Can I be given some credit for saying I wouldn't trade Gordon for Julio Jones now?
Maybe Toad is starting to see things my way or will shortly
I'd consider trading Gordon for an RG3 type deal, but nothing less...I'm even hesitant to consider it.
In the end I can't help but wonder how Gordon will do if we ever get a talented QB. He is compiling these stats with Weeden at the helm. Imagine if Randy Moss had started his career with Brady instead of Culpepper and you get a sense of it.
The truly amazing thing is that he is doing this with no real #2 or #3 wide receiver on the team, and no run game whatsoever to even pretend to attract attention. He has done this, the last 2 games, with Brandon Weeden at QB. I actually think that helps him, because the one thing that Weeden can do well is get the ball down the field However, Gordon's not a one trick pony ..... where he has to run deep routes to be effective ...... instead, he can take a simple 15 yard slant ot crossing pattern the distance ... or he can just go and get a 40 yarder.
As I said earlier, we really don't have a real #2 or #3 receiver. Cameron is a solid 2nd receiving option, but on the outside we have no one who the defense even has to consider double teaming except for Gordon. For him to just decimate double teams the way he does is incredible. He does it so easily too. He just glides, while destroying the manhood of everyone trying to catch him. lol Seriously though, he is incredibly talented.
I admit that I wasn't sure what to do with him earlier this year. His potential banishment scared the hell out of me. It still does, and maybe even more now, because he has become such a hugely productive talent. There is no way I would trade him, but i will continue to worry about him until he makes it through a complete off-season without an incident. The only thing that can stop him is he himself. If he can stay away from the drugs and the bad influences in his life, the sky is the limit for him. I sincerely hope he can, because he has the talent to be one of the best of all time.

If he hasn't he needs to change his motivation toward staying clean.
Going into the season his motivation needed to be "what he stands to gain" if he straightens up. Now that he's proven his on the field talent his new motivation needs to change to "what he stands to lose" if he doesn't.

Solid point(s)... when the team improves, I think he is store for a leap in production. When I say improves, I mean get rid of stone hand Little who can't separate and Bess, denote to #3 or even beyond and bring in a good #2 WR that teams will need to respect. Establish a run game so every time Norv tries playaction, a linebacker and etc may actually bite on it. The right side of the line needs immediate attention. Sometimes, it doesn't matter if we had eight Megatrons and nine Gordons - the rush is in the qb's face almost at the time of the snap.
Lots of holes to fill... however, lots of draft picks to fulfill them holes!
Quote: Trouble is, how many of those draft pics are actually going to significantly contribute next year?
I don't know, but I use people like Armonty Bryant and etc. 7th round pick and we've gotten production outta him with his very limited game play. I see his number more and more on gameday. He's molded himself into the rotation of an already quality defensive front.
Who knows, we're quite use to busts and bad draft day decisions. But least we have an abundance of picks to hope for some gems to be found!
Plus, we don't have Mike Holmgren's influence here anymore, so that alone likely increases our draft day value in our selections. The names of Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson strikes instant disgust...
I hope we trade him in the offseason now that his value is so high. I'm so scared he will get suspended again I'm wetting my pants.
Cleveland fans.. we find every problem we can with legit talent but boy.. we do love potential.. draft picks, new free agents, Indians in the farm system, the back-up to the back-up QB.. those guys are great and all we have to do is wait for them to mature to the point where one of them might hope in their wildest dreams to have back to back 230+ yard receiving weeks.. then we can trade them too..

One of my pet projects with this is understanding drug testing and the statistics at hand. And the policy in general which I think is misunderstood.
The number of players who have been in Gordon's shoes is a bit over 100. The number who have been caught afterwards is like 4-5.
Now ask yourself. Out of 100 guys doing drugs and getting caught. How many do you think manage to quit? Keeping in mind these are the same kind of guys who tend to spend their entire NFL salary within 5 years of retiring. If you believe 95 out of 100 drug users quit I have a bridge to sell you.
They are teaching guys when it is safe to take drugs or teaching them how to mask their urine. It is as simple as that.
Gordon will likely not stop smoking pot. But I can almost guarantee he will not be caught doing it again. Plenty of athletes do drugs, heck a huge percent are on steroids, the ones who get caught are typically rookies who haven't been taught the testing schedule and how to mask their urine.
Quote: But I can almost guarantee he will not be caught doing it again.
Good thing you didn't fully guarantee, King, because then we'd know he'd get caught.
And as long as you're not fully guaranteeing anything which fully guarantees he won't get caught, I can then almost fully guarantee that I may possibly see things your way.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

I can almost fully guarantee this is an acceptable compromise that I endorse
Blackmon getting caught took away some of my gusto.

One thing that makes it really difficult to determine which of the QBs might be suited to going forward with the team is this very fact. We have 2 receiving threats in Gordon and Cameron .... and one stellar blocker in Joe Thomas. (and a solid Center in Mack)
However, what do we have elsewhere. Little and Bess are so incredibly inconsistent that it is astonishing.
I almost have to laugh, because in the past 2 games t has almost been like Weeden said "Screw it, I'm throwing to my best guy until they stop me, or the coaches tell me to stop". Why bother throwing to Little or Bess if they cannot get open, and/or drop passes? How about if they can't get to the right place in their routes. (I heard speculation from a writer who has been absolutely brutal towards Weeden this year that the INT to Little was because Little ran his route incorrectly, and that Weeden actually had the ball where it was supposed to go. Is that definitively the case? Who knows? However, given Little's track record for most of his career, it makes it hard to discount. It's too late for Weeden to turn things around in Cleveland ....he's way too far gone as far as being damaged goods ....... but we sure don't want a franchise guy having receivers running whatever kind of routes they want. The QB has to be able to trust the receiver to be where he is supposed to be, when he is supposed to be there. I'm not sure that any of our QBs have had that consistently this year.
Anyway ..... we'll see massive, wholesale changes on offense this coming off-season. I just hope that we get most of them right.

Perhaps it is because as a Cleveland sports fan, life is never quite as good as when things are nothing more than a hope and every time something starts to become real and the hope starts to become joy, the carpet is yanked out from under us. Every. Single. Time.
Perhaps there's another reason our football team is named the BROWNS?
Quite fitting, no?
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.
They must think, "We're the most stupid people alive, C'mon Browns fans, we'll put a winning product on the field!".
That's great. Someone should make a video substituting audio. The most disappointing part about yesterday's loss is that we didn't improve any in our draft status, yet.
Yeah really Purp, were so conditioned to failure that having a real talent on the team is frightening. There must be something wrong. Get rid of him before it happens.
Plus, and I've maintained this for years as well as have posted on this in the past, Modell conditioned this fan base to long for hope rather than build success.
Every couple of years when things weren't going well he would fire the regime and bring in a new one. With that new regime would come a great, wonderful, illustrious hope.
Of course, in about 2-1/2 years that hope would turn to despair because the regime didn't quickly live up to our unrealistic expectations and so feeling the fan base getting antsy Modell would fire that regime and bring in another.
And then once again that brought great, unrealistic hope that would get fired in a couple of years trading it for another round of hope.
This fan base has been fed hope for so long that it has become it's favorite nourishment.
That's a profound statement right there.
The fan base don't know what success tastes like and is afraid to try it. They live on the hope of draft picks and new regimes. If the team is losing they want a change because they know that with change brings hope. And hope tastes so much better than losing.
Damn you Art Modell.
One would have to think I'm drunk to be so brilliant as to pinpoint the psychological mindset of Cleveland Browns fans.
I feel a burning desire to elaborate on this subject.
We need to find a very delicate balance between patience and intolerance to bad.
We had patience with Crennel and it was good to have patience, but it became apparent after awhile that he wasn't going to get it done...and we had to move on. I think we gave a decent amount of time to Butch Davis too...but since then weve done a bad job.
"It has to start somewhere It has to start somehow What better place than here? What better time than now?"

Hope keeps the money machine running even if the team is mired in a losing culture. It isn't even remotely by accident that this is the diet we've been fed for so long, and it has continued long, long past Modell. It is all we've been fed since 1999, too.

Quote: Some will also possibly think he is lazy or not trying hard enough. The kid is a glider/smooth Its a different style. He never looks like he is running hard - but he is.
I was at the game and saw his 95 yard TD live. As I saw it he appeared to catch it at the 20 and ran 80 yards with two defenders chasing him. What I found amazing in seeing it live, from high up in the DawgPound, was that the defenders chasing him were running faster than Gordon yet they couldn't close the gap.
Which means they weren't running faster than Gordon at all. But their legs were pumping faster making it look like they were, while Gordon's long-stride looked like he was effortlessly gliding yet gaining separation on them.
It was like an obstacle illusion.
*On a side note: Does anyone besides me find it the definition of irony that the worst QB in the NFL throws back to back, 200+ yard games to the same receiver, (which has never happened in the history of Pro Football), and will forever have his name in the record books along side Gordon's for that feat?
People in the distant future, (because Weeden's antics will not be soon forgotten), will look at this and say among themselves, Wow! that must have been one crazy good quarterback! Wonder why we never heard of him before?!

He'll also have 2 picks and a fumble on three consecutive plays in the record book also. Not sure that's ever been done. Not sure where to look to find out either.

I noticed that in the highlights... the defenders appeared to be working a lot harder and Gordon was actually pulling away from them.. he has such a natural glide, it's amazing.

Yea, these kinds of anomalies happen all the time.. at one point the greatest college comeback in history and the greatest NFL comeback in history were owned by the same QB... Frank Reich.
Quote: My gut tells me we could very well trade him at the draft.
This type of kid, a full offseason after some success. One strike away from a year? Sounds like trouble to me.
If I'm Gordon,I'm on the phone with my agent asking to get me out of here. The guy puts up crazy numbers on a horrid offense, for a crap franchise.I will be surprised if he is still here next year.

Better yet, the Browns should pay the kid a load of money and keep him here for the next 5 years. Put in his contract that if he get suspended, he gets no pay and has to repay any roster or signing bonuses
This kid is a talent.. get him the ball and he makes magic happen.
Add a QB, Stir in another strong WR and throw in some RB and boom, we got us an Offense. We should be able to find all of that this upcoming off season.

Maybe the Browns should wait to see how Gordon does next year, 2014, before worrying about his contract. He isn't a free agent until 2016. Let's make sure that he gets back out of stage 2 of the drug program before we give him a massive deal.
As far as the contract conditions you suggest .... why would he agree to those when he could become a free agent and likely get a deal without any such conditions, assuming that he stays clean until 2016? It seems like a deal lopsided in favor of the team if you ask me.

Thus my reason for doing it now. Lock him up. But you are right, I'm sure he won't take a deal like that
