From Fridays SF game

we knew this..

4. PHIL DAWSON HAS A BIG LEG: When the 49ers signed Phil Dawson, it didn't generate a whole lot of excitement outside the Bay Area. Maybe it should have.
After spending more than a decade with the Browns, capped by an appearance in the Pro Bowl last season, the 38-year-old kicker signed with the 49ers in March. The idea was to solidify their kicking game after David Akers struggled for much of last season.
Dawson was 2 of 3 on field goals in a loss to Denver last week, but he was perfect on three tries against Kansas City. That included two 55-yarders that had plenty of room to spare.

One side: Banner is a troll and disrespected Phil Dawson.

Other side: Dawson wanted to play for a team with a chance to win the Super Bowl. He wouldn't have signed even if he was offered a contract.

Can we be done now?

When you're asked to meet under a bridge, and sign your contract in blood...

...you run the other way.

That's a lot of conjecture that we will never have a way to know.

For some reason, I feel once we start missing FG's, it won't die. Especially the long ones.

Heck, I saw Brady Quinn's name in a post just a little while age!

It's hard for people to let go of Dawson. I know it is for me. But I also know that there were very strong and substantial indications that he didn't want to be here any longer, and we had no ability to keep him here against his will, not with the tag being a ridiculous amount of money.

I greatly appreciate the time he gave us. He's become better...and unbelievably, stronger...as he's gotten older. But we never had a chance of keeping him. It's time for the fans to just let it go.

Be happy that he's on a team that can make him a winner because he deserves it. There's nothing good which can come out of wishing for something that wasn't ever possible.

Dawson should write an article for other NFL players on how he gets away with using PEDs!

Just kidding of course, Love ol' Phil and don't think he's juicing, just impressive that a guy can have a stronger leg at 38 than he did at 27. Whoever his personal trainer is should be proud.

And you know that how? I've heard the opposite.

Franchising a kicker for 2 straight seasons should at least show he wanted to move on, but I am not basing my belief on that. Phil was one of my favorite players - got to meet him in NOLA a few years ago after the game. Great guy and I wish him the best.

score TD's and stop relying on FG"s to score points... and if this team is going to rely on a kicker to be the top scorer....then puke !

Phil is gone so what...the Browns chances of a SB are done....lmao

J/C...

Dude's a kicker - granted a good one - but I moved on the second it came down that he wouldn't be in Cleveland this season.

Phil Dawson was a nobody in 1999 and proved himself over time... it can happen again.

San Fran got a great kicker, I am sure they knew that when they signed him and I am sure they are beyond confirmed and confident of their decision now. He nailed two 50+ yarders for them in the one preseason game.

Weird seeing him in the red colors, but hey - great and blue collar guy but time to move on and hope that we can still have a reliable kicker in Grahm or Bogataoy (although he pulled a groin muscle kicking in preseason? Dude, learn to loose and stretch pre-game dude, especially if you're trying to secure yourself a gig here/elsewhere ).

How's this for irony?

Browns make SB. And SF doesn't.

They better hope Kaep doesn't get hurt or that might not be that far fetched.

Or the Browns play the 49ers in the Super Bowl ... Bogotay hits a 48 yarder to put us up 1 point with 1:00 left ... Phil misses a 48 yarder to win the game.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Bogotay can't even play a preseason game without pulling a groin. Shame too b/c he needs all the reps he can get trying to beat out veteran Grahm, if he doesn't get the job here he needs himself on film as much as possible for other teams.

Dude needs to learn to warm up and loosen up. They give the players plenty of time for stretching and etc pre-game.

I know the kicking game is important, but I'm one guy thats a little tired of watching field goals. In a weird way, I think having a "money" FG kicker has blunted the Browns' offensive approach over the years, once they get into opponent territory. It was almost like they'd say "play it safe, we're inside Phil's range.". I'm hoping to see an aggressive approach that goes for TD's. Phil is a top 5 FG kicker, but there will be good kickers available if our current guys can't cut it. There's one available right now if we want him - Dan Carpenter, a guy with a big leg and an 81% FG pct.

I believe your point is moot.

No matter the score, even a high score, if you're down 2 points with 11 seconds to go depending on your kicker to hit a 51 yard field goal in bad weather? The result of that game depends on the kicker.

Many games are decided by the kicker even in games with potent offenses. That's really not even a topic of debate.

Many say Phil didn't want to be here. Yet GM insists he did. I have met and talked with GM and have trust that he knows something he simply can't say, or he would.

I'm not casting stones at this FO because he's not here. But I do believe over the next three years, which is the contract Phil wanted, we will lose at least a few games we very well may have won with him here.

Hopefully it won't make a difference in post season ramifications when it does happen, or there will be a lot more Phil Dawson posts to come during that time.

I'm aware the FG kicker can decide a game, and I alluded to Phil as top 5, and a "money" kicker. Someone said above that either A.) The Browns disrespected Phil and didn't offer a contract, or enough of a contract, or B.) Phil didn't want to sign here. I think it possible that its C.) Both are true. I can't address what GM knows, or thinks he knows - and I mean no offense to him.

What is irrefutable is that Phil Dawson is a 49er now. Players come and go, and we move on.

And given his history, he probably would have, but you just never know..

Phils missed a few early in his career. So much so that there was a groundswell of "lets dump him" feelings running around. Remember that.

I think he's one helluva kicker and I will Always wish well for him. But he's not a Browns Player anymore. I'm going to root for whoever takes his place.

Since there were no negotiations between the Browns and Dawson and Dawson's contract was up...he had no choice but to move on.

Joe Banner did not believe Dawson was worth a contract offer so he let him walk without even trying to negotiate a contract.

...anyone can kick in Cleveland, right?

We will find out..

The Browns could lose some games due to the kicking game...but no one cares about that because we got our kicker at the league minimum.

No need, mac, I got this one for you...

arps...clearly you don't understand who Joe Banner is.

Only I do...you see, I do a lot of research. I know that probably seems odd to you and others, as I'm the only one who does this.

But if you had done any research on Joe Banner, you'd know that he lacks empathy....

If someone were to ask you or I why it's wrong to strangle a prostitute, we'd probably come up with a number of reasons.

Joe Banner wouldn't be able to. He wouldn't see anything wrong with strangling a prostitute, if he felt like it.

Where most people hired to run an NFL team would sit down and start thinking of what they need to do to put a winner on the field, a guy like Joe Banner sits down and starts thinking about how he can hurt people.

A guy like Joe Banner doesn't negotiate. He strangles hookers and inflicts pain.

This probably belongs here instead of starting a new thread .... as expected Buffalo has released Rian Lindell ... so between he and Carpenter, we have our chance to sign a reliable vet if needed.

Depends on if the prostitute can kick field goals for us, I guess. I lost track of this thread awhile ago. But if they are on the field in our uniform, I back them. PD is missed, I wish him success in the rest of his career. But he left us. Game over.

Free-kick excitement at end of half falls short with Phil Dawson’s failed attempt

Do you know the NFL's free-kick rule? If you were watching the end of the first half of Thursday's game between the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams, you got a tutorial. You just didn't see history being made.

The rule is an obscure one. Any team that fair catches a punt then can subsequently attempt a free kick, like a kickoff, that counts for three points if it goes through the uprights. The best part? The defense can't rush the kick.

That exact scenario played out at the end of the first half when the Rams couldn't run the clock out as the 49ers used all their timeouts. When Kyle Williams fair caught the ball at the San Francisco 39-yard line, it appeared that Jim Harbaugh would then send out Colin Kaepernick for a final Hail Mary heave with only seconds remaining on the clock.

Not so fast!

The sneaky, obscure-rule-loving Harbaugh instead sent out kicker Phil Dawson for what would have been double history.

The Chargers’ Ray Wersching is believed to be the last person in league history to successfully make a free kick, hitting a 45-yarder against the Buffalo Bills in 1976, although many have attempted them over the years, including Neil Rackers in 2008.

But Dawson's 71-yard kick would have bested the all-time long mark of 63 by nearly a whole first down. Sadly, it went way left. At least, it was a far more worthwhile attempt than Rackers' was.

Maybe it was ill-conceived. Dawson, after all, had missed a 53-yard "normal" field goal earlier in the game and is off to a tough start this season, having missed as many kicks as he's made since leaving the Cleveland Browns.

Oh well. If you are a football geek, it was exciting during the buildup.

I'm pretty sad to see that he's off to a bad start and so are the 49ers. I wonder if they still think that CK is the real deal?

Phil can't catch a break man. But I can't be upset over a 71 yard failed attempt.
