GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The most important game in the pro career of Brandon Weeden?

That's what I called the Browns game at Green Bay. And after watching the Packers dominate, 31-13, Browns coaches now face a major decision -- at least in the short term.

Do they stick with Weeden, who has gone six quarters with his team scoring only one touchdown? And how do they handle their quarterback after he threw another ill-advised under-handed flipper pass?

OK, this one wasn't picked off as happened last week against Detroit. But it showed the same lack of poise -- and it also displayed a disturbing stubborn streak. Weeden called it a "bone-headed play" after the Detroit game. Both he and the coaches talked about how "nothing good" happens on those desperation plays.

But he did it again.

That's why the coaches need to consider starting Jason Campbell next week at Kansas City.

I asked Weeden about that flip, and he said, "Cuss me all you want, but I'm going to leave everything on the field." On this same field, former Packer Brett Favre often took those type of risks, and made them work.

Rob Chudzinski talked about not "forcing things" and the need to "protect the ball" as a quarterback. When I asked about Weeden's flip, it was obvious that it bothered Chudzinski -- even though it really had no impact on the game.

Chudzinski said he had no intention of changing quarterbacks Sunday. I agreed with that decision, wanting to see how Weeden would react in this hostile environment. But watching Weeden look befuddled and lost on this gloomy afternoon -- and then that flip -- makes you wonder about his state of mind. Why didn't he learn from his lousy decision?

Either way, it's enough to make me say that he doesn't deserve to start next week. It took something drastic like this to make me say that, because I have little faith in Campbell.

Weeden was 17-of-42 for 149 yards, a 48.6 passer rating. He was intercepted once, and had one touchdown.

As I wrote earlier in the week, Weeden seems to be regressing from his rookie season. He opened the game by missing a wide-open Greg Little -- twice -- and had time to throw both times. Talk about high and wide, both passes looked as if they were headed to Duluth.

Since the Browns have returned in 1999, Weeden may be the most frustrating quarterback to wear an orange helmet. He has the physical size (6-3, 220) and the arm strength to be an effective NFL quarterback. But there is so much more to the position than being able to throw a football a long way.

I've been calling for the Browns to use some screen passes to take some of the pressure off. I was told that he lacked the soft touch on those short throws to make them effective.

Well, they tried it twice. One throw ended up at the receiver's feet, another was a high rocket.

The Browns spent all week trying to build Weeden's confidence. His flipper pass/interception against Detroit made him a the NFL joke of the week, given how often it was replayed. It came to symbolize a lack of composure and poor judgment.

Once again, Weeden struggled when under pressure. He went long stretches ignoring tight end Jordan Cameron, who is the team's best receiver -- especially in the red zone. Cameron ended up with seven receptions, but Weeden threw to him only twice (caught both) in the first three periods.

That fourth-quarter touchdown was set up by an 86-yard Travis Benjamin kick-off return. That put the ball on the Green Bay 20, and it took seven plays before Weeden finally delivered the scoring pass.

I didn't want a quarterback change before this game, but Weeden's dismal decision making has forced me to reconsider -- and the Browns should do the same.

I agree. I don't believe Campbell would be much better but I'm sure he wouldn't be worse

Heres to be optimistic and seeing Toad get to gloat about Campbell outplaying this crap that Weeden shows me. Fans were bashing him on the radio big time BEFORE an even more horrible performance. Weeden is not smart and definitely not a leader. He cant bring 110% out of his team mates.

They don't act like they love him right now.

Pulled up the practice squad rosters. Hasn't been updated since Aug 31 but here are the Qb's listed on other teams practice squads (minus Thad Lewis). http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000237146/article/practice-squads-for-all-32-nfl-teams

Atlanta - QB Seth Doege
Cincy - QB Greg McElroy
Dallas - QB Alex Tanney
GB - QB Scott Tolzien
Indy - QB Chandler Harnish
Jax - QB Matt Scott
NO - QB Ryan Griffin
Oak - QB Tyler Wilson
Ten - QB Rusty Smith

I may have missed somebody but these are the practice squad Qb's available. Don't know much about any of these guys. I did like Scott and Wilson as potential middle round picks last draft but if they cannot even make the active roster in Jax and Oak ...

Anybody have any input on any of these guys?

I've been vocal about not switching to Campbell, primarily because it was critical to the future to see if there was any chance the light would come on for Weeds, and that it didn't make any sense as long as the players didn't quit on him.

I have to wonder what the players honestly think about having to drag their asses back out there knowing Flipper is their QB.

Do the coaches have his back? Do the players? I know what I saw, which was a deflated offense and some ugly looks sent the QB's way during the game. I saw the look on Turner's face when Flipper was picked off. He looked up, took a sip of his coffee, and showed no emotion, which is a clear indicator that he wasn't the least bit surprised it happened.

From the standpoint of getting to the point that I think it's time to close the book on our former 1st round QB...from just 17 months ago no less...it makes me sad, but from the standpoint of getting to the point that I think it's time to bring in the relief pitcher to make the players get back to caring...I say bench Flipper and bring in Campbell.

He's become radioactive. Each bad throw...each INT...each delay of game...each otherwise benign quote taken in a negative light...they will all create a huge stir that the players won't be able to recover from.

Flipper is done. Time to send him the way of Couch, Frye, Anderson, Quinn, and McCoy. I honestly think Chud would lose credibility if he stuck with him, regardless of who comes in to play QB.

What's even more pathetic is that we can't even trade the bum now. We'd be selling at the absolute floor. We're better trying to move him in the off-season, as I can't envision a team who would want to bring him in right now given the fact he wouldn't have an even decent grasp of the playbook until there's about a month left in the season.

I just cannot believe he actually made another flip-throw...the week right after the last one.

This was the first game that I walked away from the game WHEN THEY WERE ON OFFENSE!

I wouldn't pay to see a game Weeden is starting unless he is starting due to injury. This team will lose TV ratings if they continue with Weeden. I don't see how Chud can go into next week with his as the starter. Ill say its 99% chance that Campbell starts next week. Then we will see what a completed screen pass looks like in an Orange helmet.

I would start Colt McCoy at this point.

IF you operate on the assumption that this was not a canned shot taken at another moment. Not saying it is/was, but that is a common practice in tv land. Just because it is shown to you with continuity does not mean that it is happening with continuity.

I couldn't bear to watch much of this game. I had it on, but read a book during it. It was pathetic all around, and about what I expected - a sorry excuse for an offense and an overmatched defense.

But, we're Cleveland... we can always return punts/kicks with the best of them. We can always hang our hats on that, I guess.

Sometimes you gotta bench a guy to get the players to perk back up. I'm not in the locker-room and can't say for sure that the players have had enough of Flipper, but it's not at all hard to imagine they've had enough. If they have, then it's time to make a switch.

Campbell can win some games as long as he's not asked to win them by himself.

Its about the message if we make the switch.

This team and FO has already showed its willing to make a move...time to do it again. Good bye Trent...great start. Hoyer up...great continue...if you continue to trot Weeden out there its backing down from the compete or see ya model were setting. I mean...

If we started Gray at QB it would show we're willing to make something happen. I dont care who it is...but the players are done with 3...cant continue to trot him out there.

But he largely would be asked to do just that.

Let's look at this season logically. We lost the 1st 2 games of the season without Gordon, and looked bad doing it. We got a spark from Hoyer, and beat a disappointing Vikings team, and a Bengals team missing 3 members of its secondary. I don't say this as a slam on Hoyer. I like a lot of what I saw from him. I say that more as an indictment of the offense as a whole. We looked at a 2 game stretch with 5 TD and 3 INT .... and almost no run game as a great stretch. That's how far we've fallen.

The thing that Hoyer brought was anticipation and immediacy in the pocket. He made super fast decisions, and got the ball out quickly. That's not something that Campbell has been known for. He's a lot more like Weeden than he is like Hoyer. In many ways, he was Weeden before Weeden was.

On the other hand ....... Weeden really did look like he regressed today. I don't know if he's thinking too much and is confusing himself, or what. From what I could see on the TV, which, granted, is not much, the Packers did not present any really extremely difficult coverages. They seemed to play fairly straight up. There were open guys. There were problems. Gordon fell at least 4 times, either trying to get off the line, or hitting his cuts. People may say "but that's just one player", but for a struggling QB that can blow up a play. We had several drops. Not an excuse, but just things that Weeden really struggled to overcome. Overall we played a fairly clean game on offense. I think that we only had 1 or 2 penalties called on us. We largely stayed out ot bad down/distance situation as a result of penalties. Unfortunately, Weeden still looked confused far too often.

I am fine with starting Campbell if only to see if he can do better, and if not then if maybe Weeden can learn a little sitting on the sidelines. He seems confused, and as if the pressure is really beating him down. He almost seems afraid to make a mistake, so he's not trusting what he sees. He has definitely regressed. I think that we do need to see what the rest of the team really is ..... and make some trade decisions before the deadline.

I was really disappointed with what I saw today. The receivers let Weeden down, and Weden let the whole team down. Something has to change.

Weeden is a loser and a bad NFL quarterback.

It's been on display since day one.

Browns fans pretended because they wanted to feel good. Only the most wide eyed could ever believe in the guy. YTown and Django kept on keepin' on because they wanted to preserve their egos. And YT's main backing was fueled by a dislike of Weeden.

Weeden's been so awful this year that even YT waved the white flag. And he'll go down with the ship to defend his gut reaction. Yet he's been rational the last few weeks.

I'm morbidly curious to hear Django ever trot out a defense.

I could see starting Weeden on the road against the Chiefs and making the switch during the bye. If it were at home I'd be surprised to have Weeden play. I don't think it is good to have a guy who is struggling, and is guaranteed to be booed mercilessly every time he screws up. I'd rather roll with Campbell or Gray and have the home crowd happy, than have Weeden and the entire team getting booed.

Then again I was a strong proponent of having Cribbs as our QB for a number of years so anything I say is generally not worth listening to

Well, I guess that you just acknowledged that there was one before

Weeden was horrible, that wasn't hard to see. In most other games he had spurts and flashes of "what could have been" and that's the upside I saw if he could ever deliver that more consistently or for most of a game, but he didn't even once really flash yesterday. He regressed totally. He looked timid, playing not to lose, resulting in horrible looking plays. I said after the Bills game, that those next 4 games will determine his fate once and for all. He had a good first half vs the Lions and been horrible since then, unable to overcome adversity. So bad that I think he will probably get benched, as he answered that question two games earlier.

When does the draft section open on here? We have to talk QBs, RBs, WRs, CBs, FSs

I really can't stand to watch Weeden take anymore reps. Chud is digging himself a hole and making himself look like a clueless coach that has no idea what to do each time he sticks up for Weeden in the pressers and certainly, each time he starts #3.

I got an entire brain full of examples, evidence and so forth that flags Weeden as a failure, why doesn't Chud have these sme things? Isn't he watching him? Isn't he watching the tape???

Campbell (Career stats)

Games 78
% Comp 60.8
YPA 6.72
TD 76
Int 52
QBR 82.4

Weeden (Career stats)

Games 20
% Comp 52.8
YPA 6.38
TD 19
Int 23
QBR 70.9

Unless Campbell has some undisclosed injury, why is making a change even controversial? One QB is a game-tested vet who has had some success, and would be an adequate placeholder until Hoyer returns. The other is guy with a million dollar arm and not much else. Make the switch. The Weeden experiment should be over.

Weeds is so bad that he might bebenched, another guy start no matter how bad, and there will NO QB controversy in Cleveland, merely relief.

Why isn't Campbell playing? I can see two reasons:

1. His salary cap/financial implications of playing
2. His tension and confrontation with the coaching staff after the BAL game

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

They said something on the radio show about contract escalators if he plays a certain number of games, or snaps. Not sure if this was definite knowledge or just speculation.

I heard some post-game speculation on the radio that it could cost the Browns $2M if Campbell became the starter, but I wonder if the $2M figure isn't really his total salary if all the escalators kicked in. Following is from Pro Football Talk:

Jason Campbell isn’t getting paid like a starter, yet
Posted by Mike Florio on March 30, 2013

When the Browns signed quarterback Jason Campbell, many assumed he’d potentially become the team’s starter in 2013. And he’ll definitely get a chance to win the job, since he’s the first signal-caller signed by the new regime in Cleveland, after previously starting in Washington and Oakland.

For now, though, he’s getting paid like a backup, and not a lot when compared to other backups. A source with knowledge of the contract tells PFT that Campbell’s contract pays out $1.5 million in 2013.

Specifically, he gets a base salary of $1.5 million in 2013, $500,000 of which is fully guaranteed.

That said, if Campbell can win the job, he’ll make more money via incentives. Specifically, he gets $150,000 for 50 percent playing time in 2013, 65 percent results in $350,000, and 80 percent triggers $600,000.

In 2014, Campbell’s base salary is a bit higher, at $2 million. He also gets roster bonus of $250,000 due the third day of the league year.

But there are escalators for 2014 based on playing time in the coming season. Campbell’s 2014 base salary will increase by $500,000 based on 30 percent playing time in 2013. 40 percent playing time in 2013 increases the 2014 salary by another $500,000. Ten more percent in 2013? Another $500,000 in 2014. And if Campbell takes 65 percent or more of the snaps in 2013, his $2 million salary will double.

Still, his backup pay for 2013 is low, and that’s largely because Campbell’s options were limited. Especially in light of the egg he laid when he had a chance during 2012 to sub for Jay Cutler in Chicago, during that Monday night debacle against the 49ers.

Campbell could have stayed in Chicago and backed up Cutler, or he could have gone to Cleveland with a chance to win the starting job. If Campbell pulls it off, he’ll be paid more on the back end.

And if he plays really well in 2013, the Browns likely will tear up the 2014 deal and sign him to something better.

Another week, another "F" for Weeden:

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/10/brandon_weeden_report_card_ano.html#incart_m-rpt-2

Quote:

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Brandon Weeden made all of the dropbacks in the Browns’ 31-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field. Weeden went 17-of-42 for 149 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted once and sacked three times.

Upon DVR review of the CBS telecast, here are some observations:

Weeden played terribly

No DVR review was necessary to come to this conclusion.

Weeden failed to rebound: He flopped for a second straight week after a decent relief performance had helped the Browns defeat Buffalo on Oct. 3. Once the Browns finished off the Bills on that Thursday night, they were 3-2 and oozing confidence. Now, after a home loss to Detroit and the Green Bay debacle, they have resumed being the same old new Browns. Weeden is the main reason.

Weeden continued to lose

He slipped to 0-4 as a starter this season, 5-14 in an NFL career that began in 2012. He owns one "save," against Buffalo.

Through seven games as a rookie, Weeden showed signs of growth. But he regressed in his final eight starts and, despite a switch to coordinator Norv Turner’s vertical-power scheme, has been a mess this season. Based on the eye test, his performance Sunday was the second-worst of his career, trailing only the infamous NFL debut against Philadelphia.

Numbers such as a 10.0 QBR and 48.6 passer rating support the eyes.

It is hard to imagine any active NFL quarterback playing any worse at the moment. Weeden has dropped his compass in the woods.

Weeden’s counterpart made his shortcomings that much more glaring

Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, despite a depleted receiving corps, matter-of-factly went 25-of-36 for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He was sacked once. Dealing with the same moist conditions as Weeden, Rodgers thrived.

Rodgers vs. Weeden, regardless of location, is football’s equivalent of Mike Tyson vs. Marvis Frazier.

Weeden stunk early

The Browns received the opening kickoff and had the ball first-and-10 at the Cleveland 20. Desperately needing to show they belonged against a formidable opponent in its house … they did next to nothing. After Willis McGahee rushed for 1 yard, Weeden threw wildly, intended for Greg Little and ultra-wildly intended for Little. The Browns punted.

The Packers took over at the Cleveland 40 and scored a touchdown in four plays.

Weeden began the second possession 0-of-2 and the Browns punted, but the Packers threw them a lifeline when former Ohio State Buckeye Jake Stoneburner roughed Spencer Lanning. On the next play, Weeden made a good throw on the run for his first completion, a 19-yarder to Little.

However, on third-and-1 from the Green Bay 37, Weeden threw an incompletion that could have been picked if it hadn’t been so high. On fourth-and-1, a bad decision and pass toward Davone Bess – even factoring in that Weeden’s left ankle was being hit -- resulted in an interception by Davon House, whose 11-yard return put the ball on the Green Bay 44.

The Packers needed 11 plays to pull ahead, 14-0.

It was all over but the cheese consumption.

The Browns trailed, 17-3, at halftime. Weeden went 5-of-14 for 48 yards and the interception; Rodgers, 12-of-18 for 111 yards and a TD.

Weeden did not capitalize on decent protection

The Browns’ offensive line, more often than not, gave Weeden enough time to make something happen. Based on a subjective rating of pass-rush pressure, Weeden had 25 throws when it was minimal. Instead of feasting, he went 11-of-23 for 87 yards and one TD. Two incompletions were nullified by penalties.

Weeden threw poorly

Periodically, a quarterback will play better, or throw better, than the stats indicate. Such was not the case with Weeden on Sunday, even as he faced a defense with injury issues of its own. Weeden missed high, higher, low, outside, inside, way inside. He rarely hit a receiver in stride.

On a subjective rating scale of 1 (lousy) to 3 (standard) to 5 (superb), Weeden posted a staggering 14 1s. They easily offset the 4s (four) and 5s (two).

Three 1s jumped off the big screen. All occurred in the fourth quarter.

• On first-and-10 from the Green Bay 26, MarQueis Gray ran a wheel route and flashed open down the left sideline near the goal line. Weeden never gave him a chance, misfiring out of bounds. The possession ended in a turnover on downs and kept the Browns’ deficit at 31-13.

• On second-and-10 from the Green Bay 21, Weeden reprised his role as Laurel or Hardy, panicking under pressure and flipping an underhanded "pass"’ in the direction of Chris Ogbonnaya. Unlike in the previous week against Detroit, this goofy improvisation did not become an interception -- barely.

• Later in that possession, on fourth-and-goal from the 7, Little broke wide-open on a slant from the left. Weeden’s fastball into the end zone was well behind Little and caromed off him. Fittingly, Weeden’s day ended on that pass.

Weeden's body language projects zero confidence

While it is true that a quarterback can’t be expected to smile and puff the chest when A. dazed; B. confused; C. unsettled; D. skittish; E. indecisive; F. inaccurate … the quarterback at least can try to fake it when things are going south. Weeden never does. It is easy to discern when Weeden is reeling, and that can’t be good for teammates who are expected to take cues from him.

Receivers had issues

Weeden deserves most of the blame for the Browns’ offensive offense Sunday, but No. 1 receiver Josh Gordon and the other outside receiver, Greg Little, did not exactly distinguish themselves. Gordon caught two passes for 21 yards; Little, four for 49.

Gordon's performance – arguably the worst in his two seasons -- was especially problematic because of his status. CBS showed replays of Gordon slipping and sliding around Lambeau Field as if it were a skating rink. When he did maintain his footing, replays showed a Packer on his hip.

Gordon, as he has in other games, made his frustration obvious several times. How much was directed at Weeden and how much at officials, only Gordon knows. Gordon can say he’s simply being competitive and wants to win, but other receivers with much more on their resumes handle adversity better than he does.

Weeden overall grade: F.

That may be a bit "severe", BpG, as:

- he stands tall in the pocket a long, long time
- when he does roll out, he holds the ball until the last second before he gets thumped
- he did run straight upfield for 10 yards

That will look good on his resume ...

ISpecifically, he gets a base salary of $1.5 million in 2013, $500,000 of which is fully guaranteed.

That said, if Campbell can win the job, he’ll make more money via incentives. Specifically, he gets $150,000 for 50 percent playing time in 2013, 65 percent results in $350,000, and 80 percent triggers $600,000.

56% of season left... so if Campbell plays every snap he gets an extra $150,00,... ok everybody $10 ea from 15,000 of us... I'm in.

I thought this was a fun read on Weeden. It's just comical at this point.

Another week, another "F" for Weeden:

Weeden overall grade: F.

ha! These guys see exactly what I had said not one post earlier. You can see it in his disposition he has lost all confidence. His team mates have got to be reeling at this point. Especially after seeing Brian Hoyer....

Seemingly so. However, as the old saying goes..."When the going gets tough, the tough get going".

Even The Dolans will pony up at this point.

Until Weeden develops some touch, he won't improve, imo. You can't throw as hard as you can to a guy twenty feet away.
