Ok today I turned on my laptop and everything was running very smoothly as usual. Then I get this blue screen that comes up and says that to prevent my computer from further harm it is going to automatically shut down. The screen said more but I didn't read it.
I didn't think anything of it so I immediately turned back on my laptop. As soon as I do this I get a completely black screen that says "operating system not found." I can't do anything from this screen I tried to hit all the keys nothing works.
If anyone was any advice on what I should do or what is wrong with it please reply thanks.

You got the infamous "blue screen of death." That is not good, unless someone gave you the fake one as a joke.

Blue screen of death can be serious but most often times a shutdown and you're OK. "Operating system not found" is a MUCH bigger issue. There are several reasons for that and none of them are good... fried hard drive, missing or damaged boot sector/record, BIOS problems. This isn't a good thing Savior, most likely you're not going to recover anything from that laptop.

As Heat pointed out, on a scale from 1 to 10.. you're sitting right about at "you're screwed". One thing to try.... unplug the power and drop the battery out of it. Press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds. The thing should be completely discharged at this point... pop the battery back in, plug it in and turn it on, see what happens.

I think what Heat and prpl are saying is "it's fourth and 45, and you're punter pulled a hammy on the last kick".

When you turned it back on did you hear a grinding sound?? If so the HDD went bad. You could try to recover the data off it yourself...but just a warning...everytime you turn on the laptop now the HDD will get more damaged...and the more damaged the harder it is for professionals to recover the data (as well as more expensive)...that is if you decide to go that route.
Before you try that you could try a couple things that have worked in the past for me. First off you will need an external drive to copy the files to. I would first try this: remove the HDD from the case (usually just a small screw...than tap on the HDD a few times. put it back in the case and turn on the laptop. if it boots up...quickly copy all the files you want to save over to the external drive.
If that doesn't work remove the HDD again (remove the battery and unplug from the wall first. This should always be done before removing anything) Place the HDD in a zip lock bag with a silicon packet, close the bag and place in the freezer for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes connect the HDD again and plug in the power cord and try to boot again. if it boots, cop[y the files you want to save to the external drive. This may sound crazy, but it worked for me as well as for others. Good luck

Have you tried beating it? I mean, it works for making kids and wives get back to work again... why not computers? ::ducks and runs::

You can recover your system, if you have the backup disks, or original OEM Windows software.
Your system will tell you to put your system disk in and press OK. When it gives you that option, then it will give you the option to [F] Format or, [R] Repair. Select Repair and follow the intructions. After you reboot, your system should return to normal.
If you cannot get your system to boot using the system CD ROM, you may have to go into BIOS and change the boot sequence to CD ROM being the first boot device rather than your hard disk. This should do the trick.
After you boot your system with the CD ROM, you would want to go back into BIOS and change your boot sequence back to it's previous state, and you must go into BIOS and do this, you cannot achieve this doing system restore.

I hate to be master of the "try the obvious", but does your computer have a 3-1/4 floppy dirve? And if so, is there a disk in it? If I had a dime for everytime someone called me with this "problem"...

it wouldn't give "operating system not found" if he left a floppy in. It would say "invalid system disk" Usually you get the BSOD for a couple reasons, there is a new piece of hardware that is possibly causing and IRQ confict, a memory error, or a hard drive that has had its boot partition corrupted or fragmented somehow. Also happens alot with overclocking, but i doubt this is the issue. Usually the BSOD will give you a stop error. You can go to MS site and decifer it to better help figure out exactly what the problem is. One thing i would try though that i've had alot of sucess with is chk dsk, since you can't boot you have to get to a DOS prompt.. type in chkdsk /f, that will check your disk for any inconsistencies and also attempt to repair any, problems it finds. If this is unsuccessful, you might have to reformat and reinstall. But before you do you can take the hard drive out and slave it if you are using a desktop and pull the files off that way. Or if using a laptop, find someone that has one of those USB enclosure hard drives, all they are is PATA laptop drives and you can take your hard drive and switch it with the one in there and plug it in to another computer to back up data. hope this helps

The problem is though I do have all of those cds but my computer doesn't have a disk drive in it. For some reason I bought it with no disk drive. I'd rather buy a new one than buy a portable cd rom drive.
And no there was no floppy disk in it.

A laptop without a CD ROM drive? is it a Compaq that has the ability for swappable drives?

It's a fujitsu (it was the right price) with 2 batteries instead of one. The 2nd one goes where the cd-rom drive should be. I could buy one but it's 300 bucks.

Not having the OS, would it be recognized by BIOS on a boot so he could boot the system from the CD ROM?
Let me refrain that...The OS is there, but it is hiding. Would the system BIOS recognize the CD ROM drive without access to the OS?

that would be dependant on the motherboard's bios actually. Almost all newer ones should, as they support booting from USB floppy, cd/dvd & HDD I don't even put floppy drives in my systems anymore because I have a USB floppy drive... that and except for extreme system restore chores I never need one
