If Gordon's story is true, shouldn't there be a doctor's script for the cough medicine he took?
Regardless of what the story is, Gordon is down his last chance here in Cleveland because he will be cut if screws up again.

I don't think this is confirmed as FACT. Its an assumption from Mary Kay.
I read an article that was posted on another Brown's board [while this one was down] that he didn't bring his 3 failed collegiate tests w/him into the NFL. The only people I have heard say that he did come in w/one strike are posters who are making excuses for him.
We rip reporters all the time for not asking certain questions. I can't fathom why not one reporter questioned him if this was his second failed test in the NFL and if it was---what was he busted for on the first violation. Would that have been so hard, Cleveland reporters?

Codeine would be an odd drug to lie about using considering it brings up the possibilty of purple drank. imo
covering up recreational drug use with implied recreation drug use is a strange lie. Im not sure if adderall became a cliche excuse but there has to be a better lie than codeine.

Josh screwed the Browns this time...for the first time. This suspension hurts the whole team and the fans. He certainly has a long way to go, to regain our trust again.

j/c Cleveland Browns captain D'Qwell Jackson says teammate Josh Gordon must make changes BEREA, Ohio – One of the Browns most respected players has a message for talented yet troubled teammate Josh Gordon: He’s running out of football “lives.” Inside linebacker D’Qwell Jackson said the team supports the second-year receiver, who will miss the season’s first two games due to drug suspension, but that he’s exhausting chances at a young age. Another failed test might produce a season-long ban for a 22-year-old who’s an integral member of the franchise’s new vertical passing attack. Jackson’s comments were part of a wide-ranging interview about leadership and the upcoming season. “No matter how many bodies you put in front of him or people who speak to him, Josh has to be willing to make a change for himself,” said Jackson, the team’s defensive captain, in a phone interview. “I could talk to him all day if I wanted to. (Coach Rob Chudzinski) could talk to him all day if he wanted to, but it’s not going to do any good unless he takes that next step. “He doesn’t have that many lives left . . . He’s got one more time to really straighten things up before he’s got to leave. I think he is starting to realize that.” Gordon, who tested positive for marijuana three times in college, said again Monday the codeine that triggered his latest failed test was unintentionally ingested through cough syrup prescribed to him for strep throat in February. The league does not reveal the substance when announcing suspensions and fines. The Baylor product said he didn’t take codeine recreationally and stressed that he’s staying clean. He apologized to the organization and it’s fans, noting he has much to prove. He also was contrite for Tweets of support for LeBron James and Miami Heat last month that irked some Cleveland fans. Jackson, a 2006 second-round draft pick and the team’s most tenured player, believes Gordon is doing everything coaches are asking of him right now. Gordon enters training camp off a solid rookie season that saw him finish with five touchdowns and rank eighth in the NFL with a 16.1 yards per catch average. But the suspension coupled with the failed college drug tests are coming to define Gordon as much as his talents. “These mistakes he’s making early on in his career people are watching,” Jackson said. “Players and coaches are watching. We all wish him the best. People make mistakes. If he wants to last in this league and be successful and productive and have his word mean anything to anyone over his career I think right now would be the time to straighten those things out . . . He’s young and he’s going to have to learn quick in this business.” Jackson does not just dispense advice to first and second-year players. A season ago, after Joe Haden drew a four-game drug ban, Jackson made reference to the star cornerback’s lifestyle and fleet of luxury cars. “He’s a flashy guy,” the eighth year veteran told reporters. “Hopefully he’ll correct that issue with the cars one of these days. Get rid of ’em.” http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/07/cleveland_browns_captain_dqwel.html

Not sure what's wrong with Haden having many cars,, if I had the money there are about 4 that I'd love to own.. doesn't make me a bad guy..
But I think he's referring to lifestyle. Living humble rather than livin large.
Smarter to live humble.
Something that Gordon has to learn quickly.. hope he does because he really showed some talent last year..

J/C People have started this whole story about how somehow Gordon's college drug use put him in stage one of the NFL policy, but I do not believe, nor do I see how that can be the case. The NFL only has control over what a player does as a member of the NFL. It seems to me that a player had some kind of problem either prior to the draft, or as an unsigned player, and the NFL was powerless to discipline him because he was not under the control of the NFL in any way, shape, or form. Gordon didn't attend the combine, so he didn't do the "pee in a cup" thing as part of an official NFL activity. He would not have begun official NFL activities until he hit Cleveland. He has to have failed one NFL drug test prior to the most recent one in order for him to be suspended. (Pluto backs this up here:) http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2013/07/cleveland_browns_intent_at_qb.htmlFrom the moment Banner and his crew took over, they have been very guarded with their praise of Gordon. Now we know why. Gordon had already flunked one NFL drug test, because a player isn't suspended until he fails a second one. That says it all right there. Gordon has failed 2 NFL drug tests, and was suspended as a result of the 2nd failed test. The NFL does not suspend a player for their 1st failed test. The 2 game suspension indicates that it wasn't a PED that Gordon was suspended for, but that's about it. He has peed dirty twice for the NFL so far, and will serve a suspension because of it. If he does so again, it will be a much longer suspension. I hope that someone gets that though his head.

I think they do actually use a college incident as strike one but I'm not positive about it. I recall they wouldn't let Tressel work for the Colts until he served a suspension for acts committed in College football. College football is a minor league system for the Pro's. They work in collusion...

I'm prematurely adding him to our lengthy list of early round draft pick busts. But, I might be wrong. It might not be premature.

Bust? Hell, Ricky Williams never stopped smoking weed and he had a long(though sporadic) career. I think it's far too early to call the kid a bust. He was more productive last year than Momass or Robiskie ever were.

LOL, totally agree. I understand the frustration but the rate at which some people give up on our players is mind blowing. Same type of panicked thinking that leads a coach to tell his QB to not throw interceptions... only increasing interceptions thrown. Put your faith in them, if they fail, cut 'em. No reason to be down on them before they've proven ineptitude.

From the time Ricky Williams had his first drug-related suspension until he retired, he started 13 games, ran for 3600 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. In six seasons.

I said something similar on the last Gordon thread. The only way you can get a drunk to stop drinking is if the drunk wants to quit. The kid has a problem. Others see it, even if there are people still making excuses for him and twisting the truth w/this strike one thing. Heck, his own teammates are addressing it. I heard Obi talking about it the other day, as well. He needs to stop.
I really don't think he feels much remorse. Five failed drug tests in a couple of years. Wow!
Hey PDR---will you post that picture of him w/the pipe and pill bottle again? Let's take a look at see how contrite he appears.

Good read, Jackson is right Gordon is riding a very thin streak of lightning. Ball is 100% in his court so rather what unfolds from here is on Josh and noone else but himself. Kid better man up and grow up.

Cleveland Browns' Joe Banner says Josh Gordon knows 'the rope that's left isn't long' July 24, 2013 at 10:12 PM BEREA, Ohio -- Browns CEO Joe Banner made it clear Wednesday that receiver Josh Gordon, suspended for the first two games of the season for a positive codeine test, is on a short leash both with the Browns and the NFL. Gordon, who says he ingested the codeine unintentionally in prescription cough syrup, could face possible banishment from the NFL for a year if he tests positive again. "He spent a fair amount of time talking to (head coach Rob Chudzinski) and he’s got to do some work and he understands he’s going to be held accountable and he gets (that) the rope that’s left isn’t long,'' said Banner to reporters. "In working with the coaches, they need to see that commitment, that work ethic. Obviously, off the field he needs to make good choices.'' Banners' remarks came on the heels of linebacker D'Qwell Jackson telling The Plain Dealer's Tom Reed that it's time for Gordon to straighten himself out. In addition to the positive codeine test, Gordon failed three marijuana tests in college and violated the league's substance abuse policy at least one other time to get to the point of a suspension. “No matter how many bodies you put in front of him or people who speak to him, Josh has to be willing to make a change for himself,” Jackson said. "I could talk to him all day if I wanted to. (Chudzinski) could talk to him all day if he wanted to, but it’s not going to do any good unless he takes that next step. ... I think he is starting to realize that.” Gordon can practice with the team during training camp and play in all four preseason games, but cannot be with the team Sept. 2-16. web page Banner's thirst for media attention might come back to bite him with very poor choice of words.

No doubt.
I would imagine he was tested when he walked thru the TC doors yesterday? today?
If not ordered by the NFL, would you, if you were the Browns, fake testing him just to drive the "reality nail" in a bit more?
If negative he should be good to go............till the bye week. If he fly's home, that's where the danger zone begins. Mom/dad/sis probably won't entice him but when he's with his supposed pals/cronies/rappy's the potential to "fall off the wagon" is at an 11 on a scale of 10.
Disregard the above if he catches another cold between now and the bye week.

dawglover...clearly you don't know Joe Banner.
Only I do...you see, I do a lot of research. I know that probably seems odd to you and others, as I'm the only one who does this.
But if you had done any research on Joe Banner, you'd know that he lacks empathy...his motives are based in a desire to create turmoil and hurt others.
If you or I saw a small child with an ice cream cone and decided we wanted one, we'd probably walk down to Dairy Queen. Joe Banner wouldn't. He'd punch the kid in the stomach and take it, if he felt like it.
It's just who he is. He should probably be committed to a mental asylum.
