It's available for download today, I'll be doing that tonight after work. Has anybody played it yet? If so, thoughts?

Just checked it out. Personally I think it sucks. I don't see a difference between this and last years. If anything the animations are worse. First time since 2001 that I will not be buying it.

It's ok. Graphics are good, and I'm glad they have an interactive tutorial so that newer players can know how to play, and also current players can brush up on some of the new features.
Like NCAA, I'll probably buy at some point down the road when it's below 40 bucks.

I'll get it, it seemed like it was pretty much the same as last year's (like usual) and I liked last year's. I must say, though, as a fan of Thunderstruck by AC/DC, this game might make me hate it. I must have heard it played 30 times between the two games I played on the demo. I don't understand why they won't let us use our own custom soundtracks like in their NCAA Football and NHL games.

Different teams. Madden's team has always been behind the times. You know, like not using freaking auto save when the rest of the gaming world is using freaking auto save.
Speaking of NHL, that actually sounds like it's going to be a must-buy for me this year. I love hockey, but if you think Madden was bad with not working hard, the folks who make the NHL series have taken the same game from the last 5-6 years and just slapped a new cover on it with updated rosters..
This year it seems like they have gone the route of NBA 2k with the be a pro being more fun with off the ice stuff...
And seriously, get Gary Thorne off the broadcast, the guy hasn't done NHL hockey in freaking 10 years. Get Doc and Edzo on there.

I am actually still playing Madden 12 with newly updated rosters. I thought '13 took a step back with franchise so that's why I didn't buy it. Also I know during the initial release of '13 there was some issue with playing multiplayer offline. Does anyone know if EA actually heard the mass amounts of people who hated what they did to franchise? Will there be any improvements to that area of the game? The first thing I do is like to get my rosters as accurate to real life as possible and then start my franchise and go from there.

What do you mean by get your rosters as accurate as real life? Meaning guys on the right teams, or actually editing players for stats?
My contact at EA lost his job a few months ago, so I no longer have an in with them. He actually did work with Madden, but was not officially part of Tiburon.

Owner mode looks like it will finally be how it was on PS2 and Xbox. You can set the prices for concessions, parking, etc. You can can fire/hire coaches and GMs. Finally, we can once again import players from NCAA Football 14 into our franchise modes. Oh, also, community sharing is FINALLY enabled. We can all share our custom rosters (that can be used in franchise mode), sliders, and whatever else we can customize on a central Madden server like what's available in games like NBA 2K and MLB The Show.
I'll end up acting as the Browns owner more than I'll actually play games on the field like usual. Only this year, it will be much more entertaining with a lot more involvement.

I have to admit, that I liked '13 a lot with the new interface, I missed the old system of how you scouted players.
I don't know for sure, but doesn't 12 use random generated players, while '13 sticks with the same guys, so essentially you could cheat if you really put the work in? can anyone confirm that?

I have heard that they retooled franchise and brought back owner mode to allow you to control stadium renovations, ticket prices, concessions, fan experience, etc. Also allowed to fully edit players positions, attributes, uniforms, etc. This may be enough to make me want to buy the game. I always liked having control of the franchise right down to the small details. To some that part might be boring but I thought it was awesome.

This is the last year for the exclusive deal with EA. Of course, I'm sure they'll renew it for another 10 years. Here's to hoping that doesn't happen.

That game sucked, but I agree.
Bring it back just so EA has some competition and it puts the pressure on them to put out a better product.

Not sure if I was clear... EA has agreements with the NFL and with the NFLPA. The deal with the NFL is about to expire, but the deal with the NFLPA is not. There will not be a game to compete with Madden if it does not have real player likenesses.

Wait, what? That sucks. I thought we had the opportunity for a few different NFL games next year. You're right, nobody would make a NFL game without the actual NFL players. That would just be...odd.

Never understood the giant tent everyone pitched for that game.
Madden 2006 > NFL 2k5.
The thing I missed about Madden 2006 was the passing cone. It allowed you to turn the quarterbacks head and throw off DB's. My cousin told me that it got a lot of negative feed back but I thought it was pretty realistic. Better quarterbacks had a bigger window of vision vs younger/worse QB's.

It got a lot of negative feedback because it was "too hard" Average Madden players couldn't use it. But that's fine, you were able to turn it off. Pretty typical, people complaining about something you don't have to use

I loved the passing cone. It actually put some semblance of reasoning into different outcomes for different QBs, and made the pump fake button make sense.
It was a little dishonest, though, as you personally could still see whatever part of the screen you wanted to.

But if you remember, your QB's accuracy was AWFUL if you tried throwing to a receiver outside of the cone.

Second part of your post was true, and cosmetically it made the game look bad.
I am in agreement with everyone else, I love Madden, but competition is always healthy, and they should just take the 2k basketball team and let them work with the NFL.

I love 2K5 and still play it from time to time with updated rosters. The presentation is still better than what Madden delivers, plus the line of scrimmage interaction was MUCH better than what Madden has today. There weren't robo QBs like in Madden, and the physics were better than what Madden was serving up until last year. 2K5 is still a very good game, but, it seems that Madden is finally catching up to it in many ways. The presentation of 2K5 (game intros, halftime show with video highlights, weekly SportsCenter with video highlights from around the league and player-specific commentary from Trey Wingo, draft previews/reviews from Mel Kiper, etc.) still obliterates what Madden offers in terms of a broadcast presentation.
Both games are good at this point, I just wonder what a 2K football game could have been today if it had continued to be produced over the past 9 years alongside Madden. We could have had a truly stunning gaming experience if the NFL hadn't gone the exclusive rights route. Nonetheless, I'll be downloading Madden 25 after work today and enjoying every minute of it. God, I love football.

You guys are crazy, NFL2K5 is the best football game ever made, hands down. Might as well try and tell me that Friends is better than Seinfeld.

You left out the actual gameplay was better. Madden gets so arcadey and you can't totally dominate other players like you could in NFL2K. In madden the scores are always 37-35, 42-38 etc.. Even if you get up 2 TDs the computer just throws in BS and allows the other team to come back. In NFL2K5 there wasn't a handicap feature, start getting worked by your buddy? Too bad. Annoys me to no end when I'm dominating in Madden then all of a sudden Shon Greene turns into Barry Sanders and can't be touched on his way to a 85 yd TD run. Or Joe Haden all of a sudden starts to suck and TJ Ward isn't there to back up the way he should. Or all of a sudden the opposiign LBer jumps 30 ft in the air for a INT. Total crap.

If NFL2k5 had up to date rosters on the PS3 I would probably be playing that. Unfortunately there are no current rosters up on the operation sports forums for after the draft. Maybe someone will make them eventually.
I just played the demo this morning and it was interesting. Considering I didn't play 2013 I thought the blocking for the running game seemed to be better but other things that were bad (the camera angle in the demo was atrocious). Overall I am still on the fence about buying the game but a lot of guys over at the operation sports forums already have the game. It helps to look at their opinions and feedback as well.

I got it on Friday after work and played it all weekend. Luckily, you can change the camera angle back to the usual one. The game isn't too bad, it's probably about what you'd expect if you've played the last two or three. There are little changes to gameplay and physics that are more noticeable when you're playing rather than if you were watching gameplay videos. It "feels" better, if that makes sense. The presentation is still awful and bare-bones, aside from game intros for primetime games. For night games, there is a little video introduction for each team with a narrator commenting on each. The tone of his voice sounds very battle ready in a non-cheesy manner. When compared to games like NBK13, there is no comparison when it comes to feeling like an actual TV broadcast. Madden 25 leaves a lot to be desired, like always.
Unfortunately, imported players from NCAA Football 14 come with some awkward appearance settings, such as giant Voltron shoulder pads (not quite as bad as in Madden 12) or the old helmets with no facemasks. Of course, you can go in and edit the equipment for each player to fix this, but you don't know who will look ridiculous on the field with these stupid equipment settings until you're playing against them. I always edit the guys I draft, but the rest of the league will have some strange looking players on the field. I'm sure this will be patched. But, in the meantime, you'll be playing against wacky characters.
Owner mode is finally back and seemingly more involved than what we remember of it from last-gen consoles. It seems that we are in control of more items and their pricing, such as player-specific jerseys for the most popular players on your team. Richardson, Haden, Kruger, and Weeden were the top jersey sellers in the first year of my Browns franchise.
The draft is unbalanced. For example, 11 QBs were drafted in the first round of my first draft. That sucked. In the second draft, the Packers were drafting Bridgewater first overall, even though they have Rodgers. I finally switched to control the Packers to make them accept my trade offer of two 1st round picks and a 2nd round so that I could draft Bridgewater first overall. Still, you see what I'm talking about.
The game is enjoyable both on and off the field with quirks here and there like always with Madden games. If you bought last year's version, it may not be worth $60 to you. But, if you've taken a couple of years off from it, it will probably be a welcome change. Me, I buy it every year because I need my NFL gaming fix. I can't help it and admit it.

I'm actually impressed with the NHL '14 demo. Looks like they polished up a few things that made the game annoying. I still hate that Gary Thorne and Bill Clement are the announcers. They haven't called NHL hockey in 10 years.
The game has a little better feel to it. They also offer some cool options for gameplay too.
My cousin got his job back at EA, and I'm hoping he could send a few of these my way.

I'm glad to hear that. I downloaded the demo, but haven't played it yet. I enjoyed NHL '13 enough to probably give '14 a shot. I might wait until there is a sale, though.

Yeah I haven't gotten it in a few years. I think '11 was the last one I got. It seems like they have added a few dimensions to the be a pro mode. Off the ice decisions, etc.. can add to your character. Probably similar to NBA 2k's career mode.

Long Live 2K...better than Madden ever was, and it this point it seems, ever will be. It took 10 years for them to almost catch up...for example, it took several years for them to finally say "hey, I've never seen a real QB drop back 30 yards, and throw a 60 yard strike off his back foot, maybe our game shouldn't either"

Now I didn't purchase madden 13 so my opinion on this may be different from other people, but so far I'm liking the game. The gameplay/framerate seems pretty smooth, UI is fast, and the mini camp like modes help you get used to the new moves that added to the game. Also I like the fact that in training you get a bronze, silver, or gold medal like it used to be back in the early additions of madden. I haven't played owner mode yet but so far I like what I see. Does anyone know how to take control of all 32 teams? Do I need to do anything special for that?
