With the major parts the same, and a different operating system...will the Browns be better or worse off this season...
Lets look at the past...and see what it bodes for us...I want to start a discussion to see whether what we did last year with this roster, means that we should have higher expectations, lower expectations, same expectations.
There were many games during the Shurmur regime that we would hold a lead at halftime only to give it away as the game wore on. Many other games we were in it at halftime and done by the end of the 3rd quarter...
What does that mean for this years team?
Gameplanning can keep you in a game through the first half...A sound game plan can keep you close. But talent and coaching win you 2nd halves...Something we rarely did.
Was it coaching or talent or what combination of the two crushed our wins last year...and what can we expect this year?
As a basketball coach...I can tell you that talent wins out...but if well coached...that can win a 2nd half.
Ive had many games where as a coach I had a good game plan that has had us in games at halftime, then by not doing a great job coaching, we got smashed in the 2nd half...yes the opponents were better, but I could have done things that could have kept us in the game longer and given us a chance to win.
That's where I look at the Browns last year. Except, I rarely saw a team playing to the best of their abilities...Haden can be better, as can Ward...we've seen it. We've seen Weeden and Richardson be better albeit in college, but projections say they should be better. We've seen Joe Thomas play better, and Alex Mack as well. So I think its reasonable to assume they can be better.
Do we expect greater this season? Lets be honest. I do...but because I think our coaches will use our players to the best of their ability. I think Weeden, Richardson, Cameron, Ward, Haden, etc... will be used to their strengths much much better.
Your thoughts...what can we expect using the knowledge that we were often in games, but often fell off in the 2nd half...what does that mean for this season with an improved roster (on defense really) and a different, more aggressive coaching staff?
Discuss! Weigh In! Please...
"It has to start somewhere It has to start somehow What better place than here? What better time than now?"

I honestly believe that the only real answer is... Yes.
We're a team in flux. There are going to be steps up and steps back in a lot of different areas, and there will be things that look great, and things that look freaking UGLY. So, whether or not we are better or worse off will depend completely upon what it is you are measuring.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

If we get a lead and the other team has to get pass happy. I think thats a Horton dream. If we get a lead we will keep a lead and expand it. Not like Shurmur.

I haven't piped up for awhile so I'll weigh in.
One of the biggest changes I think we'll see this year is our ability to adapt at halftime. The last couple of years, we've seen the Browns start in one direction and not change it up at all, regardless of what the opposing team did. With Chud as well as our coordinators, I think we'll see better in-game adjustments.
Our coordinators and systems make this year a whole new ball game however as both offensively and defensively, we have moved to the polar opposites of what we ran in 2012. From controlled, short to mid range attack to a power big-play offense. From a bend, don;t break 4-3 to a risk taking 3-4.
With an improved roster, I really expect to see a far more competitive team week in and week out. Our lack of depth and a few holes still keep us from being a strong contender but i think we'll really open some eyes this year and even have an outside chance at a playoff berth.

By using the past as a reference do you mean, "Pat Shurmur did this, so that means I should do the opposite."

I don't think we can use the past as reference. While the players are almost all the same, the systems that were installed on D and O are very different.
But, I'll say this, we know the systems work. So, if the players adapt, we'll be fine, if not, we're in for another horrid year.

Like comparing apples and oranges...
Pat Shumur and Brad Childress ran an extremely lacking offense with a slew of issues that contributed to a bad offense that we witnessed. Failure to make adjustments both halftime and real-time. We've already seen better management and more up-tempo and it's just been preseason under Norv thus far.
Dick Jauron was very, very conservative. Horton is suppose to be a blitz junkie and very aggressive.
What did we learn about the Pat's crew compared to the new one? That Pat is long gone and so is his circus of crap... that is what I learned.

Using the past as a reference ...
We'll lose a couple close ones to start the year. Then we'll win a game or two, and look like we're 'turning the corner' ... Then someone will come along and put us in our place on our way to 5 wins.

I think both. I am a firm believer that great coaching makes below average players look average, average players look good, and good players look great.

The past is past. You learned from your mistakes, or you will fail in similar ways. As a yardstick, our past says anger, disappointment, frustration, and a sweet occasional victory. Some of what Shurm did was bad football; failing to adjust, being safe rather than aggressive, just judgment and gameplans in general were a consistently bad constant. I do believe head coach can kill honest effort. We had some success, but too little too seldom. It was not all his, but the results all come back there. The preseason is also past. I see more potential, more talent, a generally sharp and ready looking Browns. And they are playing with heart. Attitude will forgive some blown assignments, but we have shown some heart. I do not believe the coaches on the sideline will kill us, and even in losses I hope we dish out some punishment. I am encouraged by what I see, and I have expectations for higher achievement (but I had them last year as well). I want to see solid football — and we worse last year than we had to be. Go, Browns!

I don't think I can look at the past to determine what we might expect this coming season.
In the past we've never had a proven offensive coordinator. We've also had, on both sides of the ball, coordinators/head coaches who insisted on making whomever the players were fit into their chosen schemes instead of designing the schemes to fit our personnel.
Plus, I'm not sure we currently have any real idea of the level of talent on the team. We do have a roster full of young, inexperienced potential but I don't really know how that potential talent stacks up vs our experienced opponents.
There are just too many unknowns on the roster along with a very different coaching staff than we've ever had since our return.
For those reasons I don't think the past has any indication on the future of the Browns.

so daman, dawg LB, and ddubia...
Using that...and projecting what we think we'll see (a Chud/Norv style offense...maybe like we had in 07? and a Horton style D, something Rob Ryanish maybe?)
What will that translate to you in your opinion...
Is what I want to talk about.
We know what Shurmur did and how our players did that...what do we think we'll see with this new coaching knowing how our players played that Shurmur style. We know it didn't fit. Do you think it'll fit here? Or will it look just as confused as it did before?
So like...was it on the players inability to play a system correctly, having them doing the wrong thing, or a combination...and do you think with the guys we have, will we execute it well and be good? execute it well but not be good enough? or not execute it and be bad?
Seeing what we've seen with this pretty similar roster...what can we expect, what does this construction of a Browns team do starting Sunday?

I couldn't stand The Big Show's antiquated offense and thought that Passive Pat was a dolt.
However, I think too many people are overestimating how much changing the offense will mean to the Browns. Did you know:
The Chargers--under Norv--were 30th in offense last year? And that the Browns--under Chud--were 31st in offense in 2008?
It's more about talent. It's more about developing a winning attitude. It's more about talent. It's more about momentum. It's more about talent. It's more about a team meshing. It's more about talent.
It's less about scheme and play calling. Sorry.

Not sure about using the past as a reference but........... Although we all know it was preseason imo there were some things that caught my eye. ***Chud's presence on the sideline seemed calm, cool, and collected. The game and/or his HC position didn't seem "too big for him". Imo it seemed contagious as the team as a whole seemed confident and not showing signs of just learning new systems in both O and D. Although if I was Chud or a player, I'd prolly feel pretty calm, cool and collected if I had Norv and Ray H as my coordinators. Imo you can literally see what Chud, Norv and Ray have brought to the team..........professionalism, confidence, an extremely high passion, and systems the players absolutely love. I forget the preseason game but the confidence the team seems to have really stuck in my mind after 1 certain play. Either Bernie or Jim Donovan was nervously/excitedly saying "They better hurry up.....there not gonna get the play off"!!! The team calmly strolled up to the line and Weeds took the snap with a few secs to spare. That really showed me alot. Wouldn't have gotten that play off in years past. TIMEOUT CLEVELAND! Great to see Weeden in an O that he's a natural in. Great to see (and hear) that TRich is in an O absolutely suited for him and being talked about in sentences with L Tomlinson, Emmitt Smith, etc. Great to not see 5 rookies starting on O this year. Great to finally see some much needed depth in certain areas although we no doubt used up our "mulligans" in a few areas.........RB and OL. Although it's certainly debatable, imo it's good to see the FO not knee-jerk and for the most part work with what they inherited to see who/what they had and..........still have the most cap space avail for the 2014 FA season. And would I like to see Mack and TJ juiced up for another 5 years? You betcha. There's certainly questions on the DB's but we know that pressure can put avg DB's in the Pro Bowl, hence...........we gotta see the pressure "real soon" and "real often". I really wanna see the front 7 do what I think it can do.....put a tremendous amount on pressure on an O. I really think we've only seen just 10%(in the preseason) of what these guys "CAN/WILL DO" when the season is playing out. I just have a hunch. Am I sold on Banner & Lombardi? No. Have they done anything to make me a naysayer? No. Dawson? Ehh, it is what it is/ was what it was. I moved on here. All things considered, at kickoff we'll be the 2nd youngest team in the NFL........by, I think, a day or 6. So, what will be a successfull season? Dunno. However, I do know that "I Just Can't %#4@*5& WAIT For Sunday"!

With this teams past. Why would you use the past as a reference.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I guess I stated my opinion in the season prediction thread which, I believe, is different than an opinion on what to expect based on the past.
In that thread I mentioned some of the changes in coaching staff and a reference to our current talent and established a prediction of 7-9 which would make me happy and 8-8 would have me overwhelmingly ecstatic. But I didn't compare the current situation with the previous one because, as I said earlier, I'm not sure I can do that.
At the end of the season I can compare the difference. For now all I can do is make a wild-ass guess at what our record may be judging by our current circumstances and schedule. And a wild-ass guess is all it is.
Seems like I might have found a new girlfriend and for sure she looks better than the one I had. But in no way can I compare this one to the old one, other than looks, until I get to really know this one as I knew the old one. We'll see.
Ask me mid-season.

I agree there...so with your thought process...youre expecting something similar to last year then.
ddubia...I hear ya. I can agree...that's why im posing the question, cuz I don't know what to expect. I got a feeling like we'll be better because if we have round pegs, we'll find round holes to fit em. if we have square ones we'll fit em in square holes...and so on...not what weve been doing which is put everything in a round hole no matter what

I'm really just a casual die hard without any genuine knowledge or study of the game...
But I am curious what you think about the 2007 team? And do you think the Chargers line and running back injuries had much to do with last season?
To me I see our offense upgraded at every position except tight end compared to 2007. (especially WR 2) Edit: Took out 3, forgot we had Joe J. Granted the tight end is massively important in this offense, so that might be a major issue...I see little reason right now not to expect a 2007 style performance.
If there is one thing I harp about it is that this is a QB driven league. And odds are stacked against Weeden ever becoming elite. I really do hope we can snag one soon, and that people start to understand there is only so much coaches can do without that piece.

I must admit this prediction seems hard because of the unknowns. First, I feel much better w/ the Browns as a whole. New ownership is such a plus based on accountability from Haslem. Lets move down the chain to Banner, Like him or hate him, he's been in this position before. A little more on the personal side than in Philly but he hasn't disappointed me this off season.
Coaching staff- can't say enough how impressed I have been seeing the professionalism on the side lines & schemes. How it translates in first year is yet to be seen. The players- love the fact we are giving everyone a chance, we will know by seasons end the direction of this team. My prediction is we build from here not the other way around.
Do we have holes to fill, absoulutely! Who's not scared of this secondary laying an egg. But, this is what we have this season, I'm excited as always to start the season & see if things will be different. Winning the opener would re-enforce that notion!
If I only knew then what I know today...

really vers? the year of the staph?
the year of BE not only taking him self out by drops but our other receiver out by toe injury?
the year everyone was screaming for the mighty Quinn before game one and our weak minded QB lost all confidence?
sorry vers. I give chud a pass as a OC for that one.

That's what he said all through his post, it's about talent. If you're talent is injured, as it was in '08, then you don't have any and it's all about talent.

Agreed... and I'll also add this: all those attributes come directly from the quality of coaching these players receive. The one exception: talent... and the responsibility of acquiring it falls on the shoulders of the FO.
So... with the young, unproven talent we now have, this coaching staff has the chance to build in those attributes from the start of their tenure. The way they teach, coach, and run practices/classrooms all have an impact.
From all the preseason reports I've heard, these players love what's happening in 76 Groza, and it sounds as if there's pretty much wholesale buy-in to these new guys. Some have even made veiled comparisons that speak much more favorably about these new coaches than the previous bunch.
________
Just sharing some general impressions here:
1. When I saw the 1st preseason game, the difference in execution was almost startling. Plays were coming in quickly, guys were lined up in the right spots, and Weeden sometimes had almost 10 seconds of play clock to work with. I remember thinking: "Dang... this looks like a real NFL team on the field."
2. Chud exudes confidence and competence. That is HUGE, after seeing guys like Shurmer, Crennel and Mangini. It's just only in the pressers, either.... he's also running the sidelines, from what I've seen. With a team this raw and young, they need a presence like that. I've liked what I've seen from Chud so far...he just seems steady, professional and businesslike.
3. The team has looked better-organized on-field at this point than at any time I can remember since '99. It may not necessarily translate to wins, but it put us miles ahead of the chaotic, disorinted, "delay-of-game"- typr Browns we're accustomed to seeing in previous preseasons. That bodes well for starting the season under control... and not looking like a Division II college team trying to compete in the NFL
So... while I have reservations about how many wins we'll see this year, I actually feel pretty good about who's here, and where they can take this team. If we win, it will be a result of all those intangibles on top of scheme and play-calling.
To me, this is just as much about instilling the right culture as it is installing the right personnel package and play. It ALL has to be there, to form a winning franchise.

The difference between you and me, is that you choose to look at the glass as being half (or all) empty, whereas I prefer to looks at it as being half (or all) full.
Pick and parse whatever stats you choose, I think the Browns will be surprising this year, even if that means finishing 500 or a bit above. Yeah, I wish they had filled all the holes, but that did not happen.
But they will be better than the stuff that we have seen before.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

What team (with our history) has ever filled all its holes in one off-season?

Do you mean: season record? Do you mean: "eyeball test" when you make that prediction?

Truth be told, I agree with you. The simple fact that Chud, Norv and Ray are now running our personnel almost guarantees at least 2 wins over what we had last year.
Charger: I think that we'll see some ugly games from all three of our squads, as this team finds its legs. What I hope for, is to see a team that can put enough "2-squad games" to get us near .500 by the middle of the season. After that, all bets are off. Cleve could either "find its groove"- and make a playoff run, OR
It could lose 2-3 heartbreakers on the backside of the schedule, and fold to a 5-11 year. Again.
I just don't know enough about this new arrangement to feel positive about anything, at present.

One thing we agree upon: This team will be much more entertaining to watch... no matter what the season dumps upon us. The cast of coaches alone almost guarantees it.

I don't really buy the notion that even superbowl rosters don't have holes.
Didn't the Pats win plugging in their #4 CB at #2 due to injuries a few years back?
Our team would be a superbowl contender if Weeden was an elite QB. In my mind that is the only hole that ever really needs to be filled in this league.
If someone can prove superbowl winners consistently don't have some scrubs or average players on their starting rosters I'll shut up. But I haven't seen that be the case at all.

Seems like I might have found a new girlfriend and for sure she looks better than the one I had. But in no way can I compare this one to the old one, other than looks, until I get to really know this one as I knew the old one. We'll see.

Remember the song by Jimmy Soul: "If you want to be happy for the rest of life,..." But we are straying off topic here...

Pat Shurmer and his conservative "I refuse to be aggressive" style offense is gone and out the door. So long and good riddance. With that being said we still have virtually the same group of players from last year, will they respond and progress with Shurmer gone? Who knows.
The presason had some very positive signs but can our receivers perform on a high level and get open on a regular basis? I personally highly doubt it and think they're all average at best (Gordon has star potential though).
Can Trent Richardson and Jordan Cameron stay healthy and be effective the whole year? These two guys are going to be the keys and main weapon to our offense and whether we're scoring touchdowns or kicking field goals all season.
Can Brandon Weeden stop patting the ball in the pocket and make quicker and more accurate reads? We'll find out.
Our front seven on defense has potential to be dominant this season and I honestly think they will be, however our secondary is a huge question mark.
I also think our draft was a major waste and will result in nothing but busted picks, but hopefully I'll be wrong on that in the future, but for this year anyway none of our picks are going to make any kind of impact (again just my opinion).
I do think simply based on the coaching upgrades this team will be a lot more aggressive and competitive and that in turn might transition into more wins. I still don't see this team winning more than 6 games this year however, there are just to many "what ifs" and question marks across the board, add that on to an overall lack of quality depth at most positions and we're still another offseason/draft away from being a quality team ready for a playoff push.
I expect us to come out energized and prepared on Sunday but I still predicted a loss just because of all the question marks and "what ifs".

Some good responses/questions to my post and some that are well..........typical. Quote:
I agree there...so with your thought process...youre expecting something similar to last year then.
Great question. Kinda put me against the wall. I love it. Seriously.
I do expect the Browns to be better this year. I predicted 7 wins. I do think that the coaching is better. I do think that having the youngsters have another year of experience is important.
I just don't think scheme and play calling is going to move a team from 5 wins to 11. I think the improvement we see will be more subtle. You are a coach. I was a coach. You gotta know that, bro. It's about talent. It's about motivation. It's about chemistry [especially hoops], it's about getting on a roll--otherwise known as momentum, it's about believing, it's about breaks---both lucky and unlucky. But again, it's mostly about talent---especially in football.
The schematic changes and the play calling will help. I am not disputing that, but there is way more to it.
Then again, I could be dead wrong. LOL...................I hate saying this because I wrote a Persuasive writing piece when I was in 7th grade and said it was "just my opinion," to which my English teacher ridiculed me in front of the entire class by saying "Whose opinion would it be if it weren't yours?" But, the above is just my opinion and I wasn't slamming you.

I'm really just a casual die hard without any genuine knowledge or study of the game...
But I am curious what you think about the 2007 team? And do you think the Chargers line and running back injuries had much to do with last season?
I was going to answer all the posts on one post of my own, but I got carried away on the last one.
Don't sell yourself short. You make a lot of good posts on this board. I loved the 2007 team and I know for a fact that the Chargers OL killed SD's chances last year.
But, that is kinda my point. These guys might be great coaches. Heck man, I love our coaching hires. I think Banner did a great job in assembling a coaching staff. I think our two coordinators are the best tandem in the league. And while Chud hasn't proven squat, I like the hire.
That is not what I am saying. I am saying that even good coaches can field bad teams if the talent isn't where it should be, whether it be from just a simple lack of talent, injuries, terrible chemistry, scheduling, etc.
I was just warning people that we can't automatically assume that we will be so much better just because we are changing our schemes and play calling. Believe it or not, it actually kills me when I see you guys get so hyped before each season and then so disappointed once the games start.

really vers? the year of the staph?
the year of BE not only taking him self out by drops but our other receiver out by toe injury?
the year everyone was screaming for the mighty Quinn before game one and our weak minded QB lost all confidence?
sorry vers. I give chud a pass as a OC for that one.

That's what he said all through his post, it's about talent. If you're talent is injured, as it was in '08, then you don't have any and it's all about talent.
Make sense, now?

The difference between you and me, is that you choose to look at the glass as being half (or all) empty, whereas I prefer to looks at it as being half (or all) full.
Gee, you are such a better person than I am.
With that out of the way...........is that what you really got out of my post?

lol I had an English teacher consistently have us write opinion essays and then tell me that my opinion wasnt what she was looking for...loved that class... Though...I kept saying, if you want your opinion for my essay dont ask for my opinion...and it never quite got through to her...hated it.
As a coach I feel like the human element is all too real of a thing...Its all too real of a way for a team who has struggled to succeed.
The way the Miami went from 1-15 to 11-5 and the way other teams do it, and how teams in the NFC South go worst to first almost yearly. Coaching changes can have profound effects on teams.
If our players believe in the new system and its a sound system, the sky is the limit.
At the same time...The chances are that we could not improve that much, but I got a feeling that we could have a really good year if we can get on a roll.
