This pretty much sums up Hardesty's career thus far:
It's a shame too, because he seems like a good kid, and he seems like a hard working kid ...... he just continues to get hurt in fairly major ways.

They can't simply cut him right now. They can put him on the IR or move him to the practice squad until he recovers and then cut him.
This is the 2nd or 3rd person to suggest the practice squad. Am I mistaken in thinking that he isn't eligible for the PS? I thought the only choice would be to cut him, IR, or 53 man roster.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
Practice Squad Eligibility According to league policy, only certain types of players are allowed to sign to the practice squad. Players cannot have played more than nine regular season games or been on the active roster for an entire year, nor can players be allowed to spend more than two seasons on the same team’s squad unless that team’s active roster never dips below 53 players. Montario played 10 games in 2011, and 13 games in 2012.

Hardesty is Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner minus the 2 or 3 good solid years they gave us.
I feel for the guy, but he's going to get cut. I think our depth is good enough with Lewis and Jackson, plus Obi, who if he ends up at the FB spot, can just move over.
I hope Hardesty can get past this and give it another crack, unfortunately it will probably be with another team. I'll be rooting for him, as long as it's out of our division.
Most likely he's just getting some cartilage cleaned out... Not a big deal by itself but does feel like its just another thing with him... I keep thinking he's gonna get healthy and have a breakout year but I'm starting to lean to the 'cut him' side of the fence
I remember being skeptical when we drafted him (given his injury history and how much we gave up to grab him). But I was willing to be patient and give our FO the benefit of the doubt. I basically gave him a 50% chance to really help us. And that percentage has droped about 10% with each injury/setback since then. His time is up now.

What does MoMass and Robo have to do w/this conversation, unless of course you are simply trying to deflect attention from what a terrible pick Heckert made by pointing out ones he didn't?
I hope they IR him. The guy was a second round pick. Didn't we trade up to get him? Expensive. It would be nice to get some productivity from such a costly pick.
Still can't believe we have spent a first round pick and a second round pick on RBs, in the space of a couple of years.
I backed this guy until now..He's toast, stick a fork in him.
Some guys just are always hurt, I played with guys like that over many years. Good players, but just hurt all the time. Time to move on. There can't be any hard feelings on his part, he hasn't lasted a month or two since he was drafted.
I can't believe everyone is piling on this guy at a bad time and I'm on a Browns board. Just like it's more important to be proven right for hating a draft pick. Sounds like its like kick a guy when he's down. Is this a good example of what is said about Browns fans, die hard fans that support the team for decades through good and bad. Let's throw the guy in Lake Erie? Did he fumble on the 1 yd line, did he quit in his prime like Jurivicious?, Did he take his talents to South Beach? Did he move the team to Baltimore? or Get a DUI on a bridge?
I wonder if any player can end there career in Cleveland? How are free agents going to think if they read this thread? I used to think I knew what it meant to be a Browns fan. For one they were smart about football. First Shaun Lauvao and now Hardesty is going to miss time, you never know what you are going to get.
If Hardesty is done then this teams offense just took another hit. Who is going to move the offense during those snaps Richardson is watching on the sideline. There is a reason they traded up to get Hardesty. I think if he is out? I think If he is out, then Dion Lewis is going to disappoint. And I think Brandon Jackson has a lot still to prove, which it's 50-50 if he will.
Sounds like this team just lost a good player, a solid player and they need him back. Right behind you Montario, 100%. It was a great draft pick. Unfortunatly circumstances haven't allowed Hardesty to be showcased as much as one might hope, yet.
If the Browns have to enter the season without Hardesty on the roster, it is going to be a big hit to their effectiveness as a team.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
I liked Hardesty from the get go, but, come on man, this guy will never be haelthy. How many years do you need to see it? Like I said, he's done. Don't hate the guy, just looking at it realistically. He has done nothing to help this team, time to move on.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
Quote: So his only choices are IR and released/waived?
Yes or to remain on the active roster.
Montario is inelligible for the PUP list because he has practiced. (5 times, though the limit is any practice).
That's correct.
The team could also put him on the mid season IR, that would make him eligible to start practicing 6 weeks after being put on the special IR list, and eligible to return after 8 weeks. (IIRC) WE did this with Phil Taylor last year.
He would have to "make" the final roster, and then could be put on the special designation IR. I don't know that the Browns would do that with him though. However, if we have no significant injuries that would be healed mid way through the season ..... who knows? On the other hand, we might want to hold onto that exemption in case of another significant injury during the season. (as the Ravens did with Lewis last year)

They were all second round disappointments. I was just interested in who was the most disappointing. It seems like a relevant question.
I didn't care if Heckert stayed or got fired. I totally understood Haslam/Banner firing him.
Hardesty arguably the best, just always injured. Hardesty was healthy all season while we were trotting in a busted up T Rich. At least MoMass could contribute a bit when McCoy wasn't getting him concussed. Robiskie was no talent no contribution. Veikune was a mistake.
Man, I still wonder what the heck happened to Robiske. He was such a soldi receiver in college, and given that he was so solid, and that his father was a coach in the NFL, it seemed as though he should have been able to step in and contribute rather quickly. Instead he rarely contributed. He didn't seem destined to be a superstar, but given his football intelligence, his body control, his ability to run good routes, and his hands, he had the look of a 10 year #3, or 4 receiver. Instead he delivered almost nothing. Sometimes he actually looked disinterested. Strange. I was really disappointed by the way his career turned out.

Robo was an enormous bust. All that excitement and getting pumped up that we got him was fully depleted after two seasons of not really getting any productivity outta him. Shameful cause like you said YTown, he was a legit weapon in college and his old man already established coaching positions.

I think it came down to separation. Guy had good hands, good size, and WR coach in the family. I just don't think he had the bulldog in him to be a player.
It was hard to judge how well he played with the Browns because he was never out there. If you totaled every ball thrown his way during his time with the team, does that number go over 10?
The competition at WR when Robo was here was slim. If he couldn't beat that out for field reps, perhaps he is even worse than we already think he is. Besides he's moved on and still hasn't done anything to make a case for himself. I think Detroit has cut, resigned and cut again (cut to make room for a safety I believe) therefore displaying his level of being expendable.
I still think he's a free agent 'trying' to find a team, which may not even happen.
To me he just never seemed like he was trying all that hard. He could have been busting it when the cameras weren't on, but he just never seemed to me to be working his butt off. You would think that a guy who came from a big time program, and whose father was a coach, would know that you have to push every second to get better, or else you're going to get worse.

robo sucked because he had NFL level coaching his whole life, making him reach his ceiling in college. once getting to the NFL, he could no longer rely on his coaching to make up for his lack of physical ability. while everyone in the nfl had the physical gifts, and improved their ability through NFL coaching, robo could not improve the physical gifts he lacked.
major bust.
veikune played how i would have expected a 6th round pick to play... ohh yeah but he was picked in the 2nd by magini who i liked, but obviously not as someone with drafting powers.
momas i liked, he just couldnt catch a break getting knocked on his dome over and over. i thought he was a decent player.
hardesty also, a good payer, but isnt built for the NFL.
i'd rank their bustiness (no homo) as: robo hardesty veikune momas
because robo just sucked, hardesty we paid a lot for and he just cant sniff a snap, veikune while perhaps the least contributing id say should never have been a 2nd, and shouldnt be judged on 2nd rnd expectations, and momas i think contributed and played well, just had bad luck with head injuries

Where's the motivation to do any of that when your dad has probably made millions as an assistant coach over the years? Like I said, no bulldog in him.
I'd say Veikune is BY FAR the worst draft pick of the bunch simply because it was such a reach. I remember being in shock that we selected that dude. Man, I still can't believe it.

In past years, that 53rd spot wasn't so valuable. This year, using that spot on a guy who won't be available for some time versus a developing youngster will be a tough call. We're not Thin at RB, either.
If we can maintain rights while opening up a roster spot till mid-season, IMO that's the way to go. If a spot does not open up or a need arise, maybe we could work a trade of some sort.
We would probably need to get him some action to get any trade value, though.
Hardesty ran well last year. If he can get healthy, a back like that is good to have. We don't have anybody better for #2 RB.
The mid season return IR is for an injured player who is hurt in camp or a game, and who is not eligible for the PUP list. The player on this list cannot practice at all until 6 weeks have elapsed. Then the team as, IIRC, a 2 week window to decide whether or not to activate him.

That could happen. Of course, if he is expected to be back week 2 or 3, the team may just keep him on the final roster, and have him available immediately, as soon as he's able to work.
