Interesting. Mike McCarthy definitely knows how to groom QBs.

So...he had a chance to get on a 53 man roster on a team that needs a QB...and he chose to stay behind a still-young Aaron Rogers? Isn't his practice squad eligibility nearing it''s end?
I find that very odd.

I'm just confused why we couldn't sign him. Did he opt to stay or is it a league rule?

From the link..........Btw, nice raise.
Green Bay — The Green Bay Packers like practice squad quarterback Scott Tolzien so much that they were willing to jack up his salary to the second-year veteran minimum in order to keep him from signing with another team.
The Packers increased Tolzien's salary from $6,000 per week to a base salary of $544,999, according to figures listed on the NFL Players Association website. The upgrade appears to have been made late last week.
Because NFL base salaries are paid over a 17-week schedule, Tolzien will receive $32,058 per week for the remaining nine weeks of the season. If the Packers keep him on the practice squad the rest of the season, he will receive $288,529 total.
He has made $48,000 during the first eight weeks of the season.
The team's decision to pay Tolzien what he would be making were he signed to another team's 53-man roster is not unprecedented.
Two years ago, the Packers doubled quarterback Graham Harrell's practice squad salary of $102,000 and paid minimum base salaries to wide receivers Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel and cornerback Brandian Ross late in the season in order to keep them on the practice squad.
In Tolzien's case, another team wanted to sign him and the Packers were in danger of losing him. According to WTMJ-TV, the team was the Cleveland Browns.
The fact the Packers were willing to bump up Tolzien's salary speaks to how much they like him and want him to compete for a roster spot next season. The former University of Wisconsin quarterback has been with the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers, but he seems to have found a home with the Packers.
"There's great people," Tolzien said recently. "It has been an easy transition. It's a great working environment. It's always business first, but guys get in their laughs, too."
Tolzien said he has soaked up as much as possible watching quarterback Aaron Rodgers and has already learned a great deal being in the same meeting room and practice field with him. He said veteran backup Seneca Wallace has taken him under his wing and been a huge resource.
"You'd be an idiot not to be a sponge," he said.
Quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo said recently that Tolzien was making strides in learning the offense and that his work ethic was outstanding. He said Tolzien would benefit greatly from going through coach Mike McCarthy's quarterbacks school in the off-season.
In the meantime, though, he and McAdoo work alone on sharpening his skills. Before the Minnesota game, Tolzien went through every possible drop-back and roll-out maneuver during a Metrodome workout that lasted at least 45 minutes.

Could be. Although surprised here that they haven't signed a 3rd QB after Hoyer went down.
Maybe they want an accurate passer throwing vs our D in practice?
I really think that Weeds is here thru 2013. After that imo he's prolly gone.

Yea, I know. Although he's listed as a TE.........prob should be listed as a WC-er(WildCat-er).
Do I recall seeing him running any route(s) as a TE or? Not sure/can't remember......(just thinking outloud). If not, surprised we haven't seen him much if at all as a TE, although no doubt Barnidge knows the system much better coming from Caro/Chud.

He's played a few plays as an H-Back/TE type in the last couple of games.
I think that he'll settle in as an athletic TE type, ala Cameron. (Maybe not him, of course, but a similar type of player) He's 6'4 and 250, and Cameron is 6'5" 245. He's got solid speed for his size. I think that the team likes him, and sees a future for him.
He played 3 offensive snaps against the Lions, 5 against the Packers, and 4 against the Chiefs. Some of those were trick type plays, but others were standard offensive sets. He also had his 1st catch of the season vs the Chiefs.
He has become a core special teams guy too. I think that he plays on both K and P return and return defense teams. He's played something like 25 snaps overall in the past 3 games.

Tks.
No doubt coming here when he did wasn't the best time as far as getting up to speed on the playbook, etc. He's prolly in more of a learning mode as opposed to anything else with his athletics making up for his, at this time, knowledge and experience.
I'd like to see him line up in the backfield, WC-wise, and throw a ball or 3. I'd imagine it could catch a D or 2 offguard?

We tried against the Packers IIRC but they called a timeout to defend it.

This.
I think the Browns are setting up the wildcat formation to throw the ball eventually with him. So far, it's pretty obvious when he lines up in wildcat he's gonna take the ball and run. I'd like to see him start forward and then back up to throw to a wide open Cameron down the middle.

Yup... we're Cleveland. We have to send out QB's to Summer School because they can't get it done during the school year.

Well, that answers that then lol... Thanks for the link, I was wondering what the deal was as I didn't figure it'd be hard to entice someone off a practice squad and onto an active 53.

Pretty sure he doesn't have a say in the matter.
regarding beating out Wallace...you mean how Hoyer didn't beat out Campbell...and yet started when Weeden injured his thumb. Some parts of the depth chart are meaningless.

Sure he does. If he wanted to come here, he would have signed our offer. Instead, the Packers also made an offer that increased his salary to stay there. He'd rather sit on the Pack's practice squad than come to Cleveland's active roster.

Why not? He sits there with a good salary and doesn't ever get hit. He comes here, odds are eventually he will have to play. 38 grand a week is pretty good pay, plus he extends his learning time.

Exactly. Did someone say his weekly salary went from 6,000 to 32,000? I'd think that would be persuasive.

Did the Packers move him to the 53? Or just give him active-guy $$$?
If he's still on the Packers PS, then he had a say if the Browns offered to sign him. All he had to do was say 'yes'. If he chose to stay on a PS rather than move to a 53 - that's very odd to me. (Except that they threw substantial money at him.)
I get the depth chart thing...but he was on the Packers PS...that's a little different than being the 3rd stringer and leap-frogging the #2 guy.
I assume GB goes with (2) QBs on their 53...but by throwing 53-man-$$$ at the PS QB, they effectively have (3) QB's at their disposal and extended their roster beyond 53 + PS.
Pretty darned smart (sneaky) if you ask me.
That all assumes he opted to stay on their PS.

heres the real reason he stayed
(other than the $32k of course, and the reason even if the Browns offered $32k to match, assuming they could)
i edited the seneca wallace part out since i didnt think that was any reason for anything...

Looks like Tolzien's raise was coming anyway. It is almost like the Packers knew Rodgers was going to break his collarbone. Good luck with Seneca Wallace Packers! (Maybe Tolzien comes in and pulls a Tom Brady on Aaron Rodgers and then we can trade for Rodgers this off-season. Brilliant!)
