Okay, I thought the NBA had changed its rules so that the playoff teams were ordered 1-8 based on record, regardless of whether they were division leader or not. That being said, how did the Cavs drop from 2 to 5 last night even tho they have a better record than Toronto and Miami???

Because the rule applies to only the top 2 teams in the division/conf.....Chicago got the #2 spot....which bumped us to 5 regardless of our record compared to other division winners....
Playoff Seeding:
The first four seeds in each conference will continue to be given to the three division winners and the team with the next best regular season record, but these four teams will now be seeded in order of their regular season records. Among other things, this change will ensure that the two teams with the best records in the conference will not meet earlier than the Conference Finals.
So sorry...the rule isn't for only the top 2 teams...but instead there is only 1 spot in the top 4 for a team with a better record...which means it's usually a #2 team in a division that can move up(who is not winning it's own division)

That makes no sense at all. Why do it for just the top 2 teams?? Sometimes I want to punch David Stern.

Home court goes to whoever has the better record though.

I still think it's bogus. They really need to do it right.

It's because they want to make winning the division worth something. Otherwise, they might as well just do away with the divisions and call it the Eastern Conference. Quote:

If the Cavs would just win games they were supposed to, this wouldn't be an issue.

exactly....chicago is on fire right now...we need to win the next 3 games to keep up with them or else we will have no shot at 2nd seed and play MIAMI in round 1

Thanks for asking this. I was just wondering how the Cavs playoffs hopes were looking. Happy Easter Jersey Girl.

The Cavs are in the playoffs but the way they've been playing lately they don't deserve to be. Happy Easter to you too! *smooch*

first and foremost. The playoff picture is that The Celtics arent in it Ha, secondly. This year's playoffs is in direct response to the Clippers having home court advantage over the Nuggets last year despite the Nuggets winning their division and placing 3rd. Thirdly, its also a direct response to having the Spurs/Mavs in the 2nd round. Now, heres my take. Tough Beans. If you dont want to be the 4 seed. Win your division. If you want to make the finals, beat the top team. Who cares when you face them. Thats my take. Top 3 should be division winners, let the rest fill in accordingly. Suck it up because the Mavs play the Spurs in the 2nd round. Suck it up. Win then

that's easy. division winners get in the playoffs. that should be the reward for winning the division. once they're in though, i don't see why they shouldn't be seeded strictly based on their records. otherwise you end up penalizing teams with better records because they weren't in a crappier division. isn't that how the playoff system works in the nfl?

I liked the old 2 division format myself, wish they wouldn't have changed.

this format has nothing to do with the clippers having home court over the nuggets last year. the main reason we have the lower seed getting homecourt is in direct response from a few years ago when higher seeds had homecourt over lower seeds despite having a worse record. to me this makes sense. why give a team homecourt when they have won 6-10 fewer games. winning the division is fine, but does anybody thinks the heat should get homecourt over the cavs or bulls when the heat played like bums for better part than half the year.? I don't.

Yes, I can explain it,....unless there are upsets, it'll be Detroit vs.Dallas,...forget everything else.
