Maybe the Browns should wait to see how Gordon does next year, 2014, before worrying about his contract. He isn't a free agent until 2016. Let's make sure that he gets back out of stage 2 of the drug program before we give him a massive deal.
As far as the contract conditions you suggest .... why would he agree to those when he could become a free agent and likely get a deal without any such conditions, assuming that he stays clean until 2016? It seems like a deal lopsided in favor of the team if you ask me.
Thus my reason for doing it now. Lock him up. But you are right, I'm sure he won't take a deal like that

Some Josh Gordon stats....
2nd in the NFL in receiving yards, despite missing two games.
1st in the NFL in yards per game
1st in yards per catch among receivers with 25+ catches
11th in TD's, again despite missing 2 games
1st in catches over 20 yards
2nd in catches over 40 yards
And he's playing with Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer, and Jason Campbell.

2nd behind Megatron, who has played one more game than Gordon, and who had an absolutely Super-Freakish 329 yard day against Dallas (2nd most (by only 7 yards) in a single game in NFL history) and has 7 games of 100 or more yards to Gordon's 6.... and Megatron is still only 50 yards ahead of Gordon on the season.

Megatron is the best WR in the league today IMO - it's extremely impressive when seeing the Gordon/Calvin number comparisons. Flash Gordon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gordon gets no love in Pro Bowl fan vote December, 4, 2013 DEC 4 5:45 PM ET By Pat McManamon | ESPN.com RECOMMEND1TWEET4COMMENTS1EMAILPRINT Josh Gordon may be setting Cleveland Browns records, but the fans have barely noticed. Early Pro Bowl voting results released Wednesday show Gordon is not even among the Top 10 receivers. Calvin Johnson of Detroit leads, followed by A.J. Green (Cincinnati), Dez Bryant (Dallas), Demaryius Thomas (Denver), Wes Welker (Denver), Brandon Marshall (Chicago), DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia), Jordy Nelson (Green Bay), Andre Johnson (Houston) and Eric Decker (Denver). Gordon is eligible for the Pro Bowl even with his two-game suspension because he was not disciplined for using performance enhancing drugs. The highest ranked Brown by position is at fullback, where Chris Ogbonnaya is second (go figure). Jordan Cameron ranks fourth among tight ends, Joe Thomas third among tackles, T.J. Ward seventh among strong safeties, and Joe Haden is ninth among cornerbacks. Fan balloting counts for one-third of the vote, with votes from coaches and players accounting for the other two-thirds. The NFL also is not dividing Pro Bowlers by conference. Instead, the top players are thrown in a pool with Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice conducting a “fantasy draft” of two teams. web page

gonna be hard to get votes playing for yet another bum browns team.
had we taken care of cincy and pittsburgh, and be competing for the playoffs?
i bet the voting would be a totally different scenario.

Gordon has played 11 games. He has 71 catches now, for 1400 yards and 8 TD.
Wow.
Also, Jordan Cameron now has 72 catches for 825 yards and 7 TD.(if me math is correct)
Man, we have a nice base to build on with a young QB. Even just a decent RB and a solid #2 and #2 receiver will make this a nice set of weapons.

Ah, I see why there was a debate earlier in this thread. It was about if he was the #1 receiver in the league!
As of now, he is #1 in yards.

Plus, he missed the 1st 2 games.
Wow has he been incredible.
I played devil's advocate earlier as to whether or not to trade him, and I was torn either way.
I'm glad that the front office just said no to whatever we were offered, because there is no way it would have been enough.
On that long TD, he looked like he was just loping along ..... like a casual jog ...... and the Pats defenders just kept falling further and further behind. He is so deceptive with his speed. He never looks like he's going all out, but no one can catch him once he gets into the open field. It's almost scary to see, and has to be incredibly frustrating for defenders.

If there is still lingering doubt about Gordon "on" the field, then I don't know what to say. If we had a #2, WOW!
Gordon is a monster.

Gordon's long stride reminds me of Pryor in college. Effortlessly putting defenders behind him without looking like he breaking a sweat.

I was one of those guys. I do think people are misrepresenting what truly happened and perhaps we can pull up the Gordon threads to see who is telling the truth and who is embellishing. I don't recall too many people--perhaps 1 to 3--who said to dump trade Gordon. What some of us said was that it was a tough decision because if the guy tested positive for another drug test he was gone. I don't feel guilty about that comment. I still think it was justified. I do find it pretty funny that people are beating this horse to death while ignoring all the TRich, Weeden, and H, H, and S arguments that we had. It's so terrible to bring up who was right on the latter three, but you wanna rub it in my face on this one? And again, I still think that it was a very real argument at the time. With that said, Josh Gordon is truly proving himself to be a top WR in the entire league. He should make the Pro Bowl provided he finishes the season. He is a freakishly amazing athlete and now he is learning some of the nuances of the position. I am glad the FO did not trade him even though I am still wary that he might screw up and be lost to us forever. Hopefully, his close encounter w/the banishment and the notoriety for his outstanding performance this year will keep him straight. He really is a game changer. Amazing physical attributes. Very good hands. Tough guy---saw him mixing it up w/Talib pretty good today. He is establishing himself as not only a number one receiver, but as one of the top guys in the league at his position. Just stay clean and the world is your oyster, Josh.

I like the way Gordon doesn't want to talk about his game and seems genuinely upset that the team has lost even though he played well.

Well, it wasn't "just" because of the fear of him failing yet another drug test. He was also loafing, not finishing routes, dropping too many footballs and giving up on plays. I didn't want him traded just to dump him but if we got back a really high pick I'd have done it.
He wasn't playing then like he has been playing since.
He may still ultimately fail a drug test or do something stOOpid, but if he did then what he was doing now I wouldn't have been for trading him.
Now if he can just not let the fame and riches go to his head...

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, early on his motivation to stay clean needed to be understanding what he could gain if he does. Now his motivation should change to what he stands to lose if he doesn't.
Seems like simple semantics but the fact is that before there was a prize dangling in front of him with no guarantee that he'd ever get it even if he did stay clean. But now that prize is in his pocket and he owns it. The only one who could take it away is Josh Gordon.
Just like with a child, a promise of a reward for good behavior doesn't always work, but a promise to lose something for screwing up is more often effective.
I think he'll be good from this point on.

Back to a serious note:
Man, I just watched the highlight of his 80 yarder today, and he had the DB within a yard of him when he made the catch ...... and it's almost like he was flying ...... because he went from a yard away to close to 3-4 yards away in what looked like 2 steps .......
He had 2 defenders fairly close to him when he made the catch, and he smoked them both by the time he reached the end zone. Badly. It is just incredible.
He just explodes away from the defenders. Wow. It's even more amazing to watch it again (and again) than it was the 1st time around. He took 2 steps and he was gone. It was like a man racing a young child. Just incredible.
I can't get the video to play smoothly, but it looked like he only took like 14 or 15 steps to cover 70 or so yards. Just incredible. Maybe someone else can play it and tell me if that's right.

He might in a timed situation. I think Gordon has game speed and runs as fast as he needs to...kind of like the rabbit runs a little faster when a dog is on it's tail.

I don't know. Isn't he on random testing? I would assume where he is with the leagues drug policy he is tested fairly frequently.
I am not really sure how that works. How does that work in the off-season? Does he get tested then as well or do they simply wait for him to show up as some mandatory team function?

I think I know why you are saying that. It's because he moves without a lot of fuss. Just glides which makes it appear like loafing. But I ain't buying it.
he's deceptively fast and makes it look so easy. As for finishing routes, he does finish them, sometimes in the endzone

Don't get ahead of yourself. And the drug test part is still a legitimate concern, but the kid is a special talent. I dare say, that if any team wanted to trade for him during the off-season now that the price tag has gone up tremendously, suspension looming or not. It would take three first rounders and a second rounder to get him from me. He's more valuable of a player than RG3 and that's what the price tag for RG3 was. My only caveat would be that two of those firsts rounders would need to be in the same draft.
I was speaking to my brother last night about Gordon. If he can keep his nose clean, he's the best receiver to EVER have played the game. Better than Megatron. Better than Jerry Rice. Better than any of them enshrined in the HOF. That is, if he keeps his nose clean.
