I honestly don't know if it's a reach or not!
I don't think so, but hey, you have your opinion, I have mine.

well when you have 12-18 window for growing a beard and someone narrows it down to a very small timeframe, I think it's more of a reach than saying it could have been done at any point in time over a very long period. Quote:

"Duck Dynasty" Before A&E
Absolutely delightful. I've probably read about 10 percent of this thread, but what I find exquisitely entertaining about it is how arch vociferously defends this Robertson guy because of the sincerity with which he holds his beliefs, and yet the show is a cynical, cleverly orchestrated façade. If someone offered to pay me that much money to grow a beard and pretend to be a redneck, I'd do it too!

The fact that you use words like facade and vociferously would do little to help become a redneck . You would get a furrowed brow and then a sideways head lean followed by a "huh " ?

J/C. I like the show too. I find it entertaining, like a modern day Dukes of Hazzard. I watch solely for entertainment. I don't try to watch it as a political show/statement. Sometimes I laugh at them, and sometimes I laugh with them. Sometimes i find it stupid. To me it's the same as if I watch I Love Lucy or the Big Bang Theory. It's TV; therefore, I call it escapism.

This article from March 2013 states that Willie and Jase both have had a beard for the last 8 years so that would make it close to 9 years now and that Phil hasn't shaved since 1988.

-jc- As for the sons faking being a redneck, pretty sure Phil calls them and thier wives "yuppies" so even Phil thinks they are fake. The show pretty much makes fun of Willie as a fake outdoorsman type guy. The guys want to go camping, everyone is "roughing" it Willie shows up in an RV. (Yes I know the show is scripted.)

If you're already worth 15 mil. what's the point in "faking" anything?
I understand the shows are pretty much scripted, but it has already been proven they had the beards years before the show was even brought up, much less appeared.
Actually I do think it's possible that it may have helped market their outdoorsman business, but that's pretty smart actually.
Actually the funniest part in all of this to me, is it seems some who feel so enlightened find it rational to make fun of someone from a different culture than themselves.
Something they rail against in some situations yet seem to bask over in other situations.

jc. I've watched several episodes, I find it entertaining. The stuff they do reminds me a lot of the random, senseless stuff my buddies and I did when we were in our 20's, and somewhat still do on the few occasions we all get together. Especially the beaver dam destruction episode.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

It doesn't matter when they grew the beards or how much money they had before launching the television show. As I said in my original post, I appreciate the irony in defending a man's personal sincerity while he participates in the most insincere activity imaginable.

Let me start by saying...before I ask my question..... I haven't really read the thread other than skimming the last dozen or so comments.
However, anyone that watches or has seen the show should know it's staged. It couldn't be more obvious. However, that is the definition of reality TV - non-actors doing scripted documentary style TV. I don't think even TV tries to deny that anymore. Its just a form of entertainment wrapped in a different package than what you would get with real actors.
So I have to ask...are you saying that type of TV is the "most insincere activity imaginable"?
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Okay, I suppose if the audience watches "reality" television believing it's fake, then the insincerity of portraying a "real" person on such a show is decreased. But why would you assume the audience views the show in such a way? Personally, I cannot watch any "reality" television precisely because the fakery is nauseating. Can you watch that stuff knowing what you know? Additionally, I bet there are more people watching the show who think it's completely genuine. I could be wrong about that, though, given that I stopped paying attention to pop-culture television a long time ago.
As for nlr's assertion that politics is the most insincere activity imaginable, I think it's at least debatable. But I know how much people around here hate topic-switching in a single thread, so I'll defer to Mr. Brooks on that one.

Don't know. Apparently those clean cut looks DID sell duck calls,
Do you worry about what Robert Kraft is wearing when you buy ketchup? No.. the clean cut look didn't sell anything because nobody cared what they looked like, only that they made good duck calls.. the look is all about the TV show... and I'll explain how the TV show is all about the duck calls in a minute...
Quote:
To all of you that think the pictures "prove" anything: I'd like to see pictures of YOU from the 90's. Bet it would be interesting.
I'm still not clear on what these pictures "prove". If they prove anything, I would say it's that the duck call business did them pretty well, and they parlayed that into even more.
Well for me you'd see somebody who was trying to wear what was sort of in style in the 90s and now you'd see somebody wearing what is sort of in style today.. in reality it hasn't changed much, jeans, khaki short, t-shirts, golf shirts... collars change, colors change.. look hasn't changed much.. less hair.
For one person in a family to drastically change his look from preppy to backwoods hillbilly is one thing.. for an entire family to do it from grandparents down to grandkids, all at the same time... that's obviously orchestrated.. What the pictures go a long way to proving is that this whole camo, backwoods, zz top beard looking group was fabricated for a TV show...
Quote:
Odd. Anyone seen the family speaking in churches?
Actually I have.
Quote:
I don't watch the show because of the beards. I don't watch the show and think "fake". I don't watch the show with envy.
I watch the show because I enjoy the show. If that lowers me in all of your opinions, lower me away. And I'll say "all of you that watch wwf, ucf, hockey, baseball, oprah, msnbc, golf, any "reality" show, etc.......you're all jackwads. And, according to your standards, I'd be right.
If you enjoy the show, enjoy it. Just know that this is not some long heritage of backwoods family... it's fabricated for a TV show.. the duck calls may be real, the business may be real, the people are real, their faith may be real... but the image of the people is not real. It's like the hot blonde who is really pretty intelligent who makes a small fortune by pretending to be a total airhead on TV.. it's just acting.. if you enjoy it, that's all that matters for you.
Quote:
The family's money was not made by the show. The money was made by the duck and deer calls.
Good for them... not sure why this matters.... however, one stat I read said that they sold 60,000 duck calls last year and expect to sell 750,000 this year... so while they may "only" be making $200K per episode, it's like a free half hour entertaining infomercial every week that millions of people watch.... I'm also curious, how much do you think they made off the $400 million in Duck Dynasty tshirts and trinkets last year? Yes, they were obviously very successful before, but this show has put them in a whole other financial stratospher... 690,000 additional Duck calls, largely as a result of this show, at an average price of $60/duck call.. well that's over $41 million .... they would probably do the TV show for free if it came right down to it... I would.
So don't think I'm bashing.. I hope they make more and more and more money, good for them... and I'm not bashing you for watching it, if you find it entertaining, wonderful.... Hey I like the show NCIS L.A.... but in the end, I know that LL Cool J is just pretending to be a government agent and that he wasn't one 15 years ago...

DC,
I find it hard to believe they grew their beards just for the TV show. According to the article i posted Willie and Jase stopped shaving 9 years ago and Phil hasn't shaved since 1988 yet the show didn't start until 2012. If you read the article i posted Willie states the only reason him and Jase shaved before 9 years ago was because they thought they had to for business dealings. I don't see anywhere that they all started growing beards at the same time other then Willie and Jase, and Phil already had one.

That's the part some simply haven't seen or are ignoring. The beards were grown close to a decade before the show even began.
I do agree with several other of their points though. Most of what we see is staged. I believe that their faith and family beliefs are real, but what part of those things that are shown is edited and cut so we only see what's scripted for us to see.

I was unaware of that.. that's for pointing that out. Maybe it's the 90s yuppy look that was "out of character" trying to fit into the world of big business that was the real change...

They've done 4 seasons and it's only been on for a little over a year? Wow.
To put this in perspective they're only 20 episodes away from having more episodes than Jersey Shore.

Were you aware they had a show prior to 'Duck Dynasty? It aired on Outdoor channel I believe. Benelli Presents Duck Commander. I think it started in 2009.

I became aware of that recently. I was not aware of it when it was on... I'm also now aware that they did a Christmas album.

Well, I suppose we could discuss a different TV show such as the 60 Minutes episode from last night that covered the A-Rod investigation...
Wow.. drawing blood in a mens room stall in a Miami nightclub?? That's just disgusting.
Edit** Never mind I started a post on Tailgate..

Anthony Bourdain for the win. Reality TV that's actually real, or, at least his opinion of what's real.

I am an avid duck hunter. I was aware of the Robertsons before the show. They make quality hunting products and they had advertisements featuring the family with beards (if it matters) before the show was out.
I cant believe people are arguing about TV being real. Of course its staged, of course its fake.

I find it hilarious that the argument is now whether they are business yuppies who are acting like rednecks, or if they are really rednecks who acted like business yuppies for a while.
All the while most of the commenters apparently never read what Mr. Robertson actually said, and are reacting to fake, false, inaccurate representations of what they think he said.
He never mentioned gay marriage. He expressed no hatred or ill will of any kind, towards anyone. That doesn't mean you can't disagree with it.
The GLAAD spokesman characterizing what he said as "vile and hateful" was propaganda that would make Josef Goebbels proud. I know there are a few members of that community here, and I call on them to fully and completely repudiate what that man said. Or not, and accept evil, hateful lies as being OK as long as they "support" your position.
Your community spokesperson owes Mr. Robertson a sincere apology.

I think everyone said their piece about it and moved on so the conversation gravitated towards a different direction. Had it not the thread would have been dead.
