Right, can't claim a guy off waivers and put on our PS.. But you can move guys on our roster to the PS to make room for guys coming in off waivers.. which is what I was thinking..

Can we sign people to the roster...and then cut them to put them on waivers -> PS?

We got another tight end -- MarQueis Gray from the 49ers.

Quote:

The Browns have claimed undrafted rookie tight end MarQueis Gray off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers, CSNBayArea.com reported today.

Gray also announced the news via Twitter.

“Well it's been fun SF and thanks for all the love & support!” Gray wrote on Twitter. “Just got the word and now Off to Cleveland to start over!! Here we go #Browns.”

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Gray played quarterback and wide receiver for the University of Minnesota, but he has been trying to make it as a tight end in the NFL. Gray caught one pass for 13 yards in the preseason.

Yes, but that would seem pointless, if they are already out there as free agents we can sign them directly to the practice squad, no matter who they were with before.

Not for 3 weeks. They are required to remain on the active roster for 3 weeks.

My money's on "crazy"

Those moves make little to no sense so far, we're claiming one UDFA rook after another. Wonder why we haven't brought them in or drafted them to begin with? Ah, you need to have a good eye for talent, that's why

Still no OL cut? What have Hauptman, Wallace done so far? Hazel and E.Martin also both still there...very strange

CLEVELAND -- The Browns have been busy in Berea today, claiming half a dozen players, waiving six -- including Brandon Jackson and L.J. Fort -- and adding some to the practice squad.

The team has yet to announce any of the moves, but through league sources, various media outlets and players' own twitter accounts, four of the six players they've claimed have been confirmed, and several of the cut. Here's what we know they've done so far:

* Cut running back Brandon Jackson, according to profootballtalk.com. Jackson, re-signed as a free agent in the offseason, averaged only 1.5 yards per carry this preseason. He rode the bench most of last season under coach Pat Shurmur.

* Cut second-year linebacker L.J. Fort, Fort announced on his twitter account. Signed as an undrafted rookie last year out of Northern Iowa, Fort played in 16 games last year, started one and made seven special teams tackles.

* Claimed rookie center Patrick Lewis from the Packers, a source told cleveland.com. Undrafted out of Texas A&M, he's 6-1, 311.

* Claimed rookie running back Brandon Magee from the Cowboys despite the Cowboys giving him a $70,000 guarantee when they signed him in April. Magee, undrafted out of Arizona State, missed the final two preseason games with a concussion suffered Aug. 19. He's a backup middle linebacker.

* Signed former Mount Union receiver Jasper Collins to their practice squad.

* Signed former 49ers tight end MarQueis Gray, an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota, according to his twitter account. He didn't specify regular 53 or practice squad.

* Claimed rookie running backs Bobby Rainey from the Ravens and Dennis Johnson from the Texans.

Baltimore hoped to add Rainey, undrafted out of Western Kentucky, product to its practice squad. The Texans wanted to do the same with Johnson, a 5-7, 196-pound undrafted rookie out of Arkansas.

With Jackson gone, the two rookies will vy for time behind Trent Richardson. The Browns have had a run of bad luck at running back, with Dion Lewis (broken fibula) and Montario Hardesty (knee scope) both being placed on injured reserve.

Rainey led the Ravens in rushing during the preseason with 89 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. He also excelled returning kickoffs and punts, averaging 31.9 yards on seven kickoff returns and 18.7 yards on seven punt returns.

Johnson rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries for the Texans in preseason. He also returned a combined 14 punts and kickoffs, but did not have the success of Rainey.

In other Browns news:

* Linebacker James-Michael Johnson, cut Saturday, was claimed by Kansas City.

* Offensive lineman Braxton Cave was picked up by New England.

The Browns have claimedrookie tight ends MarQueis Gray off waivers from the 49ers and Keavon Milton from the Saints.

Gray (6-4, 240) was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota, where he played quarterback and wide receiver.

Milton (6-4, 293) was signed by the Saints as an undrafted rookie out of Louisiana-Monroe. In 45 games there, he caught 25 passes for 220 yards and four TDs.

Earlier in the day, the Browns waived tight end Kellen Davis, who had been signed as a free agent from the Bears.

In all, the Browns have claimed six players today and waived six others.

This IS NOT how a front office builds a team "via the draft".

Clearly this is an indication that our front offices' "eye for talent" is suspect as they cut the players they (Banner and Lombardi) signed in favor of someone elses camp cuts.

Speaking of the draft...if Mingo is not able to return, it will mean our front office did next to nothing to improve the team via the draft.

The Browns front office needs someone with a strong background in "football" running the football side of this franchise.

...oh, and still no kicker for the Browns.

I haven't seen anything yet, but i would guess that we cut Smelley and probably 2 of the OL we had stocked away on the roster with the new signings. (if I count right to balance the signings)

We still have to add a Kicker, so there will be at least one more move.

Further updated Roster, though still not complete

QB (3) Weeden, Campbell, Hoyer
RB (3) Richardson, Bobby Rainey (from balt), Dennis Johnson (from Houston)
FB (2) Ogbonnay, Smelley
TE (4) Cameron, Barnidge, Marqueis Gray (from SF), Keavon Milton (from NO)
WR (4) Little, Bess, Cooper, Benjamine (Gordon suspended so not counted on 53)
OL (13) Thomas, Greco, Mack, Cousins, Schwartz, Lauvao, Pinkston, Shaw, Gilkey, Hauptman, Butler, Wallace, Patrick Lewis (C/G from GB)

LS (1) Yount
P (1) Lanning
K (ZERO) obviously a move will be made here.

DL (7) Rubin, Taylor, D.Bryant, Winn, Hughes, Kitchen, A.Bryant
LB(10) D'Qwell, Kruger, Robertson, Mingo, Sheard, Groves, Carder, Hazel, Martin, Brandon Magee (ILB from Dal)
CB (4) Haden, Owens, Skrine, McFadden
S (4) Ward, Gipson, Bademosi, Aubrey

Cut Brandon Jackson and LJ Fort so far. Per the above that is 56 players, so three more to cut. Plus need to add a kicker, which means an additional cut has to be made.

I would think that we still want to add a CB and a WR. We are still light at both spots, unless we're going to use Bademosi there as well as at Safety.

It's obvious (to me at least LOL) that we had BIG PLANS for Dion Lewis this year. The goal was a TRich/Lewis change of pace committee with Obi as our do it all FB. Once Lewis got hurt we basically threw our hands in the air. My guess is Bobby Rainey is our Lewis replacement as a shifty scat back/3rd down receiver/kick returner (albeit at a reduced level and role) and we signed Johnson as insurance in case Rainey doesn't pan out like we are hoping and praying.

Talk about unconventional. At least RB is a position that doesn't need a ton of reps to get ready.

It's either that or TRich is never coming off the field for 16 games....LOL yeah I couldn't even type that with a straight face.

Couldn't have said it better. I knew the Lewis injury was HUGE for this team. Norv envisioned him like Sproles.

The plan has always been for Richardson to get 300 carries and 60 catches. That plan has not changed much now that Lewis is hurt.

When Norv had LT he still emphasized the role of a secondary back. Trent will still obviously be the horse and the feature back, but none of the other guys we had provided that other dimension.

Seems the kicker thangy could get important in a week or so. We should probably get one like the other guys have. Anybody know if we cloned Dawson before he left?

Congrats to those who made it. Thanks to those who were cut. Go, Browns!

Jackson, Mason....french sounding part, and other dude weren't very impressive in preseason. Jackson especially. A few weeks ago I said Jackson was a starting caliber RB ..... I meant for green bay

Other dude was handling our kickoffs. Unless we stick Bademosi back there it is likely one of these RBs will be doing that.

I still like Obi as the #2 when we aren't using a fullback. Frankly I think with running backs you just get a dude with speed and plug him in ala Jerome Harrison....but I played a lot of madden.

I've actually been rethinking what I said.. Just didn't have time to come back and ask.

I thought that we could take guys that have been waived and put them on our roster. and I believe that's true. Then I was thinking, what's stopping a team from taking a guy off the street (as long as he's eligible from a years in the league standpoint) and put him on our PS. And I can't find anything that says we can't. did I miss something.

I also recognize that we can't take a player off another teams PS and and place them on our PS.

So I'm a little confused..

Emphasize is a bit strong.

2007 Chargers (Norv's first year) -- Tomlinson had 315 carries and 60 receptions. Other running backs (Turner and Sproles) combined for 108 carries (6.75 carries per game).

2008 Chargers -- Tomlinson had 292 carries and 52 receptions. Other running backs (Sproles, Tolbert, and Hester) combined for 93 carries (5.8 carries per game)

Other players didn't start getting major carries until Tomlinson's age 30 season (2009). Trent Richardson is 22. He is going to get the ball. . . a lot. I am not worried about the 5 to 6 carries per game some other guy is going to get.

All of the moves made in the last 2 days scream 1 thing to me. The coaches and Front office do not believe this team can win now. They are continuing the youth movement that Heckert and Holmgren were critized for the last 2 years.

If they felt they could win now they would not be cutting vets like Jackson, Nelson, and Davis and signing so many UDFA. They would be scrambling to sign other vets like Beenie Wells to back up Richardson.

This is very dis heartening considering the team is 30 million under the cap and 1 week before the season it seems the coaches and FO is throwing in the towel. Not what was promised from the new owner.

Unless you hit on one or two players, the back end of your roster can be interchangeable.

Most of those guys are the "Role Players" if they don't fit into the role you want them at, find new versions.

Some guys thrive in certain systems.

Tank for Teddy or Tank for Tahj.....I'm down for that. Nothing would be worse than finishing 6-10 or 7-9 and getting neither.

Please, enough of the Beanie wells stuff. He is done, bone on bone in his bad knee. His career is over. NO ONE has scrambled to pick him up.

Hmmm, still no kicker. Wow, didn't we let the best one in the game go a few months ago?

The problem I see is we have huge holes right now in key positions.

Back up running back
Tight End - Only ????? there right now.
#2 cornerback
Free safety
Kick Returner
Kicker

Until Pinkston and Lauvuo come back from injury starting right guard
Until Josh Gordon's return #1 Wide Receiver

These vets that were released weren't expected to be that great of an impact for us. But still, I not sure what to think about these moves.

We signed vets in the offseason just to see them released.... Nelson was a risk going in and it didn't work out. I don't necessarily blame the FO for taking a flyer on him-it could have been worth it. Davis and Jackson are odd cuts and we pissed money away just to see them replaced by UDFAs? ...UDFAs we signed by cutting our own roster depth and this year's UDFA signings. I don't get the Brandon Jackson cut. Not saying he is the greatest but we are terribly thin at RB and now TR's backups are UDFAs. I thought Davis was our best blocking TE. Not sure why he is gone either with our thin depth there as well. Also, this flurry of UDFA signings seems a bit chaotic to me. Hopefully it starts adding up because not much going right now makes much sense. Hopefully we get a decent kicker....

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.
