A judge in Tennessee changed a 7-month-old boy's name to Martin from Messiah, saying the religious name was earned by one person and "that one person is Jesus Christ."

Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew ordered the name change last week, according to WBIR-TV (http://on.wbir.com/1cDOeTY). The boy's parents were in court because they could not agree on the child's last name, but when the judge heard the boy's first name, she ordered it changed, too.

"It could put him at odds with a lot of people and at this point he has had no choice in what his name is," Ballew said.

It was the first time she ordered a first name change, the judge said.

Messiah was No. 4 among the fastest-rising baby names in 2012, according to the Social Security Administration's annual list of popular baby names.

The judge in eastern Tennessee said the baby was to be named Martin DeShawn McCullough, which includes both parents' last name.

The boy's mother, Jaleesa Martin, of Newport, said she will appeal. She says Messiah is unique and she liked how it sounded alongside the boy's two siblings — Micah and Mason.

"Everybody believes what they want so I think I should be able to name my child what I want to name him, not someone else," Martin said.

Ballew said the name Messiah could cause problems if the child grows up in Cocke County, which has a large Christian population.

"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," the judge said.

Naming your child Messiah is absurd, and I completely agree with you.

I agree with the judge on this;

saying the religious name was earned by one person and "that one person is Jesus Christ."

but i don't think the judge should be able to say what a person can name their child.

If the child promptly turned water into wine, then I think that the judge would have to reconsider.....

Judge is clearly out of line (especially considering how popular the name Jesus is)

If I remember correctly there is a kid out there with the name adolph hitler who's birthday cake caused some media derision.

But the general rule is that the courts have no right to dictate names without parental consent. Seems like a very odd move by a judge that will likely tarnish his career. Knowledge and application of the law regardless of personal beliefs is his job description. (or its rough approximate)

I just call it judicial activism. I hate putting conservative or liberal monikers on it.

Judge should have no say in the matter, but as far as the name, it's just asking for trouble down the line.

I mean, if we become a Muslim nation in the future, he won't be able to get work.

I don't normally care what people name their kids ..... but they really should stop and think about how those kids will be treated down the road because of their parents' naming choices.

However, Moon Unit and Dweezil are doing OK do far as I know ........

Oh, and Frank Zappa was a conservative too ...... believing in smaller government and lower taxes.

That said, the court really had no place in such a decision. I'm not sure what law or right the judge thought she was protecting ..... but I can't think of one.

No, they are Jesus (Hay-Soos)

We have a Hispanic guy works here, his name is Jorge (Hor-Hay), and I pronounce it as he told it to me, so why can't he call me Timm instead of Team?

LOL Yes, that's what I was thinking, Hay Soos! But given that it's spelled Jesus, how does the judge figure that one out?

TEAM? Now that right there was funny

Lu Ann is an absurd name. This overreaching judge should be forced to change her own now.

Like most of the posts I've seen, I think naming your child Messiah is pretty stupid but the judge shouldn't be able to change it.

I would hope that this woman eventually loses her job over this, but I doubt it.

Religious folks need to accept that a great deal of their beliefs are illogical and irrational. That doesn't mean they shouldn't have those views, or that it's wrong to have them, but they shouldn't interject them into the lives of others.

I'm not a religious person in the traditional sense, but I have similar instances in my own life, namely the Browns. I've made people take breaks on road trips so I could watch games, but I try my best to keep that stuff out of their lives as best I can.

"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," the judge said"

The name "Messiah" is Hebrew. It means the "anointed one". Not everyone believes Jesus was the Messiah, including the Hebrews (Jews). It's not a title, it's a proper name. This judge is ruling bias on christian beliefs and religion, not on the merit of equality guided by the written law. She should be removed from the bench immediatly.

For as extreme the suggestion may seem at first glance, this IS the most accurate analysis so far, and being that she has set down a ruling based on something outside the law, namely her religious belief system - and thus asserting her religion on others - I would have to agree that she should be removed from the bench immediately.

Agreed.

Then, one has to wonder how soon it will be before someone stands up shouting "Christians are under attack!" -and a whole group of activists start holding protests....

...you just know it will happen....

I'd give it about 2 hours, tops, before the backlash began, and hopefully the powers that be would have the fortitude to tell those shouting about it to shut the heck up because they're wrong.

Dawg, you know me better than that...

Mine is primarily a statement about basic human nature. Of course they won't speak for all Christians but they will speak. Bank that.

PETA, Concerned Moms For Better School Lunches, Gays For The Metric System, Outraged Christians.... they're all the same- led by the same personality types.

Just another advocacy group for me to ignore (or ridicule...)
