Denver makes sense as Moffitt was the backup OC for Seattle along with part-time starting OG.

John Moffitt will not be the answer to the Browns’ injury-related problems at guard.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the trade sending Moffitt from the Seahawks to the Browns in exchange for defensive lineman Brian Sanford has been voided. Per Cabot, the Browns had some concerns about Moffitt’s health so they decided to call the whole thing off and retain Sanford rather than add another injured guard to the mix.

The Browns are without Shawn Lauvao, who started camp as the team’s right guard, because he had arthroscopic surgery on his ankle and Jason Pinkston, who replaced him, went down with a high ankle sprain in last week’s preseason game. That may mean another move in the near future unless they are convinced 2012 seventh-rounder Garrett Gilkey is better than any available options.

Moffitt will head back to Seattle, where he will resume a battle he’s been losing with J.R. Sweezy for the right guard job and continue to steer clear of the Lincoln Square Mall when he needs to use the restroom.

Weird.

Quote:

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Broncos added another piece to the interior of the offensive line Tuesday, trading for Seattle Seahawks guard John Moffitt.

The club traded defensive tackle Sealver Siliga in exchange for the offensive lineman.

Moffitt, a third-year pro from the University of Wisconsin, was originally drafted in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
He started nine games as a rookie before his season ended due to a knee injury. He recovered to play in eight games last season, starting six, and saw time in both of Seattle's playoff games.

The 6-foot-4, 319-pound guard was an AP first-team All-American in his final year at Wisconsin, when he helped block for new Broncos teammate Montee Ball.

Siliga spent the entire 2012 season on the team's active roster, contributing one tackle in one game played. He spent the 2011 season on the club's practice squad.

"Thanks (to the) Denver Broncos organization for everything they've done for me," Siliga tweeted.

I expect we try and add a different guard in the next few days.

Moffitt failed his physical. We got back Sanford. Seattle immediately traded Moffitt to Denver.

This is crazy. Just like the situation a few years ago with Broderick Bunkley.

Why is he healthy enough for Denver but not for us?

No, only in Cleveland are we so stupid to not draft a guard when we blatantly need one, but instead go into the season with two bums who both proceed to get injured in the preseason, only to make an amazing trade for an instant replacement for a guy who is going to get cut anyway but then turn around and ship him back home less than 24 hours later because of a failed physical leaving us still completely screwed at RG.

It's one of those too ridiculous to be true scenarios that we've learned to accept as "a normal day in Cleveland".

When you say "blatantly need" do you mean "have three guys who can be at least league average?"

As if they had something to do with it other than playing football.

Man I gotta wonder what it is like for Sanford to be traded and then sent back. Can't be great for instilling a lot of team spirit in a guy. I suspect he'll be gone either by trade or by cuts. Not that he isn't a decent player.

Good point. Another "conspiracy" theory may be that the Browns realized Desmond Bryant's back was more injured than first imagined, and pulled the plug on the deal to get Sanford back.

Good idea to acquire an experienced OG....wrong target however. Back to square one, but keep plugging away.

Or perhaps that it wasn't us that voided the trade, and maybe Seatlle in an after-the-fact move thought they liked the other player better and quickly worked out a deal with Denver then moved to cancel ours. The guessing game could be endless.

In any case, it doesn't matter much. We get back a bubble player while losing a bubble player that was going to be leaned on to contribute - hopefully.

As for Sanford - at least he knows that while he may not have a future here because we are stacked, at least other teams have noticed him and may be interested in him off waivers. All he can do is take care of the things he can control and let the rest work itself out.

If this was Madden I would just throw a significant one year contract at Brian Waters.

Madden it is not.

Or just create a guard (or maybe a pair of them) that is a 99 rating.

The Browns have other options, besides rookie Gilkey.

Jarrod Shaw and Oniel Cousins might be able to fill the OG needs until Lauvao and Pinkston are healthy again.

Easy come and easy go. Oh well I applaud the front office still for making the move although it didn't work out. But, we for sure don't need another injury or health concern. I'll be expecting them to acquire another guy soon.

Could be the case. I know Sanford has some talent and athleticism ... it will be interesting to see if he makes our team.

IMO we have 1 league average guard on our roster in Greco and that's it. Lauvao and Pinkston have both been somewhere between solidly below average and awful in their time on the field for us. The quicker both of those guys are permanent backups or no longer on the team, the better our offense will be. So yeah, I thought we blatantly needed to draft a starter at RG.

No of course not. They didn't do anything wrong, but neither is going to be able to contribute for a significant amount of time and we need an upgrade regardless. Now's the perfect time to bring someone in via FA/trade to replace them using their injuries as the reason since we didn't/couldn't in the draft.

Not at all. If we make another/different move for a guard who is better than Pinkie/Lava and will at least compete for a permanent starting spot then all will be well. I like Moffitt and thought he could be that guy, but the rug got pulled out from under us. Nothing we can do now but move forward and hope the FO makes a similar move soon. My "only in Cleveland" sentiment remains .

I imagine this was the case. Saw something on the MRI they didnt like and voided the trade, makes the most sense.

I liked Moffit coming out but this is no biggie. RG is the easiest position to fill and while I dont think ready, hey he still has 2 weeks to talk all snaps and get ready. Plus Banner probably isnt done just yet working the trades.

I think you give Banner a bit much credit for all the moves and ignore others.

I was thinking the same thing. Lombardi is the one pulling the strings on these moves. He then goes to Banner for approval.

I agree. It's kind of foolish to think Lombardi is simply a lump on a log, doing nothing but collecting a monthly check.

He is the one evaluating players, making calls to see who is available, and being the conductor behind all of this.

Maybe, but they really only need him for 6 weeks or so while Pinkston and Lauvao get healthy and Gilkey gets up to speed. He just played last week and Denver took him on. Just failed his physical sounds kind of weird in this situation... especially since they were trading for him with a bubble player at a position of very good depth. If Sanford is looking like the odd man out and you don't like Moffitt's long-term prospects but he can go now, you still do the deal.

I think Sanford ends up on the roster. He's a big man that can run.

I think they didn't want to take on any preexisting risks at a position where they pretty much just need a warm body.

If they did what you think they might've done it would be a potential disaster over losing the 53rd on the roster. That's totally not worth it.

It will be interesting to see if:

1. Sanford makes the final roster

2. We deal for/pick up another guard

I disagree. I think that Banner, Lombardi, Farmer, and Chud are getting together and making decisions together.

Why do I think that? That is what they have clearly stated.

You guys are speculating w/no evidence to support your claims.

Right. But Chud and Banner are not doing all the leg work on the phones and watching film of other team's players that are potentially available (until it is clear that player is an option).

I agree w/that. I just like that they all have roles and they all are part of the decision making process. That's huge. It's so different from the previous regime where guys were just handed starting spots because the GM controlled the roster.

Chill, it probably a failed physical which if that's the case, would you still proceed to keep him? Probably like in 2010 or 2011 when we signed taht dude from the Eagles, Bunkley and everyone was all pumped and he failed his physical and guess what team got him, Denver haha. History repeating itself?

Give it a day or two, the details to why the Browns didn't go through with it will likely be made known..
