It seems like he is improving at a pretty good rate. He went from running to lifting weights in one day. My guess is that he will be practicing at some point next week and will be questionable for the first game.
As long as Sheard, Kruger, and Groves are healthy we should be pretty good at OLB. Mingo is the icing on the cake at this point.

Well, somebody is a punk. No doubt about that.
Back on track....I think he is on a good timeline.
At this point, the MD's are testing his system....a MRI before working out and a MRI after. A good look to see if the lung is recovering or starts to bruise( bleed)any further.

It seems like lifting weights is a pretty good test to see how his lung is reacting.

I agree. It's a process. Stress the lung a little, then image it to see if is gettig worse under the strain.

Actually I believe you are correct.
He is, August 15th during some "special teams" play against the Lions. They said he never even took any snaps at linebacker. He can miss the rest of whatever for all I care, aslong as this never happens again and he is ready come regular season.
I was on the record complaining several times about him playing special teams coverage.
Who puts the #6 pick on special teams coverage during the preseason?

Jones makes about half of what Mingo does.
I don't see the point in putting big money players in such dangerous situations....especially when there is absolutely nothing on the line.

I don't know that it matters much. He could have just as easily gotten hurt playing his normal defensive position.

If my memory serves me right, (probably doesn't). Kellon Winslow 2, fits that exactly. Browns traded up to #6, maybe from #6 to get him. He was on an onside kick recovery attempt, so kick coverage. It was pre-season, when he was injured for the year his second year. Remarkable.

You don't see that there's a higher injury risk playing special teams coverage than defense?

And IIRC we recovered the onside kick too ... but that was the beginning of the end for Kellen's knees

Cleveland.com is reporting that he was back at practice today and did some running.... I free I worry about him somewhat but I think he'll be alright. Dunno if he'll play the first fe games but I'd expect him within week 3 or so
Thanks for the information. Good news.

A coherent post by THROW LONG?!?! Anyway, it wasn't preseason when Winslow got hurt. It was the second game of the 2004 season against the Cowboys. I think playing a high pick on special teams is a way of making him earn his spot on the team and show the veterans and coaches he is willing to work. Also, second string outside linebackers usually play special teams, no?

Was the one guy serious when he called Mingo a punk?
We don't know the severity of the injury. Too early to say anything.
The real test is can he take a hit.

Well, that is just wrong. How can we call him a punk when we really don't know the extent of his injury? It's an internal injury. That can be very serious. The fact that he is out running and lifting proves he wants to come back. Calling him a punk is bull.

Well, he has been playing with the #2's in the game he did play. I don't think he took any reps with the first team defense to my memory.
If that's the case, Horton seemingly will use him as a situational player on pass downs and etc I am guessing. Do you want your #6 pick (that needs time to develop) to ride the bench or at least get some play in, special teams or not?
Joe Haden plays ST's. Lots of starters play ST's this team or the other. I wouldn't view it as a knock or a diss from the coaching staff just b/c you have a role on ST's, regardless of your draft pick status or talent level.

Adam Schefter said earlier today that Mingo was doubtful for Week 1 but to expect him for Week 2 ... I'll take that.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Browns linebacker Barkevious Mingo resumed running this week for the first time since bruising his lung against the Lions on August 15, but there may not be enough time left for him to rehab the injury before the first week of the regular season.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Mingo is “unlikely” to play against the Dolphins on September 8 because of the lung injury. He is, however, deemed probable to play in the team’s second game of the year against their AFC North rivals from Baltimore. Schefter’s colleague Ed Werder adds that Mingo’s scheduled for scans on his lung on Monday to help determine whether he’ll be able to get on the field.
While initial reports at the time of the injury indicated Mingo would miss a week or so, the Browns have not offered much of a timetable at all when it comes to Mingo’s return. Coach Rob Chudzinski said earlier this week that Mingo was doing better but that the team would wait and see how he progresses before making any plans about a full green light for the rookie.
Missing the first game of his first season certainly isn’t the way the Browns drew things up when they made Mingo the sixth overall pick in April, but the fact there’s been no hint that his absence would extend much beyond that game offers some reassurance that things will work out just fine in Cleveland.

This is about as good as we could have hoped for with this type of injury. The Dolphins offensive line is a mess, so we should be able to pressure them with our blitzes along with Sheard and Kruger.

Thanks for finding that ... I agree in that we couldn't expect much better (I was fearful he'd be put on the PUP)

Actually, especially in private messages where I am more likely to state what I really think. I use to refer Shurmur as Tim Conway the Ensign Pulver character on McHale's Navy. No trilogy...just Pulverism...lol

His name on McHales Navy was Ensign Parker

So would that make it a Parkerism then? lol

He's actually not eligible for that either. The injury has to sideline them for at least 6 weeks to be eligible.

IR list rules summary
Following are the main points regarding the new IR list rule changes:
Only players with a “major injury” who are placed on the IR list after 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, or during the season are eligible to be reactivated later in the season.
A major injury is described as an injury that renders the player unable to practice or play football for at least six weeks — or 42 calendar days — from the date of injury.
A player who is placed on the IR list after 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, must be immediately “designated for return” at the time he is placed on the list. That designation must appear on that day’s Personnel Notice.
That designated player is eligible to return to practice if he has been on the IR list for at least six weeks from the date he was placed on Reserve. He is eligible to return to the active list if has been on the IR list for at least eight weeks from the date he is placed on Reserve.

True, however, the player can't return to practice for 6 weeks. The player can't be added to the active roster for an additional 2 weeks.
Is one roster spot that precious that you would keep a guy off the active roster for 4 weeks longer then you actually need to?

While it stinks that Mingo and Bryant might miss the opener, we are pretty deep at those positions so it shouldn't hurt us too much.

I'm kind of bummed that Bryant won't be in there. I'm really excited to see him play alongside the rest of those guys. Having so many disruptive players next to each other is really fun to watch.
But you're right, we are deep at those positions, so it shouldn't matter too much. Add to that the Dolphins supposed oline woes, and we shouldn't skip a beat.
