I know I said (a couple of months ago) that I will not post again on site because of the abuse that Islam was recieving from various people on this board. I had no intention of posting again. However, I wanted to post an article that was in today's Arab News (leading newspaper in Saudi Arabia) about a topic that many people constantly criticize about: 'the wrong notion that Muslims don't condemn terrorist ideologies'. I hope the article below will alleviate the misconceptions about Islam. Again, I had no intention of going back on my word. I don't intend to post again. Again, to my friends on this message board - my best wishes to you and your families. http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1§ion=0&article=94784&d=10&m=4&y=2007Media Urged to Join Anti-Terror Fight P.K. Abdul Ghafour, Arab News JEDDAH, 10 April 2007 — The Council of Ministers yesterday urged the media and cultural agencies to play a greater role in the Kingdom’s ongoing campaign to root out terrorism and terrorist ideology. The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, also set up two panels in Jeddah and Dammam to settle conflicts and deal with violations involving insurance companies.
“The media and cultural agencies must do more in confronting the phenomenon of terrorism, by rooting out terrorist ideology and addressing social and international factors that promote terrorism,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted the Cabinet as saying. The council made the comment while praising Saudi security forces for killing Waleed ibn Mutlaq Al-Radadi, who was on a list of the 36 most-wanted terrorists.
The Cabinet commended the Kingdom’s security forces for containing terrorism and efficient handling of terrorists. It reiterated the government’s call to militants to surrender themselves to security authorities and change their ways. “Efforts have been made to provide counseling to those who were detained (for their involvement in terrorist operations),” the Cabinet statement said, adding that decisions would be taken concerning them on the basis of Shariah law.
The Cabinet also underscored the cohesion and unity displayed by Saudi society in confronting terrorism and trying to eradicate the phenomenon from the country.
In a recent statement, Interior Minister Prince Naif said terrorists were receiving support from within and outside Saudi Arabia. “These people are receiving support, especially from abroad in addition to support from inside, in terms of finance and religious rulings,” SPA quoted him as saying.
Prince Naif revealed that Shariah courts had tried some militants who had been involved in terrorist activities inside the Kingdom during the past three years. “We assign experienced full-time judges to try militants and give them the punishment they deserve.” He stressed the need for drying up the militants’ financial sources.
The Cabinet meeting licensed Jubail Water & Electricity Company and passed the final accounts of Electricity Regulating Authority for four years from 1422H to 1425H.
Speaking about other decisions taken by the Cabinet, Culture and Information Minister Iyad Madani said the foreign minister has been authorized to sign protocols for changing the general agreement with Romania for cooperation in economic, commercial, investment, scientific, technical, cultural, youth welfare and sports fields.
It also assigned the higher education minister to hold talks with his Portuguese counterpart on reaching a memorandum of understanding for scientific and educational cooperation. The Cabinet approved an agreement with Malaysia for avoiding double taxation and preventing tax evasion and a similar accord with Greece on the avoidance of double taxation on revenue earnings from operating international flights.
The panel for settling insurance-related conflicts in Jeddah will include Muhammad Al-Othman (chairman), Abdullatif Basheikh and Abdul Hadi Al-Ghamdi (members). The Dammam panel comprises Abdullah Al-Harbi (chairman) and Ahmed Al-Ghamdi and Alawi Al-Hashim (members). The Cabinet appointed Hassan Al-Attas, director general of technical administration at Saudi Fund for Development; Saad Abu Milha, director general of the Civil Service Ministry’s office in the Asir region; and Abdul Aziz Al-Abdul Jabbar, director general of Roads & Transport in the Riyadh region.

I'll second that hope of reconsideration IDP. Don't let a few deprive the rest of us of your perspective because alot of us appreciate that perpective. We may not agree or understand completely but I for one welcome it.

I gotta agree with them completely.
The media has the power to influence public opinion greatly (and they know it). There is no reason that they cannot use that power to help explore and expose the ideologies and methodologies used in terrorism... .and that goes for both the West & the Middle East world.
As for Islam, anyone who grossly attributes Islam as being bad or evil is an idiot, IMO. It is People that make things seem a certain way and the unfortunate effect that we have in America is that the only time you hear about Islam is when it is associated with terrorism. This goes back to the above dealing with the media and their powers to influence public perceptions.
And too, I don't doubt that there are a number of factions on both sides of the coin that prosper from the division. That there are people that want the other side to be perceived as evil (again, this applies to both sides).
Nothing is inherently bad or evil.... except the individual people that use them.

Interesting article, but I don't see where they say what the media should do to aid them in the anti-terrorism fight, or did I just mis-read it?
It says "The media and cultural agencies must do more in confronting the phenomenon of terrorism, by rooting out terrorist ideology and addressing social and international factors that promote terrorism,”, but doesn't say WHAT they can do.
One thing I think they can do, is quit playing the terrorist videos they send in when they have hostages. A good portion of the terrorist agenda is notoriety, and spreading fear. Showing those homemade videos when they get sent in just helps the terrorism cause.
Wish you would return to the board and post more IDP.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Now wait a minute... the government is actually calling on the media to voluntarily change it's methods of reporting in an effort to help stop an evil activity like fundamental religious terrorism? OMG, if our government made a statement like that the internet would shut down from bloggers typing "Free speech violation" and "First Amendment attack"...

It would also be a blatent violation of "seperation of church and state" ... since you have both "government" and "religion" in the same sentence.
