... the term Red Skins is insulting and demeaning.
From Wiki:
"Hunky may be:
A derogatory American slang term for immigrants of Ruthenian, Hungarian or Slovak descent..."
Also from Wiki:
"Wop is a pejorative racial slur used primarily, but not exclusively, to refer to people from Italy."
I am a mutt descendant of both of those nationalities and am in no way offended to be referred to as either which has happened on numerous occasions throughout my life. In fact, I'm a bit proud to be either. It gives me some identity regardless of whether or not either term is politically correct. For the most part I take either as an endearing nickname.
I trust most sports teams choose to be named after someone or something that is strong, respectable, heroic, fearless, up for the challenge and overall of a conquering mind-set.
Nobody names a team after something or someone of whom or of which they do not respect. They name the team after someone or something that they do respect, look up to and hope to become the embodiment of the qualities of which that someone or something possesses.
From "How All 32 NFL Teams Got Their Names" regarding the Washington Redskins...
"The franchise was first based in Boston. George Preston Marshall and three others acquired an NFL franchise in 1932 and named it the "Boston Braves" after the city’s existing baseball team, which back then was a common practice. At the end of the first year and with losses upward of $46,000, Marshall was left as the sole owner.
The following year Marshall hired as his head coach Lone Star Dietz, a Native-American, as well as many other Native-American players. The Native-American players disliked the name Braves so Marshall abandoned the name in favor of "Boston Redskins." On opening day 1933, the entire team lined up for the team photo in war paint, feathers and some even in full headdress."
my comment: Those players were a hell of a lot closer to the original Native Americians than anyone living today and they embraced the name.

I think it is much ado about nothing. I'd bet that most of the people who think the name is derogatory and are politicking to have it changed are no closer to being offended than perhaps having over-thought the issue a bit too much or are jumping on a band wagon of which they believe will get them so notoriety for doing something noble.

Sweet find on the lineage of the name. My caring has gone from 5% to 0%.
When you mentioned being a mutt it made me think. I have no real cultural heritage. I am some mix of scottish, irish, german, french, and butterscotch ripple.
I wonder if the fact that so many people no longer have a genetic or cultural lineage has any effect on this pc stuff. Many of us are sort of a homogenized american product.

It wasn't a racial slur when it was created though. I was watching a special on Ellis Island and they explained where "wop" came from. When people deboarded a boat without papers, they were put in a special area until they figured out to do with them....and there were called "wops".

Cool to know that. Must have been that an abundant number of those were Italians so the name stuck to them. "Papers? I don't gotta no papers!"

Do you know what WOP stands for? With Out Papers... Just thought I'd drop that in there. LOL for whatever reason, it's used to describe Italians yet, people from all over came here with out papers. I often wonder why it stuck to Italians so much? Just more useless information that I store up

That's a fallacy.
Wop was an insult, meaning, someone with swagger, a hood, pimp, gangster, etc. Guappo and Guappi are kind of the root words. (Guappi are/were to southern Italy what Mafia was to Sicily)
I dated an Italian girl in High School, and another about 6 years after that, and both had old school fathers. Both fathers hated me .... since I don't have a drop of Italian in me. I learned a lot of fun words and insults ... most of which I have forgotten. For some reason the explanation on that one stuck.
