The bad news won’t stop for injury-prone running back Montario Hardesty.

Coach Rob Chudzinski announced today that Hardesty will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday. Chudzinski didn’t have a timetable for recovery, but a scope usually sidelines a player for about a month.

Chudzinski didn’t say which knee was bothering Hardesty, but he’s had the anterior cruciate ligament repaired in both knees – the right as a freshman at Tennessee and the left as a rookie in 2010. Hardesty missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury, then returned to team drills Monday only to dislocate his right thumb catching a high snap.

The revelation of the knee issue was a surprise and Chudzinski said it was unrelated to the hamstring. “The knee had been nagging him,” Chudzinski said.

Hardesty’s roster spot was in jeopardy before the scope.

During his time on the stationary bike, Dion Lewis and Brandon Jackson had performed well and may have moved past him on the depth chart as backups to Trent Richardson.

Hardesty will miss the whole preseason and likely won’t be ready for the opener Sept. 8. The Browns could keep him on the active roster, waive him, put him on short-term injured reserve or season-ending injured reserve.

He has been limited to 23 games and 537 rushing yards in three years with the Browns. He was a second-round draft choice. -

Horrible waste of a draft pick. I wasn't happy when we chose him. Unfortunately he's been what I thought he was going to be. Fragile.
Thanks for collecting a paycheck for being on the trainers table.
Time to cut our losses.

Is it frowned upon to IR an injured player just so he won't be able to go to a different team?

I would definitely IR him.

Has he practiced with the team at all since Camp opened??

Within the limits of the "laws", I believe it's time to cut our losses and release him; I doubt a trade being possible. If you can't stay healthy, then there is no spot for you as other guys are waiting in line...

It's almost laughable with this guy's injury career. To think all of the other players we could have drafted in his spot (and with the picks we gave up). He has given us nothing.

I know this doesn't mean much because there are factors we know now that we didn't at the time but here are some players drafted after Hardesty:

Jimmy Graham
Eric Decker
Brandon Spikes
Navorro Bowman
Mike Williams
Aaron Hernandez

That's not as many as I would have thought and it pales in comparison to the list of guys drafted after Massaquoi and Robiskie.

If we would have listened to Bernie we would have had Jimmy Graham (what do you think about that Peter King?) But in all seriousness, this is bound to happen when you have a history of taking guys with injury concerns like Heckert.

So, I believe that means that he cannot be PUP'd, right? So, the surgery might be the means to IR him - or something?

I doubt that we injury-waiver him without getting to see him in this offense; especially when it won't cost that much to sit him a year.

is it possible that he saw the writing on the wall and then complained about his knee knowing he'd be paid for the whole year while on IR?

I would think that they don't do surgery over a complaint. There would be an MRI and they'd need to see something, I think.

How many paychecks should he get for sitting? It's pretty much been his career path.
Personally I'd volunteer for surgeries to earn the kinda money he's made. What a career choice!

I understand that. I feel for the kid. But at some point we've stopped paying the player for his production and started paying for the surgeon's kid's college fund. I think that line has been crossed. It's time to cut bait. I'd rather open the roster spot for someone else. Besides the surgeon needs a break.

Worse second round pick Robiskie or Hardesty? (Both are far behind Veikune.)

I feel sorry for the guy but at this point it's just over. I'd rather cut my losses and go with Richardson, Lewis, B Jackson, and Obie as the FB.

I vote Robiskie.
Hardesty just couldn't get off the trainers table long enough to play any meaningful amount. I don't blame him for his injuries. Though I do blame Savage for picking a RB in the second round that already had both knees rebuilt before stepping onto an NFL field.
Robiskie on the other hand was healthy but pathetically unproductive. That's mainly on him. Be it poor work ethic, or I don't know, but he just brought no game. Players from his own college team that he was better than at OSU have surpassed him in the pro game. I don't get it. I place that blame on his shoulders.

I thought Hardesty was a Heckert pick?

My bad. Either way it doesn't change my feelings at the time of the pick or currently. Wasted pick.

It was a Heckert pick I believe ... I think in his first year. We traded three picks to move up and snag him ... and IIRC it was a desperation pick because the other RB's we wanted had just come off the board.

As if it's his fault a team drafted him in the second round and his body can't hold up. Here is a guy who chased his dream and is physically unable to pursue it, and you're talking trash to him. Color me confused. It's an unfortunate set of circumstances and I feel really bad for Hardesty. It's not like he tried to screw us over just to collect free money.

Tough news this is for him. IR means we have to vote later on his status. If this is slow is the practice squad an option. May have just injured himself out of a roster spot.

Practice Squad is not an option and neither is PUP. So it will either be waived/injured, IR, or we just keep him on the active roster (which we won't do).

I think he's gone. Feel for the kid, though.

I just don't see a reason to keep him. He's got bum knees and just can't stay healthy. Why would we even IR him? To see if he'll be healthy next year? We have Trent and a host of other RBs.

Hardesty didn't show me enough in his limited play that made me say he's worth a roster spot for 6 or 7 games a year.

Sorry. Maybe a little harsh. I was furious when we took him. Unfortunately he lived up to what I expected. My frustration over it all is oozing out.
Again I don't hold him responsible for the situation.

Then Purp writes, "I doubt that we injury-waiver him without getting to see him in this offense; especially when it won't cost that much to sit him a year.", I lose my mind. How many more checks will this guy draw for nothing before he's cut? I don't know what his contracts have been like but I'm sure he's made REALLY good money for the production he's given us. Why should this continue? Let someone else who might see the field get paid.

My heart goes out to him. Honestly. His career was over before it ever got started really. That sucks. But as a fan of the team enough is enough.

I'm still trying to figure out how a sore thumb from an errant snap turns into knee surgery.

idk. but thinking the thumb was what set him over for the year and thought might as well get knee 100% since not playing this year?

Maybe when the trainers saw him coming in for an exam, they just assumed they should do an MRI of his knee.

As good as he looked it's time to move on. People bagging on Trent for being injury prone, this guy is TR lite in that regard.

I thought it was a thumb injury? Now a knee scope?

Wow, that escalated quickly. Sorry Montario but I think this is the nail in the coffin.
