It's not all that big of a story but it is rather embarrassing. I was looking at some comments from fans on the PD article and they offer some other quotes that could go up there... "Waiting 'til next year"- Every Cleveland fan. "The only thing we have to fear, is an FBI raid." - Churchill "Do or Do not; there is no try"- Master Yoda Ah, only in Cleveland would this stuff happen.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I recommend these as replacements..... "Those bottles don't pack much of a wallop." -- Carmen Policy. "LeSean McCoy? No thanks. Gimme that Veikune kid." — Eric Mangini "Falling in love is like catching a football, you never know when it might actually happen." - Greg Little "I think it's important to score more points than the other team." - Pat Shurmur "I put my hand up on your hip, when you flip, I flip, we flip." - Brandon Weeden "My bad." -Ernest Byner

Completely agree with this.
Many quotes are not verbatim. Even some cliche-types that people use everyday.
As for crediting the original person who said it, the article explained that it is not always easy to do. Yeah, some Google searching can go a long way. But more than likely they used a source that was mistaken. I doubt they made them up.
Besides, it's the gist of the quote that's important. Not the exact words, not the exact author.
I wonder in how many other places people are misquoted.
Non issue.
However, some of the quotes people have posted on here are hilarious. My personal favorite, "Are you going to finish that?" -Mike Holgrem.

I think they chose to have the quotes go to famous people who repeated them instead of their originators. Would you rather have Thomas Jefferson or F.L. Emerson?

Ok, that's gotta be a little embarrassing for sure.
But look at the quotes themselves. Had the put up the quotes without an attribution, most would agree, there isn't anything wrong with them at all.

Right. It's the false ethos of the quotes that is the problem. You attribute the quote not to credit the person saying it, but to increase the impact/credibility by saying "successful people agree with this mindset." That's why it's bad.

How is this embarrassing? At all? In my eyes it was done intentionally to drive home their point, which conveniently enough was pointed out in the article.
Do your job, don't worry about getting credit.
Kinda of like someone else getting credit for your quote...
And even at a secondary level, "Don't half ass your job", like people for years giving credit for quotes to folks they don't belong to because research was hard. There are 10 quotes on the wall that is evidence of decades of people "half-assing their job".
This looks like it was entirely intentional, and is actually a pretty creative in-house marketing idea.

Flap, if you believe these screw ups were intentional to prove a point as you suggest, then you give them far more credit than I can.

I think reading some of the silly excuses may actually be funnier than the misquotes themselves!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

The best Browns quote of the last 14 years, and probably could go back even further is Phil Taylor getting caught on the NFL Network audio telling Fred Jackson to get his "B"-ass up. It ticked off Jackson who threw the ball at Taylor and resulted in a flag on Buffalo.

Having said that, I doubt that is what happened..

My favorite quote by a Browns player was by David Bowens a few years ago.
It was after Bowens returned two INT's for TD's against the Saints and he was on ESPN's First Take.
They asked him what his 40 time was, and Bowens responds... "Four....Ever"

These were intentional screw-ups. It obvious it was done by someone brought up with the Common Core Curriculum where being right or wrong isn't important, as long as you can show how you got there.

Holy smokes, dude. Nice work! One thing that I picked up on was that most of the quotes that they said were inaccurate, they couldn't actually nail the correct phrase or person or time it was said. While the author has a point regarding the quote about not half-assing your job being half-assed, there is a laundry list of things you should make of the Browns for before this story. Some of these things have been well-articulated by the quotes in this thread. No Kokinis quotes yet?
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I could be, but I deal with marketing stuff every day, and this just doesn't have that... smell, if you will... to me. Misattributed inspirational quotes, paired with the quote from Banner...
Quote:
The messages up here have a theme similar to this. ... When we talk internally, we talk a lot about, "Let's not worry about who's getting credit, let's get it right, and that's going to bring us where we want to be."
... seem to fit into a tight little theme as an organizational philosophy. What better way to remind your people everyday to work for the greater good, check your facts, the team is bigger then any one person, finish the job, then to have them see quotes pushing for the greater good but incorrectly labeled because people didn't check their facts and finish the job. The devil is in the details.
It doesn't matter if RW Emerson (or Banner) gets credit for something Charles Edward Montague (Lombardi) said (did), the end result - "There is no limit to what a man can do so long as he does not care a straw who gets the credit for it." is undeniably positive (say, like, nailing a franchise qb ).
I don't know for sure if it was intentional, but it's a fresh angle. I like it.
It's not like handing out white flags to your fanbase for a game against a rival whose been kicking your ass for the last decade to wave in the stands.

Don't know how I feel about some of these quotes in general. I'm just wondering who gets inspiration to lift weights from Ralph Waldo Emerson and everyone else they have up there.

I think some people are forgetting this org needed a thorough nuking in almost every area, not just on the field. The marketing dept. was trash, the scouts, the gm, the everybody was a joke. These aren't just for Joe Haden and Josh Gordon, they're for the scout on the west coast, Lombardi, the guys finding ways to make being at the game more enjoyable, etc.
