As a gamer who's played and beaten this entire series, I just started with AC Black Flag. Thus far I am liking it. Little different from the usual storyline but change is good sometimes.
What are other people's thoughts about it who are currently playing or have beaten it already?

From the little that I've heard from other people, it sounds like the sailing part is the deciding factor, one way or the other. People either liked it or didn't in AC3, and now it's a huge part of this game (with them being pirates and all).
So far, I really really like it. I think sailing is fun, and battle is challenging. I'm very impressed with how seamless the transitions are between sailing and moving onto land. I've only put in about an hour because I had to finish Batman first, but I've really enjoyed it without really getting into the meat of the story.

I'm still working on 3 as it came free with the bundle I bought after having to replace my ps3 console.
I have to say, AC1 was very bare for a game, but I think people knew the structure had potential.
AC2 was hands down one of the best games I have ever played. The storyline was as good as a solid movie script, and there was a ton of stuff to do in the game.
I never played any of the spinoff games from AC2 though.
I have the next 4 days off I may just into AC3 again.

AC3 was fun. It introduced the sailing component of the game, but didn't play too important of a role. Some people liked it, some people didn't. Purely opinion (there weren't any bugs or obvious shortcomings).
AC4 takes that sailing component, does some small tweaks, and makes it a HUGE part of the game. I think I heard you spend more that 50% of your time on a ship, or something crazy like that. So the people that didn't like the sailing in AC3 are pretty much SOL.

The first one was a bit harsh to complete. It was repetitive and quite boring.
I would continue to play the series. They all were fun and had some good story lines. ACIII was extremely buggy when it first came out. They released a patch that fixed all the bugs and etc after I had beaten it - but it was still very fun.
As mentioned, now the ship battles is more focused in the new game. There is a large map with seemingly lots of stuff to do and etc (the Shark and Whale and etc hunting is fun!). I too was shocked at how the controls for docking and even boarding ships are. I was expecting a glitch or something, but none has came about.
Looking to play more of it this weekend!

It's impossible to beat the "Legendary Ships" - I assume you need every upgrade maxed out to even attempt to beat one of these...

I would love to see them remake that first game. That was the initial draw for me, the time period of the Crusades. But yeah, the meat of the game was just bleh.

Yeah, those are pretty brutal. I'm all the way up in everything, but with no elite upgrades, and I still get killed.
The killer, for me, is that they're just faster and more maneuverable than I am. When they can attack me head on, pass by as I unload on them, and then out-turn me and catch me from behind. Man...
Those elite upgrades must be a huge jump up once you get them.

Yeah I mean seriously. You can't attack them close cause they'll pound you with heavy shot and the other cannons, can't attack them from afar cause their mortars will pound you - there is no winning with them.
Looks like I will be forced to treasure hunt more with the maps as that is how you unlock some upgrades for the ship... seems like a lot of gameplay/stuff todo with this AC game, which is good!

I'm not sure how you're doing on this, but I figured something out the other night.
I still don't have any elite upgrades, but I was battling the one legendary ship with the crazy mortars (I forget the name). That one has been the easiest because it likes to sit back and hit you with its mortars (instead of aggressively attacking in close), which are very easy to avoid (just throttle down and turn away like you're heading towards a cliff). Using this technique, I got quite a few passes at him, and noticed something.
Heavy shot and broadside cannons do NOTHING. I mean, it doesn't even dent the ship's health bar. My mortar was able to do a tiny bit of damage, but I run out of mortar ammo long before I take the ship down. What really seemed to work was getting in behind the ship, and blasting away at it from behind. Whether it was with my chase cannons (chasing the ship) or broadside cannons, hitting that ship in the "butt" brought up those auto targets for my swivel cannons, which really was making a good dent. I wasn't able to take down the ship before dying, because even with this tactic, you really have to keep at it for a long time, and he eventually would get in a shot or two with his broadsides.
Just something I noticed.

Interesting, as I too found that broadside cannons, heavy shot, swivel shot and clean mortar hits barely effected/damaged the two different ships I tried to beat. Getting caught up in the mortar zones depletes my haul armor. One hit from their heavy shot seems to heavily deplete my haul armor.
My Jackdaw is upgraded quite a bit, yet still the weaponry is pretty ineffective against them. Next time i'll focus my strike zone in the rear of one them. It's very challenging! Best I did with full mortar (I have 15 mortars via storage) attacks and etc was bringing one below half health, and that took a little time even.
I think they made the legendary ships the incentive to go and hunt for/acquire all the treasures (to unlock Jackdaw upgrades) to be able to battle/compete with them. I can destroy the other ships with one/two hits of just broadside cannons alone.
I'll try getting behind and focusing on that area, cheers for the tip!

Nice!!! I got the plans for those, but I have to get more stone (or is it metal?) in order to purchase.
I'm finally making good use of the diving bell to gather elite plans. Swimming among the sharks is pretty tough and nerve-wracking.

Yeah, not sure but I can guess it whatever "element" that is furthest to the right (up top) when you're in the Buy Upgrade screen. Whatever resource that is, that is what I have a hard time obtaining.

So you was right. That is the only weakness of the Legendary ships is the back portion. I am maxed up with Golden Mortars, Golden Swivels (which really work), , elite fire barrels and full haul armor - and I was at half life when I defeated the first one. Stay close to it, hold square (if u play PS4) when it fires (it usually will fire beforehand if you maneuver close enough and you won't take damage at all) - when you pass it, drift off some fire barrels and they hurt it and hit the back with heavy shot, when reloading use the mortars and then quickly another heavy shot or a cannon hit. Can only get two hits in max, but when you drift away from the ship - that is when it's mortars destroys you. If you throw enough fire barrels, and keep close causing it to constantly maneuver - they really help. Golden Swivels drains it's health big time when you get a good hit on it. They helped the most IMO. You don't get to board it though, which sucks

Yeah, it's too bad you can't board those ships. That's what I was most looking forward to.
Have you played Adi's DLC? It's not bad. I put in a couple hours and I'm about halfway through. In the main story, I'm trying to collect the highest-level man o' wars and frigates for my fleet and finish upgrading my ship. I'm also doing more of the main story vs just wandering around and collecting.

I've visited all locations and every one's icon on the map is yellow (got all the chest, animus fragments, etc). Ship is fully upgraded (you get a trophy "Destroyer" when you complete all upgrades.) I've beat all the Legendary Ships, it was cool they each had different weak spots and etc. My fleet is fully maxed out and I have mainly man o' wars with 66 and 70 power/damage ratings and then some frigates with 33 damage rating. I'm just finishing up the main story and I got a few more treasure maps to get and then I think I'll get some DLC codes off Ebay or something. I'll check out the Adi's one!

Damn! I'm not sure I would last long enough to collect everything, and I'm a bit of a completionist, myself.

I didn't collect all the chests and animus fragments, just the ones needed to fully complete the locations. The free roaming ones on the maps, I doubt I will bother.

So, I've never played ANY of the AC games, but I just got a free copy of this and Splinter Cell: Blacklist with my new video card (GTX 760OC 4GB).
The question is simply: Is this game worth the download and install?? What is gameplay on the PC like?

Good news is... to play the previous AC and the newest - you don't really need to have played the older ones. Two games, two different characters/storylines. Haven't played it for PC but as for is it worth while? IMO, yes. For sure. Be worth while to play the entire series IMO excluding the very first one.

Just finally got around to beating this game yday and let me just say... the ending was extremely stupid. Much disappointment in how it ended. Give the game about a 6.5 outta 10 rating.

Was also disappointed with the ending. I'd still give it at least an 8/10, it was an amazing game.

I finally got around to installing it. I've played about 10 minutes worth and have gotten through about 30 minutes (or so it feels) of cutscenes and "story". I've, thus far, been able to shoot a couple of ships and swim to shore.
The game was very obviously designed for platformers. The gameplay is that hokey 3rd person follow-behind that you get on platforms. I'm hoping that as I go further into it that it improves.
With the new video card in the system, however, I'm finding myself going back to Far Cry 3 a bit more.

I think all Assassin's creed games have a pretty terrible ending. Did you play ACIII? Maybe AC2 had a good ending but then it got opened again by Brotherhood and Revelations. I expect a crap ending from AC.
I still think it's a super fun game, probably the best next-gen game played.
Go Browns!!

Yeah but most of them have a big fight or some boss fight. This ending was too easy. It's like they got to a certain point and said "welp, we need to get this released so let's wrap it up quickly" ordeal. I've played all the AC series and yeah, usually the endings are a bit lacking...
Was still fun, but the ending is why I warranted it a 6.5

It took me a good 15 minutes after the final kill to realize the game had ended.
