Re-sign Ward and Mack

FA targets:

QB Cutler
RB Tate
RB Jennings
RB J.Bell
G Slauson
G Rinehart

Draft:

1a) WR Evans - TAMU
1b) QB Bortles (even if we sign Cutler) - Central Florida
2) FS/CB L.Joyner - FSU
3a) ILB Skov - Stanford
3b) RB C.Sims- WVU
4a) OT Mewhort - Ohio St.
4b) QB Murray - Georgia or QB Fales - SJSU
5) WR Hoffman - BYU or OLB Gayle - VTech

Evans + Bortles is becoming my "dream scenario". I think Evans will be a Top 5 player, probably top 3 when all is said and done. Not sure we'll even have a shot. If we can land Cutler, I would try and even invest some of the other picks to make sure and land him, he's THAT good. If we miss out, Watkins+Bortles would do too, but Evans would give us more protection in case Gordon blows up. Watkins I see more of a pure no2 impact WR, not a go-to no1 WR, think Mike Wallace. Evans is a much smarter version of Gordon and Gordon is on-field smart for his age.

Glad to see I'm not the only fan of Sims from WVU. He's a Jack of All Trades RB.

Given the subject of this post, its probably good for reference toshow who OUR FAs are this year.

WR Josh Cooper
OT Oniel Cousins
K Billy Cundiff
G Shawn Lauvao
C Alex Mack
CB Chris Owens
LB Craig Robertson
OT Jarrod Shaw
S TJ Ward
RB Fozzy Whittaker

I left out the various scrubs we've signed in recent weeks.

On that list,

The Must Keeps
TJ Ward
Alex Mack

Letting either of these guys walk is a HUGE risk. If I can only have one or the other, I keep Ward. Center is an easier position to fill and seeing some of the scrubs that can get jobs at safety (remember Ray Ventrone....god, Earl Little???), we don't want that gaping hole in our secondary again. Given the cap room we have though, we should be able to accommodate good salaries for both of these guys. We're likely looking at anything from 3 to 5 million a year for each contract and we should be ok with that.

The If we can, Keep 'Em
Shawn Lauvao
Craig Robertson
Fozzy Wittaker
Billy Cundiff

I've had a huge hate on for Lauvao since we drafted him but he has improved over the years and isn;t the worst thing going anymore. We can;t fix everything in one year so if we can keep him at a mid-level salary great. Robertson has limited upside but will be an ideal depth guy if we can develop a new starter.Until then, he's respectable at ILB but we can't overvalue him. Cundiff we sign just to stay consistent if possible and Whittaker has a little spark that I kinda like. He's got quicks and you can teach that. He should be able to be had on the cheap.

The Only if its a bargain
Chris Owens
Jarrod Shaw

Owens isn't a great corner...he might not even be a GOOD corner. But he's a body with decent experience and can hold up as a consistent dime guy and occasional nickel. Shaw is a big body who we've had on the roster or PS for a couple of years. There must be some potential there right?

The Buy a Bus Ticket
Oniel Cousins
Josh Cooper

Oniel Cousins couldn;t play tackle in Pop Warner and Coop-a-loop gets shipped out of town along with Weeden. I liked him but he's nothing special and he's at the bottom of our WR corps.

How would I fix the team?

Trade O'neill Cousins for Andrew Luck, straight up. Indy would give us additional picks if Cousins hits playing time escalators (hey, it worked once!)

Attempt to trade Weeden, but end up cutting him.

Draft Tom Brady 2.0 in the 6th round (face it, we're due).

Cut off Calvin Johnson's hands, and put them onto Davonne Bess. Problem solved.

... and on the 7th day, I would rest.

If you can do all that why not just make a copy of Tom Brady's brain and transplant it into Brandon Weeden's body? Imagine what Brady's brain could do with that arm.

Can we trade our 2014 draft picks for cash? Then use the cash to help build a dome on the stadium.

Just saying...That may bring a SB here.

Please explain to me how Cutler will change and become a guy with the intelligence, character, composure, guts, and durability to lead the Browns to the Super Bowl? Are we expecting him to have a complete personality transformation by coming to Cleveland?

The choice of Evans as our first pick is an interesting one. I thought I was the only guy who felt he might really make an impact. Wish I had gotten the pimping in first. He fits into our receiving corps perfectly (if Little would develop into the slot guy he could be).

Evans could be a star.

I have no idea how Cutler would become a new guy in Cleveland. I'm not a Cutler fan. I think that he's OK, and could be available, but I wouldn't want to invest heavily in him at all.

I look at Mallett, and he probably wants to go try to find a starting gig somewhere. He is unlikely to re-sign with the Pats once he becomes a free agent, and they are not going to franchise their backup QB.

Either they keep him and then allow him t move on next year, or they trade him next year.

You only get one year to evaluate the kid, and then you either have to try to re-sign him to, presumably, a huge deal .. or let him walk. You might even have to franchise him. That's a lot of evaluation for one year, nd if you're wrong, it's a huge expense.

I would rather get a guy like that going into his 3rd season, so you have 2 seasons to determine what you have.

That is why new England will trade him- if he's not the heir apparent because Brady still some time, then they will lose him to FA next year. I think they trade him this year. Is he better value then our other options at QB, especially if he can be had for a third??? A fourth year NFL QB should be easier to evaluate then a college QB- I think we would know in short order if he is worth extending a contract.

How'd u fix the team? Change the uniforms; add a logo.

( )
In that context is uniform correct? The players are plural, but the team is singular.

from what I have read the FO is split on Mallet. don't think they would give a draft pick for him.

Determine the weak links on the team.

Turnovers - Result of bad quarterback play.
Running game - Team is always playing behind the down and distance.
Short Yardage/ Goaline - Needs more push in the interior offensive line.
Explosive plays - Outside of Gordon there is very few explosive plays. Team is usually an grind.
3rd Down/ Nickle Defense - Struggles covering running backs, tight ends, and possession receivers.
Red Zone Defense - Gives up too many touchdowns in the red zone.

With those issues in need of a fix the team needs QB, RB, OG, WR, ILB,CB, FS.

Re-sign TJ Ward, Alex Mack, Craig Roberson and Shaun Lauvao. Sign Joe Haden and Phil Taylor to extensions while cap room is available.

In Free Agency sign Ben Tate to be featured back. Find secondary help with bargin type free agents for a nickle back and free safety.

Draft -
1A - Sammy Watkins WR Clemson - Explosive wide receiver with very good run after catch ability. Also, insurance if Gordon screws up off the field.
1B - Gabe Jackson OG Miss State - Mauler offensive guard to provide push up the middle.
2. Ryan Shazier ILB Ohio State - Smaler faster style inside lineback that is in fashion to cover tight ends or running backs.
3A - Carlos Hyde RB Ohio State - Short yardage/Goaline back that will eventually be featured back.
3B and 5th Round pick to New England for Ryan Mallet QB - Have got to give Lombardi credit for being right about Brian Hoyer. Why not go after the player that Bill Belichick felt won the back up QB honors over Hoyer. Mallet and Hoyer can battle for starting position.
4A - AJ McCarron QB Alabama - Lombardi like smart QB's and with Hoyer and Mallet McCarron will be able to develop for a few years.
4B - JC Copeland FB LSU - 270 lb full back that big strong and athletic to plow the way for the running backs.
6 - Kenarious Gates OT Georgia - Back up offensive lineman.
7 - Jeremy Gallon WR Michigan - Smaller wide receiver that has good hands and some explosive ability.

One of the most interesting battles for next season will be for Right Tackle between Mitchell Schwartz who had a good rookie season but regressed in year 2 vs Chris Faulk. He is a very strong run blocker who had a late 1st early 2nd round grade at this time last year but fell out of the draft when he was injued in LSU's bowl games. Currently on Browns injured reserve.

QB - Hoyer/ Mallet/ McCarron
RB - Tate / Hyde/ Lewis
FB - Copeland
TE - Cameron / Barnedge / Grey
WR1 - Gordon / Benjamin
WR2 - Watkins / Bess / Little
LT - Thomas
LG - Greco / Pinkston
C - Mack
RG - Jackson / Lauvao / Gilkey
RT - Faulk / Schwartz / Gates

DE - Bryant / Rubin / Winn / Hughes / Bryant
NT - Taylor / Kitchens
OLB - Kruger / Sheard / Mingo / Groves / ?
ILB - Jackson / Shazier / Roberson / ?
CB - Haden / Skrine / McFadden / ? / ?
SS - Ward / ?
FS - Gipson / ?

LS - Yount
P - Lanning
K - Bogotay

My try at www.first-pick.com

Round 1 Pick 9 (BUF): Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA (A)
Round 1 Pick 25: Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson (A)
Round 2 Pick 7: Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor (A)
Round 2 Pick 8 (OAK): Lamarcus Joyner, FS, Florida State (A)
Round 2 Pick 9 (BUF): Derrek Carr, QB, Fresno State (A)
Round 3 Pick 7: David Yankey, OG, Stanford (A)
Round 3 Pick 10: Louchiez Purifoy, CB, Florida (A)
Round 4 Pick 7: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington (A)
Round 4 Pick 25: Yamin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut (A)
Round 5 Pick 7: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson (A)
Round 6 Pick 7: Ahmad Dixon, SS, Baylord (A)
Round 7 Pick 7: Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin (A)

A totally unrealistic draft .... but I'd take this as a good start to fix the team!

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I would be stunned if we spend a lot of money on a free agent RB. It is so easy for teams to find them in trades, in inexpensive free agency, and through the draft, that I just don't see us signing someone like Tate to a huge deal. (As he seems likely to command) I do expect that we will look at lewis as a major mart of our rushing attack again, and probably look to the draft for a second back. I suspect that speed will be the top factor in looking for a back. I think that we'll probably go looking for a back more like a LeSean McCoy than a Jerome Bettis type.

I do think that we will look at 1 or 2 of 4 different positions in the 1st round ....... QB, WR, CB, or LB. I am not saying that we will 100% go there, but if we take a QB with out 1st pick, then any of the other spots could be open for the team. I think that those are the high value spots for this front office.

I would not be shocked to see us grab a RB as early as the 2nd round.

We could be a very active team, moving up or down in the draft. It will be interesting to see how we address team needs.

I do think that the front office will address most of our most dire needs in free agency, where possible. OL, 2nd TE, backup WR, 3rd/4th CB, and so on will probably be addressed before the draft ever rolls around. I would bet that we go LB shopping as well, looking for a young veteran who can play ILB in this defense, even if he might currently be stuck in a 4-3 as a bad fit.

As far as names at this point ..... well, I have no clue. I do think that the front office will be aggressive right off the bat with a couple of clear targets, and then will play the game with the guys they are only semi hot after. A veteran G would not be a surprise. Neither would a backup TE. (though they could also target one in the draft with the extra 3rd/4th rounders) As mentioned, a young veteran LB stuck in the wrong defense could be a target. Maybe they look for a veteran WR to help the youngsters develop, It would not surprise me to see them make a trade or 2 as well.

It will be interesting.

I keep seeing a common theme....don't overpay.

The fact is we have to start spending money to meet the CBA averages, so unless you simply want the team paying fines without benefit of better players, we have to start paying.

Also, we have had buckets of money for several seasons now and for several seasons we have sucked. I say we scrap that formula. Find the guys we think can help and throw a boatload of money at them to get them here. I like the idea of Cutler and Tate. Pay them and get them in here. Screw being millions upon millions under the cap. Why??

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

This upcoming draft is what is going to cover and fill most the holes on this team, including the biggest which is QB. I don't see free agency helping too much, I just view all the stocked picks we've traded and wheeled-n-dealed for and etc - this draft is extremely important and will make the biggest impact.

Now, all they (Lombardi/Banner/etc) have to do is pick good talent and we're fixed! Easy as that!

They haven't picked half decent talent yet. Whether you want to name someone I've forgotten go ahead. But as for these, they aren't decent talent.
Davonne Bess, Fozzie Whitacre, Dion Lewis, Any of their draft picks after the one in the top 10. None of the no name wideouts they brought in. Also considering the decision to keep some of the young db's and tight ends as opposed to sticking it out with Watson or Sheldon Brown.
So I'm not looking for anything decent to join the Browns while Banner and Lombardi are following this plan.

Fix the team? Well, that's easy peasy. Just find a Franchise QB, re-sign good players already on this roster and continue to add pieces in the early rounds of the draft. Done!

But herein lies the problem with this in 2014 (at least w/ the QB acquisition part)....we may not be in a position to take a franchise QB. I think many would agree, at least at this point in the season and prior to the combine and over analyzation of those college players entering the draft, the only comfortable QB pick is Bridgewater with several other QB with tons of question marks. Unless we lose out and other teams in front of us fall, we may not have a shot at a QB we really want THIS YEAR....but more on that later.

If it was up to me based on free agency priorities, I would approach TJ Ward first about a contract extension, then Alex Mack. If I had to choose, I would go with Ward but if the money is right, I would love to have both back. If Mack signs with another team, I try to re-sign Lava knowing that the Browns, perhaps knowing they need to address the interior of the line may not be able to do it in one year and Lava fills the RG spot for now.

I would consider offering extensions to players eligible for FA in 2015 like Joe Haden, Jordan Cameron, Jabaal Sheard....although Sheard may need to wait based on how the Mingo situation unfolds over the next year. If Mingo becomes the player the FO thinks he can become, Sheard may not be re-signed. I would seriously consider offering a couple of these players major extensions around the 2014 free agency period because, and this is my opinion, I don't want this FO to be as active in FA as they were last year. Signing one major player and depth to contracts...Ok, I'm fine with. But I'd prefer not to hand out the same guaranteed money to like they did last offseason. But that's me. If we are gonna hand out guaranteed money, I think it is better spent on players like Mack, Ward, Haden, etc. than overspending for a player on the market. And with hopefully being somewhat dormant in the FA market, signing these 2015 FA in addition to the 2014 ones may placate fans desire to spend in FA (as it does EVERY year) after another losing season. The signing activity, no matter where it comes from externally or internally, is activity regardless.

Back to the draft and the QB thing.....

This may sound weird, but I think I've come to the realization that I'd be ok if the team didn't draft a QB in the first round..or in the second even if the player isn't there. I don't want the FO to force the issue if the player is not there. I realize this is probably NOT gonna happen but perhaps the QB draft isn't this year but in 2015 instead. Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley (if he stays at UCLA) may be a better fit for us. Again, maybe someone does jump out over the next few months but I am fine with the FO selling the fans on the local kid, Hoyer, at least for one year and addressing other positions with players like Sammy Watkins, Evans, CJ Mosley, Cyrus Richardson, etc.

OR (And I'm not sold on this yet but just thinking as I write)... we trade down with our first pick to pick up one in 2015 to play the "Trade Up For a QB Game" we may have intended to do this year. Maybe the draft makeup for QBs will be better for us then....who knows?

This is what I am thinking at this point, but I reserve the right to change my mind at any time.

14. The Browns count quarterback "harrassments," a stat that combines sacks, quarterback hits and quarterback hurries. By far, Desmond Bryant (32) has the most. Next is Paul Kruger (16), Jabaal Sheard (12), Barkevious Mingo (10) and Phil Taylor (10).

Yeah, Buffalo is married to EJ Manuel for at least another 2 years...

Pittsburgh traditionally sticks with BPA. They obviously value certain positions above others, but I think they would love to get younger on the DL. Especially with the Browns and Bengals deep on their line. I'd think they would want to keep up with that.

Obviously they've had guys play that position and last forever, so I think that's one of the positions they value high, and worthy of a first round, especially with this year probably being a higher pick than usual.

Round 7 Pick 7: Marquis Flowers, OLB, Arizona (A-)

Who do you envision Buff and Pitt moving up for? No way Buff looks at QB.

I don't remember who they moved up for. They were both defensive players.

immediate moves to fix this team is to lose out the rest of the season...

I've never EVER encouraged the Browns to tank cuz I want to win no matter what... but lets be real.. we need a QB, and we need a GREAT QB.. more we fall down the draft order, the worse we are..

So who are we going to draft by falling down?

Yes....I am saying I don't want the team to fall down and play dead. Maybe my wording could have been better.

Ok got it. So what do you think of a game like Sunday? We didn't roll over and play dead, we proved we can play with and beat a 10-3 playoff team, but we lost any way.. In those situations, I'm always rooting for us to win in the final minutes but then as soon as the game is over, I'm sort of relieved that we didn't...

I agree. A good QB is a must. I hope at our top QB there is a QB we love and we take him.

In my situation the mock I was a part of already had Bridgewater, Bortles, Manziel and Carr off the board at 7 (where the browns picked). So trading back made sense in that situation. No need to reach at 7 for a QB who will be there later

I agree, our pick at 7 or 6 or 5 or where ever it ends up being has got to be a playmaker.. If it's at QB then that is the best option but I'd rather have a stud second corner, a stud second WR, a stud ball hawking FS, hell I'd rather have a stud OG at 7 than a reach at QB...

Music to my ears right there. I hate the idea of going into next season with just Hoyer and Campbell, but if you can't get the guy in the next draft that you think is the answer, skip it, grab a lower round QB that you can groom maybe. Get the rest of the pieces you need such as RB, WR, Safety, CB, OG...

And if you can get what you want without using the Indy 1st rounder, package it for a 1st and second in the next draft in 2015. Go into the 2015 draft with two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks.

It's actually a little scary to say to pass on a QB in the draft because we need a guy so badly. But the wrong one doesn't really do you any good. We know that all too well.

Daman I'm a big proponent of moving some picks from this year into next year if we don't think we can get the QB we want so we are just as stocked next year if we still need to go after a QB..

And I would say that not only does reaching for the wrong QB not help, it hurts. One you have wasted a draft pick you could have used on something else (which is true of every bad pick but especially true of a high draft pick that you reached for) and two, it usually takes a couple years before people are willing to admit the mistake and admit you need to try again...

Daman and DC,

While you're not wrong, I think you're trivializing what it takes to land a franchise QB.

There aren't any Andrew Lucks in this draft, and probably won't be for another ~10 years. Just saying to decide on a guy and pick him and be done with it ignores the fact that those guys just don't pan out all that often. These failed draft picks happen to every and all GM. The simple fact is the QB search is as much about trial and error as it is about evaluation.

What that means to me for this year? Don't spend more than 1 1st for anyone other than Bridgewater. If you move up to get him, you're doubling down on one guy (which I'd rather not do with this draft class). I don't want to move up to take Sam Bradford 2.0

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I understand what you are saying, but...Noooo. We should (!) improve by 3-5 W's next season which (obviously) will make it that much more difficult to get the "guy" we want. Besides, if the QB class next year is of no better quality than this year's, what is the point? If, and I say IF, we believe to the best of our expertise, that there is a guy we should be able to get, then get him. We cannot keep waiting...do what is necessary to resolve our QB problem.

Putting this here because I'm not sure where better it might fit:

On a lark, I decided to look at QB stats for the year so far. What I found was kinda surprising.
If you take the combined stats of Weeden, Campbell, and Hoyer we have passed for 3,670 yards, 23 TD's and 15 INT's.

That is good for 8th best in yards, tied for 8th best in TD's, and somewhere toward the bottom on INT's (I can't get the filter I'm looking for without all of the erroneous passer data). That INT number, while bad, is less than Flacco, Palmer, Dalton, Eli, and Geno. Comparable to Stafford, Ryan, Tannehill, RG3, and Cam.

Basically, it shows that we have a rather explosive offense that simply turns the ball over too much (9 of those INT's are on Weeden alone). Even though we can't run, we still produce - and in a big way. We just need to learn how to take better care of the ball.

Unfortunately, even though our QB's combined for the 8th best total of TD's, we still have only the 27th ranked scoring offense.... that's a problem, and that is absolutely directly attributable to the lack of run game as evidenced by the fact that we have TWO - count them TWO - Rushing TD's all season long. Likewise, 20 of 32 teams have at least 10 rush TD's so far.

Of the ten teams that do not have at least 10 rushing TD's so far, only New Orleans is in the Top 10 scoring offenses, and San Diego is the only other team to join the Top 16... and both of them have 7 TD's. Most every team with fewer than 10 Rushing TD's at this point has a losing record.

Browns is the Browns

There are TOO many QB's to not get one in the 1st or 2nd round this year.. I'll be pretty pissed if we don't pick one up...

Dont want us to reach like Holmgren did with Weeden (turrible turrible pick), but there is talent there for sure.

I'm still liking Tajh Boyd even though he isn't touted as one of the best. Really reminds me of Donovan McNabb on the field.

That's interesting. Gotta think about that for awhile.

Typical nice looking Norv Turner stats inflated by overuse of pass plays.

We also rank among the worst in pure efficiency per pass play with 6.6yds/PA. There you have it.
