Completely agree. I think that is what we [Brown's fans] all want.

For those of you who are still trying to blame either Banner, Chud, or Lombardi..........do any of you think Weeden has shown anything in his brief career to warrant unequivocal support?

I'd say Weeden should feel fortunate that he is getting this chance. To his credit, he is working much harder this year. Like GameBreaker says...........we all hope he ends up being the real deal. However, the Browns would be complete morons to not have serious questions about his future.

He's getting a shot. No blame should be assigned.

IF, and I say IF, the leak is coming from the FO, then this could very easily undermine Weeden's confidence, his feeling of belonging, and negatively impact his on-field performance. Good grief, you just don't do this nonsense; it's juvenile. And no, he didn't show a lot last season, except potential. He is on the second year of the learning curve and must show at least normal progression...

Come on!!! Be real!!!

Why the hell would the anyone associated w/the Browns deliberately try and sabotage Weeden's play? That makes no freaking sense.

You do realize that if he plays poorly it will translate into more losses right. And more losses will hurt the careers of those who are in charge. Do you REALLY think they want to lose?

The blind hatred from some of you towards our new regime is insane. What do any of those guys have to gain if Weeden fails? I can't believe I am really having to explain this.

this is why I like Banner. No sugar coating here. He bluntly pointed out that they are going to give him some regular season games and see what happens.

I like it. He is pretty much telling Weeden, this is it, produce or you are done. They are giving him a chance, but after hearing Chud and Banner, I think the rope is short. Campbell is a viable alternative, and I think that is why he is here.

No matter what Cleveland Browns' coaches say, the starting quarterback job belongs to Brandon Weeden: Terry Pluto | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf..._special-report

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Talking to myself about the Browns talking about quarterbacks ...

Question: Do you really think it's "still close" between Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell when it comes to starting?

Answer:: No.

Q:: No?

A: No. As in ... NO!

Q: So why would coach Rob Chudzinski say, "I think it's still close and we're finding out every game, and these games are important opportunities for guys to show what they can do"?

A: Remember that this new front office and coaching staff believes the players drafted by the previous front office were handed starting jobs without having to earn them. They believe a sense of "entitlement" had hit a few players. I heard the "entitlement" word from more than one Browns operative almost from the moment that they took over.

Q: But maybe there is a competition between Weeden and Campbell?

A: It's Weeden's job. He has been playing with the starters since the opening day of minicamps in the spring, and nothing has changed. Every snap that he's taken has been with the starters. The offense is being designed to bring the best out of Weeden. In my interview with Joe Banner, the Browns CEO said the coaching staff had major influence in the decision not to draft a quarterback and stay with Weeden for another year.

Q: Wasn't that because it was a weak quarterback draft?

A: Certainly that was a factor. But if they absolutely hated Weeden, they could have drafted anyone from E.J. Manuel (No. 16, Bills) to Geno Smith (second round, Jets) to Mike Glennon (third round, Bucs) to Matt Barkley (fourth round, Eagles). In some cases, they would have had to make trades -- but if they really wanted a quarterback in the draft, they would have found a way to pick one.

Q: So why not just say Weeden is the guy?

A: Fair or not, Weeden had the reputation of not working as hard off the field (film study, etc.) as some coaches would like. I never could confirm if that happened to be true, or it was just a label. This coaching staff has been pleased with his work ethic, but I do think they want to keep the pressure on him -- and other young players.

Q: Does Campbell has an outside shot of winning the job?

A: It would take a major collapse by Weeden, both in terms of preparation and preseason performance. Campbell has started in the NFL, he was 11-7 in 2010-11 with Oakland. He's a backup, but a backup good enough to lead a team for a season and do a decent job. The Browns want to see if -- at the very least -- Weeden can be better than that.

Q: So why did Chudzinski say, "The plan is to find the right guy. At whatever point is the right time to do that, we'll name a starter."?

A: Because he's the coach and that's how he wants to handle it. But along with offensive coordinator Norv Turner, Chudzinski was the strongest voice in giving Weeden another chance this season. Chudzinski likes quarterbacks with strong arms, and Weeden has that.

Q: Why are there all the reports that the Browns "aren't sold" on Weeden?

A: It's annoying when a national media outlet says that, as if it's news. Banner has said as much going back before the draft. They like some things about Weeden. They think he's talented enough to earn a chance to play. But he has a lot to prove on the field. Why should they be "sold" on him as a long-term answer at quarterback? He didn't show enough to do that in his first season.

Q: Do you agree with how the Browns are handling this?

A: I agree with Banner. Let's see what Weeden does under these coaches and in the new offense. It was extremely promising in the first preseason game, where he was 10-of-13 for 112 yards and a touchdown. Ten of the 13 attempts came out of the shotgun, his strength. Last year, it was only 43 percent. He seemed comfortable in the new offense.

Q: Do you think the coaches agree?

A: Yes.

Q: So the quarterback competition is ...

A: Let's get real with the Weeden vs. Campbell talk. Campbell is a backup. They want Weeden to be a starter and win some games. Campbell plays only if Weeden is A) Hurt. B) Awful.

Q: What do you think will happen at quarterback?

A: I really don't know. Like the Browns, I'm upbeat about what I've seen from Weeden so far. But we're talking some practices and barely one quarter of a preseason game. He may play the first half against Detroit on Thursday.

Q: Will another good game lead Chudzinski to name him the starter?

A: He is the starter. The real question is not what is said in August, it's how Weeden plays when the games count in September. He has to prove he can handle the pressure of opposing defenses and the emotional demands of being a starting NFL quarterback. Those questions can't be answered until later.

Totally agree with you. Any leak, particularly from the FO (which I doubt), could be detrimental to the teams success. Perhaps the "janitor" overheard an impromptu conversation; I don't pretend to know...

Pluto's article says it all. I agree with this article more than anything I've read from Pluto before. AND - I like the way Chud and Banner are handling the situation ... if the rap on Weeden was that he maybe was handed the starting role too easily, this sends a clear message.

It's only preseason but I am looking forward to seeing more progress from Weeden tonight.

I read that this morning and came away with the feeling that Pluto nailed it. Most reasonable explaination on the topic so far.

they wouldn't.. so this "article" is absurd.

When I read it , it seems to me that the writer has a bone to pick with the FO / coaching staff for whatever reason, it seems like an agenda article or as is usual for the press, a quick way to fill a "column" without doing much, if any work.

Take a quote from who knows how long ago, throw in an unnamed source to add credibility and bingo done for the day.

As you know each individual player is motivated differently. Some are motivated by praise, some by encouragement, some by getting their asses chewed out. Whatever it takes to bring out the best in a player.

The team may feel that from a personality/motivation standpoint that to give Weeden unbridled support would cause him to "relax" thinking that he is "there" and has "it".

Their lack of proclaiming him the starter and lack of public praise could simply be their way of keeping him working hard to keep his job.

Did that make sense?

I realize that Weeden has shown little to make everyone sure that he is "the guy" so to deal with him both privately and publicly in a manner that is consistent with the way they think they can motivate him to be his best makes sense to me.

Personally I am reluctant to think he's our future. But have no problem with the way the FO and staff are treating this. It could be just what Weeden needs. They know him much better on a personal level than we do.

So after I posted this I go back to read the rest of the posts and then read the Pluto article YTown posted and saw this...

Same thing I was saying I believe.

Weeden needs someone on his ass and that's the purpose of why they are handling this the way they are. It may even explain the "leak" that they are not sold on him. If Weeden reads those articles it's just more reason for him to work harder.

I also agree that this regime needs to wipe out the sense of entitlement some of our players have. When the team is so young a lot of the starters are starters by default, without really earning it. Weeden is one of them. There are others. It's not their fault but it is their fault if they don't recognize the circumstances and the situation and start to believe that they are starters because they are so damn good at what they do.

There has to be competition. In the case there is no competition then anything the staff can do to put a player's starting position in question can serve as motivation to work harder.

Yes it does. Different people respond differently to different motivators. i don't know what pushes Weeden's buttons, but this type of motivator seems the least likely way to work...

At the risk of setting Vers off on one of his rants I have to say that I can easily see Lombardi spreading doubts about Weeden or any player he previously didn't like in his TV gig. Of course, IF he is doing this I would also assume it was with Banner's tacit approval.

So far I believe the FO is doing a pretty good job. But nothing that I've seen, heard or read about the operations of an NFL franchise would tell me that any backstage manipulations like this are unheard of. I mean, it's taken as Gospel around here by most posters that everyone Holmgren hired, right down to the building janitor, was because they shared an agent. But it strains credibility that someone in this FO trying to solidify their credentials would spread rumors about a player that they didn't pick?

Anyway, it all goes away if Weeden performs. The jury will be out on that verdict for at least a month.

Chud said that the QB battle is "still close."

Yeah I read that. The BOZOS were trying to get Chud to name Weeden Officially as the starter he said all along that the competition would go on till Preseason game 3 or perhaps 4. But if this is a true competition. I find it to be the ODDEST competition EVER!!!! as in One has gotten ALL THE REPS with the STARTERS. The other with the 2nd unit. And Weeden had a darn good game.

Oh and here we are Preseason game #2 and Chud/Norv are contemplating to play the starters for the entire half (usually a game 3 thing) and still Weeden is stated as the starter and getting all the reps with the Starters.

But because Chud refused to Cow Tow to naming the starter the national BOZOS are taking his statement as the Competition is still on going to be INFO TO THEM THAT We don't like him and Campbell has a good shot at starting...lol just a funny way of showing that. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS!

WEEDEN GETS ALL THE SNAPS WITH STARTERS...CAMPBELL WITH 2ND TEAMS.

Some times it is that simple.

It's not about whether or not Weeden has been named the starter.

We all know he's starting.

I'm not too high on the article, as it's not all that well written and it lacks substance, but where there's smoke...

I can't remember the last time a new regime came in and was so blase about their starting QB. Usually they at least talk the talk, even if they're not that high on the guy. It's pretty clear this regime doesn't think all that highly of him.

Which doesn't bother me much, as I'm not that high on him, either. I do give them credit for giving him his shot and not moving on just to move on, but I don't see a lot of love for the guy.

Love how you can see this so Clearly...lol

I know coming in Lombardi was not too high on him - but I think most of that was regarding the PICK and him just not the best QB for the system and he was correct in describing it as Desperate.

As far as NOT HIGH ON HIM...Chud n Norv said they would compete for the starter until around week 3 or 4. And yet I see no competition WHAT SO EVER. But if you want to believe everything wrong happens in Cleveland go right ahead. I've said all along due to his age we still have to draft a FRANCHISE QB if we have he opportunity cause who knows when that opportunity will come up. 2014,15,16??? When ever it comes even if Weeden is doing great...we have to pull the trigger. I think that is just COMMON SENSE. It doesn't mean we have evaluated Weeden now and he just ain't going to cut it. But that's ok...too each their own...lol

I'm just saying I AIN'T BUYING IT!

I don't know about "easily", and I really would be very surprised it indeed the rumors were coming out of the FO, but if so, then the obvious candidate would be Lombardi. I certainly hope that this is not the case...

Once again - naming him the starter or not naming him the starter aren't really what I'm talking about.

Giving a guy all the reps with the #1's doesn't equal praise.

Weeden will be the starter this year. That's not really a question.

Also, once again - IMO, there's nothing 'wrong' with the idea that our FO doesn't like Weeden. I don't think the guy's going to pan out, either. As I said, I think they're handling the situation pretty well.

It's not 'doom and gloom' to say that Weeden doesn't look like an NFL starting QB.

I don't see much effusive praise for the guy.

Much of the off-season has been Banner pushing buttons on certain players he felt needed pushed, and he specifically said that the QB needs to be pushed to the breaking point so that pressure in game situations is mild by comparison. It's an old school approach ...... push a player relentlessly so that he either becomes the best he can be ...... or he breaks and you know before you count on him to a large degree. I see this stuff as absolutely consistent, and not a big deal. Either Weeden does everything he is supposed to do, (which, by reports, he has) or he is dumped overboard. It's similar to what Mangini and Daboll did with McCoy because they felt that he needed to be toughened up, and needed to lose the sense of entitlement he had ..... but, of course, they were lambasted by fans for pressuring McCoy to the nth degree, and even being abusive towards him.

The NFL is a pretty brutal business sometimes. Especially when it comes to the QB position, if you have to constantly try to build a guy up, you are just building up for a letdown. QB is a high pressure position, and the QB takes every bit of the blame for everything that goes wrong. (I remember people blasting Weeden in the Cowboys game last year because when we scored with a minute or so left, we "scored too soon". .... and, of course, as if on cue, we let them score to tie the game, and then allowed them to win it in OT.

I do think in a way that Norv is the "good cop" to a lot of the bad cops in the organization, and I don't think that's by accident either. It pushed Weeden closer to Turner, which can only help him as well.

I think that a lot of "accidental comments" that have come out of the front office have had very specific purposes, like the scenario above.

Normally I would agree with that... but this regime has been pretty guarded in their comments on just about everybody so I'm not all that concerned about it.

Being honest, they inherited an older than usual 2nd year QB who had his ups and downs last year and got outshined by 3 other rookies in a pretty big way.. I'd be guarded too so as not to hook my wagon to somebody like that... Overall I just don't think it's that big of a deal.

One thing I don't understand are these reports of the organization supposedly leaking out that they don't like Weeden, or whatever.

I don't understand the need for it. Why not let the season play out and have a better idea then?. Are they doing this so if he fails, they can say they told you so, and if he succeeds, no harm done because they were just rumors? That seems petty for guys who should have much more important things to do.

I can't buy that it's the Browns doing this. I have to believe this is just assumption from writers because of what Lombardi said while working at the network.

Even with what Lombardi said in front of a camera? Who cares? The guy gave his opinion. It's refreshing! Guess what? He'd probably love to be wrong, so he doesn't have to waste resources on finding the guy. Half the league is looking for that guy. People get fired because they end up not finding that guy and instead pick the wrong one. Brandon Weeden is basically a freebie for this regime.

Again, banner likes to put pressure on players if he feels that they have a sense of entitlement, especially at QB. What better way than an "anonymous leak"?

I don't get that either.

I mean the guy is 30 years old, This isn't some snot-nosed 21 year old hot-shot. The guy has been humbled once already. I think he knows what's at stake. It may be really hard for him to find a job even as a backup if this doesn't work out.

I can't speak for him though. I just know if it were me, I'd know this job is mine to lose considering I am taking all the time with the first team, and my backup is a scrub QB (sorry Toad) who has been floundering around this league for 8 years. I'm not competing with Jason Campbell as much as I am competing with not being with this organization past this season.

Plus, I think he's very level headed. I don't think he needs motivation like that.

It would be a "no-lose" proposition for Lombardi. If he's wrong about that, then it's great for the team. And if he was right, then it confirms what he said on TV.
I do not however, believe this came out of the FO (and NO, I am not a Lombardi hater!)

Things could also be taken out of context. Obviously, it is Very believable that because of his connections with the media, that Lombardi still talks to them, suppose he talks to someone off the record about Weeden and says he's not the biggest fan, or hey "we'll see", that could easily be implied, since you don't have to name your source, as "OMGZ LUMBARDI HATEZ WEEDUN, THE BROWNZ HATE WEEDAN!

Like I said, it's a freebie. it's like throwing a deep ball on an offsides continuation. At the very least, Weeden doing bad this year, gives this organization a year to further look at this roster, and scout the position of QB to see how they want to attack the draft and free agency in 2014, when the heat would really be on to find that QB should it not be Weeden. win/win and you don't need to talk to the media off the record for that.

It's obvious the Browns don't like Weeden because they've made such an effort to replace him. You know, all those rumored trades, and rumored QB's we were going to draft.

Wait...

It's obvious the Browns don't like Weeden because they've made such an effort to replace him. You know, all those rumored trades, and rumored QB's we were going to draft.

Wait...

I don't believe there's a "wait" to it. On the other hand, that's pretty much what they did with the bulk of the offense is "wait".

I think there's a huge difference in "not liking Weeden" and "not being sold on Weeden".

I didn't see anything in his play last year that "sold" anybody on Weeden. We have a lot of youth and second year players that I believe the jury is still out on.

That doesn't mean people or the FO doesn't like them. What it does mean is they haven't gathered enough evidence either way, especially in this new system, to know who they will have to replace and who will stick with the team.

I believe Weeden is in that group. If you don't could you tell me what you saw in weeden last year to make you feel this FO should be "sold on Weeden" at this point? I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, it just seems as though some are taking sides here when I really don't believe there's a side to take.

I guess if you wanna look at it that way, but why write an article about how "they wanna see more"? ... I took this article to mean they don't like Weeden.

If we're talking about teams not being "sold" on their QB, you could write that same thing for probably 15ish teams in the league.

Well, to be fair, he is undefeated and untied against the Steelers.

Yes I think the writer was being over the top. I mean often times they're more interested in what sells, more so than what the news really is.

I just meant on a realistic basis. And I do think you're right that a number of FO's around the league aren't sold on their QB's. As I think is the case here.

My issue is with the person feeding them this information. It could be owner Jimmy Haslam or team president Joe Banner or general manager Mike Lombardi or even Chudzinski. That part of it is immaterial to me. What matters is that someone of authority—because respected national writers wouldn't write such things unless they knew it to be true—has been putting the word out that Weeden wasn't the answer before the guy even took a single snap in a preseason game. To me, that is total garbage.

So who was the writer talking about...who was feeding the national media with information Weeden's Not the Guy?

Maybe this will help answer the question ... and for those who believe no such whisper campaign is going on, note the date of this article after you read it.

QB Is In the Eye of the Beholder
August 2nd, 2013

DraftBrowns Staff Writer, Ryan Alton
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I suppose the same can be said for what makes a promising quarterback in the NFL. Over the past few days, the national media has descended upon Berea to check out the latest incarnation of the Cleveland Browns. As is with every team, the quarterback was the hot topic of discussion. Unfortunately for the Browns, it always seems like its for the wrong reasons.

Nationally acclaimed football columnist Peter King, rolling large in his brand new luxury bus sporting the logo of his new website themmqb.com, a SI spinoff featuring a number of talented football writers, opened eyes when he posted a video review of Browns camp with one main takeaway… ‘Weeden Is Not The Guy’. ”I’m very skeptical”, explains King in his video postcard from Berea. ”He’s a great guy. He’s got a great ability to throw the ball downfield. I question whether or not he can be accurate enough to be this team’s quarterback for both this year and the long haul. But he is on trial. He is gonna get the chance to prove to this administration that he deserves to be the quarterback long term.”

At the same time, former General Manager turned columnist/author/radio host, Pat Kirwan, who I’ve written about previously here, was on hand to watch the Browns in action. He had a somewhat different take on Weeden and what he sees for the second-year signal caller out of Oklahoma State. ”Weeden looks great in the shotgun and was impressive in distributing the ball to all of his receivers”, wrote Kirwan at CBSsports.com. ”(Joe) Banner said that Chudzinski and Norv Turner wanted the opportunity to coach Weeden, who is a good fit in the new offense with all the shotgun in the package. Weeden told me he feels comfortable being coached by Turner. I expect him to throw for 20-plus touchdowns and 3,000 yards.” It was, in a word, baffling to hear the two reports and think that they were talking about the same guy.

Finally, on Friday, it was Mike Lombardi’s former cohort at NFL Network and CBS Sports columnist Jason LaCanfora’s turn to assess Weeden. Before practice even began, he appeared on 92.3 The Fan to discuss the team and his opinions with Adam the Bull. “We don’t know how (Weeden) is gonna play in this system. I don’t believe he will be their quarterback of the future. And they’re well positioned to make hay in next year’s draft with the assets they’ve acquired.” If it were me, I think I’d like to see a guy practice before I make a determination one way or another but apparently, that’s not a prerequisite for being a national sports columnist.

At any rate, three different people. Three (mostly) different opinions. None of which really matter in the grand scheme of things. The opinions that matter are, of course, of the people who have been in Berea every day watching and evaluating the entire Browns roster. They’re the ones who will ultimately decide if Brandon Weeden does enough to deserve a third season as the Browns QB.

Sure, it’s convenient to assume that King and LaCanfora used their connections to get an educated glimpse inside the minds of Banner/Lombardi and conclude that their comments about Weeden are more than just hunches. But that doesn’t account for Kirwan, who cited Banner when forming his opinion of Weeden. As I said on Twitter, the opinion of a former personnel man (Kirwan) who has worked in an NFL front office tends to carry a bit more weight with me than someone who spent their formative years pushing deadlines at a local paper.

I do believe LaCanfora when he hypothesizes that this regime wouldn’t have drafted Brandon Weeden as early as the last did but even that doesn’t matter anymore. What matters is that they, according to Kirwan, listened to their hand-picked coaches and decided, given the lack of viable options, to entrust Weeden (and the fate of the 2013 Browns) to Norv Turner and Rob Chudzinski.

I also believe LaCanfora is onto something when he refers to the bounty of ammunition the Browns have acquired in next year’s draft as a means to acquire a quarterback if they see fit. If they’re really worried that Weeden isn’t the guy, they have the resources to move around and acquire a quarterback they believe in for the future. The best case scenario, on the other hand, is that Weeden proves he is a capable starter for the long term and the Browns can use those acquired picks to build a better team around him. But it would be naive to ignore the possibility that that may not be in the cards. The Browns have prepared themselves in any event.

In the end, I think the Browns decision-makers are smart for a) trusting their coaches b) refusing to panic, even if they believe Weeden has a limited potential and c) positioning themselves to be able to make a move in the future. There is one thing for sure… this fan base cannot afford to sit and watch as the team tanks to a lowly record only to hope they’re in a position to get a quarterback high in the 2014 draft. Giving Weeden another chance and having the coaches design a system to fit his strengths while acquiring tradable assets for the future is the only way the Browns can fulfill their promise of trying to win now while also building a team that will contend in the long term. That is the task before them and no one said it was going to be easy.

Brandon Weeden shines in win over Detroit

Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 15, 2013, 11:38 PM EDTCleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said the battle for the starting quarterback job between Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell was “close” earlier this week.

It may not be so close after Weeden’s performance Thursday night against the Detroit Lions.

Weeden made some brilliant throws in completing 8 of 12 passes for 112 yards with two touchdown passes to tight end Jordan Cameron. In two games this preseason, Weeden has completed 18 of 25 passes (72-percent) for 224 yards and three touchdowns and a passer rating of 139.0.

Weeden has been taking all of the first-team snaps in practice and has had two solid performances in the Browns’ first two preseason games. He’s done nothing to open the door for Campbell to supplant him on the depth chart.

Offensive tackle Joe Thomas didn’t feel the competition was all that close. We agree. Brandon Weeden has done enough to prove he should start for the Browns Week 1.

Yet we have sports writers being fed stories from someone in the Browns front office that Weeden is not the guy...makes no sense...but this is Cleveland.

I'll be the first to say that two pre season games do not make a QB...that said though, anyone watching the 3 Browns QBs last night could clearly see that Weeden's passes were different than those of Campbell and Hoyer.

Watching flat passes from Campbell and Hoyer, I caught myself saying "get there, get there, get there"...their passes just seemed to be in the air longer than Weeden's passes...the difference in velocity is so obvious and Weeden's passes are accurate.

It was good to hear from Joe Thomas, sticking up for Weeden. Forget the guys in the front office who feel a need to play games and who are weak on experience on the football side...I'll trust Joe Thomas and my own eyes.

I've been waiting, in fact I think we've all be waiting, for somebody to step up and take command of the Browns QB job by actually playing well and winning the job... rather than being the better of 2 questionable options.

Weeden has taken some strides in that direction over the last few weeks. I respect Chud's prerogative to say the battle is still close to keep Weeden motivated and not let him take anything for granted but anybody who believes that somebody other than Weeden will be starting week 1 is out of touch with reality.

He may not be everything we want, but he is better in this system than Shurmy's hot mess. He seems like he is game ready and scoring. I respect his work so far. But he does get it done so far.

If we aren't backing this horse, then which one do you put infront of him at this point. I have enjoyed cheering for a change. Time to fan up and back the man.
