After watching the game last night with Jimmy D and the Berner, I found myself asking the same question several times.
Why the hell do we not have Bernie on this staff? He reads defenses with such ease it is automatic. It's incredible.
We have a QB with physical gifts. He has a gun and weapons but some of the biggest aspects of the game he has issues with are his ability to read a defenses and avoid locking. While his performance last night was super encouraging, I still saw him locking onto recievers. That may fly in the preseason but the better defenses we face this year will sniff that out easily.
It was stunning to me how quickly and easily Bernie could identify defenses and and what the QB should do in each scenario.
I wonder though, if that is something you can teach. But one thing's for sure. Bernie proved to be one of the best at the intellectual side of quarterbacking while he was playing and he still has that ability. And we have a guy who struggles with that.
As to why we haven't hired him...love the guy, but he has no coaching experience, a host of personal issues, a history of substance abuse, he appears to be mentally unstable...
...should I keep going? Does that sound like someone who would be a good coaching hire?
He's got a good gig and is right where he should be.
LOL,, don't be offended, but it comes up every year and for the longest time, as much as I admired Bernie, he was a mess personally. He had plenty on his plate and to be honest, he wasn't really capable of doing a good job with his circumstances.
Having said that, recently, Bernie has gone through some kind of transformation. I read about it, but to be honest, I thought it was one of those fly by night kinda things and didn't pay a lot of attention to it.
But last night, he sounded lucid and sober. To me, it seems as if he's finally got his act back together. I'm happy for him.
I wish him well, but I have doubts that he's really needed here. I wish there was a place for him.. But I don't think there is.
it's kinda funny, last night during the time where donovan was interviewing Jim Brown. Jimmy Dononvan mentioned that the two times the Browns were really always in contention were during the Jim Brown years and the Bernie Kosar years and essentially, that's correct. Those were probably the most electric times for the Browns.
There's a place for Jim Brown and you have to ask, why not Bernie now that he seems to be a lot better.
Just my 2 cents

to be honest, Bernie annoyed me last night. Constant ridicule of EVERY SINGLE PLAY. oh well the defense is doing this he shouldn't have gone where he did etc...it was the first preseason game for christ sakes. Loved Bernie as a player but last night he annoyed me.

I would also add one thing ....... and this is NOT to say that Bernie isn't a very smart man, or anything like that ..... even if someone takes a small part of my reply to make it look that way ....... however just to play devil's advocate ........
Bernie is sitting up in a booth, from which he can easily see the entire defense, He can see every player easily, and with absolutely no pressure. Further, as Bernie said during the game, these are fairly simple pressure packages. Combine the 2 factors, and an experienced QB should be able to pick out stuff like Bernie does. Bernie's a very bright guy, but he has never been given an official coaching spot, and there has to be a reason why.

that's funny, my friends and I were discussing the game this morning over coffee and the exact opposite opinion of Bernie surfaced. In fact, most thought he sounded way better than he has in years.
As for him picking on things, I didn't hear that much of it and it was warranted when I did so I'm going to respectfully disagree with ya.

Bernie has that talent where he can see a defense and just know what they were doing. It was the only reason he was as good of a QB that he was. He didn't have the physical attributes that an Elway had, it was mainly QB smarts.
But that might be hard to teach or perhaps Bernie just isn't a great teacher. But right now Norv Turner is our OC and he has a plan and the credentials to do that job. Bernie isn't needed in that capacity and it would be stepping on Norv's toes.
I would of loved to see that when Pat was here, but Pat thought he was an offensive genius so he would of never allowed that. Heck he was forced to bring in Childress who was OC in name only.

People at work this morning was saying things that leadtheway was saying, I love hearing Bernie break down the play before it happens. I totally disagree with them, I want to hear more Bernie. His voice may sound annoying but the substance he talks about is great IMO.

So then why is Rich Gannon so awful?
I think Bernie is fine where he is.
He does sound a ton better these days. Apparently he has been working with some doctor who is trying to break ground with patients that have a history of multiple concussions.
I think he should have a role as an ambassador. Probably not a bad guy to have around for Weeden or any other QB to pick their brain.
The Dan LeBatard article on Bernie a few years back was eye opening. Everything he's been through. Crazy. The guy draws up plays on napkins at the breakfast table.
I have just always thought the whole "Bernie getting a coaching role" was something that both sides mutally agreed on not doing.
His family is also down in FL, and that probably has a ton to do with it.
Oh I agree, listening to bernie when he talks offense is usually something cool to listen to, and for the most part all the years that he's been doing preseason games I've enjoyed listening to him make blunt observations. Just something last night seemed like he was being more negative than usual, probably because most of the time announcers try to be unbiased and just point out thing neg/pos for both teams..not bernie, he absolutely demolished the Rams qb/wrs,,lol

Honestly, I think the difference is, he is sober and he called it as he saw it instead of being PC.. JMO however

"It's the first preseason game, first play I would have a hard time handing the ball off right here" -Bernie last night before the first play from scrimmage.
I was able to get onto the field last season with my son (who's sick) and Bernie showed up. Not only was he mobbed by adoring fans, but even Hassie/Heckert/Banner were bringing him around like he WAS an ambassador.
It seems like it's just a formality away from happening but continues to not happen.
I've always been a huge Berner fan but the way he dropped everything and focused on my son (which was not scheduled or anything) for a good 10 minutes made me an even bigger fan. This was with throngs of fans surrounding him. Sweetheart of a guy and a true Browns legend - every bit as much as Jim Brown if you asked me.
He does seem to have his act together moreso than in previous years and thus this eddition of the anual "Hire Bernie" thread.
Quote: to be honest, Bernie annoyed me last night.
Ditto ! Does he get paid for every time he mentions The U ? I give a ratts behind about who went to and how they played for The U ! Not to mention his delivery which is mind numbing awful . As to why JB has a job with the organization and Bernie does not .... Hall of Famer vs what was once a good qb .
I've said it all along, Bernie can read the defenses (although yes, preseason the looks and etc aren't that exotic, but I still think he'd be a good help. probably more of an educational/helpful aspect that what Jim Brown can provide to the team.

Of course sitting in a booth as you describe is very much like watching film. Just because he brought to our attention that those were fairly simple pressure packages last night doesn't say that his own knowledge is limited to those.
He doesn't have to coach. Maybe he doesn't want to or maybe he's not a "coaching-type". Not everybody is even if some want them to be.
I posted a link on here the other day, I forget which thread, that talked about Bernie watching film with the QB's and Chud several days a week back in 2007. Not a bad year for DA. I'm not saying Bernie was responsible for that, but he sure didn't hurt.
He is not without value.
However, his medical issues he's been struggling with just may keep him from committing to even a consultant role. He's been getting treatment for his concussion issues which has included diet, exercise and IV's of certain minerals, etc. Apparently it has greatly helped him to the degree that other former players have inquired into the method of this treatment. He talked a bit about this last night.
It's hard to say he's progressed enough yet to get involved but no doubt his knowledge of the game and of reading defenses and coverages could be a huge asset to our QB's. As stated he did this with the team in 2007 with Chud. So if Chud feels he could use Bernie's assistance again I'm sure he'll ask if he hasn't already done so.
I watched an interview with Bernie somewhere on youtube a few days ago. He was definitely a hired consultant when *Mangini was here. He said it is best to not go into detail when you are a consultant for a team if you want to keep getting hired. It is possible he has been a consultant since then or is now and just isn't talking about it.
I don't think Bernie is the worlds greatest OC candidate but being a fan myself I like the idea of hiring legacies. I love the Chud hire partially due to his homegrown roots. Same with Quinn had he worked out, I want as many talented staff members and players with Browns loyalty/roots as possible.
Multi-part interview with Bernie where he mentions being a hired consultant and the value of not mentioning it publically:
I'm pretty sure he has some gig with the Browns already. They brought up how he hadn't been on WKNR recently and Rizzo mentioned about Bernie being under contract with the the Browns.
Quote: ..during the time where donovan was interviewing Jim Brown. Jimmy Dononvan mentioned that the two times the Browns were really always in contention were during the Jim Brown years and the Bernie Kosar years and essentially, that's correct.
Ah, the Kardiac kids with Brian Sipe...? How soon they forget!!

dubia, quoting your whole post because of the excellent info about concussions..
I think Bernies best asset is when he calls several plays well in advance, ala the Marino play for a TD when Marino faked the kneel-down.
I think he can put a bug in Chud's ear every now and again-chud's a listener-not a lot of "bad" ego.
Other than that, i like him where he is, although last year i would definitely preferred him to coach "punt from the 50 yrd line"
It's neat listening to Bernie pointing out coverages and defensive alignments. However, his negativity was really annoying the other night. He criticized almost everyone. He did sound more coherent than normal, though.
I would not like him as an offensive coach. tab was joking, but the guy really would wanna take shots down the field on almost every play. I think the Browns are treating him fine.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher has ‘lost a lot of respect’ for Browns TV broadcaster Bernie Kosar -
BEREA — Rams coach Jeff Fisher believes Bernie Kosar crossed the line. Then kept crossing it. “I lost a lot of respect for him,” Fisher said Saturday. Kosar was in his usual role Thursday night as preseason analyst on WKYC-TV’s broadcast of the opener between the Browns and Rams. He was critical of many things about the Rams, but saved his most pointed comments for third-string quarterback Kellen Clemens. “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned,” Kosar said. “I have to watch him the whole fourth quarter.” Fisher wasn’t amused. “First off, let me say this, the Cleveland Brown organization is a first-class organization from top to bottom and it has been that for years and years and years,” Fisher said. “I guess I’m a little disappointed — I feel bad for them — that they had someone doing the broadcast feel the need to speak that way about players, specifically on our team, and coaches for that matter. “I’m just surprised that Bernie has such a lack of respect for players and for this game. So, to be honest with you, I lost a lot of respect for him. This game is a preseason game, players are playing hard. It’s highly unlikely that he knew anything about our football team but felt the need to make those comments. I don’t think they were justified.” Kosar played quarterback for the Browns from 1985-93 and remains one of the most popular players in team history. He called the Rams receivers “horrible,” said their parents would be “embarrassed” if watching and said veteran receivers coach Ray Sherman wasn’t doing a good job. Kosar seemed to base much of his criticism of Clemens on a preseason game years ago in which he struggled for the Jets. “Again, Bernie’s got his issues — they’re well documented,” Fisher said. “Kellen played well. He played hard and made plays.”
Clemons went 6-13 with a pair of INT, and 1 TD ..... against the bottom of the Browns roster.
The Rams receivers had trouble holding onto the ball, and that's when Kosar lambasted them. They dropped several quite catchable balls. Fisher may not like it, but he probably said the same stuff when he watched the tape.
If you don't want people to say bad things about you, don't suck. That's pretty easy.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
Yeah, it's not like we haven't had to suffer the media's putdowns all across our roster because we've been sucking.
That's the reason I put the crying baby up. Fisher needs to know that if parts of your team suck badly it's going to be in the media. Bernie was just in the position to have the opportunity be the first to it.
Will Fisher make the same, "lost respect for" comments once the rest of the media point out his team's failures?
I do like when announcers point out negatives, but Bernie was beyond ridiculous. He bashed almost everything that was done out there. His constant negativity was annoying. And he wouldn't let anything go. Over and over and over. Bernie gets on guys because they don't "take a shot down the field" on every freaking play.
I know I am in the minority, but I don't care for him as an announcer. I do like how he points up how the defenses are lining up and aligning their coverages, but his constant negativity and delivery irritate me.
And the comments about the WRs was tasteless. He was going on and on about how horrible they were. Donovan says something about if their parents were watching and he says they should be embarrassed. Are you kidding me? Juvenile and cruel. All games air on NFL Network these days. He has to know that. That means all those parents did indeed see the game and hear his harsh remarks.
And I really don't think Fisher was crying. He was sticking up for his players.
Hmm,, constant negativity and annoying in the same sentence? Imagine that!
Honestly, I think Bernie saw the same thing we all saw, Clemens didn't play well. I suppose he could have been a little more PC about it, but then the "Let's keep it real" crowd would have knocked him for that.. No win situation
I say let's take him out back to the woodshed

I don't see any scenario whatsoever where someone would knock Bernie for acting professional. Not sure where you came up with that.
And on the whole...there's a lot of hilarity in this. Any national writer or pundit who states that the Browns are terrible brings all sorts of whining and bellyaching out of the woodwork. Could you imagine the outcry on these boards if a Rams announcer trashed Weeden like that?
I usually enjoy Bernie as a commentator on these preseason games, but I ran through the game again paying half attention or so last night. Bernie did seem to grab hold of things he found interesting/amusing, and was unwilling to let them go. I really got tired of hearing about "the U".
As far as Fisher .....boo hoo.
He whines about Kosar talking about his guys, then he throws up everything that's ever gone wrong in Kosar's life. It was like a little kid going "Oh yeah!?!? Well what about when you ....???" Kinda immature on his part too.
NFL writer Chris Wesseling, who wrote an article about the whole situation, was rather immature too. He ended with : "In the buttoned-up NFL world of the 21st century, we're surprised the Browns would allow an admittedly immature, marble-mouthed loose cannon in their broadcast booth even for preseason games."
No one covered themselves in glory with regards to this whole situation. A lot of people played "Look at how bad that *&^$$^&*) is for calling names ....."
