BEREA, Ohio -- Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said today that linebacker Barkevious Mingo, who suffered a bruised lung against the Lions Aug. 15, will test the lung a little today to see how it responds.

"He's doing better and he continues to be monitored and is actually going to run a little bit today,'' Chudzinski said.

But he made no promises about Mingo, who will sit out Thursday's preseason finale in Chicago, being ready for the opener Sept. 8.

"We have no timetable,'' Chudzinski said/ "We'll just have to see how he progresses and how he heals.''

He stressed that healing is an individual thing, which is why he's not sure exactly when Mingo will be back.

However, he won't place Mingo on short-term injured reserve, which would keep him out at least half the season.

Browns guard Jason Pinkston, who suffered a blot clot in his lung last year, said he feels for Mingo and knows what he's been going through with a lung injury, which is very serious.

"But he's doing great,'' Pinkston. "He'll come back strong and I can't wait to see him play. He was really coming along.''

Pinkston said both players are lucky they're in the best medical hands in the world at the Cleveland Clinic.

Other quick hits from Chudzinski and the locker room today:

* Running back Trent Richardson revealed that he played at 236 or 237 last season -- up 11 or 12 from the 225 he's playing at right now. "I feel fast and soft on my feet,'' he said. He said he watched films of himself in high school and college and realized he needed to get back to basic. A lot more on that later in a full story on Richardson.

* Tight end Jordan Cameron will rest again today with his pulled groin muscle, but Chudzinski said he's not too concerned about it. (I am apparently more concerned about it than Chudzinsk is).

* Cornerback Chris Owens (strained arch) told Chudzinski today that he feels great, and Chudzinski is certain that Owens will be back soon. But he's lost ground to Buster Skrine in the battle for the cornerback job.

* The starters will play about 10-12 plays in Chicago, but some won't play at all, Chudzinski said. He said he won't reveal until tomorrow who will or won't play.

* Chudzinski did say that receiver Josh Gordon, who's suspended for the first two games, will see action vs. the Bears.

* Converted right tackle Oniel Cousins has the edge to start at right guard, Chudzinski said.

But i hope it is not with the first team. Somebody else is starting the opener, so IMO they should get the reps.

I hope they are hiding benji all preseason on purpose.

Perhaps this is where Nelson fits?

+ 1

Give it to Nelson or Travis...

*edit* - that is... if Nelson doesn't tweak his knee again in practice before Thursday.

That is what I have been thinking too, at least with the long ball.

Would be nice to see Trent doing some repeated road work out there with benji running mid field routes repeatedly on the same defender. Then burn him them really deep because Benji out runs them.

That or send him on a few early out and ups, then just start hitting the 10 yd out all day long.

I'm glad Richardson dropped the weight. The guy we saw in college ran with power and had some of the best moves I've ever seen. Maybe he bulked up because he thought it would help him hold up through a long season?

BEREA -- Trent Richardson hopes to play against the Bears, but if he doesn't he says his preseason has been a success.

"I feel really good about it," he said. "If I don't get to (play), I'm still going to feel good about this preseason, this whole camp. I think I've been doing fine, especially (bonding) with my team and the offensive line. These guys have made a big impact on me over the last few weeks than they did all of last year. Us being a team, a family, our chemistry."

Last year, Richardson missed all of the preseason after having arthroscopic surgery on his knee and didn't work with the first team in practice until three days before the season opener. He said bonding with the team, particularly the offense has been very beneficial.

"We joke together and we a lot of stuff together off the field and keep our vibe going at all time," he said. "I'm just happy with the success we've had amongst ourselves with goals in trying to put this team together and just trying to build a chemistry as a family. I'm really happy with (the preseason)."

Richardson has looked more explosive in the preseason, particularly against the Colts. He has just 13 carries in the preseason for 64 yards, but is averaging 4.9 yards a carry. In his rookie season, RIchardson rushed for 950 yards, but his average was just 3.6 per carry.

"It's so much better," he said. "Last year, I just came in and went right into the fire. Now, the timing is just getting better and better each day. The offensive line is making better communication. Brandon (Weeden) is communicating with the line and with me. Everything is on point, and coach is communicating with the offense and getting the plays in and out. With the timing, it is an important thing and I think it's gotten so much better the past few weeks."

Richardson said he's healthy and hasn't felt this good since his college days.

"It's been a long time," he said. "Feeling this quick and feeling this light, I feel real soft on my feet and real light on my feet and that's a good thing. When I do make that explosive cut through the hole, hopefully, nobody can see me and I can just flash through there. At the same time, it's just a lot of hard work and it's a mental thing, too."

Richardson admitted during the 2012 season he wondered how long it would take him to be 100 percent healthy.

"In the (2012) season, I did," he said. "I wondered when would I ever be healthy or when would be that time I could just step out and just pull away from everybody like I'm used to doing. I knew at a point, that it wasn't going to come last year. Right after the knee surgery, i just started to get my balance back and then I broke my ribs and they told me how long it was going to take I knew it wasn't going to get better and I just have to play through it. I just have to man up."

It might be wishful thinking, but Richardson said he intends to stay on the field this season.

"This year, I'm not even looking toward injuries, no broken finger nails or nothing," he said laughing. "I know my whole season is based on being healthy and hopefully, playing later on in the season in the playoffs. That's what we're trying to get to."

Richardson said he played a good portion of the 2012 season 10 or 11 pounds heavier than he currently is.

"Last year, I was probably playing at 236 or 237, not being able to run during the week because of the injury, but I'm going to try my hardest to play at 225 the whole year."

He feels his quickness will help him in the open field and is looking forward to being used in that capacity.

"I think I'll be used a lot in space," he said. "It's a good thing because i have quick feet and match up against the linebacker or cornerback, especially in space. Just to get into space and getting to make somebody miss. I think to match up with a linebacker or any type of position one-on-one, I think is great."

Richardson said the entire team has a different mindset heading into the 2013 season.

"Last year is out the door for us," he said. "What we're building on this year is a whole new chemistry, a whole new vibe for our team this year, a whole new family for us. We're trying to go uphill, not downhill. We know there are going to be a lot of bumps in the road. There is going to be a lot of fight and a lot of pull and pushing and a lot of guys doing good. We just can't get that to our head. We just have to play football and play like we know how to play."

Richardson said he feels he's ready to have a big season.

"I'm very confident," he said. "People said I had a good season last year, but I want to have a great season, but I don't want it just being me, but the whole team."

Cleveland.com is reporting that he was back at practice today and did some running.... I free I worry about him somewhat but I think he'll be alright. Dunno if he'll play the first fe games but I'd expect him within week 3 or so

Us bringing in another OLB for a look doesn't bode well for Mingo returning soon ... honestly I see us putting him on the early return IR list (since we haven't utilized that with any of the injureis yet, we must be saving it)

We probably are saving it, but I think for either Lauvao or Pinkston, unlikely for Mingo, unless something we don't know, yet.

The linebacker we brought is more of a inside linebacker in our system. 227 pound linebackers don't play outside in a 3-4.

We don't have to use that right away. Mingo shouldn't be out that long (as others have mentioned he has already started running). The smartest decision would be to wait for someone to get hurt midseason and bring them back later (like the Ravens did with Ray Lewis last season).

Panic seems to be setting in for some as it relates to Mingo.

He had a serious issue no doubt, but he's back, running with the team in practice but won't play tomorrow (per Chud)

Oddly enough, I'm not that worried about him.. Not yet anyway.

I believe Norv is upstairs calling the plays...Chud gets them on the sidelines and has the communication with the QB helmet. I believe that is what Trent was talking about. The trilogy of football
# 1 Communication
# 2 Trust
# 3 Finish

We are getting that stage one down pat to get to the other 2.

What was Shurmur's trilogy?

1. Ineptitude
2. Confusion
3. Battle

Same here.

The only doom and gloom came from a few doctors quoted in an article a thousand miles away and anyone on here. So far we've only heard officially that's he's fine and beginning activity. I don't really expect him to play week 1, but wouldn't be surprised if he did. Remember, it will be 24 days since the incident.

If he'd been arounf a little longer, I would have thought Pat's were "Rumbling, Bumbling, and Stumbling".

As far as Shurmur's coaching philosophy .... and as much as I am loath to speak poorly of the deceased ...... I would submit that his 3 should be:

1. Gutless
2. Mindless
3. Inflexible

Weeden said in one of his press conferences that Norv calls the plays from the booth, relays it to his son Scott Turner (wide receiver coach), and then he calls it in to Weeden.

I'm not doom and gloom.

I'd feel much better if he were cleared to take some contact rather than being able to exercise.

As one poster pointed out, is has been 24 days since the injury so I'm hoping it won't be a whole lot longer.

He is, August 15th during some "special teams" play against the Lions. They said he never even took any snaps at linebacker. He can miss the rest of whatever for all I care, aslong as this never happens again and he is ready come regular season.
