Two stories. First one has video you'll want to see (if you haven't seen it enough times before):

'Mike Tomlin Interferes With Potential Touchdown'
Posted Nov 28, 2013

http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/arti...0a-26a55a610d20

Just when you think you’ve seen it all in the Ravens-Steelers rivalry, a head coach makes a “tackle.”

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin might as well land in the box score.

At least that’s how the Ravens feel.

Tomlin stepped in the way of Jones during what could have been a kickoff return for a touchdown during the third quarter of Thursday night’s game.

Jones burst up the left sideline without being touched. He had no Steelers players in front of him. But there was Tomlin.

Tomlin was on the sideline watching the return unfold on the huge RavensVision boards. He had his back to Jones, but was looking over his inside shoulder.

Just before Jones got to him, Tomlin reached his right foot briefly onto the field, then quickly pulled it back.

Jones veered a bit inside and was then tackled by Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen. It was a return of 73 yards and the Ravens ended up settling for a field goal instead of a potential touchdown.

Tomlin said he did not feel like he interfered with Jones on the play.

“I always watch the returns on the jumbotron, it provides a better perspective for me,” he said. “I lost my placement as he broke free and saw at the last second how close I was to the field of play.”

Tomlin was asked whether he knew he’s supposed to be behind the white stripe on the sideline – and therefore shouldn’t have been close to the field.

“Tell me something I don’t know,” Tomlin said. “I do it quite often, like everybody else in the National Football League. I was wrong, I accept responsibility for it.”

Now here’s Jones’ take on what happened:

“I promise you, I’m looking at [Tomlin] the whole time,” Jones said. “I’m like, ‘Does he know he’s on the field?’ I’m running, I’m looking at him, and as I get close I’m like, ‘Is he going to move?’ I just weaved to get out of the way. It broke my stride a little bit.

“He gave me a little juke, and I tried to juke him. It is what it is. … I don’t blame other people for the actions. I still should have scored. As long as we got the ‘W,’ I’m fine.”

The Ravens were able to laugh off the whole incident after winning, 22-20. But it could have been the difference between a win and loss.

“I was wondering, did they credit him with the tackle on that?” Head Coach John Harbaugh asked reporters in jest. “Hey, that stuff happens. It happens. I really don’t have anything to say about it other than, stuff like that happens.”

Players didn't hesitate to accuse Tomlin of wrong doing.

“He did it on purpose,” wide receiver Torrey Smith said. “He was watching it on the screen. … It was pretty funny to see him smiling about it afterwards.”

“He made the tackle, so to say,” linebacker Terrell Suggs added. “But this is a rivalry game and you do what you’ve got to do to win. It isn’t a foul if the ref doesn’t call it.”

There was no flag from officials on the play for stepping onto the live field. Last week, refs flagged a New York Jets coach for getting in the way of a referee on the sideline. This time, a Steelers coach got in the way of a Ravens player.

Quarterback Joe Flacco got a bit of criticism after last year’s Super Bowl when he was caught on camera imploring teammates to run off the sideline and make a tackle on the game’s final free kick if the 49ers broke free for a potential touchdown.

The Ravens quarterback remembered that on Thursday night.

“That’s exactly what he just did,” Flacco said, inciting laughter among the media. “He was looking at the big screen the whole entire time. He knew where he was, and he knew where Jacoby was. He pulled my move.”

Under the NFL rule book's palpably unfair act, the referee and his crew can award a score if a player or substitute were to "interfere with play by any act which is palpably unfair." The crew can enforce any such distance penalty they consider equitable. The offender may be disqualified.

The video boards at M&T Bank Stadium showed a replay of the return and fans booed and chanted at Tomlin. The Steelers coach looked up at the video boards and smiled.

"They always like to show me on the jumbotron here in Baltimore," he said. "I appreciate that."

Now the question is whether Tomlin will be punished by the league, and if so, what might the punishment be.

According to the NFL rule book, “The Commissioner has sole authority to investigate and to take appropriate disciplinary or corrective measures if any club action, nonparticipant interference, or emergency occurs in an NFL game which he deems so unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of a game.”

“They fine people for doing anything in this league, so I’m sure they will probably,” Smith said.

Second story:

'Is the NFL really considering stripping the Steelers of a draft pick over Mike Tomlin incident?'

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdo...--nfl.html?vp=1

By Frank Schwab 17 hours ago Shutdown Corner

The Mike Tomlin sideline incident on Thursday when he stood too close to the field and forced Ravens returner Jacoby Jones to change his path has received a ton of attention, and it was probably assumed by most people that the league would fine him and that would be that.

But a report on Sunday indicated the league is really, really angry and perhaps ready to overreact.

NFL.com reported that not only does Tomlin face a fine, which ESPN said could be six figures, but the Steelers face a fine as well and might be stripped of a draft pick too.

That's utterly ridiculous.

Most likely, the league leaked this to put fear into any team that is even thinking about getting a little too close to the field on their sideline to disrupt a run, as Tomlin did. There's no way the NFL would strip the Steelers of a draft pick over that play ... right?

Fox's Jay Glazer had reported that the league had warned teams about sideline interference the day before, so that might play into the punishment. Still, to go from not even getting a penalty flag on the play to losing a draft pick seems extreme, to say the least.

But, if the NFL is sending a message by letting it be known the Steelers might lose a draft pick over that play, it will probably work. You can be sure that nobody will be anywhere near the restricted area of the sideline the rest of this season.

Tomlin was, in fact, looking up at the screen. That is until Jacoby got nearer to him. Watch the video of the incident and you see Tomlin looking over to his right, (without moving his head), so he could better time his "move". That is, shortly before he makes his move he is no longer looking at the screen. His answer is BS.

If the league can penalize New England for cheating by spying then they can penalize the Steelers for cheating by the actions of their head coach interfering with a play.

When it was over he was grinning like a sht eating dog.

If I were an NFL coach my advice to my players wouls be simple. "If it's on the field of play and not wearing a striped shirt, it's fair game." No doubt the runner was more concerned with getting to the end zone but if he had collided with Tomlin during that play it would have been to Baltimore's advantage. You can't deny you interfered with a player if he lays you out.

and, in fact, there is a NFL rule that the referee is allowed to award a TD if he believes that the player/coach from the sideline interferred with an apparent TD.

this came up in the SB when Flacco was trying to rally up the troops to just gang-tackle the returner from the sidelines if he broke the kick return (and the ensuing discussion about how stupid that would have been).

That was a total bush league move and went well beyond simple gamesmanship. I'm pretty sure the Jets strength coach got suspended the rest of the year then fired for tripping a gunner out of bounds. A HEAD COACH entering the field and altering a would be game changing play is a big deal. I don't buy his flimsy BS excuse either-- he knew what he was doing. Even in the tiny, remote chance that it was an accident, it's still inexcusable. But seriously, watch the replay.

I say forfeiture of a late round pick, 1 game suspension for Tomlin, and an involuntary contribution to one of the league's charities is a reasonable and fair punishment.

When you game/cheat the system to gain a competitive advantage, part of the punishment has to affect competitiveness as well. See: Pats losing 1st round pick for spygate, Saints losing 2 second rounders? and their head coach for a year in the bounty case, Redskins and Cowboys losing cap space for uncapped year shenanigans

I haven't seen this mentioned yet..but considering the penalty the Steelers are looking at I will.

Didn't the Jets do this very clearly a few years back? Some special teams coach or something actually flat out tripped a guy if I remember correctly.

Correct. The strength coach. Sal something if I remember correctly.

The jets fired him. The jets got a $100,000 fine, and Sal got a $25,000 fine.

There's new video out that makes Tomlin look even worse. It was taken from the field level, in the corner of the end zone on the side where Baltimore received the kickoff, on the same sideline as the incident. He clearly steps out to the field as Jacoby Jones got to the sideline. At least 20 yards before he passed him.

I wish Jones would have put his head down and went into him, and taught that idiot a lesson.

The guy is a moron. Seriously, I can't believe he won a Super Bowl. The guy has road the coattails of Big Ben and Dick LeBeau for YEARS.

If he gets fired, I'm going to be so pissed. If anything, the punishment should be that the Steelers CAN'T fire him.

LOL, look at the media backing up the cheating Steelers once again.

It's not bad enough that there was no call on the play (or the myriad of other plays they don't get called), but now they're saying a draft pick loss would be too harsh?

I think Tomlin should be suspended 2-4 games without pay, fined $50,000, the Steelers should be fined $100,000 and the ref that didn't throw a flag should be suspended as well pending an investigation into his background.

But then again, I'm mostly just fed up with terrible refs and/or favoritism (not sure which it is). It's getting to the point where I can't even enjoy watching a game since at least 30% of them are decided by the refs.

And of course the only thing you can't challenge is penalties? why? It's all so fishy. Suspend Tomlin and dock them a 2nd or 3rd round pick. He clearly cheated. It's on video. Something MUST be done or they will continue to cheat as they have for years as the expense of player's careers (Massaquoi, now Campbell and I'm sure many others that I"m unaware of because they're not Browns).

Speaking of player safety, think about this... what if Jones DIDN'T see Tomlin because he was focusing on evading Steelers players....

He trips on Tomlin's foot, flies face first into the ground or twists around tearing an ACL.

As if cheating wasn't bad enough, Tomlin also could've seriously injured a player.
How anyone can defend that man I don't know.

That would be awesome and hilarious lol

I don't think they can dock them since we own the rights to that pick, so they'd either lose the following year's 3rd or another pick. Knowing how much the NFL caters to the Steelers it'll probably just be a 7th rounder or something.

I doubt this will happen. He'll face a fine, and probably a small one, at that. At his press conference addressing the fine, he'll give the same smirk he gave on the field.

Meaningless penalty if so...that ploy stopped a TD in a Divisional game that may have had an impact on the playoffs...I'd trade a late round pick to improve my chances there

A fine, gam(s) suspended, and a pick. Without the last one (perhaps even including it), the spying, hit squads, and Tomlinizing just become "the cost of doing business." Hope they show this situation the same restraint the the NFL showed the Aints.

I'm a big believer in if you are going to penalize someone, you put enough hurt on them where it deters them from trying it again.

So, for me, they lose their first rounder and the coach gets a 2 game suspension and a loss of pay during that time.

But hey, that's just me

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin Fined $100,000 for Interfering with Play Versus Baltimore
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach MIKE TOMLIN has been fined $100,000 for interfering with a play in progress during last Thursday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. In addition, because the conduct affected a play on the field, a modification or forfeiture of draft choices will be considered after the final order of the 2014 draft has been determined.
The discipline was issued by NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations RAY ANDERSON.
With 6:26 remaining in the third quarter, Baltimore’s JACOBY JONES returned a kickoff 73 yards to the Pittsburgh 27. During the return, Tomlin – in violation of Rule 13, Section 1, Article 4 of the NFL Rule Book – was in the restricted white border that surrounds the playing field and stepped foot onto the playing field during the play.
Tomlin’s positioning in the white border during play should have resulted in a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The part that is interesting to me is watching both the nfl network and ESPN....more than 5 different people....Billick, Mooch, Charlie Cas, Martz etc believe that it was an accident. He didn't intentionally do it.

When they show the replay you can clearly see he is trying to look over his shoulder without turning his head. His eyes are all the way towards the play. I think he did it on purpose, but tried to make it look like a mistake.

Furthermore I think had the runner not been forced to cut back into the field he doesnt get caught and scores.

I also think a lot of the analysts are trying to play it down as an accident because any time someone is caught cheating it makes the whole NFL look bad, and there has been no shortage of that.

so, we have the Steelers 3rd round pick (I think that's correct) if they downgrade that pick, we're the ones that get hurt. Would they do that? and if they do, can we go back and get something else, like another pick, cash, player? something? Anything? from the Steelers?

What if they take that pick away from the Steelers all together, are we out totally?

Think about the slippery slope that creates going forward for draft day trades?

What if the Redskins had done something that the NFL felt warranted having their first rounder taken away, what would the Rams get in return for the RGIII Trade?

Just wondering

Once a pick has been traded, it no longer belongs to the team trading the pick away. Such trades have to be recorded with the Commissioner's office anyway, so they would know who owns what. There is no way that the Commissioner's office wold penalize a team by taking away a pick they traded to another team. That would be absolutely senseless, and even they aren't that stupid.

100k is not enough. Termination of draft picks HAS TO OCCUR. I realize a mistake and legit accident or "whoopsy" - but that was too blatant of a "accident" to even have had happen. If it is just a 100k fine, then I shame the NFL committee in charge of deciding punishments.

Tomlin’s positioning in the white border during play should have resulted in a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

so, we have the Steelers 3rd round pick (I think that's correct) if they downgrade that pick, we're the ones that get hurt.

Thus my Slippery Slope comment. Can a worms.. Thanks for clearing that up. Makes perfect sense to me..

$100k fine and no suspension is kind of a joke of a punishment. Suggesting a forfeiture of a pick but announcing it now just seems like the NFL just wants people to forget about it and then do nothing. Or dock them a 7th rounder or something. It would be easy enough to do something like, if you make the playoffs, you lose a 5th. If you miss you lose a 6th. I think they did something similar with the Pats (1st or 2nd rounder+, depending on where they finished.)

Quite frankly, and this is difficult to say as a Browns fan, but I think the most fair outcome is for the Steelers to lose the pick to the Ravens. Probably not going to be a popular opinion here but they are the ones that very nearly got screwed out of an important game because of it. If that is Goodell's thinking, maybe it makes sense to see where the final draft order falls for both teams.
