as he is a popular player who will be a free agent at a position of need, I thought this SI article on him deserved it's own thread. some good, some bad in here. he definitely has a good fire about his play (which obviously may not always go over so well). overall I like him, but I also think he'll end up costing more than we'll be willing to pay a RB. Even last year when Arian Foster was healthy I was saying Tate was the better back. He was the Montario Hardesty to our Trent Richardson last season. A better back, but due to money (in Richardsons case draft status) he was the backup. Foster was signed to a big contract and Tate wasn't, so the better player in my opinion, sat. The numbers this year won't suggest that because Houston is horrible.
I'd love to sign Tate and I think we will have a go at him. It's a very good, proven back at a desperate position of need. I'm on board.

personal opinion... i don't think he's all that. I think there are better undrafted FA or Late round RB's we can pick up cheap.

I don't know what price he'll bring but I've loved watching him in Houston... very hard worker... seems to get the hard yards... isn't the shiftiest and doesn't seem to break big ones in the passing game like Foster will, but he's a hardnosed downhill running back.

Dion Lewis will be back (and I'm looking forward to that).
But we still need a workhorse RB. McGahee, bless his heart, just isn't it (and it's not for lack of effort). If we could put Ogby and Fozzy together into one guy, that would be great. But we can't.
I would feel a little bit better about signing a proven guy vs looking to the later rounds of the draft (which is where we'll find our guy). Same as my opinion of Cutler, I think the market will dictate a higher price than I would be comfortable paying if I were the FO, but we should actively pursue him.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Let's see, Tre Mason is playing far too well to still be a sleeper. If we say 6 and down are sleeper rounds, I'd put the best prospects being Antonio Andrews, Storm Johnson,
George Atkins III, and D'Anthony Thomas. But I wouldn't say they're anywhere close to Ben Tate's level of skill.
There's an interesting thing I've been thinking of that this could possibly be a Shanny type of deal where the Texans might just have a great run blocking scheme rather than have two really great runningbacks, because how often does that happen?
Looking at Dennis Johnson, the backup to Foster his stats are:
Colts, Cards, Raiders, Jags, Pats, Jags
8/36 4/7 2/2 13/74 13/3 10/3
attempts/yards
I think we should pay attention to his stats as the season goes on to see if he can have the same success of Foster, their fortune might be due to run blocking rather than good running backs.
