Eh, I know I'll never be able to retire. I will work till the day I die. And as I say that, I will also say our investments are doing okay right now........my fear is it's "fake" money that won't amount to much in the future. Social security is something I'm paying into but probably will never receive.
Such is life. I'm not looking to be like my parents.........retired and traveling the world. I'm not looking to be like my old teachers - 30 years and "hey O........living off retirement, i.e. someone else's money". I'm not a gov't. employee.......so nothing I have is guaranteed.
That's fine. I resigned myself a number of years ago to the fact that I will work till the day I die. I'm glad I have a job I love.
Edit to say: I don't feel it's up to someone else to pay for me to retire. What I, and my wife, save.......that's our "retirement". We sock away and invest what we can, and truthfully, if we decided to sell everything we have, and live low on the hog, we could probably retire right now. That's just not gonna happen though.
Well you should get a job with a pension plan, so that way you can retire on the money you have contributed to it for 30 years

Seems like even our federal gov't. is realizing working for 30 years and then getting a pension and health care isn't sustainable.
I'm sure these workers will be able to roll over their contributions to private plans, and get their pension and health care, self funded, right?
I know several teachers here that retired last year because the teachers retirement for the state of Ohio was "changing", and if they didn't retire last year, they'd end up losing money in the long run.
Make of it what you will.
I know Arch, I was just giving you grief because of the conversations/debates we have had in the past
But yes, changes are being made to pension plans are being made in order to adjust to changes in a few variables, such as rising cost of health caare, abd longer life expectancy's
KING.
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG

and it's not just that general healthcare costs are rising, but healthcare costs AFTER retirement are skyrocketing... The amount of medication a lot of seniors are on is just ridiculous.

I agree. As a nurse I've made it my personal crusade to reduce pill loads in my clients. It's amazing the amount of unnecessary medications people are still taking long after they no longer are needed. Patients still on medications given early to help slow dementia long after they've completely mentally slipped. 85 year old, bed ridden patients on Calcium and vitamin D used to stave off osteoporosis. Great when your active and 75. Nothing but kidney stones once you're bed bound. Iron for 'unspecified' anemia, then three bowel meds because the iron causes constipation. Behavior medications being used well past the patient's ability to be a behavior problem because of their debility. I could go on and on and on. Often when I step in and remove many of these medications people have a resurgence. I've seen people that were sedate for years 'wake up' once old behavior modification medications were stopped. Patients appetites increase. Etc. To those that look after an aging loved one, look at what medications they're on. Be involved. Ask their doctor if these meds are still needed. Doctors often just continue to write new scripts without looking at the bigger picture. Writing new orders to counteract side effect of old orders that should just be discontinued. Get involved.

my mother-in-law was on a whole bunch of med's for various ailments and kept feeling worse. she cut out 2 unnecessary ones and magically felt much better (she decided to figure it out and one of the med's she was on to reduce headaches was causing total lethargy that was then causing other issues).
great that you are looking to only treat what needs to be treated.

And some outrageous medicine. 60 bucks for an inhaler? Get out of here with those jokes.

I take a narcotic for my back.
I use a generic. There used to be 2 companies that manufactured the generic drug I use. I paid $73/month for my medication.
One of the companies went out of business, leaving only 1 in business. The same medication I have been taking for well over a year is now $155/month. (and it's as high as $400+ at other places, such as Wal-Mart)
The name brand options are $300+/month. Some offer a $50 off card, which can also be used to pay the deductible for those with insurance.
Ridiculous. The remaining drug company knows that they have a customer base that is captive, and many, if not most, have a degree of addiction to their medication. For them to double the cost is almost inhuman.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
