Yeah, you wouldn't exactly call Fielder "Mr October", but I think some people (not referring to you) jump to the choke label unfairly with post-season batting stats. The thing is, pitching gets exponentially better in the playoffs. There are no meatballs to get fat on, just the Verlanders, Scherzers, Lesters, Lackeys, etc out there dealing filthy pitch after pitch. Thats why I was surprised to see the Cards tee off on Kershaw last night. I thought that would be a 2-1, 3-2 game, but the Cardinal hitters are pros too. They were patient, and they came through in the clutch.
Incidentally, does anyone else think Clay Kershaw looks like the Geico caveman?

I've written the Tigers off, as Boston just appears to want it more. But you made me think of something. It's probably pretty rare that a team beats either Verlander or Scherzer twice in a row.
unfair to even state as most teams don't get to face them twice in even a season (and both are different pitchers this year --- Max for the better, Justin for the worse).
even still:
NYY, Seattle, KC, Chicago-WS, and Minnesota each beat Detroit twice in a row this season when Verlander started.
Only 2 teams have beaten Detroit twice in a row when Scherzer has started. Chicago White Sox and Boston (their last win & one in September).
That's quite interesting....thanks for dashing what little hope I have left.

Can somebody slip some Prozac into the Tigers water jug? They look like a depressed, beaten team.

I think the Tigers need to trade Fielder for some decent relief if they want to win a championship.....if they can find someone to eat that contract.

I watched so many games during the regular season .... but I haven't watched a single game since the Indians list in the Wild Card. I guess that I am more an Indians fan than a baseball fan. I suspect that if the Indians ever moved out of Cleveland that I might never watch baseball again. I just don't enjoy watching other teams play. I sometimes have a team I root against .... but for the most part I just don't care. I wanted to see the Tigers get knocked out, but now that it's happened .... I really don't care.

Worst possible matchup...seriously it's a competition to see who has the most annoying fans.Yankees Lite vs. Whiny the Poohs/NFC (No Fun Cardinals). I wish the World Series would end in a tie.

Thanks for sharing, moving on...
If one team has to win this World Series, I guess I hope it's Boston. I'm just getting a bit tired of hearing how perfect and wonderous the Cardinals are - best baseball town, best fans, best front office, best organization, best blah blah blah... yeah, they're great - I heard you the first billion times, media.
Go Boston '13...
GO BUCS '14.

Also, while I don't like seeing Leyland lose, or Hunter not get his shot, it brings me great inner joy to see Fielder lose and lose miserably.

I guess I'll half-assed root for the Cardinals. I don't know much about Cardinal fans, but Bosox fans have to have the biggest entitlement mentality of any fanbase, outside of the Bronx, imo.

Why would it be (unless you're referring to the part about someone eating his contract)? A career postseason BA of .194 and zero RBI's this year....batting cleanup? Fielder has become notorious for his lack of performance in the post season. His bat and the bullpen really hurt the Tigers in the playoffs the last 2 years.

I would give you Chris Perez for Fielder, if the Tigers would eat half of Fielder's contract. Deal?
Seriously, if you are struggling while hitting between a couple professional hitters like Cabrera and Martinez, then something's wrong. I wonder if he's considered hiring a personal trainer? He's a little heavy ...

Lol. I wouldn't touch Perez. Fielder's weight doesn't seem to bother him during the regular season. He's just one of those guys that can't hit in the post season. This year was no outlier, he's had quite a few chances.

tough offseason with Dusty and Leyland both shown the door after playoff spots.
I don't think Jim built his bullpen (though he did trust it more than he should have).

EDIT : Leyland just said in his press conference that he was not forced out and that HE made the decision back in early September that this would be his last season in Detroit.

and that it had nothing to do with the horses head delivered in the Little Caesar box that he received this morning.

I hate that the Sox are going to lose Napoli in the lineup during the games in STL. Clearly Ortiz is going to play first in the NL park. There's no way to get them both in the lineup.

Yes. You are likely getting a taste of what we see all year. Their team also cries and whines over everything. Can't stand 'em.

What are the thoughts on that obstruction call? It looks like the umps got it right but there are some Sox fans screaming. I see it as redemption for the "tuck rule" fiasco.

To me it looked like the 3rd baseman threw his legs up in an attempt to trip up the runner. I think that act makes it obstruction. If he was laying flat on the ground after being unable to come up with the throw from the Catcher, then I could see fans having a problem with the call, but I think that he tried to trip up the runner at 3rd. I mean, really, when you go to get up from the ground, do you bend your legs at the knee up towards the sky, or do you push yourself up off the ground? I think that the 3rd baseman tried to trip the runner, and that makes the call more than legitimate to me.

The way the rule was explained, there doesn't even have to be intent. Once the fielder is no longer playing the ball, if he is in the basepath, it's obstruction. Even though it did look like an attempt to trip, that didn't even come into play on the call according to the umps. It sure was an exciting ending to a WS game.

+1
Legs up or not, he's laying in the baseline and the runner tripped over him. Simple. I'm just glad I got to watch it live with my wife. Good ending.
I'm looking forward to tonight. Winner of tonights game wins the series.

well, since the cardinals start with a C, then we can go with that letter for them. it works as another word here too and I'm not talking C is for Cookie.

If the Red Sox can hold on an win one of these next two games, who is the World Series MVP?
I'm sure the inital thought would be David Ortiz. The guy is hitting .733 but can't you make a case for Jon Lester?
2-0, 15 1/3 innings, 1 ER, 0.59 ERA
The dude has been unreal.

You could make a case for either, but Papi gets my vote. How/why are the Cards still pitching to him?

Ortiz is hitting like 2001-04 Bonds right now. Walk him and move on to the next hitter. I hope the Cards win Game 6, I want to see a Game 7 badly. And then Game 7 goes into extra innings. I just want more drama.

Fine, if it helps your heart, the Sox will win it in the 9th inning of Game 7 then. No extras. I'm okay with the Sox winning after seeing how the Bruins lost the SC in 17 glorious seconds last June.
