games this year and have a decent shot at the playoffs.

The bad news: two of our brightest pitching prospects got lit up last night. Bauer and Carrasco both showed they're not ready for the big stage. Indians need McAllister back healthy.

Some local sports yackers were asking if the Indians should seek pitching or a bat at the trade deadline - they all thought we need a bat. I disagree, I think we need a matchup lefty in the bullpen and another starter.

I agree. The bats seem sufficient to me. Lefty out of the pen and another quality starter would be fantastic. If I had to choose just one, give me the starter.
