Other thread is over 300 posts, so starting anew. Hopefully, we can end this last portion of the regular season by running off a bunch of wins (despite the overall mediocre team that we have had it's quite possible due to the schedule presented. we'll see).
Regardless, we are legitimately in the WC-2 race in September. Thank Bud Selig for that extra slot.

My gut tells me it is going to be:
Boston
Texas
Detroit
Tampa Bay
Oakland

But I've been wrong many times before.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

those are the leaders right now, for sure. but, Baltimore, NYY, Cleveland, and KC are all hanging in there.
the great news is that the AL East should beat each other up this month. I don't expect to catch the A`s or Rangers, but those AL East teams might be within reach.

Just an FYI - there's no need to start new threads due to pages or post count. I know that used to be the policy, but not anymore. The server can more than handle threads even hitting 80 pages, much less 8.

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I consider NYY to be a long shot with their schedule. Cleveland has a chance IMO, but needs some help with Oakland losing because they're the hot team

I don't think there is a chance we catch Oakland (playing Seattle and Anaheim and Houston).

We need TB, Baltimore and NYY to hurt each other and lose to Boston. If Toronto can help out, then even better.

I was talking about teams with winning records that we have left on the regular season schedule.

I want to step back to the conversation at the end of the last thread. Somebody compared Ubaldo to Jeremy Guthrie as far as contract. For fun's sake, here are their contract years: Guthrie- 8-12, 4.76 ERA, 181.2 IP, 206 H, 50 BB, 101 K, Age- 33 Ubaldo- 10-9, 3.79 ERA, 147.1 IP, 132 H, 75 BB, 147 K, Age- 29 Additionally, from a stuff standpoint, Guthrie tops out about 93 mph on the fastball, last start Ubaldo hit 97 multiple times. He's going to get at least a 3-year contract, probably a 4-year deal, north of the $8.3 mill/yr. that Guthrie got. There is such a scarcity of pitching that I fully believe Indians fans will be shocked. Here is a nice write-up on it: Link

that was me, but he wasn't the only pitcher out there on short deals. perhaps Ubaldo can be get that Edwin Jackson money, but i'm not sure. if he gets Anibal Sanchez money, then yes I will be shocked.
also, that article indicates that we can get draft compensation for him but would potentially be on the hook for a 1yr/$14mil deal if he accepts (rather than goes to the market). interesting because if we extend the QO, then he will get less on the FA market and he might decide to just accept.

97 pitches is why he was pulled ... they're trying to maintain him through the season because he hasn't pitched this many innings in about 3 years.

Since the division might be out of hand .... Detroit could have done us a favor by destroying the Royals 15-1.
Oakland is currently tied in their game, and Tampa Bay is down to Seattle. Could be a very good day for the Tribe.

22 games left for the Indians. At 75 wins, I think they need to win 14-15 more games to get the 2nd wildcard, or basically win 2 of 3 in every remaining series. I'm assuming the AL East teams all stay pretty close to .500 the rest of the way, since it seems they are playing each other a lot. Topdawg's right - we need to be Red Sox fans from here on out. In any case, its a bonus to me that we're even playing in meaningful games on September 7th, since I think I had pegged the Indians at about 80 wins in April.

I didn't watch Ubaldo's last start that much, but I havn't seen him throw that hard since 2011 when we traded for him. This year he's been a low 90"s guy, topping out at 93 for the most part. I would be shocked if he got anything close to 50 million. Not saying a team wouldn't get desperate and do it, but it would be a horrible deal like 2 of the guys you mentioned. You don't give that type of money for a guy that gives you 6 innings on a good day, and at best is a number 3 starter.

He doesn't need to get $50 million, he just needs to get more guaranteed than he has next season.

Indians beat Mets 9-4. Kluber was strong for 6 innings. O's win, Yanks lose. Right now we're 1-1/2 out. Could be 1 if Tampa loses.

As bad as a loss this was today, the indians still have the inside track to the wild card. Tampa, Baltimore and New York have brutal last 20 games. If they could get on any type of streak, they should get in. I think 88 might do the trick. Maybe less. Still can't believe we lost to Dice K. He is horrible.

How many games do Tampa, Baltimore, and New York play against each other? Let's see ..... Baltimore plays 4 game series against both Tampa and New York. They play New York at home, and Tampa in Tampa. They also have a home and away with Boston. New York has the aforementioned series against Baltimore, 3 against Boston at Boston, and unfortunately series against Toronto, San Francisco, and Houston. They also have a 3 game series against Tampa at home. Wow, that's a pretty easy schedule, actually. Tampa plays Boston in Boston, at Minnesota, Boston at home. Texas at home, and Toronto on the road. Our best hope is that these 3 teams beat each other up. Texas is the other top contender, and they have a fairly hard road as well. They play 3 at home against Pittsburgh, 3 at home against Oakland, at Tampa, at KC, and finish up with the Astros and Angels at home. If they get through the 1st part of the end of their schedule, they'll be in good shape. Our advantage, and disadvantage, is that we don't have to play these contenders. That's good because we should have an easier schedule ..... but it's bad because we can't knock other teams out of it. But hey ..... it's September 9th and we're playing meaningful games in Cleveland. Kinda funny that people knock the Indians ...... but they actually have a winning record late in the season. I have a feeling that we aren't going to see that from the Browns any time soon.

I'm definitely separating out my Indians feelings from the Browns' ones.
and honestly, there is nothing the team can do from now until the end of the season that will make me more confident that they can actually knock off one of the top teams for more than 1 game (something they have struggled with all season), but I still want to see them get the opportunity to try it.

That qualifying offer decision is one that I'm very, very glad that I don't have to make. I'm about 90% certain that Ubaldo would reject it, because he'd be getting double in guaranteed money, even if he "only" got a $30 million contract. But I would be up sweating at nights until that decision was made. Plus, if you're a team that's looking at free agency to solve your rotation, you might be okay throwing money at him, but money AND a pick? That becomes a lot more expensive and he could wander into the Kyle Lohse waiting game.
